Start with the app’s own Location permission. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select the campus app, and choose Never or While Using the App; on Android, use Settings > Location > App location permissions (or App info > Permissions > Location) and choose Don’t allow, Ask every time, or Allow only while using the app. Turn off precise location when approximate location is enough. These controls stop the app from using the phone’s operating-system location permission, but they do not prove that no location-related information can be inferred from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, IP address, account activity, or institutional systems.
What changing the Location permission actually does
A campus app can request the phone’s location to provide a campus map, navigation, shuttle updates, building services, attendance features, emergency functions, or other location-dependent tools. The operating system mediates that request through a per-app permission. Denying the permission prevents the app from using the device location service through that permission. Restricting it to foreground use or approximate location reduces what the app can receive while preserving more functionality.

That is a meaningful privacy control, not a promise of invisibility. An app or university may still learn location-related information through network connections, IP addresses, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth infrastructure, check-ins, account records, or data supplied directly by you. Apple advises reviewing an app’s own privacy practices because information provided to a third-party app is governed by that app’s terms and policies (Apple’s Location Services privacy guidance). Google explains that Android location estimation can use wireless signals and device sensors (Google’s Android location-settings guidance). Check the named campus app’s privacy notice and your institution’s IT or privacy office for a complete picture.

Choose the least access that still supports the feature you need
| Setting | Precision | When the app can request location | Typical functionality cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denied (Never or Don’t allow) | No operating-system location permission | None through the device location service | Any feature that requires live device location may stop working or ask you to change the setting |
| Ask every time (Android where available) | Depends on the approval you give | Only after each request is approved | More prompts; a location-dependent action may fail when you decline |
| While Using the App / Allow only while using the app | Precise or approximate, depending on the separate precision control | During active use, rather than continuous background access | Background alerts, automatic geofencing, or passive updates may not work |
| Approximate | Reduced precision | Same timing choice as the permission above | Turn-by-turn or room-level features may be less useful |
| Always / Allow all the time | Precise or approximate, depending on the app and OS | Foreground and background, subject to platform rules | Most expansive access; review whether the feature genuinely needs it |
Approximate is still location information. Apple describes approximate location as an area of about 10 square miles on its privacy feature page (Apple Privacy — Features), while Google describes Android approximate location as an area of about 3 square kilometers (Manage location permissions for apps). Those are platform descriptions, not a guarantee of the area delivered in every context.

How to turn off location for one campus app on iPhone
Set the app to Never
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Find and select the campus app.
- Choose Never.
Use this when the app has no feature that needs your device location. The app can remain installed and can still use functions that do not depend on Location Services. A location-based map, shuttle estimate, attendance check, or safety feature may be unavailable or may ask you to re-enable access. The exact choices shown can vary by iOS version and by what the app requested; Apple documents these controls in About privacy and Location Services in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.
Keep the app working during active use
- Return to the campus app’s page under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Select While Using the App.
- Open the app only when you need the location-dependent feature, then close it when finished.
This is less permissive than background access. It is a practical choice for a campus map or navigation tool that you use on demand, but it may prevent background alerts or automatic updates. Do not assume that “While Using” supports every feature; check the app’s explanation or the university’s feature documentation.
Turn off precise location
- Open the campus app’s entry at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Leave the timing permission at While Using the App (or another choice you need).
- Switch Precise Location off.
Use approximate location when a broad campus-area result is enough. A feature that needs a specific building entrance, room, or accurate walking route may become unreliable. Approximate location narrows precision; it does not turn location into non-location data.

If the app has a background option, ask why it needs location when you are not actively using it. Apple says iPhone can remind you about an app’s background location access and show the locations it used on a map, after which you can change the permission (Apple’s Location Services guidance). If the app works with foreground-only access, change it to While Using the App rather than leaving an “always” setting in place.
Use App Privacy Report to check access
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report.
- Turn on the report if it is not already enabled.
- Review the campus app’s access to sensitive data, including location, when records are available.
App Privacy Report is an access history, not a finding that an app acted unlawfully. It can show how often the app accessed location and the domains it contacted, helping you decide whether the permission level matches your use. Availability and labels depend on the iOS version.

Use the system-wide switch only when you want a broad stop
At Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, you can switch Location Services off for the device. Apple warns that doing so limits location-dependent behavior in Apple and third-party apps (Apple’s support page). This is wider than changing one campus app and may affect maps, weather, emergency functions, photos, and other services. Use the per-app setting first unless you intentionally want a device-wide change.
How to stop or limit one campus app on Android
Open the app’s location permission
Android menu names differ among manufacturers and OS versions. Start with either route:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Settings > Location > App location permissions, then select the campus app; or
- Long-press the app icon, tap App info > Permissions > Location.
If neither path appears, search Settings for Location or App permissions. Google documents the standard choices in Manage location permissions for apps.
Choose Don’t allow, Ask every time, or while using
- Open the campus app’s Location permission screen.
- Choose Don’t allow when the app does not need location.
- Choose Ask every time when you want to approve individual requests and your Android version offers that option.
- Choose Allow only while using the app when a feature needs location during active use but not continuously.
Android’s labels and available choices vary. Denying access can disable a location-dependent feature without disabling the entire app. If you later need the feature, return to the same screen and grant the narrowest permission that works.
Turn off precise location on Android 12 and later
- Open the campus app’s Location permission screen.
- Keep the timing choice you want, such as Allow only while using the app.
- Turn Use precise location off.
Google says Android 12 and later support a separate precise-location choice for each app (Android Help; Android device location settings). Approximate can be sufficient for a campus-area result but not for features requiring a close position.

