That is the clearest protection against the most common online dating scam. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says, “Never send money or gifts to a love interest you haven’t met in person.” The FBI similarly advises, “Never send money to anyone you have only communicated with online or by phone.”
Romance scammers manufacture a believable identity, build affection and trust, and then create a crisis, investment opportunity, or other reason for you to send value. A single warning sign does not prove fraud, but a pattern of rushed intimacy, repeated excuses for not meeting, pressure to leave the dating service, and urgent requests for money should end the conversation.

What an online dating scam looks like
A romance scam is a confidence fraud built around a fake or impersonated identity. The person may use a copied photograph, invented occupation, or false location on a dating app, social network, or messaging service. After making contact, the scammer invests time in creating the impression of a committed relationship. The financial request can arrive days or months later, when affection and trust make the request harder to refuse.
Common stories include needing airfare, a visa fee, medical treatment, a payment to release a package, help for a supposed child, or emergency money after an account is blocked. Another pattern is an offer to teach you cryptocurrency or stock investing. The story changes, but the objective is the same: obtain money, valuable information, access to an account, or your help moving funds.

These are warning patterns rather than a mathematical test. Someone can be genuine and still live abroad, work remotely, prefer another messaging service, or be unable to meet once. Concern rises when several patterns appear together, especially when the person will not verify basic claims and asks you to act quickly.
The warning signs that deserve the most attention
Rushed emotional intimacy
Declarations of love, marriage plans, or unusually deep trust very early in an online relationship can be a manipulation tactic. Emotional closeness is used to make a later request feel like something partners should do for each other. Notice the speed and pressure, not merely whether the person is affectionate.
Repeated excuses for not meeting
A contact may claim to be overseas, in the military, on a remote project, or dealing with a continuing emergency. One canceled plan is not proof of a scam. A repeated pattern of postponements, ever-changing explanations, and a new crisis whenever a meeting becomes possible is more serious—particularly if it is paired with a request for money or travel assistance.
A quick move off the dating service
Scammers often push a conversation to private email, text, or an encrypted messaging service soon after contact. Moving platforms is not automatically fraudulent, but it removes the safeguards and reporting tools of the original service. Be cautious if the person insists on leaving immediately, discourages you from using the app, or becomes angry when you prefer to keep communicating there.

Urgent requests for money or gifts
Urgency is designed to prevent you from checking the story with someone else. Frequent claims include plane tickets, visa or immigration costs, medical bills, customs or shipping fees, rent, emergency travel, or gifts for supposed children. Treat requests for gift cards, wire transfers, payment-app transfers, cryptocurrency, or bank deposits as major red flags.
Investment instructions from a romantic contact
A person who offers to teach you cryptocurrency or stock trading, sends a link to an investment dashboard, or promises unusually reliable returns is using a documented romance-scam pattern. Do not transfer money, share account credentials, or follow investment instructions supplied by an online romantic contact. A relationship is not evidence that an investment is legitimate.
Requests to use your account or move valuables
Never let an online romantic contact use your bank account to receive, withdraw, or forward money. Requests to accept a deposit, cash a check, buy cryptocurrency, receive a package, or forward valuables can involve you in theft, money laundering, or another victim’s fraud. You can be exposed to financial loss and an investigation even if you believe you are helping a partner.

A scammer may tell you that friends or family do not understand the relationship, demand secrecy, or create conflict when someone questions the story. Requests for intimate photographs can become extortion. Publicly visible details such as your employer, address, phone number, birth date, travel plans, or children’s names can support identity abuse or targeted pressure.

A practical way to check whether a profile is real
Use the following checks to find inconsistencies. None proves that a person is genuine, and a clean search is not a guarantee of safety.
- Keep the conversation on the original service at first. Learn how its reporting and blocking tools work before agreeing to move elsewhere.
- Ask specific, ordinary questions. Ask about the person’s stated job, location, schedule, family details, and plans in a way that lets you compare answers over time. Watch for vague replies, contradictions, or answers that sound copied.
- Search the profile photograph. Use a reverse-image search to see whether the same image appears under different names, locations, or occupations. A match is evidence to investigate, not a complete identification.
- Search the stated occupation with the word “scammer.” The FTC recommends this because criminals often reuse scripts, photos, and job stories. Consider the results as leads, not a final verdict.
- Check claims independently. Use contact information or public records you find yourself, not links or phone numbers supplied by the person. Do not rely on a screenshot of an identity document or an investment account.
- Ask a trusted person to review the situation. Share the profile, messages, and the request. A friend who is not emotionally involved may notice pressure, inconsistencies, or an implausible story.
- Set a no-money boundary. Tell the person you do not send funds, gifts, account access, or financial information to someone you have not met in person. Their reaction is useful information: respect for the boundary is healthier than anger, guilt, threats, or a new emergency.
The no-money rule: payment methods scammers favor
Different payment methods create different recovery possibilities, but none makes a romance request safe. Once you send money, it may be moved through several accounts or converted to an irreversible form.
| Request or method | Why it is a red flag | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Gift cards or gift-card codes | Codes can be used immediately and are difficult to recover. | Do not buy or send the code; stop communicating and report the account. |
| Wire transfer | Transfers can be rapid and difficult to reverse after collection. | Do not send it. If already sent, contact the provider immediately and ask about cancellation or recall. |
| Payment-app transfer | A scammer can pressure you to mark a personal transfer as completed. | Do not approve the payment or share login or verification codes. |
| Cryptocurrency | Transactions are generally difficult to reverse, and romance scams commonly use crypto investment stories. | Do not transfer funds or connect a wallet at the person’s direction. |
| Bank deposit or account access | Your account may be used to move stolen money or conceal another fraud. | Refuse to receive or forward funds and contact your bank if information was shared. |
| Cash, valuables, or packages | You could lose the item or become involved in transporting stolen property. | Do not accept, ship, or resell valuables for an online romantic contact. |
In a 2023 FTC spotlight covering 2022 reports, cryptocurrency and bank wires together represented more than 60% of reported romance-scam losses. That is a figure for reported losses, not a measure of every scam or every dating-app user.
Protect your information before a relationship is established
- Limit public profile details such as your full name, home address, employer, daily schedule, and financial information.
- Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication for email, banking, social, and dating accounts.
- Do not share bank-account numbers, card numbers, online-banking credentials, one-time codes, government identification numbers, or copies of identity documents.
- Assume an intimate image could be saved and redistributed. Do not send an image because someone threatens to leave, claims it is proof of love, or promises to keep it private.
- Do not allow a contact to log in to your accounts, install remote-access software, or “verify” your identity through a code sent to your phone.
- Keep your own transportation, lodging, and spending arrangements for any meeting. Do not make travel dependent on sending money to the other person.
If you decide to meet in person
Meeting in person does not prove that every claim is true and does not remove financial risk. Do not arrange international travel, pay a person’s fare, or send money as a condition of meeting. For travel abroad, the FBI Chicago public-service advice is to proceed with caution.

