The clearest warning sign of a card-swapping scam is a cashier or stranger taking a payment terminal away while your card is still inserted, often after an unexplained error, and then returning a similar-looking card. Keep the card and terminal in view, cover the keypad when entering your PIN, and check the name and card before you leave. If your card may have been exchanged, contact the issuer immediately through its official app or the number printed on the card, block or replace the card as directed, and review recent account activity.
What credit card swapping is
Credit card swapping is a physical substitution scam. A fraudster takes your card while it is in a point-of-sale reader and gives you another card that looks similar. The replacement may belong to someone else, have no name printed on it, or simply be an old or counterfeit card. You can leave the shop believing the payment failed or was completed, while the criminal keeps your real card.

CIBC describes the tactic as fraudsters swapping a bank card with a similar-looking card while a payment for a completed service is being made. The method can target credit cards, debit cards and other bank cards, so the same precautions apply even when the card is not a credit card.

| Threat | What happens | What the shopper may notice |
|---|---|---|
| Card swapping | Your physical card is exchanged for another card during a transaction. | Your card is briefly out of sight, then a look-alike card is returned. |
| Skimming | A device or altered reader captures card data, sometimes including a PIN. | The reader may look modified; your card itself is not necessarily exchanged. |
| Terminal substitution or tampering | A payment reader is replaced or modified to capture data or interfere with payments. | The terminal is loose, moved unexpectedly, damaged or fitted with unfamiliar parts. |
These risks can occur together, but they are not the same event. A loose reader alone does not prove that your card was swapped, and a missing transaction does not by itself establish fraud.

How the card-swapping sequence works
- You insert your card. The transaction begins normally at the shop’s payment terminal.
- An error appears. The screen may report that the payment failed, ask for another attempt or stop responding. In the scam described by CIBC, the terminal may capture the PIN instead of completing a payment.
- Someone takes the terminal. The person handling the payment says they need to fix the error, restart the device or obtain help. The critical detail is that your card remains inserted when the terminal leaves your view.
- The card is exchanged. Away from you, the fraudster removes your card and puts in a similar-looking one.
- The terminal is returned. You receive the device and a card that may have the same color, network logo or shape but a different name and number.
- You leave with the wrong card. The criminal can now use your genuine card, while you may not notice the exchange until the card is declined, an alert arrives or an unfamiliar transaction appears.
The approach relies on distraction and the assumption that an error needs to be handled by someone else. It does not require the shopper to hand over a wallet or disclose a PIN verbally; the criminal may see the PIN entered on the keypad or obtain it through a compromised terminal.
What to do while you are paying
Keep the card and terminal together
Insert, tap or swipe the card yourself when the terminal allows it. Keep your hand on the card and maintain a clear view of the reader. Do not allow a cashier or another person to carry the terminal away while your card is still inserted. If the device must be moved, remove your card first and wait until the terminal is back in front of you before continuing.
Handle an error without surrendering control
If the screen shows an error, ask the staff member to bring the terminal back before you remove or reinsert the card. You can cancel the attempt and request a different terminal or another payment method. A legitimate employee should be able to follow the shop’s normal procedure without taking your card out of sight.

Shield your PIN
Use your other hand, body or a wallet to cover the keypad as you enter the PIN. Shielding helps prevent someone nearby from seeing the number, but it cannot protect a PIN captured by a compromised reader. If the terminal looks damaged or behaves unusually, stop and ask for a different device.
Use contactless payment when it is available
CIBC recommends contactless payment as one way to avoid entering a PIN in the described setting. Contactless is a precaution, not a guarantee: transaction limits, occasional PIN requests and the need to verify the returned card still apply. Follow the instructions displayed by your issuer and the terminal.
Verify the physical card before leaving
Before putting the card away, check the name, last four digits and distinctive markings against what you normally carry. Do this at the counter, not later in the car or at home. A card with another person’s name or no name is an immediate reason to stop and ask the shop to check what happened.

