Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPause before paying, clicking, or sharing information. Find the exact credit name and tax year, verify its eligibility rules on IRS.gov (including the IRS Interactive Tax Assistant when it covers the credit), and compare those rules with your own records. A promoter’s guarantee, “pre-approved” label, social-media post, or large calculator result is not proof that you qualify. Do not pay an enrollment, activation, release, or expediting fee: the IRS says no individual or business can speed up an IRS refund for a fee.

What a legitimate tax-credit offer looks like
A genuine tax credit is created by tax law and has defined eligibility, income, filing-status, timing, and documentation requirements. It is claimed on a tax return or through an authorized process; it is not unlocked by sending money to a promoter. The amount depends on facts such as your income, dependents, expenses, residence, or other qualifying circumstances. No advertisement can replace the law or the IRS instructions for the relevant tax year.
Recommended Free Tools
Start by identifying the exact name of the claimed credit. “New family credit,” “worker rebate,” or “government relief” is not precise enough. Ask which federal law created it, which tax year it applies to, whether it is refundable or nonrefundable, and what records prove eligibility. If the pitch refers to a recently enacted or expanded benefit, check current IRS guidance because the rules can change.

The IRS Interactive Tax Assistant can help with credits it covers. Treat its result as guidance based on the facts you enter, not as a promise that a return will produce a particular refund. A qualified tax professional can explain how a credit interacts with the rest of your return, but that person cannot waive the statutory requirements.
A verification process you can complete before paying
1. Capture the claim without engaging with the sender
Save the advertisement, message, email address, phone number, website address, and any stated credit name or tax year. Do not click a link in an unsolicited message merely to investigate it, and do not reply with your Social Security number, bank information, date of birth, tax account password, or an IRS verification code. Navigate to IRS.gov by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark you already trust.
2. Find the official eligibility rules
Search IRS.gov for the exact credit name and the applicable tax year. Read the eligibility page, instructions, and documentation requirements rather than relying on a summary supplied by the seller. Use the Interactive Tax Assistant if the credit is included. Check details that a sales pitch often omits:
- the tax year and filing deadline;
- income limits, phaseouts, and filing-status rules;
- age, residency, employment, education, dependent, or expense requirements;
- whether the credit is refundable, nonrefundable, or limited by tax liability;
- forms, receipts, employer statements, school records, or other supporting documents; and
- whether the rule applies to your federal return, your state return, or both.
Write down the rule that appears to fit and the evidence you have for each requirement. If the official material does not recognize the credit name, stop and ask for the statutory name or a citation to the IRS guidance. A vague description cannot establish eligibility.

3. Test the facts, not the promise
Compare your circumstances with every requirement. Do not treat a preliminary calculator as an approval. A legitimate calculator estimates an outcome from stated assumptions; it cannot guarantee a refund before your complete return is prepared and accepted. If the promoter refuses to show the assumptions, uses a result that is dramatically larger than your own estimate, or says everyone qualifies, end the conversation.
4. Ask what you are actually buying
Get a written description of the service, the total fee, what work it includes, and when payment is due. Ordinary tax-preparation fees may be lawful when clearly disclosed, but they are different from a fee demanded to “enroll,” “activate,” “release,” or accelerate a government benefit. The IRS specifically warns about suspicious fee practices, including charges tied to the refund amount or an offer to split the refund.
5. Inspect the return before signing
If a paid preparer is involved, require a complete copy of the return and all schedules before you sign. Check every income figure, dependent, credit, bank account, and withholding amount against your records. Ask the preparer to explain any entry you do not understand. Never sign a blank or incomplete return, even if the preparer says it will be finished later.
Red flags that should stop the transaction
| What you see | Why it is concerning | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| An unsolicited text, email, or social-media message says you have a credit | The IRS says it does not initiate contact through these channels to request personal information or payment. | Do not click or reply. Go directly to IRS.gov and verify the credit independently. |
| “Pre-approved,” “everyone qualifies,” or “guaranteed” language | Eligibility depends on your tax facts and the law; a marketer cannot pre-approve a return. | Look up the exact credit and test each requirement against your records. |
| A large or guaranteed refund is promised before your return is reviewed | The amount can depend on income, filing status, tax liability, documentation, and other credits. A guarantee may be a lure. | Demand the assumptions and calculate from official guidance. Do not pay based on the headline number. |
| A secret loophole or “inside IRS program” is offered | Tax law is not made valid by secrecy, a private code, or special access claimed by a seller. | Ask for the law and current IRS instructions. If they cannot provide them, walk away. |
| Urgency, a countdown, or a demand to act today | Pressure prevents you from checking the tax year, eligibility, and fee terms. | Stop the interaction and verify at your own pace through official channels. |
| A fee to enroll, activate, release, or expedite payment | The IRS says benefits do not require an enrollment fee and no one can speed up an IRS refund for a fee. | Do not pay. Obtain a written fee schedule for any legitimate preparation work instead. |
| A fee based on the refund amount or an offer to split the refund | The IRS identifies these practices as warning signs in tax-credit and preparer scams. | Seek another preparer and compare transparent, clearly disclosed fees. |
| A calculator guarantees a very large result or asks for sensitive data before showing assumptions | The tool may be phishing for identity or financial information rather than estimating a credit. | Use official IRS tools and avoid entering sensitive information into the promotional site. |
| A preparer refuses to sign, provide a PTIN, or give you a finished copy | A paid preparer must sign the return and include a valid preparer tax identification number. | Do not use that preparer and do not sign the return. |
How to evaluate a paid tax preparer
Hiring help is not automatically suspicious. The key question is whether the preparer is transparent, qualified for the work, and willing to stand behind the completed return. Ask for the preparer’s name, business address, relevant credentials, applicable license information, and any disciplinary history you can verify. Credentials and licensing requirements vary by role and jurisdiction, so confirm what applies to the service being offered.

