There is no single UPI setting that lets every user choose one network-wide daily or per-payment ceiling. The limit you encounter is usually the lowest applicable cap from NPCI rules, your issuing bank and account, the app or payment method, and any feature such as UPI Lite or UPI Circle. First identify what you need to control—one payment, a recurring mandate, a collect request, or another person’s access—then use the bank or UPI app that actually handles that function.
Identify the permission or limit you want to change
“UPI limit” can describe several unrelated controls. Choosing the wrong menu will not solve the problem, so classify the issue before changing anything.

- One-time payment amount: a cap on a single transfer, often enforced by the bank, payment method or transaction category.
- Daily or monthly spending: an issuer or app risk limit. Many users can view it but cannot edit it themselves.
- Recurring debit: a UPI AutoPay mandate that authorizes a merchant to collect according to agreed rules.
- Collect request: a request from another UPI user that you may approve or decline; receiving a request does not authorize payment by itself.
- Delegated access: UPI Circle authority given by a primary account holder to a secondary user under separate feature limits.
- Small-value wallet payments: UPI Lite has its own stored-balance, per-payment and daily-spend ceilings, separate from ordinary bank-account UPI.
A payment can be declined even when it appears below a general NPCI ceiling. The bank may apply a lower account limit, a temporary risk restriction, a category-specific rule or a payment-method limit. Conversely, changing an app preference cannot override a bank or network cap.

#1 Best Overall
1. NPCI and transaction-category caps
NPCI’s UPI FAQ lists a normal limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, up to ₹2 lakh for some listed categories, and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. These are network-level figures, not a promise that every bank account or app will permit the maximum. The FAQ’s publication date is not stated; the figures were verified on October 13, 2026, and should be checked against the current NPCI FAQ before relying on them.
2. Issuing-bank and account rules
Your bank can set lower per-transaction, daily or monthly limits, apply cooling-off periods after registration or a PIN change, and block particular transaction types. The same UPI app can therefore show different results for two bank accounts. A credit-card-linked UPI payment can also have rules different from a bank-account transfer.
3. App and payment-method rules
The app may impose its own risk, velocity or method-specific controls. Google Pay states that limits vary by bank account, credit card and other payment methods and provides a bank-wise limit table in its help material. Use the entry for the exact bank account or card you are using, not a generic number shown in a search result.
4. Feature-specific ceilings
UPI Lite and UPI Circle are not ordinary UPI transfers. Their balances, per-payment and time-period limits are defined separately and cannot be substituted for a bank account’s standard UPI allowance.

Can you set a personal UPI daily or per-transaction limit?
Sometimes, but there is no universal user-adjustable control. Many banks and apps expose only the limit they have assigned; others may offer a spending-control or account-security setting. Whether you can raise or lower it depends on the bank, account type, app, payment method, transaction category and current rules.
Use this process rather than assuming a menu exists:
- Record the exact payment method. Note the bank account or card selected, the UPI app, the transaction type and whether it is a normal transfer, bill payment, merchant payment or investment payment.
- Open the app’s account or help area. Look for labels such as “UPI limits,” “bank account,” “payment limits,” “security,” or “transaction settings.” Labels differ by app version and operating system.
- Check the linked bank’s official channel. Review the bank’s UPI FAQ, internet-banking settings or mobile-banking help for the account-specific cap. If the app says the bank controls the limit, the bank is the correct place to ask.
- Compare the displayed limit with the attempted amount. Check whether the amount is per transaction, per day, per month or a one-time allowance. Do not treat a daily figure as a per-payment figure.
- Ask support whether the limit is editable. Request the applicable cap and the reason for a decline, but do not expect support to raise a limit that is fixed by a network rule, product design or risk policy.
- Make a small verification payment only if needed. After a confirmed change, use an amount you can afford and verify the receipt, bank debit and updated limit status.
If a payment under the advertised ceiling fails, common explanations include a lower bank limit, a recently changed device or PIN, a temporary security block, a category rule, insufficient available balance, or a limit already consumed by earlier transactions. The failure does not prove that an app control can override the restriction.
UPI AutoPay: pause or cancel a recurring mandate
A recurring UPI debit is controlled by a mandate, not by the ordinary transfer limit. Canceling a subscription at the merchant and revoking the UPI debit authorization are separate actions; when you no longer want future debits, verify both.

Google Pay example
Google Pay’s documented path is:
- Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture.
- Select Autopay.
- Review pending requests and either approve or decline each one. A pending request has not yet become an active authorization.
- Open an active mandate to view its details and choose the available control to pause or cancel it.
- Reopen the mandate and confirm that its status changed to paused or canceled. Save the confirmation or reference number.
Google Pay says cancellation requires the linked bank account to be active. Loan-related mandates may require you to contact the merchant or lender instead of using an in-app cancellation control.
If the mandate was created in another app
HDFC Bank’s general guidance is to manage the mandate in the UPI app where it was created. Open that app’s mandates, AutoPay or recurring-payments area, select the relevant authorization and confirm the resulting status. Menu names and available actions vary, so use the provider’s current help page rather than copying steps from a different app.
When cancellation appears to fail
- Check whether the request is still pending approval, already executed, paused rather than canceled, or marked completed.
- Confirm that you selected the same bank account and merchant authorization used to create it.
- Cancel the merchant subscription separately if you no longer want the underlying service.
- For a loan or other restricted mandate, contact the merchant or lender and ask how its debit authorization must be closed.
- If the status does not update, contact the app and bank through their official support channels and provide the mandate reference, date and account details without sharing your UPI PIN.
UPI Circle: limit another person’s access without sharing your PIN
UPI Circle is delegated access, not a normal personal spending-limit slider. A primary user—the account holder—authorizes a secondary user to make payments under defined limits. Availability and controls depend on whether the participating app and bank support the feature.
| UPI Circle control | NPCI figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Per transaction | ₹5,000 | Per device; listed on NPCI’s current product page, verified October 13, 2026. |
| Monthly total | ₹15,000 | Per device; a feature limit, not the ordinary UPI bank-account cap. |
| First 24 hours after a new device is linked | ₹2,000 | Applies during the initial 24-hour period. |
| Secondary devices or software | Up to five | Maximum linked secondary devices or software listed by NPCI. |
PhonePe’s terms likewise state Full Delegation limits of ₹5,000 per transaction and ₹15,000 per month. These figures do not mean every app offers the same controls. To remove access, the primary user should open the app’s UPI Circle or delegated-access area, select the secondary user or device, revoke or remove the authorization, and confirm that the status is no longer active. The secondary user should then stop seeing the delegated account or payment option; if it remains visible, contact the provider.

