Use a repeatable six-step check before you believe or share an election claim: find the original source, confirm the date and context, inspect the evidence, corroborate it independently, authenticate any image or recording, and pause if the claim remains unresolved. For U.S. voting rules and results, the responsible state or local election office is the final authority because procedures vary by jurisdiction.
The goal is not to distrust every report. It is to match the evidence, timing and authority to the precise claim, especially when a post is designed to trigger an immediate reaction.

What a reliable verification process looks like
Political content can look authoritative while omitting its source, date, location or supporting evidence. A professional-looking graphic, a confident narrator or thousands of reposts do not establish that a claim is true. Verification means tracing the claim to its origin, testing the evidence and checking whether an appropriate independent authority supports it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The process below works for text posts, screenshots, news stories, videos, audio clips and messages. It is designed to distinguish a warning sign from proof. Suspicious language or a strange domain should prompt investigation; neither one, by itself, proves a claim is false.

- Find the original source. Identify the author, outlet, account or organization that first made the claim. Check that the page or account is genuine, and locate any quoted official, filing, order or dataset at its original publication.
- Check the date and context. Confirm when and where the material first appeared. Read beyond the headline and determine whether the headline accurately describes the underlying story.
- Inspect the evidence. Open cited documents and links. Ask whether they actually support the conclusion, whether material context is missing, and whether the author explains sources, funding or sponsorship.
- Corroborate independently. Look for confirmation from reputable reporting and primary sources that did not simply copy the same post. For voting rules, registration, polling places and official results, consult the election authority responsible for the relevant jurisdiction.
- Authenticate visual and audio material. Check whether an image, video or recording is old, edited, out of context or generated to imitate a real person. Reverse image search can locate earlier appearances, but the search result is a lead to investigate, not a final verdict.
- Pause before sharing. If you cannot trace or corroborate the claim, leave it unshared while it is unresolved. Reposting an allegation can give it reach and apparent credibility even when no reliable evidence supports it.
This order matters. Checking several reposts before identifying the original source can create the illusion of confirmation, because all of those accounts may be repeating one unsupported statement.
Make a short claim record
Before searching, write the claim in one neutral sentence and note the alleged person, place, date, action and number. This prevents a dramatic caption from quietly changing what you are checking. Keep the original link or screenshot, but separate what the post asserts from what you have actually verified. If the post makes several assertions, test them separately rather than treating one true detail as proof of the whole story.
Step 1: Trace the claim to its source
Identify who is making the assertion
Record the account name, author, organization, publication and any cited official. A screenshot may omit the URL or crop out an attribution, so search distinctive wording to find the full post or article. Check the account history, creation details and links to determine whether it is the real account or an impersonator. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency election toolkit and the Government of Canada guide both recommend checking whether a source exists and appears credible.

Compare the address, spelling and contact details with the organization’s known website. A suspicious or misspelled domain is a reason to verify through a site you reach independently, not conclusive evidence that the linked statement is false.
Locate primary material
If a post says an election office issued a notice, find that notice on the office’s own website. If it quotes a court filing, law or candidate statement, search the issuing court, legislature or campaign’s official channel. A claim that cannot produce the document it cites deserves more scrutiny than one that links directly to verifiable primary material.
When a quoted document is available, check that the version is complete and that the quoted passage has not been lifted from a different proceeding or year. A primary source establishes what an office, court or candidate published; it does not automatically prove the interpretation placed on it.
Step 2: Check the date, place and context
Old material is routinely recirculated during a new election. A photograph from a previous campaign, a video from another country or a genuine article about an earlier procedural change can be presented as current evidence. Note the publication date, the event date and the location separately; they are not interchangeable.

Context also includes the election involved and the stage of the process. A statement about a primary may not apply to a general election, and a rule for one county may not apply elsewhere. If a post does not identify a place or election, that omission is a gap to resolve before drawing a conclusion.
Step 3: Test the evidence rather than the presentation
Ask what would have to be true
Break a broad claim into checkable parts. For example, an assertion that ballots were discarded might imply a specific location, date, number, rule and official action. Verify each part instead of accepting a dramatic conclusion based on one photograph or anecdote.
Distinguish an allegation, an observation and a documented finding. Someone saying that a process looked unusual is not the same as an official record showing what occurred. A single incident, even if genuine, may not support a claim about an entire election.
Read the cited material
Open every important link and look for the passage, table or data point that supposedly proves the claim. Check whether the cited material is complete, current and applicable to the jurisdiction described. A document can be authentic yet irrelevant: a rule from one state does not establish the rule in another, and a preliminary report does not establish a certified outcome.
Check what the evidence does not show. A headline may mention an investigation without saying that wrongdoing was found; a chart may show a change without explaining whether it reflects additional ballots being reported. Missing context is a reason to keep investigating, not permission to fill the gap with assumptions.
Evaluate transparency
Reliable publishers identify authors, methods and sources, and disclose relevant sponsorship or conflicts. Anonymous screenshots, cropped documents and claims that demand trust without showing evidence are reasons to investigate further. They are not automatic proof of fabrication.
Presentation can manufacture confidence through dramatic music, urgent countdowns, bold typography or selective quotations. Set those cues aside and ask which exact, checkable fact is being asserted and where the supporting record can be inspected.

