Use a review as evidence, not as a verdict. To judge a product recommendation on social media, first identify whether you are seeing a customer review, a creator’s testimonial, or advertising that resembles editorial content. Then check whether the person claims first-hand experience, whether a financial or other material connection is disclosed, and whether that disclosure is easy to notice in the format you are viewing. Finally, corroborate important claims before spending money.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect on October 21, 2024. It prohibits specified deceptive conduct involving fake reviews, testimonials, undisclosed insider reviews, review suppression, fake social-media influence indicators and purportedly independent company-controlled review sites. It does not authenticate every review shown by a retailer or social platform, and a suspicious pattern is a reason to investigate—not proof that a particular post is fake.

Start by identifying what kind of content you are reading
The same enthusiastic sentence can have different implications depending on where and how it appears. FTC staff distinguishes a consumer review from a testimonial. A consumer review is an evaluation submitted to a site or platform that receives and displays evaluations. A testimonial is an advertising message that is likely to be understood as reflecting a consumer’s experience. An incentivized consumer review may also function as a testimonial.
Customer review on a review venue
This is feedback posted in a place designed to collect evaluations. The important questions are whether the reviewer exists, used or experienced the product or business, and accurately describes that experience. A favorable rating is not automatically false, and an awkward writing style is not proof of fabrication.

Creator endorsement or influencer post
A hired creator’s post promoting a product is treated as a testimonial rather than an ordinary consumer review. The conversational tone, personal story or “unboxing” format does not change its promotional function. A business can face liability in specified circumstances when it knew or should have known that an influencer misrepresented using or experiencing the product.
Promotional content that looks editorial
A short video, livestream, image caption or “best products” list can be advertising even when it does not look like a conventional advertisement. Judge the relationship and the disclosure, not the tone. A friendly recommendation can still be paid promotion.
What the US rule actually covers
The FTC rule is a defined set of prohibitions, not a promise that every displayed review has been independently checked. It addresses conduct such as:
- Selling or buying fake consumer reviews or testimonials.
- Buying reviews on the condition that they express a particular positive or negative sentiment.
- Certain undisclosed insider reviews, including reviews from people whose relationship with a business would matter to readers.
- Falsely presenting a company-controlled review site as independent.
- Certain conduct that suppresses reviews in a deceptive way.
- Selling or buying fake indicators of social-media influence.
The rule focuses on material misrepresentations—for example, falsely claiming that a reviewer exists, used the product or business, or had a particular experience. It does not mean that every exaggerated opinion, unusual phrase or disappointing product account automatically violates the rule. The FTC also says that merely hosting reviews does not create a general obligation for a platform to investigate every one, although businesses that create, purchase or disseminate false reviews or testimonials may be covered by the specified prohibitions.
A step-by-step check before you trust a recommendation
1. Locate the recommendation in its original context
Open the full post, caption, image, video or livestream rather than relying on a clipped screenshot or a repost. Note whether it appears on a review venue, a creator’s account, a brand account or a page presenting itself as independent. Context helps you decide whether the message is a review, a testimonial or another form of promotion.

2. Separate a first-hand claim from a general opinion
Look for a specific account of use: what was tried, for how long, under what conditions and with what result. Specificity does not prove honesty, but it gives you a claim that can be checked. Be cautious when a post presents certainty about performance without saying that the person used the product, or when the wording implies experience that the surrounding content does not support.
The legal concern is not simply that an opinion is enthusiastic. The FTC rule targets material misrepresentations about the reviewer’s existence, use or experience, and the experience itself. A positive opinion by itself is not evidence that a review is false.

3. Ask what connection could affect the recommendation
Consider whether the person received money, free or discounted products, commissions, employment, a family benefit, equity, an ongoing brand relationship or another incentive. The relevant question is whether a reasonable audience would want to know about the connection when evaluating the recommendation.
A product can be supplied for free even when no cash changes hands. A creator can have a continuing relationship with a company even when the individual post is not labeled “paid.” Do not infer the absence of a relationship solely from a casual tone.
4. Find the disclosure and read it in context
Compensated promoters should disclose material connections. Look for plain language near the recommendation, such as a clear statement that the post is sponsored, paid, or based on a product supplied by the company. A vague phrase, an unexplained abbreviation or a disclosure hidden among unrelated tags may not tell you what relationship exists.
Read the words, not just the presence of a badge. A disclosure should make sense in the same format as the endorsement and be understandable to the intended audience. If you have to search a profile, expand a caption repeatedly or pause a fast-moving video to discover the relationship, treat the recommendation as less transparent.

5. Test whether the disclosure is actually noticeable
FTC staff cautions that built-in platform tools are not automatically sufficient. In its November 2024 FAQ, the staff wrote: “Some of these tools may generate inadequate disclosures that are fleeting, too hard to read because of poor contrast or small size, or placed in locations too easy to miss.” The statement concerns whether a platform tool necessarily makes a disclosure clear and conspicuous; it is not a blanket finding that every platform label fails.
For a story or image, check whether the label remains on screen long enough and has enough contrast and size to be read. For a video, watch the beginning, middle and end for a disclosure rather than assuming a momentary overlay communicates the relationship. For a livestream, consider whether a disclosure appears where viewers can notice it after joining late. A label that is technically present but practically unreadable gives you little useful information.
6. Compare the claim with independent information
For a costly purchase, look for information from sources that do not appear to share the same promotion. Compare the product’s stated specifications, limitations, return terms and typical use cases. Independent information is a cautious consumer practice, not a legally dispositive test endorsed by the FTC.
Check whether the post’s claims are internally consistent. Does the caption say the product was used for months while the video describes opening it that day? Does a “customer” account link directly to a paid campaign? An inconsistency warrants more checking, but it does not by itself establish that the post is fabricated.