Never give a secondary user your UPI PIN. Delegation is designed to grant bounded authority without disclosing the credential that authorizes transactions from your account.
UPI Lite has different limits
UPI Lite is an on-device wallet-style balance for small payments. NPCI’s product booklet lists:
| UPI Lite limit | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Stored balance | ₹2,000 | Maximum balance held in UPI Lite. |
| Per payment | ₹200 | Maximum for one UPI Lite payment. |
| Daily spend | ₹4,000 | Cumulative daily UPI Lite spending cap. |
The booklet’s figures were verified on October 13, 2026; confirm the current terms in your app before relying on them. NPCI’s March 16, 2022 circular documents the earlier ₹200 per-payment and ₹2,000 balance limits and is historical context, not a substitute for current product guidance. UPI Lite limits cannot be used to infer the limits for ordinary UPI bank-account transfers.
To stop UPI Lite use, look in the app’s UPI Lite or on-device-wallet section for an option to disable it or transfer out the balance. The exact labels and settlement behavior are provider-specific; read the confirmation screen and verify where any remaining balance goes.

Stopping unwanted payment requests and unauthorized access
Decline collect requests
A collect request is an invitation to approve a payment. Review the requester, amount and purpose before accepting. Decline requests you do not recognize, and do not enter your UPI PIN merely to “receive” money. Receiving money does not require you to authorize a debit.
Remove unknown mandates or delegates
Inspect the app’s Autopay, mandates and delegated-access sections. Cancel or revoke anything unfamiliar, then check the linked bank account for pending debits. If the app cannot identify the authorization, contact the bank immediately through its official number or in-app support.
Protect the UPI PIN
NPCI defines the UPI PIN as the 4-to-6-digit passcode created during first-time registration. It authorizes transactions and must not be shared with a caller, merchant, support agent or family member. Repeated incorrect entries may cause the bank to temporarily block sending through UPI, depending on the bank.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNPCI also states that a payment cannot be stopped once it has been initiated. If you approved a fraudulent payment, contact the bank and app immediately, report the transaction through official fraud channels and preserve the transaction ID. Do not wait for a limit change or mandate cancellation to reverse an already initiated debit.
Quick Recap
How to verify that a change worked
- Return to the same limits, Autopay, UPI Circle or UPI Lite screen after saving the change.
- Confirm the new status in plain language: active, paused, canceled, revoked, disabled or pending.
- Check the linked bank account’s transaction history and available balance for an unexpected debit or a reversal.
- Save the confirmation number, screenshot or notification, keeping your PIN and one-time passwords out of the record.
- If the status is missing or contradictory, contact the official app and bank support with the transaction or mandate reference.
What to do when a limit cannot be changed
- Displayed limit is lower than NPCI’s figure: ask the issuing bank which account or risk rule applies; the NPCI figure is only an upper network category cap.
- App has no edit button: treat the cap as provider-controlled unless the bank confirms a different security setting.
- Payment is declined below the limit: check the selected account, method, balance, daily usage, device status and any cooling-off period.
- Mandate has no cancel option: check whether it is loan-related or otherwise restricted, then contact the merchant, bank and app as appropriate.
- Delegated access remains after revocation: verify the primary user’s status, remove the secondary device where possible and ask provider support to synchronize the account.
- PIN attempts are blocked: stop guessing, follow the bank’s reset or unblocking process and never disclose the PIN to someone offering help.
Limits and permissions: a quick decision table
| Your goal | Where to look first | What controls the result |
|---|---|---|
| Lower or raise a one-time transfer amount | Selected bank account’s UPI or payment-limit information | NPCI category cap, bank policy, app and payment method |
| Stop recurring debits | UPI app where the mandate was created, usually its Autopay or mandates area | Mandate status, active bank account and merchant or loan rules |
| Prevent another person using your account | UPI Circle or delegated-access controls | Primary-user revocation and participating-app support |
| Restrict small offline-style payments | UPI Lite settings | Separate balance, per-payment and daily caps |
| Reject an unexpected debit request | Pending collect request screen | Your approval; never enter the PIN for an unrecognized request |
Key takeaways for safer UPI control
- There is no universal personal UPI-limit menu; the bank and payment method may impose the effective cap.
- NPCI’s cited standard ceilings are upper transaction-category limits, not guaranteed allowances for every user.
- AutoPay mandates, UPI Circle delegation and UPI Lite each require their own controls.
- Revoke access and verify the resulting status; do not assume that uninstalling an app canceled a mandate.
- Keep the UPI PIN private, and contact the official bank or app channel for account-specific limits or failed cancellations.
