The safest way to set up automatic life insurance premium payments is to start with your insurer’s official portal, app, branch instructions, or customer-service channel. Select a recurring method the insurer actually supports—such as a bank mandate, standing instruction, bill-pay autopay, recurring card instruction, or eNACH—then verify the policy, payment account, amount, frequency, debit date, and authorization details before submitting.
Automatic payment is not universal. Eligibility, supported payment rails, setup lead time, validation steps, fees, debit dates, grace periods, and the effect of a failed debit depend on the insurer, policy, country, and sometimes the bank or payment provider. The LIC and PNB MetLife procedures below are official examples, not rules for every life policy.

What automatic premium payment does
An automatic premium arrangement gives an insurer, bank, or authorized payment provider permission to collect recurring premiums from a linked bank account or card. Once active, the payment is initiated around each scheduled due date instead of requiring you to remember a manual transaction.
Depending on the insurer, “autopay” may mean different things:

- Insurer-direct bank mandate: You authorize the insurer or its mandate processor to debit a specified account.
- Standing instruction: You instruct a bank or service provider to pay bills automatically when they become payable.
- Bill-pay autopay: The insurer sends an invoice to a participating bank or payment service, which then pays according to your instruction.
- Recurring card instruction: A credit or debit card is authorized for repeated charges where the insurer and card network support that arrangement.
- eNACH or electronic mandate: In India, an electronic bank mandate is authenticated online, commonly through net banking or debit-card credentials.
The practical benefit is fewer missed due dates, but autopay does not remove your responsibility. You still need to keep the account funded, monitor transactions, maintain current contact details, and confirm that the insurer credited each premium.
Check these details before enrolling
Have the following information ready and confirm each item on the insurer’s current instructions:
- Exact policy: Confirm the policy number, insured person, policy status, and whether the premium is currently payable. A payment option shown for one product may not be available for another.
- Premium schedule: Record the amount, frequency (monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly), next due date, and any permitted payment window.
- Eligible payer and account: Check whether the account holder must be the policyholder, whether joint accounts are accepted, and whether your bank, card, country, or currency is supported.
- Contact details: Mobile number and email may be mandatory for authentication, alerts, or mandate confirmation.
- Lead time: A mandate may not be usable for the next installment if enrollment or bank validation is still pending. Do not assume an application submitted today will debit tomorrow.
- Charges: Look for insurer, bank, card, or payment-provider service fees, and determine whether any fee is one-time or recurring. If the terms do not state a charge, treat it as “not stated,” not as proof that the service is free.
- Debit-date control: Some providers choose a fixed processing date; others debit near the policy due date. Record the date shown during authorization.
- Cancellation and changes: Find out how to replace an account, change a card, suspend a mandate, or cancel autopay. Closing an account alone may not be the insurer’s required cancellation process.
How to set up automatic life insurance premium payments
- Open the official payment instructions for the policy. Use the insurer’s authenticated portal or app, or contact its published customer-service channel. Search for labels such as auto-debit, recurring payment, standing instruction, direct debit, eNACH, or bank mandate. Avoid relying on an old email or an unofficial payment link.
- Choose a supported recurring route. Compare the available bank-account, card, insurer-direct, bank bill-pay, or eNACH options. Confirm that the policy, premium frequency, country, bank, card, and account holder qualify. An option visible in a general payment menu may still be unavailable for your particular policy.
- Enter policy and payment details. Supply the policy number and requested account or card information exactly as shown on the insurer’s form. Check the account number, card expiry, mobile number, email, and payer name before continuing.
- Review the authorization screen. Confirm the premium amount, frequency, first debit date, recurring period, maximum debit amount if displayed, and any fee. Read the cancellation or failure terms. Save or download the confirmation page if the service offers one.
- Complete authentication or mandate validation. This may involve a one-time password, bank login, debit-card credentials, a bank redirect, or a separate approval by your bank. An online request is not necessarily an activated mandate; wait for the insurer or bank to show a successful status.
- Check activation in the insurer’s own channel. Look for an active mandate, enrollment reference, next debit date, or confirmation message. If the next due date is close and activation is not confirmed, pay through an authorized manual route according to the insurer’s instructions.
- Verify the first collection. After the scheduled date, check the bank or card transaction and the insurer’s receipt, policy ledger, or policy status. A debit visible in your account is not enough if the insurer has not credited the premium.
- Maintain the arrangement. Keep sufficient funds or available credit, update your phone and email, and replace an expired card or changed bank account through the formal mandate process. Keep payment confirmations and receipts with your policy records.
Comparing the main autopay routes
| Route | How authorization works | What to verify | Failure or change considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insurer-direct bank mandate | The insurer or its processor is authorized to debit a linked bank account. | Eligible banks, account-holder rules, activation date, debit date, and any mandate limit. | Ask whether a rejected debit is retried, whether later deductions stop, and how to cancel or replace the account. |
| Bank or payment-provider bill-pay autopay | The insurer’s bill or invoice is sent to a participating bank or service provider, which pays under your standing instruction. | Whether your insurer and policy are listed, invoice timing, provider-specific debit dates, and receipt visibility. | A payment can be duplicated if you also pay manually while autopay is active. Follow the provider’s cancellation process. |
| Recurring card instruction | A card is authorized for repeated charges where the insurer and card network permit it. | Supported card type, expiry handling, transaction limits, fees, and whether a replacement card requires a new authorization. | Declines can occur because of expiry, limits, fraud controls, or insufficient credit. Confirm how to update the card without interrupting cover. |
| eNACH or electronic bank mandate | An online mandate is authenticated through a participating bank, often using net banking or debit-card credentials. | Participating-bank list, mobile and email requirements, validation deadline, and first eligible due date. | Pending validation does not guarantee collection. Check the mandate status and pay another authorized way if the due date arrives first. |
No route is automatically superior. A bank account may avoid card-expiry problems, while a card may offer a different dispute or alert process. The insurer’s policy terms and the payment provider’s current rules determine the useful choice.

