To keep U.S. bank deposits within federal insurance limits, track your total at each FDIC-insured bank and within each ownership category. The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Moving money from checking to a savings account or CD at the same bank does not create another $250,000 limit; those accounts are generally added together. You can obtain separate bank-level coverage by using another FDIC-insured institution, or potentially use a different ownership category at the same institution when its rules and account records qualify.
The practical method is to identify the legal institution holding every deposit, group balances by owner and category, include accrued interest, and verify the result with the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) before relying on the arrangement.

What the $250,000 FDIC limit actually measures
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) applies its standard limit along three dimensions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Per depositor: the person or legal entity that owns the funds.
- Per FDIC-insured bank: the legal institution, not merely a branch, website, brand or account label.
- Per ownership category: such as single, joint, certain retirement, trust, business or government ownership, each with its own qualification rules.
For example, one person’s single-owner checking, savings, money market deposit and certificate of deposit (CD) accounts at the same insured bank are ordinarily combined. If their combined balance is $300,000, the first $250,000 falls within the standard limit and the remaining $50,000 is above that limit unless another applicable rule covers it. The FDIC’s consumer explanations are available in its Deposit Insurance FAQs and Deposit Insurance At A Glance.

Insurance covers principal and accrued interest through the date of a bank failure. A balance that is below $250,000 today can therefore move above the limit as interest posts. Include the current accrued amount, not just the original deposit, when checking your position.
Why opening more accounts at one bank usually does not help
The FDIC looks at ownership and institution, not the number of account numbers. A checking account, savings account, money market deposit account and CD with identical ownership at one bank are aggregated for that category. Opening each product separately does not provide four separate limits.
Branches are also not separate insured banks. An account opened at a downtown branch and another opened at the same bank’s online division generally count at the same institution. A different brand can likewise be operated by the same legal bank. Confirm the insured institution shown in the account agreement, deposit statement or the FDIC’s bank-information resources before treating an outlet as a separate bank.
A second bank can provide another $250,000 limit for the same depositor and category because the limit applies independently at each different FDIC-insured institution. The second bank must itself be FDIC-insured, and the deposits must be eligible deposits held in the stated ownership category.
A step-by-step way to distribute excess cash
- Inventory every deposit. Make a list of each checking, savings, money market deposit account and CD. Record the legal institution, account owner, ownership category, current balance and accrued interest. Do not rely only on the consumer-facing brand or branch name.
- Confirm insurance status. Verify that each legal institution is an FDIC-insured bank. If an account is held at a credit union, it is protected under NCUA share insurance instead of FDIC insurance and should be analyzed separately.
- Group by bank and category. For each depositor, add all accounts with the same ownership category at each bank. Include accrued interest and any deposits that will post before your planned transfer date.
- Identify the amount above the applicable limit. Compare each category total with the standard $250,000 limit, while recognizing that some categories have different calculation rules. Do not assume that another named person or another account automatically creates coverage.
- Move excess funds to another insured institution or a qualifying category. Using a genuinely different FDIC-insured bank gives a separate bank-level limit. A different ownership category at the same bank can also be separate, but only when the ownership, titling and required records satisfy that category’s rules.
- Run the complete arrangement through EDIE. Enter the actual owners, institutions, account types and balances in the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator. This is especially important for joint, retirement, trust, business and employee-benefit arrangements.
- Recheck after changes. Recalculate when you open or close an account, move money, change a beneficiary, retitle an account, add interest or change an owner. Coverage is based on the arrangement in place, not the plan you intended to establish.
How to organize a deposit-insurance worksheet
A simple ledger makes hidden aggregation easier to see. Use one line per account and keep these fields:
- Legal insured institution
- Consumer-facing bank or division name
- Depositor or legal owner
- Ownership category
- Account type
- Current principal
- Accrued interest
- Total balance used for the insurance calculation
- Date last verified
Sort the worksheet first by legal bank, then by depositor and ownership category. This prevents a common error: treating two differently named products as separate coverage groups even though the same bank holds both.

Using separate banks: what counts as genuinely separate
Separate coverage requires separate insured institutions. A new branch, a new account number or a different product at the same bank does not qualify. Before transferring money, compare the legal bank name and FDIC-insurance status on the account disclosures. Online-only access does not by itself make an institution a separate bank, and two websites can belong to one insured bank.

