How to Spot and Report IRS Tax Refund Scams

Do not click, reply, call back, or pay through an unexpected IRS refund message. A promised refund, urgent deadline, threat, or request for your Social Security number or bank details is a reason to stop and verify through a known IRS.gov route. Open IRS.gov yourself or sign in to your IRS Online Account; never use the link or phone number in the message.

The IRS normally starts contact by U.S. mail. It uses email or text only when you have opted in, although an IRS employee or authorized private collection agency may call about certain account matters. A call alone does not prove fraud, so authenticate it independently. These steps reflect IRS procedures available as of October 13, 2026, including the IRS Tax Tip 2026-02 warning issued January 8, 2026.

Why refund scams work

Refund scams exploit the expectation that a tax filing may produce money. A text, email, letter, social-media message, or call may claim that you have an “unclaimed refund,” an unusually large credit, or a problem that must be fixed before payment is released. The goal is usually to collect identity or financial information, install malware, obtain a payment, or persuade you to submit a false tax claim.

Impersonators can copy IRS colors, seals, writing styles, and caller ID. Caller ID is not authentication, and a polished logo does not make a message official. The IRS also warns about misleading social-media advice that encourages people to claim credits for which they do not qualify. Do not file a return or claim a credit because an unsolicited message or viral post says you can.

The scammer may combine several tactics in one conversation. For example, a message can promise a refund, send you to a convincing login page, then ask for a one-time code or a “processing fee.” Another version says your refund is being held because your identity needs to be confirmed. Treat each new request as part of the same unverified contact, not as proof that the earlier request was legitimate.

Red flags that point to an IRS refund scam

Unexpected contact with pressure

  • You were contacted without first receiving a related notice by mail.
  • The sender sets a short deadline, threatens arrest, deportation, loss of a license, or another immediate consequence.
  • You are told to pay immediately or to keep the conversation secret.
  • The message says a refund or credit will disappear unless you act through its link or phone number.
  • The sender discourages you from checking IRS.gov, consulting a tax professional, or hanging up.

Urgency is especially suspicious when the supposed issue concerns money you are meant to receive. A legitimate tax question may require a response, but you should be able to pause, save the notice, and verify it through an independent IRS route.

Requests for sensitive information or unusual payment

  • The contact asks for your full Social Security number, tax-identification number, online-account password, debit-card number, bank login, or one-time security code.
  • It demands payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, cash courier, or another method that is difficult to reverse.
  • It asks you to “confirm” information by replying to the message or opening an attachment.
  • It asks for a card or bank account to “deposit” a refund before your filing or account has been verified.

Never send a password or security code to someone who contacted you. A request to reveal a code can let an impostor take over an account even when the original password was not exposed.

Look-alike links and accounts

A link may display words such as “IRS” while leading to a misspelled or unrelated domain. On a computer, you can inspect the destination by hovering without opening it; on a phone, press and hold only if your device shows the destination safely. The safest option is to ignore the link and type IRS.gov yourself or use a bookmark you created previously.

Do not assume that a padlock icon, professional design, or search-engine advertisement proves a site is an IRS site. Use the address you entered yourself, then navigate to the relevant IRS page or your Online Account.

Social-media direct messages

The IRS does not send direct messages through social-media platforms. A supposed IRS account that contacts you privately is fraudulent, even if the profile looks verified or uses official imagery. Do not move the conversation to a private chat app or send a photograph of your tax return to “prove” who you are.

How legitimate IRS contact normally works

Contact method What is normal What should make you stop
Postal mail The IRS normally makes initial contact by U.S. mail and identifies the matter in a written notice. A letter about an unexpected refund, especially one directing you to an unfamiliar website or demanding immediate payment.
Email or text The IRS uses email or text only when you have opted in to a particular service or interaction. An unsolicited message containing a refund promise, a login link, an attachment, or a request for personal or financial information.
Telephone The IRS may call about account matters. Certain taxpayers may also hear from an authorized private collection agency. Threats, pressure to pay during the call, demands for sensitive financial details, or instructions to use a number supplied by the caller.
Social media The IRS does not initiate direct messages with taxpayers through social platforms. Any private message claiming to be the IRS.

