UPI does not have one personal limit setting that works the same way for every user. NPCI sets category-level ceilings, banks can apply lower internal limits, and your bank account and app must be eligible for the payment. Check your UPI app’s account or payment controls and your bank’s official guidance; exact settings and menu names vary.
How UPI transaction limits work
A payment limit can come from several layers. NPCI’s published ceiling is not a promise that every account can send that amount: your bank may set a lower limit, and the transaction category, merchant verification, account, and app can affect eligibility.

- NPCI ceiling: NPCI’s FAQ gives normal UPI transfers a ceiling of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. It lists up to ₹2 lakh for specified categories, including capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances, and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments. The FAQ does not state a publication date.
- Category-specific tax ceiling: In a circular dated 28 August 2025, NPCI raised the per-transaction limit for tax-payment-aligned categories to ₹5 lakh for verified merchants. The circular says banks may set internal limits within NPCI ceilings; it also says P2P limits remain under existing guidelines.
- Bank and account controls: Your bank may impose a lower limit or other restrictions. App and account eligibility also matter, so a published NPCI ceiling may not be available for your particular payment.
For the category ceilings and PIN guidance, see NPCI’s UPI FAQ. For the tax-payment rule and bank discretion, see NPCI’s 28 August 2025 circular.

There is no verified sequence of menu taps that applies across all UPI apps and banks, and the available material does not establish that every user can manually raise a personal limit in an app. Start with your specific bank and app rather than assuming an NPCI ceiling is an editable setting.
#1 Best Overall
- It not only supports Mifare cards and Class A and B cards conforming to the ISO 14443 standard, but also supports NFC and FeliCa contactless technology.
- This is a USB hot-pluggable device that complies with the CCID standard and is ideal for applications such as personal identity security authentication and online micropayments.
- This is a USB full-speed device (12 Mbps), which reads NFC tags at 106 kbps、212 Kbps and 242 Kbps, allowing faster read and write speeds and higher efficiency
- To increase the safety factor, you can choose to configure an ISO7816-3 compliant SAM card slot in the ACR122.
- Widely used in areas such as access control, electronic payment, bus e-ticketing, highway toll collection systems, network verification, logistics, and supply chain management.
- Open the UPI app you use and look for linked bank accounts, payment management, or account settings. Check whether it shows a limit or restriction for the account or payment type.
- Check your bank’s official app, help pages, or support for its UPI limits and any account-specific restrictions. Ask whether the restriction is bank-set and whether it can be changed.
- If a payment is above the applicable category ceiling, or the account or merchant is not eligible, changing a bank-level setting will not necessarily make it go through. Confirm the category, merchant eligibility, and current bank guidance before retrying.
Do not treat the ₹5 lakh tax-payment ceiling as a general UPI limit: NPCI’s 2025 circular applies it to the specified tax-payment-aligned categories and verified merchants.
How can I stop UPI payments from my account?
First identify which permission you want to stop. Removing an app’s link to a bank account, cancelling a recurring AutoPay mandate, and withdrawing another person’s delegated authority are different actions. One does not automatically revoke the others.

Remove or manage a linked bank account
Open the app’s bank-account management area to inspect which accounts are linked and what controls it offers. If you want to change a bank-level restriction, use the bank’s official instructions or contact the bank. Menu labels and account-removal options are not established as identical across providers, so check the app you actually use.
Pause or revoke an AutoPay mandate
AutoPay is a recurring payment permission, not a general transaction limit. NPCI’s circular dated 7 October 2025 places mandate lifecycle controls in “Manage Bank accounts” or a dedicated “UPI Autopay” section. It lists viewing and porting active mandates as well as revoke, pause, and modify operations. Availability and labels can differ by participating app; check the mandate’s status after using the control. See NPCI’s 7 October 2025 AutoPay circular.

Review delegated payment access
Delegated payment lets a secondary user make payments from a primary user’s bank account under a separate authorization. The Reserve Bank of India described the model as allowing a primary user to set a UPI transaction limit for a secondary user. In BHIM UPI Circle Full Delegation, NPCI BHIM Services Limited announced a primary-user-set monthly spending limit of up to ₹15,000 and an expiry period of up to five years in November 2025. Those are BHIM feature terms, not universal UPI ceilings. Check the app’s delegation controls to review or end access. See the RBI policy announcement and BHIM’s UPI Circle announcement.

The UPI PIN authorizes bank transactions. NPCI says not to share it with anyone. If your phone is lost, contact your bank promptly. Repeated incorrect PIN entries may temporarily block sending money, depending on the bank; follow that bank’s instructions if this happens. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ.
