Medicare Easy Pay lets Medicare pull your premium automatically from a checking or savings account. To enroll online, sign in to your secure Medicare account, open My Premiums, select Sign Up, enter the requested bank information, and submit. You can also complete and mail the Authorization Agreement for Pre-authorized Payments (SF-5510) in English or Spanish.
Allow up to 6–8 weeks for the first deduction. Keep paying your premium another way until Easy Pay is active and you have confirmed the first withdrawal. After activation, Medicare generally sends a statement around the 10th and deducts the stated amount on the 20th or the next business day.

What Medicare Easy Pay does
Medicare Easy Pay is Medicare’s free recurring-payment service for Medicare premiums. It authorizes Medicare to withdraw the amount due from a checking or savings account on a recurring schedule, so you do not have to initiate each payment manually.
Recommended Free Tools
The service is primarily useful for people who receive a Medicare Premium Bill rather than having premiums withheld from Social Security, the Railroad Retirement Board, or the Office of Personnel Management. Easy Pay concerns premium payments; it does not pay deductibles, coinsurance, prescription costs, or other medical bills.

Who may not need Easy Pay
If your Part B premium is already withheld from a Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board, or Office of Personnel Management benefit, you generally do not receive a separate premium bill for that amount. Easy Pay is designed for people who need to pay Medicare directly. Check your benefit statement or Medicare bill before setting up a second payment arrangement so you do not accidentally pay the same premium twice.
Why the automatic amount matters
Medicare can change premiums from year to year. Easy Pay adjusts the withdrawal when your premium changes. A recurring amount entered in a bank’s bill-pay system generally does not update automatically, so a fixed bank payment can become too small after a premium increase.
What it costs
Medicare describes Easy Pay as free. Your bank could separately impose account fees or overdraft charges under its own terms, so the account must have enough available funds when the withdrawal is scheduled. Medicare does not charge a separate Easy Pay enrollment fee.
Before you enroll
Have the information and access needed to complete the authorization without interrupting the process.
- A secure Medicare account, if you are enrolling online.
- The checking or savings account information requested in the enrollment form.
- Your current Medicare premium bill, so you can continue paying while enrollment is processed.
- A way to monitor the account around the expected withdrawal date.
- A safe place to retain the confirmation, submitted form, statements, and bank records.
In 2026, the standard Part B premium is $202.90 per month, according to Medicare.gov. Higher income-related amounts may apply, and premiums can change annually. The amount shown on your Medicare statement, rather than the standard figure, is the amount Easy Pay is intended to collect. If your income-related adjustment changes or another premium change appears, rely on the new statement instead of assuming the old amount remains correct.
Set up Easy Pay online
- Sign in or create your secure Medicare account. Use Medicare’s secure account sign-in rather than entering bank details through an unsolicited message or call.
- Open My Premiums. This is the account area for viewing and managing premium payments.
- Select Sign Up for Medicare Easy Pay. Follow the enrollment prompts.
- Enter the requested checking or savings account information. Review every digit before submitting; an incorrect account number can prevent the authorization from working.
- Submit the authorization. Save or note any confirmation shown by the account.
- Continue paying current bills another way. Online enrollment does not mean the next bill will necessarily be drafted. Medicare says startup can take up to 6–8 weeks.
- Wait for an Easy Pay statement and first confirmed deduction. Once the statement and withdrawal match, you can stop making the separate payment for that billing cycle.
What to check after submitting
- Keep your bank account funded for the expected withdrawal.
- Watch for the Medicare statement that normally arrives on or about the 10th.
- Check the account on or after the 20th, or the next business day, for the scheduled deduction.
- Compare the statement amount with the amount that actually posts.
- Retain the statement and bank record until the payment has cleared.
Do not treat a confirmation screen alone as proof that the first payment has been taken. Activation and the first debit are separate events. The safest transition is to keep your existing payment method until you can match a statement to a cleared bank transaction.
Enroll, stop, or change Easy Pay by mail
Use Medicare’s Authorization Agreement for Pre-authorized Payments (SF-5510) to start recurring deductions, stop them, or change the bank account. Medicare provides English and Spanish versions.

- Obtain the current SF-5510 form in your preferred language.
- Complete the requested personal, Medicare, and bank-account fields exactly as instructed.
- Choose the action you need: begin authorization, change the account, or stop recurring payments.
- Sign and date the form.
- Mail it using the address and instructions printed on the form.
- Continue paying premiums separately until you receive confirmation and see the expected transaction.
A mailed form does not eliminate the processing window. A new-account authorization can take 6–8 weeks to begin deductions. If you cancel, deductions can take up to four weeks to stop, so continue checking statements during that period. Keep a copy of the completed form and note the date you mailed it; that record helps Medicare locate the request if the change is not reflected when expected.
Understand the monthly Easy Pay schedule
| Event | Typical timing | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Easy Pay statement (CMS-20143) | On or about the 10th of the month | Read the amount Medicare plans to withdraw and compare it with your records. |
| Automatic deduction | Generally the 20th or the next business day | Keep sufficient funds available and check that the transaction posts. |
| New enrollment or bank-account change | Up to 6–8 weeks before deductions begin | Pay bills through another method until activation is confirmed. |
| Cancellation | Up to four weeks before deductions stop | Continue monitoring statements and make any payment still due. |
The dates are general timing, not a guarantee that every account will post on the same day. A statement can show the amount before the bank transaction appears, and a weekend or holiday can move the deduction to the next business day.
For example, if a statement arrives around the 10th showing a revised premium, plan for that full amount to leave the account around the 20th. If the 20th is not a business day, check for the debit on the next business day rather than submitting an immediate duplicate payment.
How to avoid a missed or returned payment
Fund the account for the full statement amount
Review the CMS-20143 statement and leave enough available money for the full amount, not merely the prior month’s figure. Premium changes can make an old amount inaccurate. Also account for any other withdrawals scheduled against the same checking or savings account; a positive balance that is already committed to another payment may not be available for Easy Pay.

