To stake SOL, use a compatible wallet to create or access a stake account, choose a validator, and delegate your tokens. Your stake becomes active at an epoch boundary, then earns rewards roughly every two-day epoch. To exit, deactivate the stake, wait for the cool-down, and withdraw once it is inactive. A separate lockup can keep SOL unavailable even after deactivation.
Native staking gives you direct validator delegation without a receipt-token smart contract. Liquid staking keeps your position represented by a transferable token, but adds pool, smart-contract, liquidity, and price risks. Neither method removes SOL price risk or guarantees a particular annual percentage yield (APY).

What Solana staking does
Staking locks the accounting status of your SOL to support Solana’s proof-of-stake network. You do not send coins to a validator’s personal wallet. Instead, a stake account records your delegation, and the validator earns vote credits by participating in consensus. Inflation rewards are distributed to eligible stake accounts according to network and validator conditions.
Solana calculates and issues rewards once per epoch. An epoch is approximately two days, although its exact duration can vary with network conditions. Rewards are credited to the stake account and automatically re-delegated as active stake, so compounding happens without a separate claim transaction.

Staking rewards are paid in SOL. Your SOL balance can therefore increase while its value in dollars, euros, or another fiat currency falls. Treat staking as a way to earn additional SOL, not as a guaranteed cash return.
What you need before staking
- A Solana-compatible wallet: Use a wallet that supports native stake accounts or the liquid-staking token you intend to hold.
- SOL for the stake and transaction fees: Leave a small amount unstaked to pay network fees and to avoid making the wallet unusable for later transactions.
- A validator decision: You can delegate directly to a validator, subject to that validator’s commission and operating record.
- Secure key storage: Anyone with your recovery phrase can control your funds. A hardware signer can reduce exposure of the signing key to an internet-connected device.
- A clear exit plan: Native SOL is not instantly spendable while it is activating, active, or deactivating.
How to stake SOL natively, step by step
1. Install and secure a wallet
Download a wallet from its verified source, create a new wallet or restore an existing one, and write the recovery phrase on paper or another offline medium. Never type the phrase into a website, send it to support, or store it in a screenshot or cloud note. Confirm that the wallet supports Solana native staking rather than only token swaps.
If you use a hardware signer such as a Ledger Nano S Plus, initialize it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and keep the device’s recovery phrase separate from your computer. Hardware signing helps prevent an online attacker from extracting the private key, but it cannot undo a transaction that you approve on the device.

2. Fund the wallet
Transfer SOL to the wallet’s Solana address. Verify the first and last characters of the address on the hardware device or wallet confirmation screen before approving a transfer. Keep enough SOL outside the stake account for fees and emergency spending.
3. Open the wallet’s staking screen
Wallet labels differ, but the native path is usually Stake, Earn, or Staking, followed by Native staking or Delegate. Select the amount of SOL and create a new stake account if the wallet asks. Review the account address and transaction details before signing.
4. Select a validator
Review commission, vote performance or vote credits, historical uptime, total delegated stake, and operational disclosures. Commission is taken from inflation rewards; the balance is distributed to delegators. A low commission is not automatically better if the validator has weak uptime or poor transparency.
The Solana Foundation states that it does not recommend any particular validator. A wallet’s first-listed validator is therefore not an official endorsement. Use independent validator dashboards and check the record immediately before delegating.
5. Delegate and confirm activation
Choose Delegate or Confirm stake and approve the transaction. The account will normally show an activating balance until an epoch boundary. It becomes reward-eligible only after activation completes. The wallet should display the status as activating, active, deactivating, or inactive.

