Open the replacement checking account before changing anything at the old bank. Then list every deposit, withdrawal, check, transfer, and bill-payment instruction; redirect income with each payer; move payments on a schedule that starts after the first new deposit is expected; keep enough money in the old account for uncleared items; and close it only after both accounts show a clean transition. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) gives the same core instruction: “When moving your checking account to a new bank or credit union, open the new account first and update any automatic transactions, direct deposit, or payment paperwork.” The CFPB answer was last reviewed April 22, 2024.
What a safe bank switch looks like
Switching a checking account is not one change. It is a coordinated move of money arriving from employers, government agencies, other accounts, merchants, and your old bank’s bill-pay system. Each sender or payment system may have its own update process. A replacement account can be open in minutes while a payroll or benefit change takes several weeks to appear, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

The safest sequence is to run both accounts temporarily. The old account remains available for checks and debits already in motion; the new account receives redirected deposits and newly scheduled payments. When the new account has received income and paid bills successfully, transfer the remaining balance, request closure of the old account, and keep written proof.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the new checking account first.
- Inventory every recurring transaction and every payment method.
- Ask each income payer when the first deposit will reach the new account.
- Change merchant debits and old-bank bill-pay instructions separately.
- Keep a sufficient balance in the old account and watch both accounts.
- Close the old account only after the transition is verified.
Choose and open the replacement account first
Do not begin by closing the old account or moving its entire balance. First confirm that the new institution has accepted your application, issued the account and routing information, and made the account usable for deposits and payments.

Compare accounts against your actual needs
Use the institution’s current disclosures rather than an old advertisement. The CFPB and Consumer.gov suggest comparing the following items:
| Comparison point | Questions to answer before opening |
|---|---|
| Fees | What monthly, overdraft, nonsufficient-funds, ATM, wire, or other charges apply? What actions waive a fee, and can you meet those conditions consistently? |
| Minimums | Is there a minimum opening deposit or ongoing balance? What happens if the balance falls below it? |
| Access | Are branches and in-network ATMs convenient for your location and cash needs? What are the operating hours? |
| Digital services | Can you use the mobile and online features you need, including alerts, transfers, statements, and bill pay? |
| Customer service | How can you reach support, and does the service reputation fit the help you are likely to need? |
Ask what identification and other documents are required. Save the new account number, routing number, opening disclosures, and any instructions for incoming transfers. Do not assume a feature is free or included without checking the current terms for your location and account type.
Set a transition calendar
Write down each bill’s due date, the normal date money leaves the old account, the date its account information will be updated, and the earliest date the new account should be used. Leave room for processing delays. The FDIC says bill-pay changes can take a few days and direct-deposit changes can take several weeks; neither is a guaranteed universal timeline.
Build a complete transaction inventory
Review at least several months of old-account statements and transaction history, not just the list of payments you remember. Search for transactions that occur quarterly, annually, or irregularly. Include payments made by another person from a joint account and transfers connected to savings or investment accounts.
| Transaction group | Examples to record | Information to capture |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming deposits | Employer payroll, Social Security, pension, unemployment or other benefits, tax-related deposits, payments from clients, and transfers from another account | Payer, contact or change portal, deposit frequency, usual amount, and expected first date at the new bank |
| Merchant-authorized debits | Utilities, rent, mortgage, insurance, subscriptions, loan payments, credit cards, and other companies authorized to withdraw funds | Biller, account or customer number, due date, amount or range, and effective date of new account information |
| Old-bank bill pay | Recurring or scheduled payments that you instructed the old bank or credit union to send | Payee, amount, delivery date, recurrence, next scheduled payment, and cancellation or stop procedure |
| Checks | Outstanding personal checks, rent checks, checks to contractors, and checks written but not yet deposited | Check number, amount, payee, date written, and whether it has cleared |
| Automatic transfers | Transfers to savings, loans, brokerage accounts, household accounts, or another person | Sending account, receiving account, frequency, amount, and which institution’s instruction controls it |
Mark each item as “moved,” “still at old bank,” or “one-time/pending.” Download statements and save screenshots or confirmations as you update instructions. This inventory is your control list when a payment appears in the wrong account.

Redirect paychecks and other incoming money
Employer payroll
Use your employer’s payroll portal or human-resources process to submit the new routing and account numbers. Some employers require a form, identity verification, or a canceled check or bank letter. Ask payroll exactly which pay date will be the first one sent to the new account. Until that date is confirmed, leave the old account open and funded.
Check the new account after the expected payday. If the deposit does not arrive, contact payroll first to verify the effective date and account information, then contact the new institution if payroll confirms it sent the money.
Social Security and other benefits
Update each agency or benefit payer through its approved process. Do not assume changing payroll changes a government or pension deposit. Record the confirmation or reference number, the date the change was submitted, and the first payment date affected.
Transfers from your own accounts
For an automatic transfer from savings or another institution, identify where the instruction is stored. If the old checking account is the destination, change the instruction at the sending institution. If the old bank initiates the transfer, replace or cancel that instruction there and create a new one at the appropriate institution. Test the first transfer while both accounts are open.
Move outgoing payments without paying twice
There are two different arrangements that are often confused. In a merchant-authorized automatic debit, you give a company permission to withdraw from your account. In recurring bank bill pay, you tell the bank or credit union to send money to the company. A complete switch may require changes in both places.

