There is no reliable visual trick that proves a peptide is genuine. The strongest pre-purchase check combines the seller’s claims, a lot-specific certificate of analysis (COA) or laboratory report, independently verifiable testing, and a clear understanding of what each test does—and does not—show. A convincing label or a high HPLC purity number is not proof that the vial contains the stated amount, came from the tested batch, is sterile, or is suitable for people.
Use the process below to decide whether the evidence is strong enough to proceed. If the product is intended for your own treatment, stop treating research-chemical paperwork as a substitute for an approved medicine, licensed clinician, and lawful pharmacy.

What “real” means in practice
Buyers often use “real” to mean several different things at once. Separate those questions before judging a listing:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identity: Is the material actually the peptide named on the label?
- Amount: How much peptide is present by mass, after accounting for water, counterions, salts, and other material?
- Purity: What proportion of the detected chromatographic signal is attributed to the target peak under the stated method?
- Provenance: Did the vial offered to you come from the same lot and production sample represented by the report?
- Quality and safety: Were sterility, endotoxins, stability, contaminants, and handling controls evaluated?
- Legal and intended use: Is the seller presenting the product as a research material, or making claims that indicate intended human treatment?
A product can satisfy one of these questions and fail another. For example, a genuine report may identify a peptide in a sample while saying nothing about the vial you receive. A sample can show high relative HPLC purity while containing less peptide by mass than the label implies. A clean-looking COA can also omit sterility or endotoxin testing entirely.

Read the seller’s entire presentation, not just the disclaimer
The product page, advertising, checkout flow, emails, testimonials, and social-media claims all help show how a seller intends the product to be used. A small “research use only” statement does not erase prominent claims about human effects.
Claims that indicate intended human use
Pause when a listing says or strongly implies that a peptide will treat a condition, cause weight loss, change body composition, improve sexual function, alter hormones, replace a prescription, or produce rapid results in people. Claims framed as bodybuilding, anti-aging, recovery, or “wellness” promises can still communicate an intended human effect.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s consumer guidance identifies several warning signs for fraudulent health products, including promises to substitute for or mimic prescription drugs, unproven disease claims, suspicious sales channels, and unusually rapid-result promises. These signs are reasons to investigate further, not forensic proof that a particular vial is counterfeit.

In an August 24, 2026 warning letter to Peak Performance Peptides, FDA said its review of the company’s website in July 2026 found evidence that products were intended as drugs for human use despite “research use only” and “not for human consumption” statements. The letter named “Bac water,” “GLP-3R” (retatrutide), semaglutide, SS-31, PT-141, and tesamorelin, and identified them as unapproved new drugs based on the intended uses and claims FDA reviewed.
FDA used similar reasoning in an August 24, 2026 letter to NuScience Peptides. Products named included semaglutide, tirzepatide, retatrutide, survodutide, mazdutide, PT-141, tesamorelin, and bacteriostatic water. These are firm-specific enforcement examples, not a universal finding about every peptide seller or every chemical labeled for research.
FDA Director Tina Smith, M.S., Captain, U.S. Public Health Service, wrote in the Peak Performance letter: Despite statements on your product labeling marketing your products for ‘research use only’ and ‘not for human consumption,’ evidence obtained from your website establishes that your products are intended to be drugs for human use.
The practical lesson is to evaluate the whole presentation rather than treating a disclaimer as approval, safety evidence, or a guarantee of lawful status.

