What VA direct deposit does
Direct deposit sends your VA disability compensation electronically to a bank account instead of mailing a paper check. The Department of Veterans Affairs describes the benefit this way: “When you sign up for direct deposit, we transfer money electronically to your bank account.” VA also says electronic delivery avoids waiting for a mailed check to arrive and makes the funds available in the account right away. That is a general explanation of the delivery method, not a promise of a particular payment date or processing time for a new account.

This guide is limited to VA disability compensation. VA.gov can support direct-deposit updates for disability compensation and some other benefits, but not every VA payment uses the same system. Travel reimbursement, caregiver stipends, copay refunds and life-insurance benefits may have separate payment instructions. If the payment you are changing is not disability compensation, use the instructions for that specific program rather than assuming the profile screen applies.

The steps below follow the current VA instructions and identify the alternatives VA lists when online access is not workable.

Information and access you need before starting
Gather the details before opening the form. The online process asks for the information below; the instructions do not say that you must upload a paper check or a voided check for this profile update.
- Account type: identify whether the destination is a checking or savings account, using the choices presented by VA.
- Routing number: have the routing number supplied by your financial institution available.
- Account number: use the number for the account that should receive the compensation.
- Verified sign-in: you need a verified ID.me or Login.gov account to change direct-deposit information online. A basic, unverified sign-in will not satisfy VA’s stated requirement.
Have the account information in front of you rather than relying on memory. A single incorrect digit can direct a payment to the wrong destination or prevent the change from being accepted. If you are unsure which number belongs in a field, ask the financial institution that holds the account before saving the form.
Set up VA disability direct deposit online
The online route is the most direct option when you can sign in with a verified credential. Use VA.gov rather than a link from an unsolicited message, and complete the entire change in the profile’s direct-deposit section.

- Sign in to VA.gov. Use a verified ID.me or Login.gov account. VA says identity verification is required to change direct-deposit information.
- Open your profile. Select your name in the site navigation, then choose Profile.
- Open direct-deposit management. In the Direct deposit information section, select Manage your direct deposit information.
- Choose the benefit. Find Disability compensation in the list of benefits and select Edit.
- Enter the account details. Select the account type and enter the routing number and account number exactly as supplied by your financial institution.
- Save the change. Select Save and wait for the VA.gov confirmation that the information was submitted.
These labels are the path VA gives for the profile process. If your screen uses slightly different spacing or arrangement, look for the same section names rather than starting a second application elsewhere on the site.

How to change an existing direct-deposit account
The same profile flow handles a change from one bank account to another. Start with the new account’s type, routing number and account number, then sign in with the verified ID.me or Login.gov credential. From Profile, open Direct deposit information, select Manage your direct deposit information, find Disability compensation, choose Edit, replace the existing details and select Save.
Review every field before saving. The online instructions reviewed by VA do not specify how long a saved change takes to become effective, and they do not promise that it will apply to a particular payment cycle. Do not plan a bill payment around an assumed effective date. Keep access to the old account until you have confirmed that the change has taken effect through your own account records or by contacting VA if something appears wrong.
Alternative ways to update direct deposit
If you cannot complete the profile process, VA lists other routes. The choices differ by the kind of access you have, not by a published speed ranking. VA’s public guidance does not state processing times for these methods.

Using VA Form SF-1199a when you lack internet or phone access
VA says people without access to the internet or a phone can update direct deposit with the Direct Deposit Sign-Up Form, VA Form SF-1199a. This is a paper alternative to the VA.gov profile process. Use the form route when the access problem itself prevents online or telephone contact; do not assume that mailing a form is required for an ordinary online change.
Follow the form’s current completion and submission directions, and write the bank information exactly as it appears in your financial institution’s records. Because VA’s general guidance does not state a processing time for the form, keep your existing payment arrangements in mind while the request is being handled. If you need to know where or how to submit the form, use the contact information on VA’s direct-deposit resource rather than sending it to an address found on an unrelated website.
If you do not have a bank account
You cannot enter bank details you do not have. VA directs people who want electronic payments but lack a bank account to the Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP). VBBP lists Veteran-friendly banks and credit unions that may help an eligible person open or qualify for an account.

Contact a participating bank or credit union directly to ask about its account requirements, identification rules, fees and availability. Once you have an account, you can use its account type, routing number and account number in the VA.gov profile process, or provide them through one of VA’s alternative routes.

The profile workflow is designed for the benefits VA identifies on that screen, including disability compensation. Seeing a direct-deposit setting in your profile does not mean that every payment connected with VA will automatically move when you edit it.
VA specifically identifies travel reimbursement, caregiver stipends, copay refunds and life-insurance benefits as examples of payments or benefits that may be handled in separate systems. If you receive one of those payments, locate that program’s instructions and update its payment information separately. This prevents an assumption that a saved disability-compensation change also changes an unrelated payment.

When in doubt, describe the exact payment you are trying to redirect when contacting VA. “Disability compensation” and another VA payment program are not interchangeable labels, and using the wrong route can leave the intended payment unchanged.

Troubleshooting common blockers
The profile will not let you edit direct deposit
Check the sign-in requirement first. VA says a verified ID.me or Login.gov account is required to change direct-deposit information. If your account is not verified, complete the verification offered by that sign-in provider, then return to VA.gov and reopen your profile. If you cannot complete verification, use the phone, regional-office or SF-1199a option described in VA’s direct-deposit guidance.
You cannot find the disability-compensation entry
Confirm that you are in Profile, then in Direct deposit information, and that you selected Manage your direct deposit information. The benefit entry should be labeled Disability compensation. If the payment you are trying to change is travel reimbursement, a caregiver stipend, a copay refund or life-insurance benefit, it may belong to a different system rather than this screen.
You are unsure which bank numbers to enter
Stop before saving and ask your financial institution to identify the correct routing number, account number and account type. VA’s online instructions call for those three items. They do not list a voided check or paper check as a requirement for the profile process, so do not delay an online update searching for one unless VA or your financial institution separately asks for it.

You cannot use the internet or a phone
Use VA Form SF-1199a, the Direct Deposit Sign-Up Form, as VA’s listed option for that situation. The form route is specifically identified for people without internet or phone access.
You are outside the United States
Use VA’s separate international contact information rather than assuming the domestic instructions apply. The international route is identified on VA’s direct-deposit resource.
After you select Save
Record the date you submitted the change and the account you intended to use. VA’s published instructions do not provide a processing-time estimate or guarantee a particular payment cycle, so avoid treating the save confirmation as proof that the next scheduled payment will use the new account.
Monitor the account information and your VA payment records. If the change does not appear to have taken effect, or if a payment goes somewhere unexpected, contact VA through the channels on Direct deposit for your VA payments. Have the benefit name, the submission date and the corrected bank details available so the representative can identify whether the issue concerns disability compensation or a different VA payment program.