Questions a responsible preparer should answer
- What exact credit are you considering, and which tax year does it cover?
- Which eligibility requirements do you believe I meet?
- What documents support each requirement?
- How did you calculate the amount, and what assumptions did you use?
- What is the total fee, when is it due, and is any part tied to my refund?
- Will you sign the return and include your valid PTIN?
- When and how will I receive a complete copy of the filed return and supporting schedules?
A preparer should ask about your income and documentation instead of telling you what to claim before reviewing your facts. Be wary of anyone who says a credit is available without asking basic questions, discourages you from reading the return, or tells you that the IRS will never check.
Your responsibility remains after someone else prepares the return
You are responsible for the information filed under your name, even when a preparer suggested the claim. An unsupported credit can delay processing and may lead to repayment, penalties, interest, an audit, or other legal consequences. A preparer’s assurance does not transfer that responsibility. Keep copies of the return, worksheets, receipts, messages, and documents used to claim the credit.
Unsolicited messages and fake IRS contact
The IRS Tax Tip “Ways to tell if the IRS is reaching out or if it’s a scammer” (July 8, 2025) says the agency does not initiate contact through unsolicited email, text, or social-media messages. A message may contain official-looking logos, a case number, or a link that resembles an IRS address; those details do not authenticate it.
Do not use the message’s link or phone number to verify the claim. Open a new browser window, type IRS.gov yourself, and locate the relevant guidance or contact instructions there. Do not disclose an IRS verification code to a caller or message sender. If the communication concerns a tax account, use the contact route published on IRS.gov rather than a route supplied in the message.

Why a “faster refund” fee is not legitimate
Refund timing depends on the filing, IRS processing, required reviews, and any legal hold or offset. A private person cannot move your return ahead of the IRS queue by collecting a fee. The IRS states: “No individual or business can speed up an IRS refund for a fee.”
Similarly, the IRS states: “The IRS does not require ‘enrollment’ or payment to claim a deduction.” Although that sentence refers to a deduction, the same caution applies when a promoter says a payment is required to unlock a claimed tax benefit. A fee may pay for genuine preparation or advisory work, but it does not purchase eligibility, IRS approval, or a guaranteed release of money.
What to do if you already paid or shared information
Preserve evidence and stop further contact
Save receipts, payment confirmations, contracts, screenshots, messages, call records, names, account numbers, and copies of anything you sent. Do not send an additional “verification” payment or provide more documents to recover the first payment. Block the sender only after preserving the evidence you may need for reporting or disputes.

Use the IRS’s current reporting instructions
Go to the IRS tax-scams guidance and follow the reporting route that matches the facts: a phishing message, an attempted identity theft, a false return, or misconduct by a paid preparer. The appropriate form or contact method can depend on what happened, so use the current instructions rather than a generic address found in the original solicitation.

Address a preparer’s misconduct separately
If a paid preparer filed a return you did not authorize, inserted a credit without support, refused to sign, or otherwise acted improperly, follow IRS instructions for making a preparer complaint. Keep the complete return and all communications. Do not assume that reporting the preparer automatically corrects your tax account; you may need to respond to IRS notices or amend a return based on your circumstances.
Protect accounts and payment methods
If you disclosed account credentials, an IRS verification code, or financial information, change affected passwords from a trusted device and contact the relevant financial institution or service provider through its official channel. Ask what protective steps are available for the specific account or payment. If you paid by card or electronic transfer, ask the provider about its dispute or fraud process. No single report guarantees that a payment will be reversed or that identity misuse will be prevented; outcomes depend on the recipient institution and the facts.
A practical decision rule
- Identify. Write down the exact credit name, tax year, promoter, requested information, and requested payment.
- Verify. Find the credit on IRS.gov and, where available, use the Interactive Tax Assistant.
- Document. Match every requirement with your own records and note anything missing.
- Evaluate the person. Confirm a paid preparer’s credentials, applicable licensing, willingness to explain the calculation, PTIN, signature, and complete-copy policy.
- Reject pressure. Do not proceed if the pitch relies on urgency, secrecy, guaranteed amounts, “pre-approval,” sensitive-data collection, or an activation or expedited-refund fee.
- Review before signing. Read the entire return and retain a copy. If any entry is unexplained, stop and obtain independent advice.
The IRS Tax Tip “Be informed, not fooled by ghost preparers and tax credit scams” (Tax Tip 2026-27, April 1, 2026) states: “Taxpayers should never sign a blank or incomplete return.” That simple rule prevents a promoter from turning your signature into permission for claims you have not reviewed.

This guidance concerns federal tax credits and IRS processes. States may offer different credits, use different eligibility tests, regulate preparers differently, and provide separate consumer-protection or tax-fraud reporting channels. For a state-specific offer, verify the credit with your state tax agency and check the state’s preparer and complaint rules in addition to the federal review above.
The safe stopping point
If you cannot confirm the exact credit in current official guidance, cannot document its requirements, or are being asked to pay for access, stop before sharing information or signing anything. A legitimate tax benefit can withstand independent verification; a fake one depends on speed, secrecy, pressure, or an unsupported promise.
