To stop only breaking-news alerts, open SmartNews, tap Profile, choose the Settings gear, open Notifications, and switch off Breaking News. That in-app control is available on both iOS and Android.
To silence every SmartNews alert, use your device settings. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Notifications → SmartNews and turn off Allow Notifications. On Android, open Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → SmartNews → Notifications, then disable all notifications or only selected categories.

Choose the smallest control that solves the problem
SmartNews has separate notification categories. Turning off Breaking News does not necessarily stop Scheduled Pushes, Local Updates, Personalized Picks, or Point Campaigns. Decide whether you want to remove one type of alert or block the app completely before changing a setting.

The category approach is more selective and easy to reverse without affecting other SmartNews alerts. The operating-system switch is the broadest and fastest way to stop everything.

Turn off SmartNews breaking-news alerts in the app
Use this method when you want to keep some SmartNews notifications but do not want urgent-news alerts.
- Open the SmartNews app.
- Tap Profile in the bottom bar.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Open Notifications.
- Switch off Breaking News. If you also dislike another alert type, switch off that category on the same screen.
If the Profile icon is missing
SmartNews says the bottom bar can be hidden in some views. From any channel tab, drag downward to reveal the bottom bar, then tap Profile and continue to Settings → Notifications.
Turn off every category without using phone settings
The Notifications screen lists the available SmartNews categories. You can turn off each unwanted category there, including Breaking News, Scheduled Pushes, Local Updates, Personalized Picks, and Point Campaigns. This leaves the phone’s general notification permission in place while stopping the categories you select.
What “Breaking News” means
SmartNews defines Breaking News as “Immediate notifications regarding important or urgent news unfolding at this moment.” It is therefore a distinct alert stream, not a label for every notification sent by the app.
- Breaking News: immediate alerts about important or urgent events unfolding now.
- Scheduled Pushes: notifications delivered according to a schedule.
- Local Updates: alerts tied to local news or local information.
- Personalized Picks: recommendations selected for your interests or reading activity.
- Point Campaigns: notifications connected with SmartNews point campaigns.
If you disable only Breaking News and still receive a SmartNews alert, the alert may belong to one of these other categories. Check the category names in Profile → Settings → Notifications rather than assuming the Breaking News switch failed.

Block every SmartNews notification on iPhone or iPad
Use the device-level switch when you want a complete block regardless of which SmartNews category generated the alert.
- Open the iPhone or iPad Settings app.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to and select SmartNews.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
With Allow Notifications disabled, SmartNews cannot display its notifications through the iOS or iPadOS notification system. This supersedes the individual choices inside SmartNews. To resume alerts later, return to the same screen and turn Allow Notifications on; then review the in-app categories so only the types you want are enabled.

Choose the system-level block if you need an immediate, all-or-nothing stop, if you are unsure which SmartNews category is producing an alert, or if you have already disabled several in-app categories and want a single definitive control. Use the in-app switch instead when preserving selected SmartNews alerts matters.
Block or filter SmartNews notifications on Android
Android menu labels differ by version and manufacturer, but the controls are located under the SmartNews app’s notification settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps. On some Android versions this is labeled Apps & notifications.
- Select SmartNews.
- Tap Notifications.
- For a complete block, turn SmartNews notifications off. For a selective block, leave notifications enabled and switch off the unwanted categories.
Some Android phones show each notification category as its own switch; others place additional controls behind a category name. If you want to keep Local Updates but stop Breaking News, disable only the Breaking News category in this screen. If you want silence from the app, use the main SmartNews notification switch.

Why Android instructions may look different
Android manufacturers and operating-system versions use different names and layouts. You may see Apps & notifications instead of Apps, or find notification categories on a secondary page. Start with the SmartNews entry under Apps and follow the Notifications label wherever it appears; the purpose of the setting is the same.

If SmartNews alerts keep arriving
Persistent alerts usually mean that one control was changed while another remains active, or that the app and operating system have not yet synchronized their notification state. Work through the checks in order.
1. Reset the in-app notification choices
- Open SmartNews and go to Profile → Settings → Notifications.
- Turn the unwanted notifications off.
- Turn the notification controls back on, then set the categories you actually want.
SmartNews recommends this off-and-on reset when notification behavior does not match the choices shown in the app.
2. Recheck the operating-system permission
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Notifications → SmartNews and verify Allow Notifications. If it is on, inspect the in-app categories again. On Android, open Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → SmartNews → Notifications and confirm that neither the main switch nor an unwanted category is enabled.
3. Check iOS Background App Refresh while troubleshooting
On iOS, SmartNews advises checking Settings → General → Background App Refresh and ensuring SmartNews is enabled when investigating notification delivery behavior. This check is relevant to troubleshooting delivery; it does not replace the notification permission switch used to block alerts.

4. Check Android battery and background restrictions
Android battery controls can place an app in a Sleeping or Restricted state. Open your phone’s battery-optimization or background-usage controls and make sure SmartNews is not being limited while you troubleshoot. Manufacturer terminology varies, but look for settings that control battery optimization, background usage, sleeping apps, or restricted apps.
5. Restart the device
After changing both the in-app and system settings, restart the phone or tablet. Then check whether a new SmartNews alert appears and identify its category before changing more settings.
6. Allow for synchronization after major changes
SmartNews says that after reinstalling the app, switching devices, or changing notification settings, delivery may take up to seven days to fully stabilize. This is a troubleshooting window, not an instruction to accept unwanted alerts for seven days. Confirm the device-level block first; if Allow Notifications is off on iOS or the Android SmartNews notification switch is off, the operating system is still configured to block the app.

When an alert appears after you changed a setting, inspect its wording and any category label shown in the notification. Match it against the five SmartNews categories:

- A message arriving at a planned time points to Scheduled Pushes.
- A nearby or regional headline points to Local Updates.
- A recommendation based on your interests points to Personalized Picks.
- A message about points or a promotion inside the SmartNews points system points to Point Campaigns.
Once you identify the category, return to the in-app Notifications page or the Android category controls and disable that specific stream. On iPhone or iPad, a complete block remains the reliable option when the category cannot be identified.

Which method should you use?
You only dislike breaking-news interruptions
Disable Breaking News in SmartNews. This preserves the possibility of receiving other categories you intentionally leave enabled.
You want to keep one or two types of SmartNews alerts
Use the in-app category controls, and on Android use the operating-system category switches if they offer a more precise filter. Check every listed category rather than changing only Breaking News.
You want no SmartNews alerts at all
Use the iPhone or iPad Allow Notifications switch, or turn off SmartNews notifications from Android’s app settings. This avoids having to identify every category separately.

A category switch is reversible and limits the change to SmartNews preferences. A system-level block is also reversible, but it suppresses every SmartNews category until you turn the device permission back on.
Restore SmartNews notifications later
To resume selected alerts, open SmartNews → Profile → Settings → Notifications and enable the categories you want. On iPhone or iPad, also turn on Settings → Notifications → SmartNews → Allow Notifications. On Android, return to Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → SmartNews → Notifications and enable the main switch or the individual categories you choose. If alerts do not resume immediately after reinstalling, switching devices, or changing notification settings, SmartNews documents a possible stabilization period of up to seven days.
