Most unsolicited student-loan forgiveness offers should be treated as unverified until you check them yourself. Do not pay an upfront fee, share your StudentAid.gov (FSA ID) username or password, sign an authorization under pressure, or stop or redirect payments because a caller, text, email, or social-media message told you to. Federal borrowers can check their loan details and available programs free by typing StudentAid.gov into their browser and using the servicer shown on the dashboard. Private-loan borrowers should contact their lender or servicer through a trusted statement or independently verified website.
Scammers often use urgency, guarantees, official-looking seals, familiar names, and spoofed caller ID. A legitimate program still has eligibility rules, and the U.S. Department of Education and its partners will not ask for your StudentAid.gov login credentials. If you already shared information or money, protect account access first, then contact the servicer, bank or card issuer, and the appropriate reporting agencies.

What legitimate student-loan forgiveness looks like
Federal forgiveness is not a secret product sold through a special access channel. Eligibility depends on the specific program, loan type, qualifying employment or service, payment history, and other requirements. A salesperson cannot waive those rules or guarantee an immediate result.

Federal programs have defined rules
Federal Student Aid identifies programs such as Direct Consolidation, Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), and Teacher Loan Forgiveness. Each has its own conditions. For example, qualifying employment and payments matter for PSLF, while Teacher Loan Forgiveness depends on the applicable teaching and loan requirements. Current rules, forms, deadlines, and qualifying details can change, so use the official program information and your servicer rather than a promise made in an advertisement.

Federal help is available free
Federal Student Aid says its loan servicers can help borrowers explore repayment plans and forgiveness at no cost. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) likewise says, “There’s nothing a debt relief company can do for you that you can’t do yourself for free,” in its consumer guidance. A company charging a fee is not automatically fraudulent in every circumstance, but you do not need to pay a third party to submit a federal application or explain the programs available through your official account. Upfront debt-relief fees and false government affiliation are especially serious warning signs.
Private loans are a separate system
Private student loans generally have different contracts and may offer fewer repayment or forgiveness options. Federal forgiveness programs do not automatically apply to them. For a private loan, ask the lender or servicer directly about hardship options, repayment changes, settlement terms, or any forgiveness provision in your contract. Use contact information from a recent statement or a website address you locate independently—not a link in a suspicious message.
Warning signs that an offer may be a scam
One warning sign does not prove that a company is fraudulent, but several together should end the conversation until you verify the claim through your own account.
| Offer or behavior | Why it is concerning | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| “Act now,” “first come, first served,” or a claim that a program is about to disappear | Federal Student Aid identifies pressure language as a common scam signal. Scammers exploit confusion about news, deadlines, or changing programs. | Pause. Check current eligibility and deadlines directly through StudentAid.gov or the servicer listed on your dashboard. |
| Guaranteed immediate or total cancellation | Official programs have eligibility rules and commonly require qualifying circumstances, service, or payment history. | Do not enroll or pay based on the promise. Read the official program terms and ask your servicer whether you qualify. |
| Upfront, monthly “maintenance,” enrollment, or subscription fee | Official Federal Student Aid help is free, and the FTC warns about illegal upfront debt-relief fees. | Decline, preserve the message and payment records, and report suspected fraud. |
| A request for your FSA ID, StudentAid.gov password, bank details, or card number | Credentials and payment details can enable account takeover or theft. | Do not share them. Contact your servicer through an independently verified channel. |
| A government seal, official-sounding name, or familiar caller ID | Scammers can copy logos, impersonate agencies, and spoof contact information. | Check the actual web domain and locate contact details yourself. Treat the branding as unverified until you do. |
| Instructions to stop regular payments or route them through the company | Missed payments can cause fees, credit consequences, and loss of control of the account. | Confirm any change directly with your servicer before acting. |
Urgency is not proof of a real deadline
A caller may say that funding is almost gone, enrollment closes that day, or forgiveness is available only to people who respond immediately. These statements are designed to stop you from checking. A real deadline can be verified on StudentAid.gov or through your servicer without using the caller’s link or telephone number.

