Credit-card issuer alerts usually track account activity—payments, purchases, balances, statements and credit limits—not the date your points expire or a travel credit resets. The dependable setup is a two-layer system: turn on the issuer alerts that protect your account, then verify every reward and benefit deadline in its own dashboard and terms and place advance reminders in a calendar or tracker.
Do not wait for a last-minute notification. Alert delivery can be delayed, and each card or loyalty program can use different rules, time zones and qualifying-posting requirements.

What credit-card alerts cover—and what they usually do not
Alerts are configured per issuer account, generally through the bank’s signed-in website or mobile app. Common choices include a payment due or posted notice, purchase notifications, balance thresholds, statement availability and credit-limit activity. The exact menu and eligibility depend on the issuer and card.
Reviewed issuer guidance from Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo describes these account alerts but does not establish a universal notification for expiring rewards or benefit deadlines. Some cards may show benefit or earnings information in a dashboard, but that is not the same as a guaranteed expiration alert. Check your own account rather than assuming a feature exists.

Chase describes notifications as a way to manage an account, avoid fees and track spending. Wells Fargo notes that non-urgent alerts may be processed from merchant information overnight, so the message can arrive on the next business day. Those timing limits make an independent deadline reminder essential.
Think of an issuer alert as an event notification, not a deadline-management system. A purchase alert can tell you that a transaction occurred, but it may not tell you whether the transaction qualifies for a statement credit or whether the credit has posted. Likewise, a balance alert can protect your account while saying nothing about a separate airline, hotel or bank-points account. Keep both functions enabled, but do not substitute one for the other.
Build a complete inventory before turning anything on
Start with a list that separates the credit-card account from any rewards or loyalty account connected to it. A single card can earn a bank currency, an airline or hotel currency, and statement credits governed by different terms.

- Issuer: the bank that sends statements and account alerts.
- Card name and last four digits: enough to identify the account without putting the full number in a notes file.
- Rewards program: the account where points, miles or cash-back units are recorded.
- Benefit: each credit, pass, coupon, insurance window or promotional offer with a use-by date.
- Source of truth: the dashboard, statement or current terms where you confirmed the date.
- Action required: redeem, enroll, make a qualifying purchase, activate a benefit or simply verify that a credit posted.
Include old cards that still hold a balance of points, authorized-user cards with separate benefits, and loyalty accounts that are not displayed inside the bank’s app. An issuer’s alert page does not automatically manage a partner program’s expiration calendar.
Give each entry a status such as “date verified,” “action pending” or “completed.” That small distinction prevents a common mistake: treating a reminder to make a purchase as proof that the resulting credit or points have already appeared. If several cards share one loyalty account, record the account once but note every card that can change its balance or benefit eligibility.
Turn on the issuer alerts that protect the account
Chase example
- Sign in to the Chase mobile app.
- Tap the person icon.
- Choose Alerts & messages, then Manage alerts.
- On chase.com, sign in, open the person icon, select Profile & settings, and choose Alerts.
- Select useful payment, purchase, balance, statement and credit-limit notices, then verify the delivery channel and contact details.
Chase says available alerts depend on the account. A United card rewards dashboard may also show recent purchases, MileagePlus earnings and card benefits; use that dashboard to inspect information, but do not treat its presence as proof that an expiration message will be sent.
Citi example
Citi says select cardmembers can customize alerts for statement availability, payment reminders, balance levels and credit-limit events. The notices can be delivered by email or mobile phone. Sign in, open the card’s alerts or notifications settings, and record which channels you enabled. Eligibility and labels can differ by account.

- Enroll and verify the mobile number if you want text alerts.
- Open Manage Alerts after signing in.
- Select the optional payment, purchase, balance or statement alerts that fit your routine.
- Allow one to two business days for alerts to begin after setup.
Wells Fargo says timing varies by alert type and that some non-urgent notices may arrive the following business day. If a message seems late or missing, check the account’s Message Center and confirm that the contact information is current.