Operational details matter as much as the arithmetic. Keep transfer instructions, statements and confirmation numbers for each institution. Stagger transfers if your sending or receiving bank imposes daily limits, and confirm that funds have settled before closing an old account. A transfer that is still pending remains subject to the ownership and institution where the funds are actually held.
Ownership categories can create separate coverage—but only when rules are met
The FDIC recognizes several ownership categories, including single accounts, joint accounts, certain retirement accounts, employee-benefit plan accounts, trust accounts, business accounts and government accounts. Category treatment depends on the legal owner and the bank’s records. Merely adding a co-owner’s name, opening another account or using a different account title does not guarantee another $250,000 of insurance.
| Ownership category | What to verify | How to avoid a false assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Single accounts | The individual owner and all single-owner deposits at that bank | Combine every single-owner checking, savings, money market deposit and CD at the institution |
| Joint accounts | Eligible co-owners and the ownership records maintained by the bank | Do not treat each named person as an automatic additional limit without checking the joint-account rules |
| Certain retirement accounts | Whether the account and owner meet the category requirements | A retirement label alone does not establish coverage for every structure |
| Trust accounts | Owner, eligible beneficiaries, trust type and account records | Combine the owner’s qualifying revocable and irrevocable trust deposits at the same bank under the applicable trust rules |
| Business accounts | The legal business entity and its ownership | A trade name or extra account number does not necessarily create a separate insured owner |
| Government or employee-benefit accounts | The governing entity or plan and required documentation | Use category-specific analysis rather than applying the single-account rule |
The FDIC’s FAQs describe the categories and their qualification requirements. For complicated ownership, enter the actual legal arrangement in EDIE instead of estimating from the number of names on a signature card.
Trust deposits: the current aggregation and cap rules
Trust deposits require particular care. The FDIC combines informal revocable trusts, formal revocable trusts and irrevocable trusts owned by the same depositor at the same insured bank for coverage purposes. It calculates coverage separately for each owner.
Under the rule effective April 1, 2024, coverage is generally $250,000 per eligible beneficiary. When an owner has five or more eligible beneficiaries, the current maximum is $1,250,000 per owner at one bank. That is a cap for the owner at that bank, not a new limit for every account or every document. The FDIC explains the rule on its Trust Accounts page and in the EDIE rule-change guidance.

As an illustration, an owner with five eligible beneficiaries may have up to $1,250,000 of qualifying trust deposits covered at one bank under the current cap. A $1,400,000 trust balance would require further analysis and could leave an amount above the applicable maximum unless the funds are arranged under another valid coverage structure. Beneficiary eligibility, trust language and bank records determine the result; do not use the illustration as a substitute for the estimator or legal advice.
Worked allocation examples
$600,000 in one owner’s single accounts
Suppose one depositor has $600,000 in single-owner deposits. One workable distribution, assuming all three institutions are separately FDIC-insured and the balances remain in the single category, is:
| Insured bank | Single-category balance | Relationship to $250,000 limit |
|---|---|---|
| Bank A | $240,000 | Below the standard limit |
| Bank B | $240,000 | Below the standard limit |
| Bank C | $120,000 | Below the standard limit |
The same $600,000 split as $300,000 checking and $300,000 in a CD at Bank A would still be one $600,000 single-category total at that bank. Product labels do not create separate coverage.
Balances that rise because of interest
If a depositor places $249,500 at a bank and accrued interest pushes the balance above $250,000, the amount above the limit is exposed unless another rule applies. Leave a margin below the limit when a deposit is expected to earn interest, or schedule a review before interest posts.
Multiple owners
A joint, trust or business arrangement may have a different result from the single-owner example, but the names alone are not enough to calculate it. Verify the legal ownership, account title and bank records in EDIE. If the arrangement fails a category requirement, the balance may be treated differently from what the account title suggests.
Credit unions use NCUA share insurance, not FDIC insurance
A federally insured credit union is a related diversification option, but its protection is called NCUA share insurance. The National Credit Union Administration generally provides $250,000 of coverage for a member-owner’s single accounts, and accounts at different federally insured credit unions are insured separately. Branches of the same credit union, including an internet division, count as one institution.

Do not combine a credit union’s NCUA coverage with a bank’s FDIC coverage as though they were one program. List each federally insured credit union separately and use the NCUA’s Share Insurance Coverage information and Share Insurance FAQs. The NCUA also offers a Share Insurance Estimator. NCUA consumer guidance states: “No one has lost a single penny of insured deposits at a federally insured credit union.”

EDIE is most useful after you have gathered exact statements and ownership information. Enter each institution separately, identify the depositor or legal owner, select the ownership category and enter the balance, including accrued interest. Review the result for every bank rather than looking only at a combined household total.
Use EDIE whenever you have:
- More than one owner or beneficiary
- Joint accounts in addition to single accounts
- Revocable or irrevocable trusts
- Retirement, employee-benefit, business or government accounts
- Several brands, branches or online divisions that might share a legal bank
- Balances near a coverage limit or likely to grow above it
Save a copy of the result with the date and the account records used. If EDIE’s result differs from your worksheet, investigate the ownership or institution field rather than simply choosing the more favorable number.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Counting products instead of institutions
Mistake: Assuming a checking account, savings account and CD each receive $250,000.
Correction: Add all same-category deposits at the same legal bank, then move excess to another insured institution or establish a genuinely qualifying category.

A final checklist
- Have you identified the legal institution behind every bank name or website?
- Is each bank confirmed as FDIC-insured, or is the institution a federally insured credit union covered by NCUA?
- Have you grouped deposits by depositor and ownership category at each institution?
- Did you include accrued interest and pending deposits?
- Did you avoid treating branches, products or account numbers as separate coverage?
- For trusts, did you apply the April 1, 2024 rules and the $1,250,000 per-owner cap when five or more eligible beneficiaries are involved?
- Have you entered the actual arrangement into EDIE or the NCUA Share Insurance Estimator?
- Do your account titles and bank records match the ownership you intend?