Keep receipts and notifications in view
Confirm whether the transaction was approved, declined or cancelled on the terminal and receipt. A payment that does not appear immediately in your banking app can reflect processing delays, an offline transaction or a failed attempt; it is not proof of a swap. Still, note the time, shop and amount so you can reconcile the account later.
Warning signs and the right response
| What you notice | Why it matters | Immediate response |
|---|---|---|
| The terminal leaves your view while your card is inserted. | This is the central opportunity for a physical exchange. | Ask for the terminal back, remove the card and restart the payment only when you can watch it. |
| An unexplained error follows by a request to “fix” the reader elsewhere. | The error can create the distraction needed to swap the card or capture a PIN. | Decline the handoff and request a supervisor, a different terminal or another payment method. |
| The returned card has a different name, no name or unfamiliar last four digits. | The card may not be yours. | Do not leave. Ask staff to locate your card and keep the replacement; document what happened. |
| The expected payment is missing from your account. | A failed or delayed transaction is possible; in the scam described by CIBC, a PIN may have been recorded without a completed payment. | Check the receipt and account, then contact the issuer if the card was out of sight or other signs appear. |
| An unfamiliar purchase, issuer alert or unexpected decline appears later. | These are indicators of possible card fraud, although they have causes unrelated to swapping. | Use an official issuer channel to report the activity and follow its blocking or replacement instructions. |
| The reader has broken seals, a cracked casing, missing screws or has moved without explanation. | Those can indicate terminal tampering rather than a card exchange. | Do not use that device; ask staff for a secure terminal and notify the shop manager. |
No single warning sign proves that a swap occurred. Treat the combination of an out-of-sight card, an unexplained error and a look-alike replacement as urgent, while investigating less specific signs in context.
If you think your card was swapped
- Stop using the card. Keep the card that was returned, if you still have it, in a safe place. Do not attempt another purchase with it until you know whether it is yours.
- Contact the issuer through an official channel. Use the issuer’s mobile app, a verified website or the telephone number printed on the card. Do not rely on a number supplied by a stranger or an unsolicited message.
- Explain the physical exchange. Tell the issuer that the card may have been removed from a terminal and replaced, and provide the shop, time, amount, terminal details and any receipt information.
- Block or replace the card as directed. The issuer may cancel the card, issue a new number, reset access credentials or ask you to confirm recent transactions. Replacement and dispute rules vary by issuer and country.
- Review recent activity. Check posted and pending transactions, cash withdrawals, digital-wallet activity and account alerts. Save screenshots or statements showing anything you do not recognize.
- Turn on alerts. Enable transaction notifications and other account monitoring features offered by your issuer so that further activity reaches you promptly.
- Report locally when appropriate. Ask the issuer which police, consumer-protection or payment-network report is appropriate in your country. Emergency numbers, evidence rules and card-fraud procedures are not universal.
If the physical card is missing, tell the issuer that it was taken rather than merely “lost.” If you received somebody else’s card, do not try to use it or post its details online; follow the issuer’s instructions for returning or destroying it.

What retail staff should do
Use a consistent checkout routine
Victoria Police recommends physically inspecting cards, watching for suspicious behavior, escalating concerns to a supervisor or owner and refusing to manually enter card details without prior approval. Staff should complete the transaction before releasing goods, services or merchandise. A written routine reduces the chance that an employee improvises when a customer or companion creates pressure.
- Keep the customer’s card in view whenever it is inserted, removed or returned.
- Ask the cardholder to remove the card if a terminal must be moved or rebooted.
- Compare the card’s name and visible details with the transaction context without making assumptions about a customer’s appearance, age, accent or other personal characteristics.
- Call a supervisor when a customer, companion or supposed technician insists on bypassing the normal process.
- Do not manually key card details unless the shop’s approved procedure and an authorized supervisor permit it.
Control the terminals
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police advises businesses to know where every PIN pad is, keep devices out of sight when not in use, secure them after hours, inspect them regularly and check service personnel identification. USDA’s retailer notice adds marking devices, monitoring them, refusing unscheduled service visits until the provider verifies the visit and contacting police and the payment-terminal provider when tampering is suspected.
- Maintain an inventory of terminal identification numbers, locations and assigned accessories.
- Check for broken seals, cracked casing, missing screws, unexplained movement or unfamiliar attachments at opening and closing.
- Keep a clear view of the terminal during each transaction and prevent customers or visitors from handling internal cables or equipment.
- Verify a technician’s identity through the processor’s known contact channel, not only a badge or telephone number presented on arrival.
- Lock away spare readers and secure active devices after hours.
Respond to suspected tampering or swapping
Move customers away from an altered device, stop using it and notify the manager, payment-terminal provider and appropriate local authorities. The RCMP says an altered device should be treated as a crime scene. Avoid dismantling it, wiping it down or returning it to service before investigators or the provider gives instructions.

Record the transaction time, terminal identifier, employee observations, receipts, staff involved and any card or account information that can be documented lawfully. Preserve relevant CCTV footage before it is overwritten. Keep the conversation factual and focused on established procedures; profiling customers is neither a reliable fraud control nor an appropriate substitute for evidence.
Which safeguards address which risk?
| Safeguard | Primary user | Risk addressed | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keeping the card and terminal in sight | Shopper and cashier | Physical card exchange during checkout | Does not detect earlier account compromise. |
| Covering the PIN keypad | Shopper | Visual observation of the PIN | Cannot defeat a compromised reader. |
| Contactless payment | Shopper | Entering a PIN in the described interaction | Limits and occasional PIN prompts vary; the card still must be checked. |
| Returned-card verification | Shopper | Leaving with a look-alike card | Works only if checked before departure. |
| Card inspection and no unapproved manual entry | Retail staff | Suspicious card use and bypassed controls | Requires consistent training and supervisor support. |
| Terminal inventory, inspections and secure storage | Retail owner or manager | Reader substitution and tampering | Requires records, physical checks and provider cooperation. |
| Verified service access and incident preservation | Retail owner or manager | Unauthorized maintenance and evidence loss | Reporting contacts and legal procedures depend on location. |
What is and is not established about the scale of the scam
Authoritative consumer and law-enforcement guidance explains the method and controls but does not provide a reliable public statistic measuring this specific in-store swapping tactic. General card-fraud figures, skimming counts or online-shopping losses should not be presented as a measure of card swapping at shops. The practical response is therefore based on observable behavior and account monitoring rather than an assumed probability.
