How to Spot Job Scams and Verify a Recruiter or Job Posting

If a recruiter or job offer asks for money, a check deposit, or sensitive identity details before you can independently confirm the employer and role, stop. Warning signs justify a pause; independent verification is stronger than a convincing message, website, interview invitation, or offer letter. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) puts the limit plainly: “There’s no sure-fire way to detect a job scam.”

Use the employer’s official website and a contact method you find yourself, then confirm that the vacancy and recruiter are real. Do not rely on links, phone numbers, email addresses, logos, or documents supplied only by the person who contacted you.

Is this recruiter real?

Assume an unexpected approach is unverified until you check it through a separate channel. A scammer can copy a company’s name, logo, job description, interview format, and offer-letter design. Those details show only that someone put effort into appearing legitimate.

1. Pause the conversation

Do not click a link, download an attachment, reply with personal details, or move to another messaging app while you are still deciding whether the contact is genuine. For an unexpected text, WhatsApp message, or Telegram message about generic remote work, the safest first action is no engagement. An April 2026 FTC alert describes a scheme that asks recipients to reply “YES” or “INTERESTED” to start a conversation; replying confirms that your number is active and opens the scammer’s script.

2. Find the employer yourself

Type the company’s known web address into your browser or use a search engine; do not use a URL in the message. Open the company’s careers or jobs page and compare:

  • the exact job title and description;
  • the location or permitted work region;
  • the department or hiring team;
  • the application route and any requisition number; and
  • the name of the person shown as a contact.

The FTC explains how scammers hijack real advertisements and alter old postings in “Scammers are hijacking job ads. Here’s how to spot the fakes”. A matching title on a job board is therefore not enough. If the role is absent from the official careers page, treat that discrepancy as a stop signal and ask the employer about it before proceeding.

3. Confirm the person through an independently sourced channel

Use a phone number or email address listed on the employer’s official site, not one copied from the recruiter’s signature or profile. Ask the company’s human-resources or recruiting team whether the named person works there, represents the company, and is assigned to the vacancy. Do not ask the recruiter to supply the “right” number for you to call; that leaves the scammer in control of both sides of the check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A corporate email domain that resembles the company’s domain can be useful evidence, but it is not proof. Look closely for misspellings, extra words, free-mail accounts, or look-alike domains. Even a compromised corporate account can be misused, so confirmation by the employer’s known contact route remains stronger.

4. Check for corroborating complaints without treating them as proof

Search the company and recruiter name with terms such as scam, fraud, and complaint. Use results to generate questions, not to make the entire decision. The FTC warns that reviews, testimonials, and glowing success stories can be fake or misleading. A clean search does not authenticate a contact, and a complaint may concern a different person or a legitimate dispute.

Is this job posting legitimate?

Verify the opening at the source before you apply or send documents. The FTC’s guidance in “How to spot the latest job scams” recommends navigating to the employer’s site independently and checking its careers page.

  1. Record what you received. Save the message, sender address, profile URL, job-board page, attached description, and any requisition number. Screenshots preserve evidence if the page changes.
  2. Open the employer’s site in a new session. Enter the address yourself. Avoid sponsored results and links that redirect through unfamiliar domains.
  3. Locate the vacancy. Compare title, duties, location, pay range if stated, employment status, and application instructions. A real company name or copied wording does not establish that this particular opening is active.
  4. Apply only through the verified route. If the official page directs applicants to a recognized applicant-tracking system, follow that route from the company page rather than from the recruiter’s link.
  5. Ask about discrepancies. If the role is missing, closed, listed in another location, or has different duties, contact the employer through its published phone number or contact form. Do not continue merely because the recruiter says the posting is confidential or “about to be uploaded.”

Scammers can copy an authentic employer’s name and modify an old listing. The FTC’s August 2023 alert about impersonation on LinkedIn and other job platforms details how polished profiles and documents can be manufactured; read it at the FTC’s impersonation warning.

Warning signs: look for a pattern, not one magic clue

Any one item below can occur in a legitimate hiring process. Several together, especially when paired with a request for money or sensitive information, warrant stopping and independently verifying the opportunity.

