To start a mutual fund SIP in India, select the scheme and transaction channel, complete the investor and SIP application, authorise a recurring-payment mandate, and verify both registrations before the first instalment date. The SIP registration and the bank mandate are related but may have separate approval statuses and lead times, so use the selected fund house’s current instructions rather than assuming that another AMC’s process or dates apply.
What you need before starting a SIP
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a standing instruction to invest a specified amount in a mutual fund at a selected frequency. You are not registering a single universal product: the application screens, payment options, minimum instalments, permitted dates, frequency choices and cancellation rules can differ by AMC, scheme, investor type and transaction channel.

- The mutual fund scheme, plan or option you intend to transact in, after reading its current scheme documents and transaction instructions.
- The SIP amount, frequency, debit date and, where required, the number of instalments or end date.
- A bank account that the chosen mandate method supports and that can maintain the required balance on each debit date.
- Your current KYC and identity information. The documents and checks depend on your investor profile and the provider’s rules; there is no safe, universal checklist to apply to every application.
Use the selected AMC’s official transaction channel or an authorised platform. The available route, form fields and mandate technology are not identical across all schemes.
#1 Best Overall
Step 1: Choose the transaction route and scheme
Use a current, authorised channel
Start from the fund house’s current website, investor portal, service centre or an authorised transaction platform. Confirm that the platform is handling a new SIP rather than only a one-time purchase, and check which payment mandates it supports. A route that is available for one scheme or bank may not appear for another.
Read the scheme’s current terms
Before entering a date or amount, open the scheme’s current information and transaction documents. Check the minimum instalment, permitted frequencies, available debit dates, whether an end date or instalment count is mandatory, and any rules for changing or stopping the SIP. These terms are scheme-specific. Do not treat an amount or frequency shown in one AMC’s form as an industry standard.
Check investor eligibility and KYC status
Review the eligibility conditions for the investor type you are using, such as an individual, joint holder, minor or other category. The provider may validate KYC, bank ownership, tax status, contact details or other information during registration. If a check fails, correct the underlying record before repeatedly resubmitting the SIP.
Step 2: Complete the investor and SIP registration
Enter the investor details
Follow the current application flow and enter the requested personal, contact, bank and nominee information. Use the same spelling and identifiers that appear in your verified records. A mismatch can leave the SIP pending even when the payment authorisation succeeds.
Specify the SIP instruction
Select the scheme and provide the amount, frequency and debit date. Some forms also require an instalment count, tenure or end date. Review the first debit date separately from later dates: a date that is selectable in the form may still be too soon for the mandate approval process.

Review the summary before submitting
Save or download the application summary if the channel offers it. Confirm:
- Investor names, folio or account details and contact information.
- Scheme, plan, option and transaction type.
- Instalment amount and currency.
- Frequency, debit date and tenure or instalment count.
- Bank account to be debited and the mandate method selected.
- Any one-time purchase or initial instalment that is being submitted with the SIP.
Submitting the SIP request does not necessarily mean that the recurring bank mandate is already active. Treat the two confirmations as separate checkpoints.
Step 3: Register the recurring-payment mandate
The mandate is the authorisation that allows the AMC or its payment partner to collect later instalments from your bank account. The documented options include NACH or eNACH and UPI AutoPay, but availability depends on the AMC, bank, investor and transaction route.
NACH or eNACH
NACH is a recurring bank-debit framework; eNACH is its electronic registration flow where supported. A provider may ask for bank verification information and may present an online authorisation or a paper mandate. The exact fields, signature method, account validation and approval time are provider-specific.
UPI AutoPay
UPI AutoPay creates a recurring authorisation in a UPI application that supports the facility. The AMC’s flow normally sends you to the selected UPI app to review and approve the mandate. Check the account and amount displayed in the UPI approval screen before authorising it.

Compare the available methods without assuming one is best
| What to check | NACH/eNACH | UPI AutoPay |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Only where the selected AMC, bank and transaction route support it. | Only where the selected AMC, bank, UPI app and route support AutoPay. |
| Setup evidence | Helios Mutual Fund’s terms describe NACH/eNACH and supporting bank-verification information; those terms do not establish a universal process for all AMCs. | Mirae Asset Mutual Fund’s October 31, 2024 document describes registration through a UPI app supporting UPI AutoPay. |
| Lead time | Varies by provider and mandate type; use the confirmation supplied for your application. | Mirae Asset stated a minimum turnaround of three business days for SIP registration through its UPI AutoPay facility in the cited 2024 document. |
| Limit | Any amount or frequency limits must be confirmed in the current mandate terms. | The same Mirae Asset document stated a maximum AutoPay mandate limit of Rs. 15,000 under the NPCI guidelines it referenced. Confirm the live limit before relying on it. |
| Paper or bank evidence | May involve bank verification information and, for some paper flows, a signed form or cancelled-cheque evidence. | Typically uses an electronic UPI approval; the current AMC flow determines whether any additional verification is requested. |
| Confirmation | Look for both mandate acceptance and SIP registration, not only a submission receipt. | Keep the UPI approval result and the AMC’s SIP confirmation; either can remain pending while the other is complete. |
The table describes documented examples and decision points, not a ranking. If your preferred method is unavailable, use the route the selected AMC and bank currently support rather than changing schemes solely to obtain a particular mandate type.