Search the key wording and the underlying event, not only the headline. Compare reputable news organizations with primary sources such as election-office notices, court records and statutory text. Determine whether reports are independent: ten accounts repeating one video are one lead, not ten confirmations.

Look for agreement on the underlying facts rather than identical phrasing. If every article cites the same unnamed post, the apparent volume is not independent corroboration. If reliable outlets report different details, preserve the disagreement and identify what each source can actually establish.
When sources disagree, compare them on four axes:
- Authority for this particular question: an election office controls current voting instructions; a commentator does not.
- Date and original context: a newer, location-specific notice may supersede an older general article.
- Evidence and provenance: prefer documents, data and attributable recordings over unsourced assertions.
- Independent corroboration: give more weight to sources that reached the conclusion separately.
For a U.S. question, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission voter FAQs directs readers to their state or local election office for registration and voting laws. Use national summaries to orient yourself, not as the final answer for a local deadline or polling place.
Step 5: Verify images, video and audio
Reverse-search an image, then verify the result
Use a reverse image search to find earlier copies and the oldest identifiable publication. Compare the original caption, date, location and photographer. A matching image may still have been edited, so inspect differences in cropping, shadows, signs and visible text. Search results can be incomplete or mislabelled; they identify possible origins rather than proving authenticity.
If no earlier result appears, that does not prove the image is new or genuine. Try distinctive signs, visible text or a cropped detail, then check the earliest credible publisher you can identify. Preserve the original post because later versions may change the caption or image.
Check video continuity and location
Look for cuts, mismatched weather or lighting, signs, landmarks and language. Search distinctive frames or phrases from the audio. Establish whether the clip shows the event claimed, happened at the claimed time and was recorded in the claimed place. A real recording can be misleading when a short segment removes what happened before or after it.
Do not infer the speaker’s meaning from a few seconds alone. Find a longer recording, transcript or contemporaneous report when possible. A clip can be authentic while its caption, translation or claimed location is wrong.
Consider synthetic media and impersonation
The 2025 Government of Canada guide warns that images can be edited or taken out of context and that AI voice-cloning can fabricate a candidate’s words. It also describes fake accounts and bots that amplify narratives or create an illusion of widespread support. Treat these as risks to check: confirm the recording through the candidate’s verified channel, a full event video or a reputable report, and do not declare a clip fake solely because it sounds unusual.

Likewise, an account with rapid, repetitive posting or a large apparent following may warrant closer inspection, but those characteristics alone do not establish automation. Verify the underlying claim through original documents and independent reporting rather than trying to decide authenticity from appearance alone.

Warning signs and the check that follows
| Warning sign | Why it deserves scrutiny | Action to take |
|---|---|---|
| Emotionally manipulative language or extreme certainty | Strong emotion can discourage questions and reward rapid sharing. | Rewrite the claim in neutral terms and look for the underlying document or event. |
| Sensational headline or clickbait | The headline may overstate what the article actually establishes. | Read the full item and compare its headline with the cited evidence. |
| Suspicious or misspelled domain | An address can imitate a legitimate outlet or official agency. | Type the known official address yourself and verify the notice there. |
| Unattributed screenshot | Cropping can hide the author, date, URL or surrounding context. | Search distinctive wording for the complete original post or document. |
| Image or clip with no date or location | Old or unrelated media can be presented as current evidence. | Reverse-search it and confirm the first publication, place and event. |
| Many accounts repeating identical wording | Coordinated or automated amplification can look like independent agreement. | Trace the earliest source and seek separate reporting or primary records. |
| Claims of secret knowledge or inevitable catastrophe | Pressure and exclusivity can substitute for evidence. | Ask what verifiable fact would distinguish the claim from speculation. |
None of these signals proves falsity. A legitimate warning can use urgent language, and a genuine official account can be unfamiliar. The signal tells you where to spend verification effort.
Where U.S. voters should verify practical information
Election administration is decentralized. Counties commonly run elections, but some states assign duties to cities or townships, and procedures can differ within a state. The office responsible for your address is the authoritative source for registration status, eligibility, polling location, early-voting dates, identification requirements, ballot-return methods and local notices.
- Identify the state, county, municipality or district involved, and the specific election date.
- Use the state election website or the local election office listed by the Election Assistance Commission.
- Follow the current instruction for your address and ballot type, including military, overseas, absentee or provisional voting where relevant.
- When a social post conflicts with the office’s current notice, contact the office using the phone number or email published on its official website.
Do not rely on a generic national summary for a local deadline, polling place or ballot-return method. Rules can change, and the correct answer depends on the jurisdiction and election involved. Save the page date or notice you used, since an older instruction may remain visible in a search result after a newer one is posted.