Merchant-authorized automatic debits
- Open the biller’s website or contact its billing department.
- Replace the old account and routing numbers with the new ones.
- Ask when the new information becomes effective and whether one final debit will still use the old account.
- Save the confirmation and check the new account after the first debit.
Do not merely delete a biller from the old bank’s bill-pay screen if the company itself is authorized to debit the account. The authorization is held by the biller and must be updated with that company.

- List every recurring and future-dated payment in the old bank’s bill-pay area.
- Identify the next scheduled delivery date and whether the old bank sends an electronic payment or a paper check.
- Cancel or stop the old instruction according to the old institution’s procedure.
- Create the payment at the new bank, using a date after the first expected deposit and early enough for the biller’s due date.
- Check both systems so the old and new instructions cannot send the same payment.
Bill-pay changes can take a few days. Keep the old instruction active only when you have deliberately chosen it for a specific final payment and have not created a second instruction for that same payment. Otherwise, duplicate payments can occur.
| Payment method | Where to make the change | Main transition risk |
|---|---|---|
| Company withdraws automatically | With the merchant, utility, lender, card issuer, or other biller | The first debit may still hit the old account, or the new information may not yet be effective |
| Old bank sends recurring bill pay | Cancel or change the instruction at the old bank, then establish it at the new bank | Both banks send a payment, or neither sends it after an early cancellation |
| One-time manual payment | Use the account selected for that individual payment | The selected account lacks available funds on the payment date |
Run both accounts during the overlap
Keep enough money in the old account to cover every known pending debit, uncleared check, and applicable minimum-balance requirement. There is no universal buffer amount: calculate it from your own inventory and add room for transactions you may have missed.
- Review the old account every few days for checks, automatic debits, fees, and returned payments.
- Review the new account for deposits, new bill payments, and unexpected charges.
- Turn on available transaction or low-balance alerts at both institutions.
- Reconcile each item against your inventory and mark the date it cleared.
- Keep another payment method available if an old debit does not move as expected.
If an account lacks sufficient funds, the bank may assess an overdraft or nonsufficient-funds fee, and the company attempting the withdrawal may charge its own fee. A payment that is rejected can also become late. Monitoring both balances during the overlap reduces those risks.
Transfer the remaining balance
Wait until the first redirected deposits have arrived and the bills scheduled for the transition have cleared or are confirmed in the new account. Then move only the remainder needed to leave the old account ready for any final item.

| Method | What it involves | Timing consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic transfer | Initiate a transfer between institutions using the available transfer process | Check each institution’s processing and availability rules before relying on the funds for a payment |
| Cashier’s check | Ask the old institution to issue an official check payable as instructed, then deposit it at the new institution | Confirm any issuance cost and when the new institution will make the deposit available |
| Personal check | Write a check from the old account and deposit it into the new one | The CFPB notes that a personal check may take longer to become available at the new institution |
The available information does not establish one transfer method as best for every reader. Choose based on the institutions’ current rules, the amount, urgency, and your need to keep a reserve for final old-account transactions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Close the old account and keep proof
- Confirm that payroll, benefits, transfers, and billers are using the new account.
- Check the old account for pending items and wait for them to clear or resolve them directly.
- Move the remaining balance using your chosen method, leaving no amount that could trigger a minimum-balance charge.
- Ask the old institution to close the account through its stated process.
- Request written confirmation showing the account is closed and the effective date.
- Save the confirmation, final statement, transfer receipt, and your transaction inventory.
Do not treat a zero balance as proof of closure. An account can remain open, incur a fee, or accept a late-presented check unless the institution has actually closed it.
Troubleshoot common transition failures
The paycheck still went to the old account
Check the payroll change’s effective date and confirm the new routing and account numbers. Leave the old account open and funded until payroll confirms the next affected pay date. Once the deposit arrives, update your calendar rather than assuming all future deposits have moved.
A bill was withdrawn from the old account
Determine whether the biller’s debit authorization was updated. If it was not, update the biller directly and keep enough funds in the old account for the debit. If you also scheduled the payment through the new bank, cancel one instruction and contact the biller if a duplicate payment is possible.
Recommended Free Tools
A bill was paid twice
Compare the old bank’s bill-pay history with the new bank’s history and the biller’s account. Ask the biller how it will apply or return the extra payment, and disable the duplicate recurring instruction. Keep records of the dates, amounts, and confirmation numbers.

A payment was rejected or a fee appeared
Check which account was presented, the available balance at the time, and whether the transaction was a merchant debit or bank bill pay. Contact the bank and the company separately because each may have its own fee or correction process. Use another payment method if the due date is approaching, then document the replacement payment.
The old bank says an item is still pending
Do not close the account until the item clears or the payee confirms cancellation. Keep the amount required for that item and continue monitoring. A check or debit can appear after you believe the account is finished.
Records and security during the move
Store confirmations in a secure location, including payroll and benefit updates, biller changes, new-bank bill-pay setups, transfer receipts, and the old bank’s closure letter. Compare the account and routing numbers character by character before submitting them. Use the institutions’ official websites or phone numbers from statements or cards, and avoid sending account details through an unverified message.
Keep statements from both institutions until all expected deposits, payments, refunds, and tax-related records have been reconciled. The exact retention period depends on your circumstances; retaining the transition file through the next statement cycle makes it easier to prove what happened if a payment is disputed.