Other issuers
Look for Alerts, Notifications, Account settings or a bell icon after signing in. Enable at least a payment-due notice and a purchase notice, then add balance and statement alerts if they help you avoid fees or monitor fraud. Save the date you changed the settings so you know when a delayed enrollment should have become active.
Choose a delivery channel you actually monitor. Email is easy to archive with the account record; text can be more immediate; push notifications depend on phone permissions. If an issuer allows more than one channel, using a primary and backup channel can reduce the chance that a blocked number, spam filter or disabled app permission hides an important account notice.
Verify the actual reward-expiration rule
Never infer a deadline from the date you earned points or from a generic blog post. Open the rewards dashboard, the latest statement and the current program terms. Record the rule in the same words the program uses:
- Does the clock start on the transaction date, the posting date or the calendar month in which points post?
- Does any account activity extend the life of the balance, or is the expiration fixed?
- Are different point types governed by different terms?
- Is the date shown in your account adjusted for a specific time zone?
- Must a redemption be submitted by the deadline, or must a qualifying purchase post by then?
A published Central Bank rewards program illustrates why this verification matters. Its account summary displays expiring points and expiration dates, and its terms say points remain available for five years from the calendar month in which they were posted, expiring at the end of that month. That is a rule for that particular program—not a general rule for credit-card rewards.
Take a screenshot or export of the displayed date when the program permits it, and note the date you checked. Terms can change; a dated record makes a later discrepancy easier to investigate.
Do not assume that a card’s rewards currency and a partner loyalty currency use the same clock. A bank dashboard may show the amount earned while the partner account controls the expiration, transfer or redemption conditions. If the dashboard and terms appear inconsistent, save both views and ask the issuer or program administrator which date governs before taking action.
Check every benefit’s reset and use-by condition
Benefits are often more complicated than points because the deadline may depend on a billing cycle, a calendar period or an activation step. For each benefit, answer these questions before creating the reminder:
Recommended Free Tools
- Period: does it reset monthly, quarterly, annually, on the card anniversary or only once for a promotion?
- Eligibility: must you enroll, activate, register a trip or use a particular merchant?
- Posting: must the qualifying purchase post by the deadline rather than merely occur that day?
- Redemption: is the credit automatic, or must you claim a code, transfer or reservation?
- Time zone: which local time controls the cutoff?
- Unused value: does the benefit roll over, disappear, or return after a cancellation?
The terms for your card control these answers. No universal reset schedule or posting rule applies to every card, so write the exact condition beside the date instead of using a vague note such as “use travel credit soon.”

Separate “use by” from “post by” in your tracker. For example, a purchase may be made before midnight but post later, or a reservation may be booked before a deadline while the benefit requires travel during a defined period. If the terms do not explain an edge case, do not guess; contact the issuer while there is still time to change the transaction.
Create reminders with enough lead time to act
A standard digital calendar is sufficient for a manual system. Create one event for the action window and, if useful, a second event closer to the cutoff. Put the card identifier, benefit or reward name, exact deadline, required action and source location in the event notes.
- Choose a lead time based on the action’s difficulty. A simple redemption may need days; a travel booking, transfer or qualifying purchase may need weeks.
- Set the event for the governing time zone and include the local cutoff in the title.
- Add a second reminder before the deadline if a missed notification would be costly.
- Attach or reference the statement, dashboard or terms page you used to verify the date.
- After acting, mark the event complete only when the reward, credit or qualifying transaction appears in the account.
For recurring benefits, create a repeating event only after confirming that the reset is genuinely regular. A recurring calendar entry can become misleading when an issuer changes a benefit or when an anniversary date shifts.

Use a consistent title such as Card • benefit • action by YYYY-MM-DD. In the notes, write: “Confirmed in rewards dashboard on [date]; must [required action]; check posting by [date/time zone].” The bracketed date in this example is a value you replace in your own calendar, not a program rule.
Review the event after completing the action. If the terms require a posted transaction, leave the reminder open until the account shows the credit, points or miles. If the result is missing, the original event notes give you the card, date and required condition needed to contact support.
Choose between a calendar and a dedicated tracker
| Approach | Coverage | Date control | Reliability considerations | Cost and privacy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer alerts | Account activity such as payments, purchases, balances and statements | Usually limited to the issuer’s available alert types | Set up separately for each account; delivery can be delayed | Usually included with the account; managed inside the issuer’s systems |
| Manual digital calendar | Any reward, benefit or loyalty program you enter | You choose lead time, repeats and channels | Accurate only if you verify dates and maintain entries after term changes | Often free; does not require sharing card credentials with a separate service |
| Dedicated tracking service | May combine multiple cards and advertise expiry reminders | May offer automated dates and notifications; coverage varies | Feature and coverage statements are vendor claims; verify critical dates yourself | Review what data it requests, whether it is free and how access is protected |
A service such as Perkmon advertises card-benefit expiry reminders and says its core features are free with no credit card required. Those are product-page claims, not independent verification of coverage, accuracy or security practices. If you use any tracker, treat the program’s own dashboard and terms as the authority.
The practical choice is not always either-or. Issuer alerts remain useful for fraud, payment and balance monitoring, while a calendar can hold deadlines for cards that offer no expiration alert. A tracker may save data-entry time across several cards, but convenience is worthwhile only if its dates, supported programs and notification controls match your needs.

Monthly check
- Open each rewards dashboard and review newly displayed expiration dates.
- Confirm that monthly or quarterly benefits reset as expected.
- Match completed actions to posted credits, points or miles rather than assuming a transaction qualified.
Before a major redemption
- Re-read the current terms for the specific reward or benefit.
- Confirm the deadline, time zone and posting requirement.
- Check that the account is open and eligible and that no activation step is outstanding.
After account or contact changes
- Update email addresses and mobile numbers at the issuer.
- Recheck text-message enrollment and notification permissions on your phone.
- Review calendar events if a card was replaced, upgraded, closed or moved to a different rewards program.
Set an annual review for every card anniversary and whenever an issuer announces a program change. Delete obsolete reminders; leaving old dates active can be as dangerous as having no reminder.

