Switching out of a gilt fund usually counts as selling it for UK tax purposes. If you exchange units for another fund, the old units are normally disposed of at their market value, so a capital gain or loss can arise even when no cash reaches your bank account. A transfer into an ISA does not erase that disposal: a Bed and ISA first sells the investment outside the ISA, then subscribes the cash and buys it back inside the wrapper.
You can often reduce avoidable tax and administration by identifying exactly what you own, reconstructing the correct pooled cost, using available allowances deliberately and choosing the timing and destination of the replacement investment. The steps below apply to UK-resident investors in ordinary taxable accounts; residence, fund domicile, reporting status and the tax year can change the result.

What a “switch” means for tax
Platforms use switch to describe exchanging one fund for another. Tax law normally treats that exchange as two linked transactions: a disposal of the old units and an acquisition of the new units. The disposal proceeds are generally the market value of the units you gave up, not simply any cash shown on the account.
HM Revenue & Customs states in HS284 Shares and Capital Gains Tax (2025): “A switch from units in one sub-fund to units in another will normally be a disposal of the old units, on which capital gain or loss will arise.” That rule applies even where the funds are operated by the same provider and the platform processes the change as one instruction.

When a gain is created
A gain is broadly the disposal value less allowable acquisition costs and other allowable selling costs. A loss is calculated in the same way when the result is negative. The amount that is taxable depends on the capital-gains rules and your circumstances for the relevant tax year, including any available annual exempt amount and losses.
The purchase of the replacement fund starts a separate tax history. Its cost is normally the amount paid, plus eligible dealing costs. Do not combine the old fund’s cost with the new fund’s cost merely because the switch was executed on the same day.
Why a paper gain still matters
You may owe tax on a gain without withdrawing money. The taxable event is the disposal, not whether you move the proceeds to your bank account. A platform statement showing “switch” or “reinvestment” therefore does not by itself make the transaction tax-free.
Gilt funds are not the same as direct government gilts
Direct UK government gilts are generally exempt from capital gains tax on disposal. Units in a gilt fund are normally treated as investments in a collective vehicle, so selling or switching those units may be chargeable. The exemption for a gilt held directly does not automatically pass through to a fund that owns gilts.
Identify the legal wrapper before calculating anything
Start with the exact security and account type shown on your contract note or platform statement:
- Direct UK gilt: a government security registered in your name or through a nominee. The direct-gilt CGT exemption may apply, subject to the instrument and your circumstances.
- UK-authorised fund: a unit trust, OEIC or similar authorised collective. Disposal of units is normally within the capital-gains rules.
- Offshore reporting fund: a non-UK fund with reporting-fund status. Disposal gains and annual reportable income can interact, so retain the fund’s tax information.
- Another collective vehicle: an exchange-traded or listed fund, investment trust or other product may have different legal and reporting characteristics. Confirm the treatment rather than assuming it is a gilt or a UK-authorised fund.
The fund name alone may not reveal its status. Check the prospectus, platform security details, fund tax documentation and, where necessary, the provider’s tax-support team or a regulated adviser.

Accumulation units: include taxable retained income in the cost
An accumulation unit does not pay income into your bank account. Instead, the fund retains the distribution and reflects it in the unit price. For tax purposes, that retained amount can still be treated as income.

If the accumulation income is taxable, add the amount reported for the relevant period to your acquisition expenditure when calculating the later capital gain. This prevents the same income from inflating the capital gain a second time. The amount must come from the fund’s tax voucher or accumulation-fund certificate; do not substitute the change in unit price or an estimate of the distribution.
Records to keep
- The date and number of units bought, switched or sold.
- The price and total consideration for each transaction.
- Contract notes showing dealing charges, stamp taxes where applicable and settlement dates.
- Cash distributions and tax vouchers.
- Accumulation-fund certificates showing taxable or reportable income.
- Any corporate-action or fund-merger notices that changed the units you held.
- Evidence of losses already claimed or carried forward.
Keep the documents for the period required by HMRC, because a platform’s current transaction screen may not preserve older history after an account transfer.
Calculate the disposal correctly
Most funds held outside a tax wrapper are subject to HMRC share-pooling and identification rules. The calculation is more involved than subtracting the first purchase price from today’s value.
Use the pooled holding as the starting point
Units of the same class in the same fund are generally aggregated into a single pool. The pool has a total allowable cost and a total number of units. The average cost per unit is not itself the final tax answer, but it is a useful check:

