1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSize a home backup system in two separate ways: estimate the energy your essential appliances will use during the outage (in kWh) to size the battery, then estimate the power they may draw at the same time (in watts) to size the inverter. Check battery usable capacity, startup surges, solar availability and installation requirements before choosing equipment. Without your appliance list, outage target, product specifications and location, there is no responsible one-size-fits-all capacity.
How many kWh of battery do you need for a power cut?
Start with the loads you actually need backed up and how long you expect to use each one. A monthly electricity bill does not show which appliances will run during an outage or for how many hours.

Build a critical-load list
For each appliance or backed-up circuit, record its rated watts or measured power and the hours you expect to use it during the outage. Do not assume that every appliance runs continuously. A refrigerator, for example, cycles rather than drawing its rated power every minute, so use a reasonable estimate of its operating energy if you have one.

Calculate the planned energy use
Multiply each load’s watts by its expected hours of use, then add the results. Divide the total watt-hours by 1,000 to convert to kilowatt-hours (kWh).

| Load | Power estimate | Expected outage use | Energy estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appliance or circuit | Watts | Hours | Watts × hours = watt-hours |
| All planned loads | — | — | Add the watt-hours, then divide by 1,000 for kWh |
This is the energy the loads require before accounting for battery discharge limits and conversion losses. The U.S. Department of Energy’s older residential solar-battery fact sheet gives a rounded example: 1,000 watt-hours (1 kWh) per day on a 24-volt battery bank corresponds to 42 amp-hours of useful storage. It is an arithmetic illustration, not a complete battery recommendation; the sheet also cautions that lead-acid batteries cannot be fully discharged. DOE, Battery Power for Your Residential Solar Electric System.
Compare the estimate with usable battery energy
Do not treat a battery’s advertised nominal capacity as fully available energy. Check its stated usable capacity and the manufacturer’s permitted depth of discharge, and allow for inverter and other conversion losses. The adjustment depends on the battery chemistry and the specific product; follow its manual rather than applying a generic percentage.

Match the battery’s DC voltage to the inverter’s required input voltage, and confirm that the two products are compatible. DOE’s residential fact sheet describes 12-, 24- and 48-volt battery configurations as choices shaped by the inverter input, battery type and required storage; it does not establish one voltage as right for every home. DOE, Battery Power for Your Residential Solar Electric System.
What size inverter do you need for your home?
The inverter’s continuous output must cover the combined power of the loads that may operate at once. Add those simultaneous loads using appliance nameplate ratings or reliable measurements; do not add every item on the critical-load list if some will not run together.

Check startup demand as well as running demand
Motors and compressors can require more power to start than to keep running. Check appliance specifications and the inverter’s continuous and surge ratings to confirm that the inverter can handle both the expected running load and startup needs. There is no universal surge multiplier supported here, so do not size by applying a blanket rule to the total.
Battery energy and inverter power solve different problems: the battery’s usable kWh affects how long selected loads can run, while the inverter’s output in watts or kilowatts affects which combination can run at one time. A large battery does not compensate for an inverter that cannot start a high-surge appliance; a powerful inverter does not provide long runtime if usable stored energy is small. DOE explains the distinction between energy capacity and power capacity in its overview of solar energy and storage. DOE, Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics.

How long will a home battery last during an outage?
As a first estimate, divide the energy available for the loads by their energy use per hour. Actual runtime will differ if appliance use changes, the system loses energy in conversion, the battery has a discharge limit, or solar adds energy while the grid is down. Start the estimate with the energy available when the outage begins, not just the battery’s nameplate capacity.
DOE and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory identify stored energy at outage start, the level of critical loads and PV availability as factors affecting how long a PV-and-storage system can power those loads. Their 2018 report simulated 8,760 outage start times—one at each hour of the year—and modeled outages of approximately two hours. Those are study-method details, not a forecast of how long your own outage will last. DOE/NREL, Valuing the Resilience Provided by Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems.

Will solar panels work when the grid goes down?
Do not assume a grid-tied solar array will keep powering the house during an outage. Standard grid-tied systems generally shut down when the grid is lost; operating solar during an outage requires equipment configured to isolate from the grid and provide backup, typically with suitable inverter and storage capability. DOE states: “For solar panels to produce power on their own, they need two things: a properly configured inverter and a storage system.” DOE, Solar and Resilience Basics.
If solar is part of the outage plan, estimate production for your location and the relevant season and time of day. Output varies with weather, shading and sunlight, so do not count on the same contribution at every hour. DOE’s 2024 guide for tribal facilities illustrates a workflow combining hourly meter data with location-specific PVWatts estimates; its HomeGrid 8-stack example is 38.4 kWh and discusses 3-hour and 8-hour outage scenarios. That is a project-specific example, not a recommended household battery size. DOE, Creating Energy – Resilient Tribal Facilities with Distributed Energy Resources.
What else must be checked before installing backup power?
Whole-home backup is a system design, not simply a battery-size choice. Panel capacity, wiring, grid isolation or transfer equipment, utility requirements and local building, fire and electrical rules can affect what can be installed and which loads can be backed up. Requirements vary by location; confirm them with the utility and a qualified local solar-and-storage installer or licensed electrical contractor before buying equipment or arranging installation. DOE’s resilience guidance explains the role of appropriately configured solar and storage for backup. DOE, Solar and Resilience Basics.

A practical checklist for choosing a system
- List the critical appliances and circuits, their power draw and expected hours of use.
- Calculate outage energy in kWh and compare it with the battery’s usable—not merely nominal—capacity.
- Add the loads that may run together and check inverter continuous output and appliance startup requirements.
- Verify DC voltage, battery chemistry and documented inverter-battery compatibility against both manuals.
- Estimate solar contribution for the location, season and outage hours if solar recharge is part of the plan.
- Confirm backup/islanding capability and local panel, wiring, utility and code requirements.
