To set up automatic required minimum distribution (RMD) payments, start with the bank, brokerage, or retirement-plan administrator that holds the account. Look for an RMD or recurring-withdrawal service in the account portal, or request the institution’s current form. Before submitting it, confirm the account type, the RMD year, the amount, the first-payment date, available frequencies, delivery method, tax withholding, and the institution’s processing cutoff. Automatic instructions can reduce missed-payment risk, but you remain responsible for making sure the full RMD is distributed on time.
What an automatic RMD payment actually does
An automatic RMD arrangement authorizes the institution holding a retirement account to send scheduled distributions to a bank account, by check, or through another delivery method it supports. Depending on the institution, the instruction may specify a fixed amount, an RMD amount calculated by the institution, or an annual RMD plan that must be reviewed or renewed.

There is no provider-independent enrollment process. Account portals use different labels, forms ask for different information, and some plans calculate the annual amount while others require you to supply it. A recurring withdrawal that worked for one IRA therefore cannot be assumed to work for another IRA or an employer plan.
The safest approach is to treat automation as a payment instruction, not as a transfer of responsibility. You still need to identify the correct account and tax year, verify the calculation, meet the IRS deadline, and check that the payments actually occurred.

First determine whether an RMD applies to your account
RMD rules depend on the account arrangement, your age, whether you are the original owner or a beneficiary, and (for some workplace plans) whether you still work for the employer. Confirm the category before asking for automatic payments.
| Account or situation | General treatment while the owner is alive | What to confirm with the institution |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional IRA | Generally subject to RMDs beginning at the applicable age. | Whether the custodian calculates the amount and whether separate IRA withdrawals can be aggregated. |
| SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA | Generally subject to RMDs under the same owner-age framework. | Which recurring-withdrawal form applies and whether the plan has an internal cutoff. |
| 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), or similar employer plan | Generally subject to RMDs. A plan may allow a still-working participant to delay the first RMD until retirement, except for a 5% owner. | Whether the plan permits the still-working delay, requires distributions separately from that plan, and supports automatic RMD instructions. |
| Roth IRA | Generally no lifetime RMD for the original owner. | Whether the account is actually a Roth IRA and not a traditional, inherited, or converted arrangement with different rules. |
| Designated Roth account in a workplace plan | Generally excluded from lifetime RMDs for the original owner under current rules. | Whether the plan’s recordkeeping and distribution rules reflect the account’s Roth status. |
| Inherited IRA or inherited workplace account | Beneficiary rules apply and can differ based on the beneficiary and the deceased owner’s circumstances. | The beneficiary distribution schedule and whether the institution offers a dedicated inherited-account RMD service. |
Do not enroll a recurring payment until the institution confirms that the specific account is eligible. A beneficiary account, a plan subject to a special distribution schedule, and an owner’s traditional IRA may all display similar withdrawal menus but require different calculations.
Know the RMD deadlines before choosing a payment date
For most original owners, the first RMD is for the calendar year in which they reach age 73. The first IRA RMD may be postponed until April 1 of the following year. That is an optional delay, not an extra tax-free year: taking the first distribution in the following year can leave you owing both the delayed first RMD and the next year’s RMD in that same calendar year.
After the first year, RMDs are generally due by December 31 each year. A workplace-plan participant who is still employed may be able to delay the first distribution until retirement if the plan permits it; the exception generally does not apply to a person who owns 5% or more of the employer.
| Situation | General deadline | Planning point |
|---|---|---|
| First RMD from an IRA for the year you reach 73 | December 31 of that year, or April 1 of the next year if you use the first-year delay. | If delayed, the next year’s RMD is still generally due December 31, creating two taxable distributions in one year. |
| Later owner RMDs | December 31 each year. | Schedule enough time for the provider’s processing and bank-delivery periods. |
| Still-working participant in an eligible workplace plan | May be delayed until retirement if the plan allows, except for a 5% owner. | Obtain the plan’s written rule before postponing a payment. |
| Inherited account | Varies by beneficiary and account facts. | Use the inherited-account schedule supplied by the plan or custodian rather than the owner-age rule. |
The institution may impose an earlier internal cutoff than the IRS deadline. Ask how many business days it needs for approval, liquidation, withholding, and delivery, and record that cutoff alongside the legal due date.