Use a gradual, independent process: tell a trusted person where you are going, keep control of your transportation and payment methods, choose a public setting, and leave if you feel pressured. These are general precautions for an early meeting; the federal guidance cited here does not establish one universal meeting protocol.
What to do if the person asks for money
- Pause. Do not answer an urgent request immediately. Save the message and any payment instructions.
- Refuse the transaction. Do not send money, gifts, codes, account details, or an image. Do not negotiate a smaller amount.
- Tell someone you trust. Show the complete conversation, including the profile and the request, rather than a summary.
- Stop communication. Block the account after preserving the information you may need for a report. Do not warn the person that you are reporting them.
- Report the profile to the dating or social service. Use the service’s report and block controls; labels and menu paths vary by service.
If you already sent money or shared information
Act quickly, but do not assume recovery is possible. The FTC says to contact the company used to send the money and ask whether the transfer can be stopped or recovered; the money may already be gone.
- Contact the payment provider now. Call the bank, card issuer, wire service, payment app, gift-card company, or cryptocurrency exchange using contact details you locate independently. Ask whether the transaction can be canceled, recalled, frozen, or disputed. Give the transaction date, amount, recipient, and reference number.
- Secure accounts. Change reused passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, contact your bank about exposed credentials, and review statements for unauthorized activity. If you shared an identity document or tax information, ask the relevant institution what protective steps it recommends.
- Preserve practical evidence. Keep messages, usernames, profile URLs, photographs, email headers, phone numbers, payment receipts, wallet addresses, and transaction records. This is preparation for platform and law-enforcement reports, not a universal official checklist.
- Report the account and the fraud. Submit the profile to the service where contact began, then file U.S. reports with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
- Ignore recovery offers from strangers. Someone who promises to retrieve your money for an upfront fee may be running a second scam. Use only the payment provider, your financial institution, and official reporting channels.
Where U.S. readers should report
The dating or social platform
Report the profile through the service where the first contact occurred. Include the username, profile link, screenshots, dates, and the nature of the request. Blocking prevents further messages but does not substitute for a report.

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center
File an online complaint at ic3.gov, especially when money, cryptocurrency, identity information, or a bank account was involved. Include accurate transaction and contact details.
These routes are U.S.-focused. Readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection and cybercrime reporting agencies as well as the platform’s reporting process.
What the numbers show—and what they do not
The FBI Chicago public-service announcement released February 13, 2026 reported 17,910 romance-scam complaints to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and $672,009,052 in associated reported losses for 2024. Those are national complaint and reported-loss totals for that reporting year, not a census of all fraud.
An FTC 2023 spotlight describing 2022 reports found that 40% of people who said they lost money to a romance scam reported first contact through social media, while 19% reported a website or app. The percentages describe the channel reported by people who lost money; they are not the share of all users or all scams.
Numbers undercount fraud because many victims do not report, and they can overrepresent cases with large losses. Use them to understand the scale of the problem, not to calculate your personal probability of being scammed.
How to distinguish an awkward interaction from a likely scam
| Situation | What it means | Prudent next step |
|---|---|---|
| The person prefers another messaging app. | Platform migration alone is not proof of fraud. | Keep boundaries, avoid sharing sensitive information, and do not send money. |
| The person cannot meet once because of work or illness. | A single delay can have an innocent explanation. | Look for consistent details and whether future plans are made and kept. |
| The person repeatedly postpones meetings and adds emergencies. | The pattern is a significant warning sign. | Stop financial and intimate exchanges; ask a trusted person to review the messages. |
| The person asks for a small amount “just this once.” | Small requests can test whether pressure works before larger demands. | Apply the no-money rule and end the conversation. |
| The person sends investment instructions or guaranteed returns. | This matches a documented romance-investment scam pattern. | Do not transfer funds or follow the instructions; report the account. |
A quick decision checklist
- Have you met this person in person? If not, do not send money, gifts, financial information, or account access.
- Did intimacy, exclusivity, or marriage talk develop unusually quickly?
- Has the person repeatedly avoided a meeting or changed the reason?
- Did they push you off the original dating or social service?
- Is there an emergency, travel cost, package fee, account problem, or investment opportunity?
- Are you being asked to keep the relationship secret from people you trust?
- Have you searched the photo and profile details and asked an independent person for an opinion?
- Would you make the same payment if a stranger made the request without the romantic context?
If the answers include several warning patterns, stop contact and report the account. You do not need courtroom-level proof to protect your money.