There is no accurate “the IRS never calls” rule. Treat the call as unverified until you check the matter through an independent IRS.gov route. A real caller should not prevent you from hanging up and verifying. A caller’s knowledge of your name, address, filing status, or a partial account number is not proof of identity; such details may come from data breaches or public records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify a notice or refund claim without using the message

  1. Stop interacting. Do not reply, click a link, download an attachment, or call the number shown in the communication.
  2. Record the basics. Note the sender, phone number or address, date and time, and what the message asked you to do. Do this without opening unsafe files or forwarding active links.
  3. Open a known route. Type IRS.gov in your browser, use a saved bookmark, or sign in to your IRS Online Account. Do not search for a phone number by copying it from the suspicious message.
  4. Check official notices. Use the IRS “Notices and letters” information and your Online Account to see whether a matching notice or account issue exists. Compare the notice number, tax year, dates, and amounts.
  5. Authenticate a mailed letter. If the letter is not visible in your account or its details do not match, contact IRS customer service using a number found independently on IRS.gov.
  6. Check refund information independently. Use the IRS tools and account information reached from IRS.gov, not a result supplied by the sender. A legitimate refund question should not require you to surrender your password or payment-card details by email or text.
  7. Pause on credit claims. Confirm eligibility with official IRS information or a qualified tax professional before filing an amended return or claiming a credit promoted in an unsolicited message.

A real notice can still require action, so verification is not the same as ignoring it. The safety rule is to begin the conversation yourself through IRS.gov. If you opened a link but did not enter information, close the page and run the security checks provided by your device or browser. If you downloaded a file, disconnect the device from sensitive accounts until you can assess it safely.

Report the scam through the channel that delivered it

Preserve enough information to identify the sender, but do not continue the conversation. Use the matching procedure below. Reporting is useful even when you did not lose money or disclose information.

Message type Report destination Information to include
Email [email protected], subject line “IRS” Send the original as an attachment when possible; ordinary forwarding can strip identifying data.
Text message [email protected], subject line “Text”; optionally forward to 7726 (SPAM) and report to the FTC Sender’s number, message contents, your recipient number, and the date, time, and time zone received.
Social-media message Report the account to the platform and email the full account URL to [email protected], subject line “Social media” The complete profile or account URL and a description of the direct message.
Phone call TIGTA Hotline: 800-366-4484 The caller’s number, date and time, claimed identity, requested action, and any payment demand.
Letter Verify through IRS notices and letters; report a fraudulent tax letter to USPS and the FTC. A state attorney general’s consumer-protection office is another option. Keep a copy or photograph, envelope, postmark, notice number, return address, and any payment instructions.

Reporting a suspicious email

Do not reply or click anything in the email. If your mail program permits it, save the message as a file or use “forward as attachment” so technical headers remain intact. Address it to [email protected] with the subject “IRS.” After reporting, delete it and empty the trash only if you no longer need it for another investigation. Do not alter the message by copying only its visible text when the original file can be preserved safely.

Reporting a suspicious text

Do not respond or open links and attachments. Email [email protected] with the subject “Text.” Include the sender’s phone number, the complete message, the number that received it, and the date, time, and time zone. You may also forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) and file a report with the FTC. Delete the original after you have captured the required details. If the message appears in more than one phone, report each sender number rather than assuming one report covers every copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reporting a social-media impersonator

Use the platform’s report function, then send the full account URL to [email protected] with the subject “Social media.” The IRS says it does not send direct messages through social media, so do not move the conversation to another app or provide information to “verify” the account. Save the profile name and URL before reporting in case the account disappears.

Reporting a scam call

Write down the incoming number, caller name or claimed office, date and time, what was requested, and any payment instructions. Hang up and report the call to the TIGTA Hotline at 800-366-4484. Do not call back through the caller’s number or rely on caller ID. If the caller left a voicemail, retain it until you have recorded the relevant details.

Reporting a scam letter

First compare the letter with notices in your IRS Online Account or the IRS notices-and-letters information. If it is a fake letter about an unclaimed refund or another tax matter, report it to USPS and the FTC; you can also contact your state attorney general’s consumer-protection office. Keep the envelope because postal markings and return addresses can help investigators. Do not mail money, identity documents, or a completed form to the return address until the letter is independently authenticated.

What to do if you already responded

Act quickly, but do not let embarrassment delay you. Tell the bank, card issuer, or tax professional exactly what was shared and when. Keep copies of messages, receipts, transaction records, and report confirmations. The next step depends on whether the exposure involved an account credential, identity number, financial account, or payment.

If you disclosed a password

  1. Change the exposed password immediately from a trusted device. Change it anywhere else you reused it.
  2. Turn on multifactor authentication where available and review account-recovery email addresses and phone numbers.
  3. Sign in to your IRS Online Account by typing IRS.gov yourself and watch for unfamiliar activity or notices.

If you shared bank or card information

  1. Contact the bank, card issuer, or other provider using a number from its official statement, card, or independently opened website.
  2. Explain that the information was exposed in a scam and ask what account lock, replacement, transaction review, or fraud-monitoring steps apply.
  3. Review transactions frequently and report unauthorized activity promptly. Do not wait for the scammer to make a charge.