Do not cancel your backup payment too soon
During the 6–8-week startup window, use your existing payment method. Keep doing so until Medicare has issued an Easy Pay statement and the first withdrawal has cleared. If you pay manually during this transition, record the date and amount so you can distinguish that payment from a later automatic debit.
Check for bank-account changes
If you close the account, switch banks, or replace the account used for Easy Pay, submit the change through My Premiums or SF-5510. Treat the new authorization as a new processing cycle and continue paying separately until it is active. Do not assume that giving your bank a new account number will update Medicare’s authorization.
Protect your account information
Enter bank details only through your secure Medicare account or the official SF-5510 process. Do not send routing or account numbers in response to an unsolicited email or phone call. If someone else helps you complete the form, review the final account information yourself and retain a copy.

What happens when a payment fails
If an Easy Pay withdrawal is returned or declined, Medicare sends an explanatory letter and, in the following month, a Medicare Premium Bill identified as CMS-500. Do not assume the failed draft will simply be tried again.
- Read the letter and CMS-500 to identify the total balance due.
- Pay the full amount by another accepted method.
- Keep records of the payment and confirmation.
- Monitor later statements to verify that Easy Pay resumes after the balance is paid.
Until the returned balance is resolved, the automatic schedule should not be treated as proof that you are current. A CMS-500 payment generally must reach Medicare by its due date, usually the 25th. Late payment can put coverage at risk. If the account was closed or the bank rejected the transaction, correct that problem before relying on a later automatic debit.
If you cannot tell whether the payment posted
Compare the CMS-20143 statement, your bank transaction history, and any CMS-500 bill. If the records do not reconcile, contact Medicare before sending duplicate payments. For help with Easy Pay, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227); TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.
Change the bank account or stop deductions
Changing accounts
Use the change function in My Premiums or submit a new SF-5510. A change is not instantaneous: Medicare says deductions from a new account can take up to 6–8 weeks to begin. Leave the old payment arrangement in place as needed and pay each bill by another method until the new account is confirmed. If the old account is being closed, make sure payments are covered through another method before the closure date.
Stopping Easy Pay
Request cancellation online or through SF-5510. Medicare says stopping deductions can take up to four weeks. Review every statement during that period and make any payment that remains due, even if you have asked for cancellation. A stop request does not erase a premium already shown as due.
Compare Easy Pay with other payment methods
| Method | Does the amount update automatically? | Speed and timing | Recurring authorization | Statement visibility | Main payment risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medicare Easy Pay | Yes, Medicare adjusts the withdrawal when the premium changes. | Up to 6–8 weeks to start; usually drafts on the 20th or next business day. | Yes, through an online authorization or SF-5510. | CMS-20143 generally arrives around the 10th. | Insufficient funds, a closed account, or an unprocessed change can cause a returned payment. |
| One-time online payment | Not applicable; you enter the amount for that bill. | Useful when an urgent bill must be paid without waiting for Easy Pay activation. | No. | You use the payment confirmation and bill rather than a recurring draft. | Forgetting a later bill or entering the wrong amount. |
| Bank bill pay | Generally no; a recurring bank amount may remain fixed after Medicare changes the premium. | Bank processing is generally about five business days; mailed bank checks can take longer. | Usually, if you schedule recurring payments. | Your bank provides the payment record; Medicare still sends its bill. | Bank fees, processing delays, an outdated amount, or a payment that arrives after the due date. |
| Payment by mailed check | No. | Slower than electronic methods because delivery and processing take time. | No. | Keep the bill and cleared-check record. | Mail delays or a check that reaches Medicare after the due date. |
Using bank bill pay correctly
If you choose your bank’s bill-pay service, use your 11-character Medicare Number and the payee name CMS Medicare Insurance. Allow about five business days for bank processing, and more time when the bank mails a paper check. Confirm whether your bank charges a fee and whether a recurring instruction will change when Medicare raises the premium. A bank-generated check may not arrive as quickly as an electronic transfer, so schedule it early enough to reach Medicare by the due date.
When a one-time payment is the better choice
A one-time online payment can be practical for an urgent CMS-500 bill or while Easy Pay is still activating. It does not replace the need to track future statements unless you continue making each payment manually. Use the exact amount shown as due and save the confirmation until Medicare reflects the payment.

Keep your coverage payment records organized
Maintain a simple record containing the month, statement amount, payment method, date submitted, confirmation number or bank transaction, and date cleared. This is especially useful during enrollment, an account change, or a returned payment, when two payment methods may overlap temporarily.
- Save each CMS-20143 statement until the corresponding withdrawal clears.
- Keep CMS-500 bills and proof of payment until the balance is reflected as paid.
- Note the date you submitted a new or changed authorization.
- Check that the account used for Easy Pay remains open and funded.
- Reconcile the statement amount with the bank transaction each month.
Help with premiums if money is tight
Medicare says people with limited income and resources may qualify for state assistance with Part A and Part B premiums and other Medicare costs. Eligibility and application procedures depend on the state. Contact Medicare or your state Medicaid or State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) resources for official guidance rather than assuming Easy Pay changes eligibility for assistance. Easy Pay is only a payment method; enrolling in it does not reduce the premium or determine whether you qualify for assistance.
