If the Income Tax Department says your refund failed, submit a new request through the e‑Filing portal after making sure an eligible bank account is validated. Sign in, open Services > Refund Reissue, choose the failed refund, select the validated account, complete e‑verification, and save the transaction ID. You can then monitor the request under View Refund Reissue Request.
A refund reissue request is available only for a refund already associated with a filed return and marked as failed. It does not create a refund entitlement, recalculate your return, or settle a separate assessment dispute.

What a refund reissue request does
The Income Tax Department’s refund-reissue facility lets a registered e‑Filing user ask the department to send a refund again after the original credit failed. The failed refund normally appears against a return that has already been processed with a refund determined.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn the department’s Refund reissue User Manual, the facility is described as being available to registered users on the e‑Filing portal. You select the failed refund record and nominate a validated Indian bank account for the credit. The request must then be verified electronically.
#1 Best Overall
This process is different from filing a revised return or disputing a tax calculation. If your return has not been processed, shows no refund, or contains an assessment disagreement, a reissue request is not the remedy for that underlying issue.
Check these requirements before you begin
Have the following ready before opening the reissue screen:
| Requirement | What it means | What to do if it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Registered e‑Filing account | You must be able to sign in with the user ID and password for the taxpayer’s account. | Complete account registration or recover access before starting. |
| Failed refund record | The portal must show a refund connected with a filed return that failed to reach the taxpayer. | Check the return and refund information first. A reissue cannot create a refund that was never determined. |
| Validated bank account | The account selected for credit must be added to the portal and marked validated. | Add or correct the account under the bank-account service, then wait for validation before returning to reissue. |
| Supported e‑verification method | The request has to be verified electronically after submission. | Arrange access to Aadhaar-linked mobile verification, a registered digital signature certificate, or an eligible EVC route. |
| Accurate PAN and bank details | The bank account must be linked with the correct PAN, and the account and holder information must match. | Correct the bank or PAN records, remove unusable details if necessary, and submit the account for validation again. |
Use an account that is active and able to receive Indian rupee credits. Closed, frozen, blocked, inactive, or otherwise unusable accounts can cause another failure even when the account number was entered correctly.

-
Sign in to the e‑Filing portal
Open the Income Tax Department’s e‑Filing portal and sign in with the registered user ID and password. Use the taxpayer account to which the failed refund is linked; do not start from an unregistered profile.
-
Open the Refund Reissue service
From the dashboard, choose Services, then select Refund Reissue. The exact appearance of menus can change, but the service name and the route through Services are the labels described in the department’s manual.
-
Start a new request
Choose Create Refund Reissue Request. The portal should display refund records eligible for reissue. Select the record that matches the failed refund notice or the refund shown in your account, then continue.
If no record appears, do not select an unrelated return. Confirm that you are using the correct taxpayer account, check whether processing is complete, and review any separate notice explaining why the refund is not currently eligible.

Select the account for credit
Choose a bank account marked validated. Check the account number and holder details on the confirmation screen before proceeding. The selected account is the destination for the reissued credit, so do not rely on a partially entered or unverified account.
If the intended account is not listed, stop the reissue flow and use the portal’s bank-account feature to add it. Complete the requested validation. Return to Services > Refund Reissue only after the account shows a validated status.

Proceed to e‑Verify
Continue to the e‑Verify page. Select an available verification method and complete the prompts. The refund-reissue manual lists Aadhaar-registered mobile verification, a registered digital signature certificate, and EVC through an eligible bank account, demat account, or net banking as methods that may be available.
-
Record the confirmation
After verification succeeds, save the transaction ID shown by the portal. The department also sends confirmation to the email address and mobile number registered on the e‑Filing account. Keep the on-screen acknowledgment, the message, and a copy of the failed-refund notice together.