Step-by-step: enrolling in automatic RMD payments
1. Identify every account that may have a separate obligation
Make a list of each retirement account, its custodian, and its balance source. IRA owners generally calculate each IRA’s RMD separately but may take the combined IRA amount from one or more of their IRAs. RMDs from 401(k), 457(b), and similar employer plans generally must be satisfied separately for each plan account. Do not assume that a payment from one plan covers another plan.
2. Ask the custodian for its current RMD or recurring-withdrawal process
Sign in to the account portal and search for labels such as “Required minimum distribution,” “RMD,” “Retirement withdrawals,” or “Recurring withdrawals.” If you cannot find an option, call the retirement-services or distribution department and request the current form and instructions. Ask whether electronic submission is accepted and whether a signature, notarization, or identity verification is required.
Provider forms can change. One institution may combine an automatic-withdrawal election with its IRA form; another may use a separate RMD-plan form for certain employer accounts. Treat any example form as specific to that institution and account type, not as a universal template.
3. Establish who calculates the amount
Ask the institution whether it will calculate the RMD using the account’s prior December 31 balance and the applicable IRS factor, whether it uses information from other accounts held there, and when it refreshes the calculation. Some custodians display an amount but still require you to confirm it; others require an owner-supplied amount.
The IRS states: “Although the IRA custodian or retirement plan administrator may calculate the RMD, the account owner is ultimately responsible for taking the correct RMD amount.” Treat the displayed figure as a useful check, not as a guarantee that every account and beneficiary fact was included.

Write the year being satisfied on the form or in your records. Verify whether the amount is the full annual RMD or only one installment. If the instruction is submitted late in the year, ask whether the provider can complete processing before December 31 and what happens if a bank holiday or market closure delays liquidation.

5. Choose an allowed frequency
Institutions may offer annual, quarterly, monthly, or other schedules, but availability is provider-specific. Some may permit a fixed number of installments; others may offer only annual or ad-hoc withdrawals. Select a schedule that gives the provider enough time to process the final installment before the deadline. Do not assume that a monthly setting automatically recalculates after a new year begins.
6. Choose where the money will go
Common choices include an electronic transfer to a verified bank account or a mailed check. Confirm whether the destination must be established before the RMD form, whether the account title must match the retirement account owner, and how long a new bank-link verification takes. A transfer that is “scheduled” in the portal may not be complete until the funds leave the retirement account and are credited or mailed.
7. Make a deliberate withholding election
RMDs are generally taxable income, except to the extent a distribution represents previously taxed basis or another qualifying tax-free amount. The payer may offer federal and state withholding choices, and the available elections can vary by distribution type and arrangement.

| Federal income-tax withholding | Whether you can choose a percentage, a dollar amount, or no withholding, and whether the election applies to every installment or only this payment. |
| State income-tax withholding | Whether your state requires withholding, permits an opt-out, or uses a separate form. |
| Net amount delivered | Whether the stated RMD amount is gross or net of withholding. The RMD obligation is based on the gross distribution, not merely the amount deposited in your bank account. |
| Changes later in the year | How to change withholding and how much lead time the institution needs for the change to take effect. |
Coordinate withholding with your broader tax situation. Delaying the first RMD can concentrate two distributions, and withholding that is too low may leave you with an estimated-tax shortfall while withholding that is too high reduces cash flow during the year.
8. Submit before the institution’s cutoff and save confirmation
Submit the completed form or electronic instruction before the provider’s stated cutoff, not merely before December 31. Save the confirmation number, submitted form, date, selected frequency, gross amount, withholding, destination, and first payment date. If the instruction was given by phone, record the representative’s name or identification number and request written confirmation.
9. Verify the first payment and the annual total
Check the retirement account transaction history and the receiving bank account or check delivery. Confirm the gross distribution, withholding, and settlement date. Keep a running total of all RMD payments from each plan so that installments are not mistaken for the full annual requirement.