How activation and rewards are timed
Delegations submitted during an epoch do not become instantly active. They enter an activation queue and are processed at an epoch boundary. Solana limits the amount of total active stake that can activate or deactivate to 25% of active stake in a single epoch. A small delegation often clears in the next epoch; a large network-wide queue can take multiple epochs.
Once active, the stake earns for each eligible epoch. Rewards depend on four main variables:
- Inflation: Solana’s published schedule began at 8% annual inflation, applies a 15% year-over-year disinflation rate, and targets 1.5% long-term inflation. These are token-issuance parameters, not a promised staking APY.
- Percentage of SOL staked: The inflation allocation is shared among active stake. Changes in the network’s staked percentage affect the yield per staked SOL.
- Validator voting performance: Missed votes and downtime reduce vote credits and can lower the rewards passed to delegators.
- Validator commission: The validator keeps the stated commission from inflation rewards before the remainder reaches delegators.
There is no single stable current APY to quote responsibly. A live figure must be tied to a specific epoch, validator, commission rate, and measurement date. If you compare a dashboard’s APY, confirm whether it is historical, projected, gross, or net of commission.

A simple way to interpret a quoted APY
Suppose a dashboard reports a 6% annualized rate for a particular epoch. That number describes the observed or projected rate under that epoch’s conditions; it does not guarantee that your SOL will earn 6% for the next year. The SOL balance compounds as rewards are re-delegated, while the fiat value still moves with the market price.
How to choose a validator
| Check | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | Determines how much of the inflation reward the validator keeps. | Is the rate competitive, and has it changed recently? |
| Vote credits and uptime | Shows how consistently the validator participates in consensus. | Are missed votes or outages frequent? |
| Stake concentration | Very large validators can increase concentration and correlated-failure exposure. | Would delegating here increase dependence on one operator or cluster? |
| Operational transparency | Published identities, infrastructure details, and contact channels make monitoring easier. | Can you verify who operates the validator and how incidents are reported? |
| Fee policy | Some operators may charge additional fees through associated services or pools. | What total cost applies to this exact delegation route? |
Recheck these items after delegating. A validator can change commission or experience downtime, and your wallet may not alert you immediately.
How to unstake SOL
1. Open the stake account
In the wallet, choose the stake account rather than the spendable wallet balance. Select Deactivate, Unstake, or the equivalent action and approve the transaction.
2. Wait for deactivation
The account changes to deactivating. It continues through epoch processing and cannot be withdrawn until the delegated balance is inactive. The 25% per-epoch transition limit can create a queue when many holders exit at once, so the delay may extend across several epochs.

The total time is therefore not a fixed number of hours. It depends on when you submit the request relative to the epoch boundary and how much stake is already activating or deactivating. With an approximately two-day epoch, an uncomplicated request may take a few days, while a congested transition queue can take longer.
Lockups: the restriction that can outlast deactivation
A stake-account lockup is an explicit rule that prevents withdrawal until a specified date or epoch. It is separate from normal activation and deactivation. You may deactivate a locked stake, but inactive SOL still cannot be withdrawn until the lockup expires.
After the lockup date or epoch passes, inactive tokens can be withdrawn without a separate unlock transaction. Before creating or accepting a stake account, inspect the lockup authority, release date or epoch, and any custodian conditions shown by the wallet. Do not assume that a deactivation request overrides a lockup.
Native staking versus liquid staking
Native delegation leaves your SOL in a protocol stake account associated with a validator. Liquid staking deposits SOL into a stake pool and gives you a receipt token, such as JitoSOL, representing your proportional claim. The receipt token can generally be transferred or used in decentralized-finance applications while the underlying stake remains delegated.
| Decision factor | Native delegation | Liquid staking |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidity and exit | SOL is unavailable during activation and deactivation; withdrawal follows epoch processing. | The receipt token can remain transferable, but selling it depends on market liquidity or the pool’s redemption process. |
| Validator choice | You select a validator directly and can redelegate after deactivation. | The pool chooses or distributes among validators according to its rules; diversification may be broader, but direct control is lower. |
| Custody and key exposure | You control the wallet and stake account keys. | You still control the wallet holding the receipt token, while the pool’s program controls the underlying staking operations. |
| Fees and commission | Your validator’s commission is deducted from inflation rewards. | Validator commission and pool fees reduce the value represented by the receipt token. |
| Smart-contract and depeg exposure | No receipt-token contract or token-price peg is required. | Program bugs, pool failure, liquidity shortages, or a receipt-token price below its underlying value can cause losses. |
| Operational simplicity | More steps at entry and exit, but the mechanics are transparent on-chain. | Usually one deposit transaction, with additional complexity in pool rules and token use. |
Liquid staking is not automatically safer because it is easier to trade. It exchanges the native withdrawal delay for additional contract, pool, liquidity, and exchange-rate risks. Native staking avoids those receipt-token risks but does not avoid validator performance risk or SOL price volatility.