A guarantee conflicts with eligibility-based programs
Words such as “everyone qualifies,” “100% cancellation,” or “government-approved shortcut” leave no room for loan type, employment, service, or payment requirements. Ask which official program applies, what rule makes you eligible, and where you can read that rule yourself. If the representative refuses to answer or says the details are confidential, end the contact.
Payment requests deserve extra scrutiny
Some companies describe recurring charges as account monitoring, maintenance, or enrollment rather than a debt-relief fee. The label does not change the risk. Federal applications and servicer assistance are available without that charge. Do not give a stranger authorization to debit a bank account or card while you are still trying to determine whether the offer is real.
How to verify an offer without giving a scammer more access
Verification works only when you start from a trusted path. Do not click the link, call the number, or reply to the message that raised your suspicion.

- Open the official federal site yourself. Type StudentAid.gov in the address bar. Sign in only on the site you entered yourself, not on a page reached through an unsolicited link. Review the dashboard for your federal loan balances, servicer, contact information, and current account notices.
- Use the servicer shown on the dashboard. Follow the contact route in your official account or a statement you already possess. Ask whether the claimed program exists, whether you have an application in progress, and whether any change has been made to your repayment plan or contact information.
- For a private loan, use the lender’s own records. Find the telephone number on a recent statement, the lender’s independently located website, or another trusted document. Ask what relief options the contract and lender actually provide. Do not assume a federal program applies.
- Compare the request with the official process. A legitimate helper should not need your StudentAid.gov username or password, should not pressure you to sign a power of attorney, and should not require payment simply to submit a federal form. If the proposed process depends on secrecy or bypassing your servicer, stop.
- Check the destination before entering information. A polished design, seal, or familiar name is not authentication. Look at the complete domain and confirm it through a separate browser session. Never use a suspicious message as your verification route.
What to do if you shared a password, signed an authorization, or paid
Act promptly, but do not let the same person “fix” the problem by requesting more credentials or a second payment. Use this order unless your bank or servicer tells you an emergency requires a different sequence.

1. Protect StudentAid.gov access
- Go to StudentAid.gov by typing the address yourself and change the password immediately.
- Review the account email address, mailing address, and telephone number. Correct anything you do not recognize.
- Review recent account activity and notices for changes you did not authorize.
- Report the incident through Federal Student Aid’s complaint process. The Department of Education’s warning explains that it and its partners—including loan servicers—will never ask for your StudentAid.gov username and password; read the full notice at How To Avoid Student Loan Forgiveness Scams.
If you reused the same password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Do not send the replacement password to anyone claiming to be an investigator or servicer.
2. Check whether your loan account was changed
Call the federal servicer listed on your StudentAid.gov dashboard. Ask whether a payment, repayment-plan selection, mailing address, email address, phone number, third-party authorization, or other account action was made. If someone signed an authorization for you, ask the servicer how to revoke it and request confirmation of the revocation. For a private loan, contact the lender or servicer directly and ask the same questions.
3. Try to stop unauthorized payments
Call your bank or card issuer promptly. Ask whether future charges, automatic debits, or transfers can be stopped and whether a payment already made can be disputed. Keep the case number and the representative’s name if provided. Stopping a scammer’s debit does not cancel a legitimate loan obligation, so continue to follow payment instructions confirmed by the actual servicer.

Keep contracts, invoices, receipts, bank and card records, emails, text messages, voicemails, caller IDs, web addresses, and notes of conversations. Do not delete the original message before saving screenshots or exporting the relevant records. Evidence can help a bank, servicer, regulator, or law-enforcement agency understand what happened.