LIC eNACH: an example of insurer-specific enrollment
LIC’s online eNACH instructions illustrate why timing and validation must be checked rather than assumed. The page, last updated August 22, 2023, states that:
- Only participating banks can be used.
- Mobile and email details are mandatory.
- Registration and validation use net banking or debit-card credentials.
- The next premium due date must be at least 16 days after the online enrollment request.
- After the request is registered online, bank-account validation is allowed three days.
These are LIC process rules as published on that page, not a general eNACH standard. Before using the route, check LIC’s current participating-bank list and the live instructions because a portal workflow or eligibility rule can change.
Practical LIC eNACH sequence
- Sign in to LIC’s official online service and select the eNACH or eMandate registration option for the relevant policy.
- Enter the policy and contact information requested by the form. Make sure the mobile number and email match the details LIC can use for verification.
- Select an eligible bank account and continue to the bank authentication page.
- Authenticate with the method offered by the bank, such as net banking or debit-card credentials.
- Complete any additional validation within the stated three-day period.
- Check that LIC shows the mandate as active and that the next due date is at least 16 days away. If it is sooner, use an authorized payment route for that installment instead of assuming the mandate will collect it.
LIC bill-pay and alternate-channel example
LIC’s alternate-channel guidance describes bills or invoices sent to participating banks and service providers. It says a customer may either issue standing instructions for automatic payment or choose a manual “view and pay” process. The guidance states that the invoice is generated five days before the due date and remains valid through the applicable grace period.

Debit dates can be provider-specific, so the date shown by the selected bank or service should be treated as the operative date. LIC also warns that paying through another channel while an automatic arrangement is already registered can result in duplicate payments. Before making a manual payment, check whether the pending autopay has been canceled, skipped, or rejected.