How to read changing election-night totals
Election-night figures are preliminary. Local jurisdictions transmit preliminary totals to state officials, and state websites may label those totals unofficial while eligible provisional, absentee, mail, military and overseas ballots remain to be counted. The canvass reconciles totals; certification establishes the final result under that state’s process. The Election Assistance Commission notes that final results can take several days or sometimes weeks, with timing and rules varying by state.
When two numbers differ, first identify their status: preliminary report, canvass, audit, certification or recount. They are different stages, not interchangeable claims. A changing preliminary total alone does not establish that counting is improper. A recount is a separate process from an audit, so read the state authority’s explanation of which procedure is underway.
Compare like with like: note the timestamp, reporting jurisdiction and ballot categories included in each figure. A later update may simply incorporate an additional batch or reconcile records. Do not describe an unofficial number as final, and do not treat the normal movement of a preliminary total as evidence of wrongdoing without specific, verified evidence.
Handling claims about hacked or exposed voter information
Claims that voter data was hacked often spread without a named system, affected jurisdiction or evidence of unauthorized access. A September 12, 2024 FBI and CISA public service announcement warned that false claims of hacked voter information may be intended to undermine trust in U.S. elections. Check whether the allegation identifies the responsible authority, a verifiable incident report and a specific database; then look for statements from the relevant election office and credible investigators. Do not treat a dramatic screenshot or a repeated rumor as proof that election systems or results were compromised.
Also separate a claim about voter-registration information from a claim about vote counting. They involve different records and authorities. Ask what system is allegedly affected, what evidence is available, and whether the responsible office has confirmed an incident before drawing a conclusion about an election.

What to do when a claim remains unresolved
Uncertainty is a valid conclusion. Save the link and note what is missing: an original source, a date, a document, a location or independent confirmation. Do not forward it while those gaps remain. CISA’s public-facing message is simple: Disinformation Stops with You. Pausing prevents an unverified allegation from gaining reach.
If you correct someone else, describe the verifiable record rather than attacking the person. Link to the current election-office notice, quote the relevant passage and explain the difference between preliminary and final information when applicable. Avoid repeating a sensational falsehood in a headline or image that could be seen without the correction.
A fast checklist before you share
- Can I name the original author or organization?
- Is the account, outlet or domain genuine?
- When and where did the material first appear?
- Does the headline or caption match the full content?
- What specific evidence supports the claim?
- Have I opened the cited document or source?
- Did genuinely independent reliable sources confirm it?
- For voting instructions, did I check the responsible state or local election office?
- For media, did I verify the original image, video or audio and its context?
- If I cannot answer these questions, can I leave the claim unshared?
Applying this checklist does not require rejecting every report or assuming every unofficial result signals wrongdoing. It means matching the evidence and the authority to the precise claim, then waiting when the facts are not yet established.

How do I know it is disinformation?
You usually cannot decide from tone or appearance alone. Trace the claim to its original source, check the date and location, read the supporting documents, compare genuinely independent reliable sources, and verify images or recordings in their original context. If important parts remain unverified, treat the claim as unresolved and do not share it.
How can I verify an election claim?
Write the claim in neutral, specific terms; identify its author; confirm the source is genuine; check when and where it originated; inspect the cited evidence; and seek independent corroboration. For U.S. registration, polling places, voting rules and official results, use the state or local election office responsible for the relevant jurisdiction.
Is this election news real if many accounts are sharing it?
Not necessarily. Reposts may all derive from one unsupported post, or automated and coordinated accounts may create an appearance of broad agreement. Find the earliest source and look for separate reporting, primary records or an official notice.
Why do election-night totals change?
Election-night figures are preliminary. Local jurisdictions transmit preliminary totals while eligible provisional, absentee, mail, military and overseas ballots may still be counted. Canvassing reconciles totals and certification establishes the final result under state-specific rules; final results can take several days or sometimes weeks.
Where should I check my polling place or voting deadline?
Check the election office responsible for your address through your state election website or the local office identified by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Do not use a generic national summary as the final authority because administration and deadlines vary by state and sometimes within a state.
Does a strange-looking video or voice recording prove it is AI-generated?
No. Edited, old, out-of-context or AI-generated media are all possibilities, but appearance alone is not proof. Search for earlier versions, check continuity, date, place and original publisher, and confirm the words through a verified channel, full event recording or reputable report.
The Bottom Line
Verify before amplifying: trace the original source, check time and context, test the evidence, corroborate independently, authenticate media and use the responsible state or local election office for U.S. voting facts. Preliminary totals can change as counting and canvassing continue. When the record is incomplete, leaving the claim unshared is the most reliable next step.