Pattern Why it deserves scrutiny What to do
Unsolicited contact about generic remote work Mass messages can be sent without a real vacancy or employer relationship. Do not reply or click. Find the employer and role independently.
Personal email account or look-alike domain It is harder to connect the sender to the claimed employer. Check the company’s published domain, then confirm the person by official contact information.
Pressure to decide immediately Urgency prevents normal checks and encourages emotional decisions. Tell the sender you will verify through the company. A legitimate employer can tolerate that pause.
Interview only by text or chat A scripted chat avoids the normal recruiting process and makes impersonation easy. Ask for a standard interview with verifiable staff and confirm the vacancy first.
Vague duties or unusually high pay for little work The promise may be designed to attract deposits or personal data rather than assess skills. Request a specific job description, reporting line, location, and hiring steps; verify each through the employer.
Request for Social Security number, driver’s-license details, or bank data before a credible process Those details can enable identity theft or account fraud. Do not provide them until the employer, role, and hiring stage are independently credible.
Fee for training, equipment, background checks, or placement Paying to obtain employment is an established scam pattern. Stop. Legitimate placement firms and headhunters typically charge the hiring company, not the applicant.
Check to deposit and money to forward A bank may make funds appear available before discovering the check is fraudulent. Do not deposit or forward any money. Contact your bank if you already did.

Personal email, a polished website, or an unsolicited approach is not conclusive by itself. Evaluate the combination of behavior, verify the role, and treat money demands as a decisive reason to stop.

How can I verify a job offer before sharing information?

A credible hiring sequence normally lets you understand the work, meet or speak with identifiable representatives, and receive verifiable terms before routine onboarding paperwork. Requests for sensitive data before an interview or before your job questions are answered are out of sequence.

Use this evidence hierarchy

Stronger evidence Weaker evidence
Active listing reached through the employer’s own careers page Link supplied in an email, text, or social-media message
Recruiter confirmed by a phone number or email found independently on the employer’s site Recruiter profile, logo, letterhead, or caller ID alone
Consistent title, location, duties, and application route across official channels Copied job-board wording or a polished PDF offer letter
Interview and offer details that can be confirmed by the employer’s HR team Chat-only interview, pressure, secrecy, or a demand to use a chosen payment route

Verify the offer letter

  1. Compare the legal employer name and address with the company’s official site.
  2. Check that the job title, manager, work location, pay, start date, and conditions match the verified vacancy.
  3. Call or email the employer using independently found contact information and ask whether the offer was issued.
  4. Do not use the contact details printed in the letter for the confirmation call.
  5. Do not send identity or banking documents merely because the letter looks formal. Complete them only through a verified onboarding system after the employer confirms the offer.

An offer letter can be forged, and a real company can be impersonated. The document becomes meaningful only after the employer confirms it through a separate channel.

Should I pay for equipment before I start?

No. Do not pay an alleged employer, recruiter, vendor, or courier to secure a job, receive equipment, unlock training, or release earnings. Upfront invoices and “reimbursement” arrangements are common variations of the same fraud.

The fake-check equipment scheme

A scammer may send a check for a computer or supplies, instruct you to deposit it, keep part of the money, and send the remainder to a vendor or recruiter. Your bank can show a temporary credit before the check is determined to be counterfeit. If you forward money, you can be responsible for the loss even though the check initially appeared to clear. Do not deposit the check or transfer funds; contact your bank’s fraud department if you already deposited it.

Legitimate recruiting fees

The FTC says legitimate placement firms and headhunters typically charge the company seeking candidates, not prospective employees. A fee demanded from you to obtain or retain a job is a serious warning sign, whether it is labeled a registration fee, certification fee, equipment deposit, or background-check charge.

Common job-scam patterns and how they work

Company impersonation

The message uses a well-known company’s name, familiar branding, a convincing job platform profile, and a professional-looking interview or offer. The scammer may even copy a current vacancy. Verify the role and representative through the employer’s own site; visual polish is not authentication.

Identity harvesting

“Onboarding paperwork” requests a Social Security number, driver’s-license image, date of birth, or bank account before a real interview or before the employer can explain the work. Pause and contact the company through its published channel. Share only what a verified employer requests at an appropriate onboarding stage, and use a secure, official portal rather than an unverified attachment or chat.

Task scams

A text or message promises quick money for rating products, liking content, or completing simple online tasks. After showing invented earnings, the operator requires you to deposit your own money to unlock additional tasks or withdraw the balance. The FTC’s April 2026 alert says not to pay to get paid. Treat any requirement to fund an account, wallet, or task level as a stop signal.