How the amount is generally calculated
For a typical owner account, the calculation uses the account balance on the preceding December 31 divided by the applicable IRS life-expectancy factor:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →RMD = prior December 31 account balance ÷ applicable IRS distribution-period factor
The applicable table depends on circumstances. A different table can apply when a spouse is the sole beneficiary and more than 10 years younger than the owner. Confirm the table and factor for the particular year; do not carry a prior year’s factor forward without checking.
If you own several traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRAs, calculate each IRA’s RMD separately. You can generally withdraw the combined IRA amount from one or more of those IRAs. That aggregation rule generally does not let you use an IRA withdrawal to satisfy a 401(k), 457(b), or similar employer-plan RMD. Each employer plan normally has to distribute its own required amount.
After-tax basis and qualifying tax-free amounts can affect the taxable portion even though they do not usually eliminate the distribution requirement. Ask the custodian and a tax professional how basis is tracked before selecting withholding.

|---|---|
| Eligibility | Does the service cover this exact account type, including inherited and employer-plan accounts? |
| Calculation | Will the institution calculate the annual RMD, show the underlying balance and factor, or require an owner-supplied amount? |
| Frequency | Are annual, quarterly, monthly, or other schedules available, and can the final installment be timed before December 31? |
| Delivery | Can funds go by electronic transfer or check, and how long does bank verification take? |
| Withholding | Can federal and state elections be set independently, and can they be changed for a later installment? |
| Recalculation | Does the provider recalculate each year, require a new election, or leave the owner to update the amount? |
| Cutoff and support | What is the processing cutoff, and which team handles a late or incorrect RMD? |
| Records | Can you download confirmations, payment histories, and year-end tax forms? |
No feature comparison establishes which provider is best for every investor. The relevant choice is the one whose eligibility, calculation method, timing, withholding, and documentation match your account and tax needs.
Annual maintenance: automation still needs supervision
At the start of each year, review the recurring instruction rather than assuming it carried over correctly:
- Confirm the account’s prior December 31 balance and the new year’s applicable factor.
- Check whether your age, beneficiary designation, marital status, employment status, or account type changes the calculation.
- Ask whether the provider automatically recalculated the amount or requires a new form.
- Review the frequency, destination, and federal and state withholding.
- Compare the year-to-date gross distributions with the required amount for each account or plan.
- Save the updated confirmation and revisit the schedule before the provider’s cutoff.
Investment losses, transfers, rollovers, or a change in beneficiary can make a previous recurring amount inappropriate. A fixed dollar instruction is not necessarily a fixed legal obligation.
What happens if an automatic payment is wrong or late
The payment was short
Contact the custodian immediately and ask how to distribute the remaining amount before the deadline or as soon as possible afterward. Document the dates, amounts, and explanation. The IRS describes a potential 25% excise tax on an RMD shortfall, reduced to 10% when corrected within the specified two-year period. Form 5329 is used to report the shortfall.
The payment missed the deadline
Arrange the corrective distribution promptly, retain proof of the request and completion, and ask a tax professional about reporting. IRS guidance allows the tax to be waived when the taxpayer demonstrates reasonable error and takes reasonable steps to remedy it; a waiver is not automatic.
The provider sent too much
An excess distribution generally does not substitute for an RMD owed by a different plan, and the treatment of an excess can depend on the account and transaction. Ask the institution and your tax professional how to document and report it rather than simply reducing next year’s instruction.
The payment went to the wrong destination
Notify the custodian and receiving bank at once. Do not assume that a returned or redirected payment automatically satisfies the RMD. Keep evidence of the attempted and completed transactions and verify the gross amount credited to the retirement account’s distribution history.