Check Privacy Dashboard history
- Open Settings > Privacy, or Settings > Security and Privacy on some devices.
- Tap Privacy Dashboard.
- Select Location and inspect the campus app’s access.
Google’s cited guidance describes a history window of the last seven days on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12; the exact history and menu depend on the OS version and device (Manage permissions from the privacy dashboard). Use the dashboard to compare actual access with what the app’s feature requires, not as proof that no other system could observe your whereabouts.
Review device-wide location estimation before changing it
Location Accuracy
Android’s Location Accuracy setting can combine GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and device sensors, particularly indoors or near large buildings. Google provides separate menu paths for Android 12 and later versus Android 11 and earlier in Manage your Android device’s location settings. Turning Location Accuracy off can reduce the performance of maps and other location features across the device. It is a system-wide trade-off, not a replacement for revoking the campus app’s own permission.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning
Some Android versions expose Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning under the device’s location settings. Disabling them may reduce certain location-estimation capabilities, but it can also affect useful connectivity and nearby-device features. It does not guarantee that a university network, a cellular provider, or an app cannot observe an IP address or another network-side signal. Change these switches only when the broader effect fits your threat model.
Why one toggle cannot promise that all tracking has stopped
A denied Location permission answers a narrow question: whether the app may use the phone’s operating-system location service through that permission. It does not answer every question about location inference.
- Network information: A service may receive an IP address or observe which institutional network, access point, or portal you use.
- Direct disclosures: Check-ins, class attendance, event registrations, travel details, or a manually entered building can reveal location without a device-location request.
- Institutional records: A university may operate Wi-Fi, access-control, transportation, or safety systems with their own notices and retention rules.
- Other apps and services: Turning off permission for one campus app does not change the permissions of other apps.
These possibilities do not mean the campus app is using them. They mean that the per-app switch cannot establish a universal “no location data” result. For an institution-specific answer, read the app privacy notice, app-store listing, university privacy policy, and IT service-desk guidance.

Use app-store disclosures as clues, not a complete audit
Android’s location-sharing disclosure can indicate whether a developer says an app shares location data. Google states that the information is provided by the developer and that developers are responsible for the accuracy of their stated data-sharing practices (Find out if your Android apps share your location data). Google also says the disclosure may not be available for apps from some stores or on some devices. Therefore:
- Look at the disclosure before installing or while reviewing an installed app.
- Compare it with the app’s privacy policy and the university’s own notice.
- Do not treat a missing disclosure as proof that no data is shared.
- Do not treat a developer’s statement as an independent technical audit.
Apple’s platform controls likewise do not replace reading the third-party app’s terms and privacy practices (Apple Support).
A practical decision guide for students, staff, and visitors
If you never use a location feature
Set the campus app to Never on iPhone or Don’t allow on Android. Check the app after changing the setting so you know which, if any, functions are unavailable. Leave other apps’ permissions unchanged unless you intend a broader review.
If you need a map or directions occasionally
Use While Using the App on iPhone or Allow only while using the app on Android. Turn off precise location if a general campus position is sufficient. Expect features that depend on background updates or room-level accuracy to work differently.

If a safety or emergency feature is the reason for access
Read the institution’s explanation before denying permission. Confirm whether the feature needs foreground use, background access, precise location, or only a broad area. If the documentation is unclear, ask the university IT or privacy office what data is collected, when it is collected, who receives it, and how long it is retained.
Troubleshooting when the setting or feature does not behave as expected
The campus app is not listed
Confirm that you are viewing the phone’s app-permission screen, not a setting inside the app. Open the app once and retry the system menu. If it still does not appear, search Settings for the app name and Location; menu paths vary by OS version and manufacturer.
The app keeps asking for location
A denied permission can trigger another request when you open a feature that needs location. Decline it if you do not need that feature, or grant While Using/Allow only while using for the active task. Review the app’s privacy notice if the request is unexpected or unrelated to what you are doing.
A feature stopped working after you restricted access
Identify the specific feature rather than restoring unrestricted access to the whole app. Try approximate location first, then foreground-only access. If the feature still fails, the institution may have designed it to require precise or background location; verify that requirement with its support documentation before deciding whether the functionality is worth the additional access.
You changed a device-wide setting by mistake
Recheck the app’s individual permission first. On iPhone, make sure Location Services is on if you want any location feature to work, then set the campus app’s own permission. On Android, distinguish the app’s permission from Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning, and Bluetooth scanning. Restoring a device-wide setting does not automatically grant the app permission; the two decisions are separate.
Questions to ask the university or app provider
- Which named features require location, and do they require foreground, background, precise, or approximate access?
- Is location collected only while the feature is open, or also when the app is in the background?
- Is the data stored, shared with contractors, or linked to a student, employee, or visitor account?
- How long is location-related data retained, and how can you request deletion or access?
- What alternatives exist for visitors or users who deny location permission?
These questions turn a generic phone setting into an institution-specific privacy decision. The answer may differ between a university’s official app, a transit app, a learning platform, and a third-party event app.
The Bottom Line
For the strongest practical reduction, deny the campus app’s Location permission when you do not need a location feature. Otherwise use foreground-only access and approximate location, and inspect App Privacy Report or Android Privacy Dashboard. Treat those controls as limits on operating-system location access—not as proof that every possible source of location inference has disappeared—and verify the named app’s practices with its privacy notice and your institution.