A failed debit therefore requires prompt action; do not wait for the next scheduled cycle.
PNB MetLife example: standing instructions and a stated lapse consequence
PNB MetLife says customers may set up standing instructions on a bank account or credit card, or use eNACH. The available route, authentication, and account requirements still need to be confirmed for the specific policy.

Its published payment guidance states a 30-day renewal grace period and says: “If the renewal premium is not received within this time period, the policy will lapse and the life insurance protection will cease to exist.” That statement applies to PNB MetLife’s stated terms. It must not be generalized to another insurer, policy form, or country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Grace periods, missed debits, and lapse risk
A grace period is not a universal autopay safety net. It is a policy-specific period after the due date during which the insurer may accept the premium under stated conditions. The exact effect on coverage, interest, claims, and reinstatement depends on the contract and insurer.
| Published guidance | Premium frequency or situation | Stated period or consequence |
|---|---|---|
| LIC policyholder guidance | Monthly premium | 15 days |
| LIC policyholder guidance | Quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly premium | One month, but not less than 30 days |
| PNB MetLife payment guidance | Renewal premium | 30-day grace period; the page says cover ceases if the premium is not received within that period |
LIC also tells policyholders to pay on time even if a premium notice does not arrive. A missing notice, pending mandate, or bank error does not by itself establish that the premium was paid.

What to do when an automatic debit fails
- Identify the failure. Check the bank or card record for a rejection, reversal, insufficient-funds message, expired-card notice, or technical error.
- Check the insurer ledger. Confirm whether the premium was credited despite an unclear bank status. Do not make a second payment until you know whether the first one settled, because duplicate collection is possible.
- Contact the insurer promptly. Provide the policy number, failed-debit date, mandate reference, and bank transaction information. Ask whether the mandate remains active or has been suspended.
- Use an authorized alternate route. If the insurer instructs you to pay manually, use its official portal, listed bank channel, or other approved method. Obtain a receipt.
- Check the applicable grace and reinstatement terms. Confirm the final date for payment, whether coverage is affected during the grace period, and what evidence or underwriting may be required after a lapse.
- Repair the mandate. Add funds, remove a bank block, update an expired card, or complete a new validation as directed. A rejected debit may stop later deductions, as LIC’s NACH guidance describes.
Changing, pausing, or canceling autopay
Use the insurer or payment provider’s formal change process when a bank account, card, address, phone number, or email changes. A new account may require a fresh mandate and authentication. Ask for the effective date and whether an installment falls between cancellation of the old instruction and activation of the new one.
If you want to stop autopay, obtain a cancellation confirmation and record the last debit date. Canceling a bank standing instruction may not cancel an insurer-held mandate, and deleting a payment app may not revoke an instruction already registered with the insurer. Continue paying manually until the insurer confirms that no further automatic debit is scheduled.
Security and record-keeping
- Begin from the insurer’s official website, app, or published contact details rather than an unsolicited message.
- Authenticate only on the insurer’s or bank’s secure page. Never share one-time passwords, card PINs, or net-banking passwords with a caller or intermediary.
- Check the authorization amount and frequency for unusual values before approving.
- Save the mandate reference, confirmation email, first-debit date, and every premium receipt.
- Reconcile the bank or card statement with the insurer’s policy ledger after each collection.
- Keep enough funds available several days before the expected debit if your bank places a hold or processes collections in batches.
A practical decision rule
Choose the route that satisfies all four conditions: it is explicitly available for your policy, it can be activated before the next due date, you can monitor its confirmations, and you understand what happens after a rejected debit. If any condition is uncertain, make the next premium through an approved manual route and resolve the mandate before relying on it.
Automatic payment is active only when the insurer or authorized provider confirms enrollment—not when a form has merely been submitted. Keep manual payment capability available, verify the first debit and premium credit, and apply the grace-period and lapse rules printed for your own policy.