Plan backwards from the first instalment. Mandate approval can take longer than the SIP form itself, and the lead time differs materially by AMC and payment route.
Documented timing examples
| Provider and document | Stated timing or limit | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Mirae Asset Mutual Fund, document dated October 31, 2024 | Minimum turnaround of three business days for SIP registration through UPI AutoPay; maximum AutoPay mandate limit stated as Rs. 15,000 under the referenced NPCI guidelines. | Use only as an example for that facility and document. Verify the current limit and processing time in the live application. |
| Nippon India Mutual Fund, 2025 instructions | At least 25 calendar days for submission of a new one-time bank mandate and SIP enrolment for NACH debit or autodebit. | This is a provider-specific instruction. It shows why a first date that works for one AMC may be impossible for another. |
Business days and calendar days are not interchangeable. A weekend or bank holiday can extend the elapsed time, and a pending KYC or bank verification can add another delay. Select the first date only after reading the current confirmation for your chosen route. If the system offers an earlier date than the stated processing period, do not assume that the debit will occur on that date; the mandate may not yet be active.
Keep the first instalment operationally simple
For a first SIP, choose a date that leaves time to observe the mandate status and maintain the balance. If you need the investment to begin by a particular month, submit the registration well before that month and allow for a rejected or incomplete authorisation to be corrected.
Step 5: Verify both registrations
After submitting the SIP and approving the mandate, check each status in the AMC portal, platform dashboard, email or other confirmation channel provided.
Rank #4
- Confirm that the SIP instruction shows the correct scheme, amount, frequency and first debit date.
- Confirm that the bank mandate shows as approved or active, not merely submitted, initiated or pending.
- Match the mandate amount and bank account with the SIP instruction. A mandate cap or account mismatch can prevent collection.
- Record the mandate reference, SIP registration number and support contact shown in the confirmation.
- Check the account balance before the first debit and leave enough for the instalment and any bank-imposed charges that may apply.
- After the scheduled date, check the bank statement and transaction history. A debit appearing in the bank account is not a substitute for checking that the correct number of units or transaction status was recorded by the AMC.
Is a cancelled cheque required for a SIP?
Not universally. One documented NACH process requests bank evidence, and some paper mandate workflows may ask for a cancelled cheque or equivalent proof. The Mirae Asset document describes a UPI AutoPay route that is authorised in a UPI app instead. These examples show why a cancelled cheque cannot be treated as a mandatory purchase or document for every SIP.
Follow the exact checklist displayed by the AMC or authorised platform. If it requests a cancelled cheque, provide one that meets its stated requirements, such as the account holder name and bank details being legible. If the electronic route does not request one, do not upload an unrelated cheque merely because another form did.
What happens when the debit date is a non-business day?
Holiday handling is set by the relevant scheme or provider. Helios Mutual Fund’s terms state that selected dates falling on non-business days move to the next business day. That is an example of a fund-specific rule, not a universal convention. Read the selected scheme’s current terms to understand whether the date shifts, whether the amount is collected on the next business day, and how the transaction date is recorded.

Common causes to check
- Insufficient balance or a debit block on the bank account.
- Mandate still pending, expired, cancelled or rejected by the bank.
- Bank-account details that do not match the verified investor record.
- Mandate amount or frequency not permitted by the active authorisation.
- Incorrect first date caused by ignoring the provider’s approval lead time.
- Technical or authentication failure in the UPI or bank authorisation flow.
Check the mandate status first, then the bank statement and the AMC transaction history. Contact the AMC or platform with the registration and mandate references if the status remains unclear. Do not create a second SIP immediately unless you have established whether the first instruction is active; duplicate registrations can lead to two debits.

Helios Mutual Fund’s 2025 terms state that three consecutive failed debits can cause cancellation for weekly, fortnightly or monthly frequencies, and two consecutive failures can cause cancellation for a quarterly frequency. Those thresholds apply to Helios’s terms only. Other schemes may use different counts, notices or reinstatement procedures, so read the applicable terms and act after the first failure rather than waiting for an automatic cancellation.

How to troubleshoot a delayed or missing first debit
The SIP says registered but the mandate is pending
Wait for the mandate’s stated approval period and check whether an authorisation request is still waiting in your bank or UPI app. If the provider’s deadline has passed, ask support whether the mandate was rejected, requires reauthorisation or was submitted with an incorrect bank detail. Do not assume that a registered SIP will collect without an active mandate.
The mandate says active but no debit appears
Check the confirmed first date, whether it fell on a non-business day, and whether the account had sufficient funds. Review both the bank statement and the AMC’s transaction history, because posting times can differ. If the date has passed without a debit or status update, supply the mandate reference when contacting the provider.
The application is rejected
Read the rejection reason before resubmitting. Correct KYC, bank-account, name, authentication or mandate-limit issues at their source. Resubmitting unchanged details can produce another rejection and may create multiple pending instructions.

First-SIP checklist
- Selected an authorised transaction route and opened the scheme’s current documents.
- Checked eligibility, KYC status and the information required for the investor type.
- Confirmed the SIP amount, frequency, date and tenure or instalment count.
- Confirmed that the bank and payment route support the selected mandate method.
- Allowed the provider’s stated lead time, using business or calendar days exactly as written.
- Completed and approved the mandate, then saved its reference.
- Verified separate SIP and mandate confirmations.
- Allowed sufficient balance on the confirmed debit date.
- Checked the first transaction in both the bank and AMC records.
- Read the scheme’s holiday, failure and cancellation terms.
Keep the process provider-specific
Official documents hosted by SEBI or published by an AMC can explain a particular fund house’s process without creating a universal rule for every mutual fund. The Mirae Asset three-business-day example, its stated Rs. 15,000 AutoPay limit, the Nippon India 25-calendar-day instruction and the Helios failure provisions are useful planning references, but they are dated or provider-specific. Before submitting a new SIP, verify the selected AMC’s live form, mandate support, first available debit date, KYC requirements and scheme terms.