SOL market risk
Rewards increase the number of SOL you hold, not the guaranteed fiat value. A market decline can outweigh months of rewards. If you need a known cash amount on a known date, staking is a poor substitute for liquid savings.
Activation and liquidity risk
You cannot treat an activating or deactivating stake as immediately spendable. Epoch timing and the 25% transition limit can delay access, especially during a broad market sell-off when many delegators exit together.

Validator and concentration risk
Downtime and missed votes lower realized rewards. High commission reduces your share. Concentrating too much SOL with one operator or infrastructure group can increase exposure to correlated failures, even when the validator appears reliable.
Slashing uncertainty
Solana’s reference documentation says protocol-level slashing is not implemented today. It also notes that future slashing could destroy part of a validator’s SOL for malicious behavior. Delegation is therefore a shared-risk, shared-reward arrangement: you benefit from successful operation and may be exposed to future protocol changes.
Liquid-staking and depeg risk
A receipt token can trade below the value of the underlying SOL if holders rush to sell, a pool pauses redemptions, or a contract suffers an exploit. Smart-contract audits and a non-custodial design reduce some custody concerns but cannot guarantee solvency, liquidity, or bug-free code.

A lost recovery phrase can permanently remove access. A malicious website can request an approval that transfers funds or changes a stake account. Read every transaction on the wallet or hardware device, verify the destination, and disconnect from sites you no longer use.
A safer operating routine
- Start small: Test a deposit, delegation, deactivation, and withdrawal with an amount you can afford to lose.
- Separate spending and staking accounts: Keep everyday SOL away from the stake account so a compromised application cannot access everything at once.
- Use a hardware signer for larger balances: Buy only from an authorized or clearly verified seller, initialize the device yourself, and never share its recovery phrase.
- Bookmark official wallet and validator pages: Avoid search-ad links and unsolicited messages that imitate wallet interfaces.
- Inspect the stake account after each action: Confirm the validator, amount, status, and lockup fields on a block explorer or trusted wallet view.
- Review the validator periodically: Check commission, vote performance, uptime, and concentration rather than delegating once and forgetting it.
- Keep an exit reserve: Maintain unstaked SOL for fees and near-term needs so an epoch delay does not force a rushed sale.
Troubleshooting common staking problems
“My stake is still activating.”
Activation is processed at epoch boundaries. Check the current epoch and the stake account status. If the network has more than 25% of active stake waiting to transition, the account may need additional epochs.
“I deactivated, but I cannot withdraw.”
Confirm that the account is fully inactive rather than deactivating. If it is inactive and withdrawal still fails, inspect the account for a lockup date, epoch, or custodian requirement.
“My rewards are lower than expected.”
Compare the validator’s current commission and vote performance with the period used by the quoted estimate. Network inflation, the share of SOL staked, and epoch conditions can all change the realized rate. A quoted APY may also be gross rather than net.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The receipt token is worth less than SOL.”
That is an exchange-rate or liquidity issue, not necessarily a missing reward. Check the pool’s redemption terms, withdrawal queue, market depth, and contract status before deciding whether to sell or redeem.
Bottom line for choosing a method
Choose native delegation if direct validator selection, transparent stake-account ownership, and avoidance of receipt-token contracts matter more than immediate liquidity. Choose liquid staking only after accepting pool, smart-contract, liquidity, and price-depeg risks in exchange for a transferable position. In either case, use a secure wallet, keep an unstaked reserve, verify lockup terms, and treat any APY as a changing estimate rather than a promise.