Check the request status
Use View Refund Reissue Request to check whether the request was recorded and to follow its status. Search using the details requested by the portal, and compare the displayed refund record with the transaction ID you saved.
Choose the right e‑verification method
Verification is a separate final step, not an optional confirmation. A request that is filled in but not successfully e‑verified may not be treated as submitted.
| Method | What you need | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar-based verification | A mobile number registered with Aadhaar and available to receive the verification code. | Make sure the phone can receive the code before beginning the request. |
| Digital signature certificate | A digital signature certificate registered for the e‑Filing account. | Confirm that the certificate is active and usable on the device before opening e‑Verify. |
| EVC through bank account | An eligible bank account connected to the EVC facility. | Use the bank’s current EVC process and enter the code within its validity period. |
| EVC through demat account | An eligible demat account that can generate an EVC. | Verify that the demat account is supported and the registered contact details are current. |
| EVC through net banking | Net-banking access with a participating bank and the required PAN linkage. | Start from the portal’s listed option rather than using an unlisted bank route. |
Available options can change as the portal is updated. Follow the methods displayed in your account and consult the current official user manual if an option described above is not shown.
Fix the bank account before trying again
The Centralised Processing Center’s sample guidance states that a validated Indian bank account is required for issuing a refund. If the account is missing or validation failed, submitting the same reissue request repeatedly will not correct the underlying data.
No validated account is available
Add an Indian bank account through the portal’s bank-account service. Enter the account number, IFSC and other requested details exactly as held by the bank, submit it for validation, and wait for the status to change to validated. Once validated, return to the refund-reissue service and select it.
PAN linkage or account details are wrong
The bank-account guidance identifies PAN linkage and invalid account details as common causes of validation failure. Check that the account is linked to the same PAN used for the income-tax return. Correct the PAN linkage with the bank where necessary, amend the details in the portal, and submit the account for validation again.
Account type is not accepted
An invalid account type can prevent validation. Review the account-type selection against the bank’s records. If the account cannot be corrected to an acceptable type, add a different active account that can receive the refund.
Rank #3
Account-holder name does not match
A CPC sample communication describes a refund failure caused by a mismatch between the name recorded against the PAN and the name on the bank account. That example does not prove that every failure is a name mismatch, but it shows why the names must be checked.

Correct the bank record or the relevant taxpayer record as appropriate, re-enter the account in the portal, and complete validation before raising the reissue request.
The account is closed, inactive, frozen or blocked
Do not nominate an account that cannot accept a credit. Contact the bank branch if the status is unclear. If the account cannot be restored in time, add another valid account, complete its validation and select that account for reissue.
What to do when electronic bank validation fails
The My Bank Account User Manual describes two alternatives when an account cannot be validated electronically:
- Use another account: Add an account that can be validated through an integrated bank, then select it in the reissue request.
- Submit an ECS mandate where applicable: If a refund is due and electronic validation is not possible, the manual describes submitting an ECS mandate form while raising the reissue request. Follow the portal’s instructions for the form, signatures and supporting details.
An ECS mandate is not a substitute for correcting an account that is closed, blocked or linked to the wrong PAN. It is an alternative route for cases in which the account is otherwise suitable but electronic validation cannot be completed.
Compare the available bank-account options
When more than one account is available, choose on practical eligibility rather than convenience alone. The account must be linked to the correct PAN, have matching holder information, be active and able to receive the credit, and show a validated status on the portal.
| Option | Best when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Existing validated account | The account already appears as validated and remains active. | Confirm the number, holder name and current bank status before selecting it. |
| New electronically validated account | The original account is closed, blocked, mismatched or otherwise unusable. | Ensure the new account is linked to the return’s PAN and passes portal validation. |
| Another integrated-bank account | The first bank cannot complete electronic validation. | Use an account and bank combination supported by the portal’s integration. |
| ECS mandate route | The refund applies but electronic validation cannot be completed for an otherwise suitable account. | Follow the portal’s mandate instructions and provide the requested signed details. |
Do not add several accounts with slightly different spellings or numbers hoping one will work. Each entry should reflect the bank’s records exactly. Repeatedly submitting an account with the same failed condition can delay the practical fix because the underlying PAN, name, account-type or account-status problem remains.
Read the failure message carefully
The wording shown by the portal or in a CPC communication determines the next useful action. A missing validated account calls for adding and validating an account. A PAN or name mismatch calls for correcting the records and revalidating. An inactive or closed account calls for a different usable account or a bank-side correction. These are different problems, even though each can appear as a failed refund.
A CPC example specifically attributes one failure to a mismatch between the name in the PAN record and the bank account. Treat that as an illustration, not as a diagnosis of every taxpayer’s failure. Match your action to the reason displayed for your own refund.