Use the strength of the evidence to set a spending limit. A clearly disclosed, specific account may be one input among several. A vague recommendation with an unclear relationship should not be the sole reason for a large purchase, subscription or nonrefundable payment. Pause, compare alternatives and verify the cancellation or return terms before committing money.

How to judge disclosure quality by format

Patterns that deserve checking—but do not prove a fake review
Readers often notice bursts of similar comments, repeated phrases, new accounts, unusually high ratings or a creator who seems to praise everything. Those observations can justify a closer look, especially when combined with an unclear relationship or unsupported first-hand claim. However, the primary FTC materials do not establish any of those signals as a validated forensic test.
- Repeated wording: Similar language may reflect a campaign, a shared talking point or ordinary imitation. It is not conclusive by itself.
- A new account: A recently created account may belong to a genuine first-time buyer or a promotional account. Check the context and disclosure.
- A sudden rating spike: A burst can be legitimate after a launch or promotion. Look for evidence of incentives, false experience claims or other specified conduct rather than relying on timing alone.
- Perfectly positive sentiment: Enthusiasm is not proof of falsity. The relevant issue is whether material facts about the reviewer, use or experience are misrepresented.
- Odd grammar or polished writing: Writing style can reflect translation, editing or a template. It cannot establish that a person or experience is fictional.
Use these patterns to decide where to spend your verification effort, not to accuse a particular person or business without evidence.

This framework does not produce a mathematical authenticity score. It keeps the decision tied to information you can actually inspect.
How sponsorship can affect your budget
Sponsored recommendations matter to personal finance because the incentive can change how a product is presented. A creator may emphasize benefits that generate a commission while giving less attention to recurring fees, accessories, replacement costs, cancellation rules or limits on a free trial. A disclosure does not make the product bad; it gives you context for weighing the claim.
Before a high-cost purchase
- Write down the total first-year cost, including recurring charges and required add-ons.
- Check the seller’s return, cancellation and warranty terms directly rather than relying on a creator’s summary.
- Compare the recommendation with at least one source that is not part of the same promotion.
- Save the offer terms and the post date if a discount or limited-time claim influences your decision.
Before a subscription or trial
- Find the renewal price and billing interval.
- Confirm how cancellation works and whether a trial converts automatically.
- Do not assume a creator’s statement that something is “free” covers shipping, minimum commitments or later charges.
These checks protect your budget even when the recommendation is genuine. They also prevent a transparent sponsorship from becoming an unexamined spending decision.

What to do when a post seems deceptive
Preserve the information you saw
Save the post URL, screenshots, caption, disclosure and date if you may need to compare the content later. A disappearing story or edited caption can make the original claim difficult to evaluate after the fact. Keep records for your own purchase decision; do not publish private personal information about the reviewer.
Seek clarification and corroboration
Look for the full context, including edits, pinned comments and the creator’s stated relationship with the brand. Compare independent information about the product and business. If the person claims first-hand use, ask whether the details are consistent with the product’s availability and the timeline described.
Use the appropriate reporting channel
Social platforms and sellers have their own reporting options, but the current workflow and labels vary by service. Follow the reporting instructions available in the platform or marketplace you are using, and describe the specific conduct you observed rather than asserting that every similar review is fake. For US consumers, the FTC’s consumer-protection resources explain how to submit information about deceptive practices; the applicable rule is not a certification system for individual reviews.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a platform badge as proof: A built-in paid-partnership or similar tool may be hard to notice, so inspect the content itself.
- Assuming no label means no relationship: An absent or unclear disclosure is a reason to investigate, not proof that sponsorship exists.
- Calling every positive review fake: The rule concerns specified material misrepresentations and deceptive conduct, not enthusiasm alone.
- Using one visual or linguistic clue as a verdict: No validated checklist from the reviewed FTC materials proves coordinated manipulation.
- Confusing hosting with verification: A site that displays reviews has not necessarily authenticated each one.
- Ignoring the purchase terms: Even an honest recommendation can leave out renewal prices, return limits or other costs that matter to your budget.
What the FTC rule does—and does not—tell you
The rule gives consumers a useful legal lens: ask whether a reviewer exists, used or experienced the product or business, and truthfully describes that experience; ask whether an insider relationship or incentive is disclosed; and be alert to businesses buying, selling or distributing deceptive reviews, testimonials or fake influence indicators. It does not give consumers a guaranteed authenticity score, establish the laws of other countries, or turn an unusual writing pattern into proof.
For US shopping decisions, the most reliable habit is layered verification. Identify the content type, examine the first-hand claim, find and evaluate the relationship disclosure, judge whether the disclosure is visible in the actual format, and corroborate important claims before spending. If the evidence remains unclear, reduce the financial commitment or wait rather than treating a persuasive post as conclusive proof.