Demand lot-linked documentation before paying
Do not wait until a package arrives to ask what was tested. Request the documentation while you can still walk away without a financial loss.
COA versus the laboratory’s original report
A supplier-issued COA usually summarizes conclusions for a sample. A laboratory’s own test report may contain more detail about the sample received, methods, instruments, dates, and results. Neither document automatically proves that your vial is represented. The key issue is provenance: the tested sample must be tied to the exact lot being offered.
Minimum fields to check
- The exact substance name, including any stated salt or counterion form.
- A unique lot, batch, or manufacturing identifier.
- The report date and, where provided, sample-receipt date.
- The laboratory’s legal name and contact details.
- Each test performed, the method or standard used, and the result.
- Units and acceptance criteria, not just a large “pass” or “99%” headline.
- A way to verify the report with the laboratory independently of the seller.
The lot number on the report should match the lot number printed on the offered vial, outer packaging, and invoice. A report for a different lot is not evidence for the lot you are buying. If the seller says lots are “equivalent,” ask for a report covering the actual lot rather than accepting a general product page.
Verify without relying on a screenshot
Contact the named laboratory through contact information you obtain independently, not only through a link or phone number supplied in a vendor image. Ask whether the report number, sample identifier, date, and listed tests are consistent with the laboratory’s records. A laboratory may limit what it can disclose, but an inability to confirm a report should lower your confidence.
Look for signs that a document has been reused: identical report numbers across different lots, unchanged dates for supposedly new batches, inconsistent fonts or units, missing pages, or a logo that appears without a laboratory address. These observations justify pausing; they do not by themselves prove fraud.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Document feature | What it can support | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Exact lot identifier matching the offered product | That the document is at least linked to the same stated batch | That the vial was not relabeled, mixed, or substituted after testing |
| Named, independently verifiable laboratory | That a laboratory can be contacted about the report | That every result on a seller-created summary is accurate |
| Identity test with method and result | Evidence about the substance in the tested sample | Identity of an untested vial or freedom from all contaminants |
| HPLC purity percentage | Relative chromatographic purity under the stated method | Peptide mass, sterility, endotoxin status, stability, or clinical safety |
| Separate peptide-content assay | Quantitative information about peptide amount by mass, if method and units are clear | That the measured amount applies to another lot |
Understand what the numbers actually measure
HPLC purity is not peptide content by mass
Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) commonly reports purity as the target peak’s area relative to the chromatographic signal detected under that method. A result such as 98% or 99% therefore describes a relative signal distribution, not automatically 98 or 99 milligrams of peptide in a 100-milligram vial.

The mass of peptide can be affected by water, counterions, residual salts, solvents, and other non-peptide material. A vial can therefore have a high relative HPLC purity while containing less peptide than its nominal fill weight suggests. To answer the amount question, look for a separate quantitative content or assay result, stated in clear units and tied to the same lot.
Identity tests answer a narrower question
Mass spectrometry, sequencing, chromatographic retention time, or another identity method can provide evidence that a tested sample is consistent with the named peptide. Read the method and acceptance criteria rather than treating the word “identified” as a complete quality verdict. Identity does not by itself quantify the fill, detect every impurity, or establish sterility.
Tests that are absent cannot be inferred
A COA establishes only the properties it reports. If there is no sterility test, do not describe the product as sterile. If no endotoxin method and result are listed, do not infer low endotoxin. If no stability program or storage data are supplied, do not assume the labeled shelf life. A strong purity result cannot answer questions about manufacturing controls, microbial contamination, pyrogens, degradation over time, or suitability for injection.
Be especially cautious with language such as “pharmaceutical grade,” “clinical grade,” or “sterile filtered” when the document does not identify the governing standard, test method, laboratory, and lot. Marketing adjectives are not substitutes for measured results.
What “third-party tested” really means
“Third-party tested” means an outside laboratory, rather than the seller alone, performed or reported a test. It does not specify the laboratory’s accreditation, independence, method quality, sample chain of custody, or test scope. Ask four follow-up questions:
- Who performed the test? Is the laboratory named, contactable, and plausibly equipped for peptide analysis?
- What sample did it receive? Is the sample identifier linked to the lot and quantity being offered?
- Which methods were used? Does the report distinguish identity, purity, content, water, residual solvents, microbial tests, endotoxins, and stability?
- Can the report be verified? Can the laboratory confirm the report number or sample record independently?
An outside laboratory can produce a genuine report on a sample supplied by a seller while the buyer later receives a different sample. Third-party involvement improves evidence quality only when provenance and scope are clear.