If you shared a Social Security number or tax-identification number

Use the IRS identity-theft guidance for tax-related exposure and monitor your tax account. An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit IRS safeguard that can help prevent another person from filing a federal return using your Social Security number or ITIN. An IP PIN does not reverse an existing theft and does not replace contacting your bank, card issuer, or other affected provider.

If you paid money

Contact the payment provider immediately through an independently obtained number and report the fraud. The appropriate recovery steps differ for a card payment, bank transfer, wire, gift card, cash payment, or cryptocurrency transaction. Ask the provider what recall, cancellation, dispute, or fraud-reporting options are still available; timing can affect what it can do. Also report the scam through the applicable IRS, TIGTA, USPS, FTC, or platform channel above. Do not pay an additional “recovery” fee to anyone promising to retrieve the first payment.

Safer habits during tax season

  • Use IRS.gov by typing the address or using a bookmark, rather than links in texts, emails, advertisements, or social posts.
  • Keep IRS notices and tax records together so you can compare a new letter with your filing and account history.
  • Do not publish or send your Social Security number, bank details, tax documents, or Online Account password in response to an unsolicited contact.
  • Be skeptical of anyone promising a refund or credit larger than expected without reviewing your actual return and eligibility.
  • Tell family members that the IRS does not use social-media direct messages and that caller ID can be spoofed.
  • Report promptly, but do not forward a scam to friends or coworkers in a way that preserves active links; share the warning without the malicious attachment or URL.
  • Use separate, strong passwords for tax, email, and financial accounts, and keep multifactor authentication enabled.
  • Review your IRS Online Account periodically during filing season instead of waiting for a message to announce a refund.

When a message may be real but still needs verification

A mailed IRS notice can be genuine even if its timing surprises you. An IRS employee can call in circumstances permitted by the agency, and a private collection agency can handle certain accounts. Those facts do not make a demand for immediate payment safe. The deciding step is independent authentication: locate the matter in your IRS Online Account or use contact information obtained from IRS.gov.

Likewise, the absence of a notice in your account does not prove that every mailed letter is fake; account display timing and the type of notice can vary. Compare the letter’s details and ask the IRS through its official route rather than trusting the sender’s instructions. Never allow a caller to rush you past this check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the IRS warning says about current tactics

In Tax Tip 2026-02, dated January 8, 2026, the IRS identified phishing and smishing as common tactics used to steal personal and financial information. That warning is consistent with the practical pattern described here: an unexpected contact, a tempting refund or credit, pressure to act, and a request for information or payment. The reporting addresses and procedures above were current on October 13, 2026, but agencies can change their intake instructions, so check the relevant official page when you report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an IRS refund text message a scam?

An unexpected text promising a refund, demanding information, or creating urgency is highly suspicious. Do not reply or click. Type IRS.gov yourself, check your IRS Online Account, and report the text to [email protected] with the sender number, message, recipient number, and date, time, and time zone. You can also forward it to 7726 and report it to the FTC.

How does the IRS normally contact taxpayers?

The IRS normally makes initial contact by U.S. mail. It uses email or text only when you have opted in. The IRS may call about account matters, and authorized private collection agencies handle certain accounts, so verify any call independently rather than relying on caller ID.

What should I do if I clicked an IRS scam link?

Stop interacting, close the page, and do not enter additional information. If you entered a password, change it from a trusted device and change reused passwords. If you supplied bank, card, Social Security, or tax-identification information, contact the affected provider and follow IRS identity-theft guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do I report a fake IRS email?

Send the original email, preferably saved or forwarded as an attachment, to [email protected] with the subject “IRS.” Do not reply to the sender, click links, or open attachments.

Where do I report an IRS scam call?

Hang up, record the caller’s number and request, and report the call to the TIGTA Hotline at 800-366-4484. Do not call back using the number supplied by the caller.

Can an Identity Protection PIN recover money or reverse identity theft?

No. An IP PIN is a six-digit IRS safeguard that can help prevent another person from filing a federal return with your SSN or ITIN. It does not reverse existing theft and does not replace contacting your bank, card issuer, or other affected provider.

What if I paid an IRS scammer?

Contact the payment provider immediately using an independently obtained number. Ask about cancellation, recall, dispute, or fraud-reporting options; the available remedy depends on whether you used a card, bank transfer, wire, gift card, cash, or cryptocurrency. Then report the scam through the applicable official channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Unexpected refund promises, pressure, and requests for sensitive information are reasons to stop. Verify through IRS.gov, not through the message, and report the contact to the channel-specific IRS, TIGTA, USPS, FTC, or platform destination. If you shared information or paid, contact the affected provider immediately and use IRS identity-theft guidance.