For a disposal, allocate the appropriate proportion of the pool’s cost to the units sold. Add qualifying dealing costs and taxable accumulation income to the pool when the rules require it. Deduct allowable disposal costs from the proceeds.
Apply the special identification rules
HMRC’s ordering rules can match disposed units with acquisitions made on the same day and, in specified circumstances, acquisitions made within the following 30 days. Those matches can override a simple average-cost calculation. Review every purchase around the disposal date before finalising the gain, especially if you made regular contributions or reinvestments.
A platform’s tax report may provide a useful starting point, but it may not know about holdings on another platform, transfers, earlier losses or the correct treatment of accumulation income. Reconcile the report with your own records.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose you hold 10,000 accumulation units. Your documented pooled cost is £12,000. Taxable accumulation income of £300 has been reported and must be added, making allowable cost £12,300. You switch all units when their market value is £14,000 and pay £20 of disposal costs. The illustrative gain is £14,000 − £20 − £12,300 = £1,680, before considering any same-day or 30-day matching, losses or annual exempt amount. The figures are examples, not a tax calculation for your account.
Three ways to change your position
| Route | What happens to the old holding | Immediate tax point | Future position | Other considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sell and buy another taxable fund | Old units are sold; replacement units are purchased in the taxable account. | Gain or loss on the disposal is calculated in the normal way. | Future gains and taxable distributions remain outside a wrapper. | Compare dealing charges, bid-offer spread, time out of market, duration, credit exposure and liquidity. |
| Bed and ISA | Provider sells the outside-ISA holding, subscribes the cash to an ISA and buys investments inside it. | The sale used to fund the ISA is a CGT disposal. It is not sheltered retrospectively by the ISA. | ISA income and gains are generally not declared on a tax return. | Subject to ISA subscription rules, available allowance, dealing costs and the provider’s process; prices can move while the two legs settle. |
| Retain and redirect new contributions | No sale of existing units. | No disposal gain from the retained holding at that point. | New money can be directed to an ISA, pension or a different taxable fund, according to eligibility and objectives. | Leaves the original fund’s risk and future tax exposure in place; does not correct an unsuitable holding by itself. |
How a Bed and ISA works
A Bed and ISA is a sale-and-repurchase process, not an in-kind transfer. HMRC’s ISA guidance says: “Investments held by an investor outside an ISA can be sold, and the proceeds subscribed to an ISA.” The outside-ISA sale remains relevant for capital gains even though the repurchase is inside the wrapper.
- Check eligibility and capacity. Confirm that you can subscribe to an ISA in the relevant tax year and that the proposed subscription fits your remaining allowance and the provider’s rules.
- Identify the exact units to sell. Obtain the current holding, pooled cost, accumulation-income certificates and any recent transactions. Decide whether a full or partial sale is appropriate.
- Estimate the disposal. Use the expected sale price, charges, share-pooling rules and 30-day matching rules. Include losses and the annual exempt amount only after checking the rules for the current tax year.
- Place the Bed and ISA instruction. The provider normally sells the taxable holding, moves the cash into the ISA and purchases the selected investment. Read the order terms to see whether the steps are simultaneous or sequential.
- Check the contract notes. Record the actual sale proceeds, fees, dates and the investment purchased inside the ISA. Market prices can differ from the estimate.
- Keep the outside-ISA disposal records. The ISA wrapper protects future ISA income and gains; it does not remove the tax calculation for the sale that funded it.
Where a provider offers an in-specie transfer into an ISA, verify the legal mechanism. A transfer that is actually a sale and cash subscription has the CGT consequence described above; do not rely on the label alone.