Use the monthly review to reconcile the inventory, not just to scan dates. Remove a closed account, add a newly enrolled benefit and update any recurring event whose reset date has changed. Keeping the list short and current makes it more likely that you will act on a real deadline instead of ignoring a calendar full of stale notices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a missing or late alert
- Check the setting: return to the issuer’s alert page and confirm the alert is enabled for the correct card, not merely for another account under the same login.
- Check delivery details: verify the email address, mobile number, push permissions, spam folder and carrier blocking.
- Check enrollment timing: some alerts take one or two business days to start, and non-urgent notices may be processed overnight.
- Check the account record: look in the issuer’s Message Center or secure inbox for a notice that did not arrive through your preferred channel.
- Check the deadline independently: open the rewards dashboard and terms; do not extend a deadline because an alert was late.
- Contact the issuer promptly: provide the card, alert type, setup date and transaction or deadline involved, without sharing a password or full card number through an insecure channel.
A missing notification is an alert-system problem, not proof that the underlying payment, purchase or reward event did not occur. Verify the account directly.
When contacting support, keep a record of the representative’s answer and the date. If the question concerns a posted transaction, ask whether the merchant transaction is pending, whether it qualifies and when the credit or points should appear. That information belongs in the event notes so the same issue does not have to be reconstructed later.
Protect your data while tracking benefits
Keep full card numbers, passwords, security answers and one-time codes out of calendar titles and ordinary notes. Use the issuer’s secure app or website for account details and identify cards by a nickname or last four digits in your personal tracker. If a third-party service requests account access, read its permission scope, authentication method, retention policy and deletion process before connecting anything. A tool that asks for more access than it needs creates a separate security decision from the convenience of automated reminders.
A free service is not automatically the safest choice, and a paid feature is not automatically more accurate. Compare whether the tool needs login credentials, whether you can delete the account and whether reminders can be exported if you stop using it. For a manual calendar, protect the device and calendar account with a strong password and multifactor authentication where available.
A complete setup you can finish in one session
- List every issuer, card, rewards currency and linked loyalty account.
- Enable payment, purchase, balance, statement and credit-limit alerts that are available and useful for each issuer.
- Confirm email, mobile, push permissions and text enrollment.
- Open each rewards dashboard and record every displayed expiration date.
- Read the current terms to identify the starting event, cutoff time, posting requirement and any activation step.
- Enter an early calendar reminder and an optional second reminder for each deadline.
- Test one issuer notification and inspect the secure Message Center if delivery is unclear.
- Schedule a monthly review and an annual terms check.
This division of labor is intentional: issuer alerts help monitor account activity, while your verified calendar or tracker handles deadlines the issuer may not notify you about.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do credit-card issuer alerts normally warn me that points are expiring?
Usually not as a universal feature. Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo describe alerts for payments, purchases, balances, statements and credit-limit activity. Check the specific rewards dashboard and terms, then create your own deadline reminder.
How far in advance should I set a reward or benefit reminder?
Use enough lead time for the required action. A simple redemption may need only a few days, while a travel booking, transfer or qualifying purchase may require weeks. A second reminder near the cutoff provides a backup.

Can I rely on a purchase alert to prove that a benefit was used?
No. A purchase alert confirms account activity, not necessarily eligibility or posting. Review the benefit terms and wait for the credit, points or miles to appear in the account.
What is the Central Bank five-year expiration rule?
That particular program says points remain available for five years from the calendar month in which they post and expire at the end of that month. It is program-specific and should not be applied to other cards.
What should I do if an alert arrives late or not at all?
Confirm the alert setting, contact details, phone permissions and spam filtering. Check the issuer’s secure Message Center, allow for stated processing delays, and verify the deadline directly in the rewards account and current terms.
Is a dedicated expiry-tracking service better than a calendar?
It may combine cards and advertise automated reminders, but coverage and dates vary. A calendar gives you direct control and usually costs nothing. Whichever method you use, verify critical dates against the program’s own dashboard and terms.
What information is safe to put in a calendar reminder?
Use a card nickname or last four digits, the benefit name, deadline, required action and source location. Do not store full card numbers, passwords, security answers or one-time codes in ordinary notes.
Do recurring calendar reminders always work for annual or quarterly benefits?
Only when the reset schedule is confirmed and remains unchanged. Review recurring events after card replacements, upgrades, closures, anniversary changes or announced program updates.
The Bottom Line
Enable issuer alerts for account activity, but manage expiring rewards and benefit deadlines separately. Verify each date and posting rule in the specific program’s dashboard and terms, set early reminders with a backup, and confirm that the reward or credit actually posts before closing the task.