Track the request and understand the timing
Immediately after successful e‑verification, save the transaction ID and check View Refund Reissue Request. The confirmation email or mobile message is useful evidence, but the portal’s request-view page is the place to check the recorded status.
One CPC sample email estimates that credit may take 7–10 days after the reissue request is submitted. That figure is an estimate in a sample communication, not a universal service-level guarantee. Do not treat it as a promised payment date, particularly when bank validation, account corrections or additional processing are pending.
If the request remains unchanged beyond the period indicated in your communication, first confirm that e‑verification succeeded and that the selected account is still valid. Then review the status page for a new message or action. Keep the transaction ID available if you need to raise a service request or contact the department.
If the request does not appear or verification is incomplete
First distinguish between an absent request and an unverified request. A completed form without successful e‑verification may not be treated as submitted. Return to the portal and confirm whether the request appears in View Refund Reissue Request. If it does not, check that you used the account associated with the failed refund and that the account has not reverted to an unvalidated status.

For a digital signature, confirm that the registered certificate is available. For Aadhaar or EVC, confirm that the relevant mobile or account connection is current. The available methods depend on what the portal shows for your account.
When a request is recorded but no credit follows, do not immediately create duplicate requests. Compare the transaction ID, selected account and status message, then follow any action requested on the status page. If you need help from the department, provide the transaction ID and the failed-refund communication so the submission can be identified.
When a reissue request is not the right remedy
- No refund was determined: A reissue cannot establish that tax is refundable. Review the processed return and tax computation.
- The return is still being processed: Wait for processing or respond to the separate communication shown for that return.
- You disagree with the assessment: A reissue only addresses failed delivery of an already-determined refund. Use the appropriate rectification, response or appeal channel for a calculation or assessment issue.
- The portal shows a different taxpayer or return: Stop and sign in to the account associated with the notice. Do not submit a request against an unrelated record.
The portal’s labels and verification choices may change. If your screen differs from the steps above, rely on the current labels in your account and the latest Income Tax Department user manuals rather than forcing a menu path that is no longer displayed.

- Trying to reissue a refund before the return has been processed and a refund is shown.
- Selecting an account that is added but not marked validated.
- Using an account linked to a different PAN or with a different holder name.
- Ignoring an account-type error and submitting the same details again.
- Choosing a closed, frozen, blocked or inactive account.
- Leaving the e‑Verify page without completing verification.
- Failing to save the transaction ID or relying only on an email alert.
- Submitting duplicate requests instead of reading the status of the first request.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reissue an income-tax refund on the portal?
Sign in to the registered e‑Filing account, open Services > Refund Reissue, choose Create Refund Reissue Request, select the failed refund and a validated bank account, complete e‑verification, and save the transaction ID. Use View Refund Reissue Request to track it.
Can I submit a refund reissue request if my return is still being processed?
No. The facility addresses a refund that was already determined and then failed. It does not create a refund entitlement or replace a response, rectification or appeal for a return that is still being processed or disputed.
Why is my bank account not available in the reissue screen?
The account may not have been added or may not have completed validation. Add it through the portal’s bank-account service, correct any errors, wait until it is marked validated, and then return to the reissue flow.
What does a validated bank account mean?
It is an account added to the e‑Filing portal whose details have passed the required validation and that is eligible to receive the refund. It should be active, usable and linked to the correct PAN.
What if bank validation fails?
Check PAN linkage, account number and IFSC, account type, account-holder name and the account’s active status. Correct the bank or portal record, re-enter the account and validate again, or use another active account. If electronic validation is not possible, the manual describes another integrated account or an ECS mandate route where applicable.
Can I use an account in someone else’s name?
The account and holder information must match the taxpayer and the PAN linkage required by the portal. A name mismatch can cause failure, so use an account whose records correspond to the taxpayer details.
Which verification methods can I use?
The manual lists Aadhaar-registered mobile verification, a registered digital signature certificate, and EVC through an eligible bank account, demat account or net banking. Use only the options displayed for your account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How long does a reissued refund take?
A CPC sample email estimates 7–10 days after submission, but that is not a universal guarantee. Check the request status, confirm that e‑verification succeeded and make sure the selected account remains valid.
Where can I find the refund reissue status?
Sign in and open View Refund Reissue Request. Use the transaction ID and other details requested by the portal to match the recorded request and its current status.
What should I do if I submitted the request but forgot to e‑verify it?
Check the request-view page first. An unverified form may not be treated as submitted. Follow the portal’s available verification prompt or start the process again only after confirming whether a request was recorded.
The Bottom Line
For a failed Indian income-tax refund, first fix or add a bank account until it is validated and linked to the correct PAN. Then use Services > Refund Reissue, select the failed refund and validated account, complete e‑verification, save the transaction ID and monitor View Refund Reissue Request. A sample CPC notice mentions 7–10 days for credit, but treat that as an estimate rather than a guaranteed deadline.