Timing a switch to reduce avoidable tax
Use the tax year deliberately
Capital-gains allowances and rates can change. Before trading, check the current HMRC rules for the tax year in which the disposal will settle. If you have flexibility, compare completing the disposal before or after 5 April, taking account of market risk and the possibility that tax rules change.
Recommended Free Tools
Consider partial disposals
A partial switch can spread disposals across tax years or use losses and available allowance without selling the entire holding. It also leaves part of the original fund exposed to its duration, credit and liquidity risks. Model the actual units sold and apply the identification rules to each disposal.
Do not manufacture losses without a reason
Selling and immediately rebuying solely to create a paper loss may be affected by the 30-day matching rules and still incurs spread, dealing charges and market risk. A tax outcome should not override whether the replacement fund is suitable.
Allow for time out of the market
Some platforms execute the sale, cash transfer and repurchase at different valuation points. While the transaction is pending, gilt prices and interest-rate expectations can move. Ask the provider how orders are priced, when cash becomes available and what happens if the chosen fund is temporarily unavailable.

A gilt fund can differ materially from its replacement even when both are described as “low risk”. Before switching, compare:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Duration: longer-duration funds usually react more to changes in interest rates than shorter-duration funds.
- Credit exposure: a fund holding only high-quality government debt has different default and spread risks from one holding corporate or lower-rated bonds.
- Liquidity: the ability to trade promptly can vary by fund, dealing cycle and market conditions.
- Income policy: distributing and accumulation classes create different cash-flow and recordkeeping requirements.
- Charges and spread: ongoing fees, entry or exit charges and the bid-offer spread reduce the amount invested.
- Wrapper: an ISA or pension may shelter future income and gains, but each wrapper has eligibility, access and contribution rules.
A tax saving that leaves you with unsuitable duration or credit risk is not an efficient switch. Write down the investment reason for changing and then test whether the tax cost is proportionate.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Assuming “gilt” means CGT-free
Problem: the investor treats a fund as if it were a direct gilt. Fix: verify whether you own a government security or units in a collective vehicle before applying the exemption.
Relying on the platform’s word “switch”
Problem: an exchange is omitted from the tax records because no cash was withdrawn. Fix: obtain the disposal value and contract note for the old units and record the acquisition of the new units separately.
Ignoring accumulation income
Problem: retained distributions are omitted from allowable cost, overstating the later gain. Fix: obtain each relevant tax certificate and add only the taxable amount that the certificate reports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing a Bed and ISA as if it were a tax-free transfer
Problem: the investor assumes the ISA shelters the pre-existing gain. Fix: calculate the outside-ISA sale first, then record the subscription and the ISA purchase as separate events.
Using incomplete transaction history
Problem: missing transfers or purchases on another platform distort the pool and the 30-day matching. Fix: collect records from every account that held the same fund and reconcile units and dates before filing.
A practical switch checklist
- Confirm your tax residence and the account type.
- Identify the security: direct gilt, UK-authorised fund, offshore reporting fund or another collective.
- Download contract notes, purchase history, distributions and accumulation-fund certificates.
- List any same-day and 30-day purchases around the proposed disposal.
- Rebuild the pooled cost and include allowable accumulation income and dealing costs.
- Estimate proceeds at a realistic price, allowing for spread and fees.
- Check current CGT rates, annual exempt amount, losses and ISA subscription capacity for the relevant tax year.
- Compare taxable sale-and-repurchase, Bed and ISA and retaining the holding while redirecting new contributions.
- Assess the replacement fund’s duration, credit quality, liquidity, income class and charges.
- Save the final contract notes and update your capital-gains schedule immediately after settlement.
When to obtain professional advice
Use a regulated tax or investment adviser when the gain is large relative to your available allowance, records are incomplete, you have changed residence, the fund’s reporting status is unclear, or several accounts and disposals interact. Ask the adviser to explain which units are matched, how accumulation income is treated and which tax year contains the disposal.
Professional advice is particularly valuable before a large Bed and ISA transaction: the wrapper may be desirable for future tax shelter, but the initial sale can create a liability that must be budgeted for. Keep the adviser’s calculation with your contract notes and certificates.
What happens after the switch
For the taxable account, retain the disposal calculation and monitor future distributions from the replacement fund. For the ISA, keep subscription and dealing confirmations even though ISA income and gains generally do not need to be declared on a tax return. If you later move the ISA between providers, use the formal ISA transfer process rather than withdrawing and resubscribing, so you do not accidentally use additional allowance.
Review the holding when your objective, time horizon or tolerance for interest-rate and credit risk changes. A future disposal will need its own calculation using the replacement fund’s acquisition records and any later accumulation-income certificates.