A step-by-step pre-purchase check
- Define your decision. Write down whether you are checking identity, amount, contamination, legal status, or human safety. One document rarely answers all five.
- Capture the complete listing. Save the product name, seller claims, intended-use language, lot number, stated fill amount, storage instructions, and any promises about effects before the page changes.
- Screen for human-use claims. Treat disease-treatment, weight-loss, bodybuilding, hormone, sexual-function, or rapid-result claims as a major warning sign. A research disclaimer does not neutralize them.
- Request the lot-specific report. Do this before payment. Reject a generic catalog COA that lacks a unique identifier for the offered batch.
- Match every identifier. Compare the report, vial, packaging, invoice, and shipping paperwork. Resolve differences in spelling, salt form, lot code, or stated quantity in writing.
- Map each claim to a test. Mark whether the report addresses identity, HPLC purity, peptide content by mass, water or residual solvents, sterility, endotoxins, and stability. Mark “not reported” where it does not.
- Read the method and units. A headline percentage without method, units, chromatogram or acceptance criteria is weak evidence. Check whether “purity” is relative peak area rather than mass fraction.
- Verify the laboratory. Use independently obtained laboratory contact details to ask about the report number, sample identifier, and date.
- Assess the seller’s behavior. Pressure to buy immediately, refusal to answer basic documentation questions, testimonials replacing data, or repeated reports across lots should reduce confidence.
- Make a stop-or-proceed decision. If provenance, identity, amount, or intended-use legality remains unresolved, do not treat the product as authenticated. For personal treatment, use a licensed clinician and lawful pharmacy route instead.
How to compare two sellers or two reports
Do not rank sellers by the largest purity number or the most polished certificate. Compare the evidence dimensions that affect your actual question.
| Comparison axis | Stronger evidence | Weak or unresolved evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Lot linkage | Report, vial, and invoice carry the same unique lot code | Generic report, missing code, or “representative” sample |
| Laboratory verification | Named laboratory confirms report details independently | Only a vendor screenshot or unverifiable PDF |
| Identity | Named identity method with result and acceptance criteria | “Verified” or “authentic” with no method |
| Purity | Method, chromatogram or data summary, units, and stated limitations | Single percentage presented as a complete quality score |
| Peptide amount | Separate content assay by mass for the same lot | Fill weight treated as peptide amount |
| Safety-related properties | Specific sterility, endotoxin, residual-solvent, and stability results where relevant | Claims of “sterile,” “safe,” or “pharmaceutical” without tests |
| Intended use | Research description that does not promise human effects | Human-treatment claims paired with a research-only disclaimer |
This framework compares documentation quality, not named vendors. The available evidence does not establish a reliable comparative testing dataset or a validated consumer visual-authentication method.
Warning signs and the appropriate response
- Mismatched lot numbers: Ask for a corrected, lot-specific report. If the seller cannot provide one, stop.
- Reused or undated reports: Request the laboratory’s original report and sample date. Repetition across supposedly different batches is a reason to pause.
- Purity-only marketing: Ask separately about identity and peptide content by mass. Do not convert a purity percentage into milligrams.
- Unanswered scope questions: If sterility, endotoxins, stability, or storage are important to your use and the report omits them, regard those properties as unknown.
- Pressure, testimonials, or dramatic promises: Leave rather than allowing urgency to replace evidence.
- Conflicting product language: Human-effect claims can matter more than a disclaimer when considering regulatory and safety risk.
None of these signs alone proves that a particular vial is counterfeit. They indicate that the available evidence is insufficient for a confident purchase.
What a COA cannot tell you about safety
A COA is not a clinical study, manufacturing inspection, sterility certificate unless it specifically reports sterility testing, or approval for human use. It normally cannot establish dose, effectiveness, interactions, contraindications, or whether a product is appropriate for a particular person. It also does not prove that handling after the laboratory test preserved the sample’s condition.
Even a genuine document can be unrelated to the vial offered, and a genuine test can be too narrow to answer the safety question you care about. Keep those two limitations separate: provenance concerns whether the result belongs to your product; scope concerns what the result measured.

If you intended to use the peptide personally
Do not use research-chemical documentation as a substitute for medical care. A “research use only” label does not make an unapproved product an approved medicine, and a purity result does not establish safe preparation, dosing, sterility, or clinical benefit. Discuss treatment with a licensed clinician and obtain medicines through a lawful pharmacy route. This guide does not provide instructions for reconstitution, injection, dosing, or self-treatment.

A practical stop rule
Before buying, you should be able to answer all of these questions in writing:
- What exact substance and form is being sold?
- Which unique lot will I receive?
- Does the report identify that same lot?
- Which laboratory performed each test, and can the report be verified?
- Is identity tested separately from relative HPLC purity?
- Is peptide content by mass reported separately?
- Which safety-related properties are tested, and which remain unknown?
- Does the seller’s presentation imply human use despite a research disclaimer?
If any answer is missing, describe the product as unverified, not authentic. The financially safer choice is to walk away rather than infer certainty from a label, testimonial, or impressive percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if a peptide COA is real?
Check that the report names the substance, laboratory, methods, dates, and a unique lot identifier matching the vial you are offered. Then contact the laboratory independently to verify the report number and sample details. A genuine report can still be unrelated to your vial, so lot provenance matters.
What does “third-party tested” mean?
It means an outside laboratory performed or reported a test. The phrase does not by itself establish independence, accreditation, sample chain of custody, test scope, or safety. Ask who tested which lot, by what method, and whether the laboratory will verify the report.
Does “research use only” mean a peptide is safe?
No. The disclaimer is not approval, sterility evidence, or a guarantee of lawful status. FDA warning letters dated August 24, 2026 described cases where other website evidence indicated intended human drug use despite similar disclaimers.
Does a 99% HPLC result mean a vial contains 99% peptide by weight?
No. HPLC purity generally describes relative chromatographic peak area under the stated method. Water, salts, counterions, and other material can affect peptide content by mass, which requires separate quantitative evidence.