Recruiter-fee and training schemes

The contact claims that a payment is needed for placement, mandatory training, software, or certification. A legitimate employer may explain costs associated with a job, but a demand that you pay the recruiter or a specified payment recipient before employment is established is not a normal way to verify a vacancy. End the conversation and confirm the opportunity independently.

What should I do with a suspicious job text?

The FTC’s November 2024 alert, “That random text offering you a job? It’s probably a scam,” recommends not responding to unexpected offers. Do not click links, open attachments, or call numbers in the message. Use your phone’s junk-reporting function or forward the text to 7726 (SPAM). Then block the sender.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are interested in a company named in the text, start over from the company’s official website and search its careers page. Never “verify” the text by replying to it. The same caution applies to WhatsApp, Telegram, and social-media direct messages.

How to protect your identity and banking information

  • Social Security number: Do not send it to an unverified recruiter or before the employer and hiring process are credible.
  • Driver’s-license information: Do not email a scan or upload it to a link supplied only by the contact.
  • Bank details: Do not provide account and routing numbers for direct deposit before a real interview, verified offer, and confirmed onboarding process.
  • Payment credentials: Never share one-time passcodes, debit-card numbers, passwords, or access to a payment wallet to “receive” wages.
  • Documents and devices: Keep copies of what you submit, and do not install remote-access software at a recruiter’s request unless your verified employer’s IT team confirms the process through an official channel.

When a company has been independently verified, ask how it collects onboarding data, who can access it, and when it is required. A credible request should fit the stage of hiring and use a secure company-controlled system.

What if I already sent money or personal information?

  1. Stop contact and payments. Do not send more money to recover a supposed balance or “fix” the account.
  2. Call the payment company immediately. Tell the bank, card issuer, wire service, payment app, or cryptocurrency service that you were defrauded and ask whether the transaction can be reversed or frozen. Keep the transaction number and the name of the recipient.
  3. Secure accounts. Change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and monitor bank and credit accounts. If you shared banking credentials, ask the bank whether the account or account numbers should be replaced.
  4. Protect your identity. If you provided a Social Security number or identity document, use IdentityTheft.gov for the federal recovery steps and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze with the nationwide credit bureaus.
  5. Preserve evidence. Keep messages, headers, phone numbers, payment receipts, websites, and files. Do not edit screenshots.
  6. Report the fraud. File a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For a suspicious text, also forward it to 7726 or use the phone’s junk-reporting feature.

Fast action cannot guarantee recovery, but payment providers have the best chance of stopping a transfer when notified promptly.

A practical verification checklist

Before you apply, interview, or submit onboarding information, answer each question independently:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Did I find the employer’s website without using the recruiter’s link?
  • Is the job listed on the employer’s careers page with matching details?
  • Did the employer confirm that the named recruiter represents it?
  • Can I explain the duties, manager, location, pay, and hiring stages?
  • Have I had a credible interview rather than only scripted chat?
  • Has anyone asked me to pay, deposit a check, buy equipment through a specified vendor, or forward money?
  • Has anyone requested my Social Security number, driver’s-license details, bank information, passwords, or one-time code too early?
  • Have I checked complaints while remembering that both reviews and accusations can be misleading?

If you cannot answer the first three questions, do not advance to payment or sensitive-data steps. If the answer to the money question is yes, stop regardless of how professional the opportunity looks.

When a warning sign is ambiguous

Some legitimate employers use outside recruiters, personal scheduling tools, text messages, remote interviews, or automated applicant systems. Those practices do not prove fraud, but they also do not excuse skipping verification. Ask for the employer’s legal name, the vacancy’s official location, the recruiter’s role, and the next hiring step. Then confirm each item using contact information you obtained independently.

Conversely, the absence of obvious warning signs does not prove safety. The FTC’s July 2024 guidance, “Looking for a job? Spot the scams,” emphasizes checking the opportunity before sharing information or money. Treat verification as a process, not a one-time impression.

Where to report and get official guidance

Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov for suspected job fraud. The FTC’s consumer guidance on current schemes is available in its latest job-scam overview and its January 2023 explanation, “Taking the ‘ploy’ out of employment scams.” These resources cannot certify a particular recruiter, so the decisive check remains direct confirmation through the employer’s independently sourced channels.