5. Report the conduct
Submit a report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Federal Student Aid lists its own complaint process and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as additional reporting options. FTC guidance also recommends notifying your state attorney general. Reporting does not guarantee a refund or reversal, but it creates a record that can support investigations and warnings to other borrowers.
6. Keep following verified loan instructions
Do not assume that a third party’s promise paused interest, changed your payment, or placed the loan into an approved program. Until your actual servicer confirms a change, follow the payment and correspondence instructions in the official account. If a payment is unaffordable, tell the servicer and ask about available options rather than simply stopping payments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How federal and private borrowers should evaluate help
There are two practical routes, not two equivalent versions of the same offer. Start by identifying the loan type and the official account that can verify it.
| Question | Federal loans | Private loans |
|---|---|---|
| Where to verify the balance and account owner | StudentAid.gov dashboard and the federal servicer listed there | The lender or servicer named on the borrower’s statement or contract |
| Which forgiveness or repayment rules apply | Federal program rules, including requirements for programs such as PSLF or Teacher Loan Forgiveness | The private contract and the lender’s current hardship or repayment policies |
| Where to start for help | StudentAid.gov and the listed servicer; federal help and applications are free | The lender or servicer contacted through an independently verified channel |
| Information a legitimate helper should not demand | StudentAid.gov username or password, or an unexplained power of attorney | Online-banking credentials, card details, or unexplained authority to control the account |
| What a promise cannot establish | It cannot replace eligibility, qualifying employment or service, or required payment history | It cannot turn a private loan into a federal loan or create a federal benefit |
Do not choose a service because of its logo, a claimed government affiliation, or a high-pressure success story. Compare the actual program, the eligibility rule, the cost, the authorization being requested, and the official party that can confirm the change.

Why impersonation is so effective
Student-loan scams often borrow the visual language of government: seals, formal letterhead, official-sounding department names, and telephone numbers that appear local or familiar. Caller ID and email display names can be spoofed. A message may also refer to a real program, such as PSLF, while falsely claiming that the sender can guarantee approval.
Federal Student Aid’s warning is unambiguous: “The U.S. Department of Education and our partners—including loan servicers—will never ask for your StudentAid.gov username and password.” Read that statement in context at Federal Student Aid’s scam guidance. The safe response to an official-looking request is still independent verification.
What recent enforcement tells borrowers
In a June 2025 consumer alert, the FTC said it settled a case against Panda Benefit Services, also doing business as Prosperity Benefit Services, and affiliated companies and operators. The FTC described alleged false affiliation and illegal upfront-fee tactics, reported more than $16.7 million in fees, and said the companies were banned from the debt-relief industry following the action. Those are allegations and an enforcement outcome attributed to the FTC, not proof that every paid service is fraudulent. They do show why claims of government affiliation and demands for upfront fees deserve careful checking.
Federal Student Aid cites the FTC’s total of 2.6 million fraud reports received in 2023. That figure covers fraud reports broadly; it is not a count of student-loan scam reports. Use it as context for the scale of reported fraud, not as a measure of how many borrowers received a forgiveness scam.
A short checklist before you respond
- Did the contact arrive unexpectedly by phone, text, email, social media, or mail?
- Does it create urgency or say the offer is first-come, first-served?
- Does it guarantee immediate or total cancellation?
- Does it ask for an FSA ID, StudentAid.gov password, bank details, card number, or a one-time code?
- Does it demand an upfront, monthly, enrollment, or maintenance fee?
- Does it use a seal, name, or caller ID that you have not independently verified?
- Does it tell you to stop payments, redirect them, or give the company control of your account?
- Can you find the same program and contact route by typing StudentAid.gov yourself or calling your private lender from a trusted statement?
If any answer raises concern, stop the exchange and verify through the official account. You can apply for federal programs yourself and ask the servicer to explain the available paths without handing over control of your account.
Bottom line
Student-loan forgiveness is governed by eligibility rules, not by secret access, urgency, or a salesperson’s guarantee. Verify federal loans at StudentAid.gov and private loans with the lender; never surrender login credentials or pay upfront for federal application help. If information or money has already been shared, change compromised credentials, check for account changes, contact the bank and servicer, preserve evidence, and report the conduct to the FTC and relevant authorities.
