How to Set Up Automatic 401(k) Contribution Increases

To make your 401(k) contribution rise automatically, use your employer’s retirement-plan portal or the election process supplied by HR. Look for a control labeled automatic increase, annual increase, contribution rate, or paycheck deferral. Set the increase amount, timing, maximum rate, and effective date, then save the election and verify it on a later pay statement. Because every plan uses its own rules and recordkeeper, contact HR or the plan administrator if you cannot find the setting or the deduction does not change when expected.

What an automatic 401(k) contribution increase does

An automatic increase raises the percentage of each paycheck that you defer into your employer’s 401(k) according to a schedule you select or that the plan defines. Instead of remembering to change the election every year, you authorize the plan to apply a future increase automatically. The deduction comes from payroll, so the change affects future paychecks rather than money already paid to you.

The feature may be available only for certain contribution elections, may use a fixed percentage-point increase or another method, and may stop at a plan-defined maximum. The schedule can also have a specific annual date or another effective date. Your plan’s document and election process control those details; there is no universal 401(k) portal layout or standard employee setting.

Automatic enrollment and automatic escalation are different

Automatic enrollment gives an employee who has not made an election a default contribution rate. Automatic escalation increases a contribution rate over time. A plan can have one without the other, or both.

In an automatic-enrollment arrangement, you can generally make an affirmative election to contribute a different amount or to contribute nothing. The Internal Revenue Service explains that an employee may change the amount of employee contributions or choose not to contribute, but must do so through an affirmative election. That right does not mean every plan offers an automatic annual increase for an employee’s chosen rate.

Why the plan’s terms determine the answer

An automatic-contribution amendment generally states the default percentage, how employees opt out or choose another amount, the election procedure, default-investment treatment, and notice requirements. Those provisions explain why one employer’s portal may show an annual-increase checkbox while another requires a form, a call to the recordkeeper, or a request through HR.

This guide concerns an individual employee changing a deferral election. Setting up automatic enrollment or escalation for an entire workforce is an employer plan-design task with additional legal and notice requirements.

Prepare before you change the election

Find the correct plan instructions

Start with the benefits site, onboarding materials, or the recordkeeper named on your 401(k) statement. Use the employer’s official sign-in address rather than an unfamiliar link in an email. If HR supplied a paper or telephone process, follow that process instead of assuming the portal supports every option.

Have your current contribution percentage, pay frequency, next pay date, and the plan’s summary or automatic-enrollment notice available. You will need these details to judge when a change should appear and whether the amount deducted is reasonable.

Know which election you are changing

Plans may separate traditional pretax contributions, Roth contributions, and other eligible sources. The increase control may apply to one election, to a combined rate, or to a plan-defined category. Read the label and confirmation carefully so an automatic increase does not apply to a different source than you intended.

Check the employer match first

Read the match formula and how matching contributions are calculated. Some plans calculate a match each paycheck; others use a different plan method. A contribution increase can change the amount you receive from the employer, but only your plan’s formula tells you when and how that happens. Do not assume that a match applies to every dollar or that a year-end adjustment will correct a shortfall.

Set up the automatic increase step by step

  1. Sign in or obtain the election form. Open the employer’s 401(k) recordkeeper portal, or follow HR’s published instructions. The IRS confirms that participants must have an effective opportunity to make or change a deferral election at least once during each plan year, but it does not prescribe a particular website or button sequence.
  2. Open the contribution or paycheck-deferral section. Look for wording such as contribution rate, deferral election, annual increase, automatic increase, or escalation. A setting may appear beside the current percentage, under a change-contributions menu, or on a separate automatic-enrollment page.
  3. Confirm that escalation is available for your election. Read whether the feature applies to your current affirmative election, an automatic-enrollment default, or both. If the page shows no increase option, do not infer that the plan prohibits increases; ask HR or the administrator which process applies.
  4. Read every schedule field. Record the increase amount, the date or frequency of each increase, the maximum contribution rate, and the first paycheck affected. Some plans use percentage points; others use a plan-defined calculation. Also look for instructions on pausing, canceling, or changing the schedule.
  5. Review the match interaction. Compare the planned rate with the match formula and the plan’s definition of eligible compensation. If the match is calculated per paycheck, a rate change that begins late in the year may affect fewer pay periods than you expect.
  6. Compare your annual deferrals with the legal limit. Estimate the total employee elective deferrals for the calendar year, including contributions already made and those the schedule would create. The IRS announced a 2026 employee 401(k) elective-deferral limit of $24,500 in 2025. Catch-up rules can allow additional contributions for eligible participants, so the standard limit is not necessarily your total permitted amount.
  7. Submit and save the election. Complete the portal confirmation or return the required form. Save the confirmation number, downloaded document, or a screenshot showing the election, effective date, and selected cap. The plan may use a payroll cutoff, so a saved election might not affect the immediately following paycheck.
  8. Verify the first affected paycheck. Check the pay statement and, if available, the account transaction history. Compare the deduction with the percentage applied to eligible pay. If the amount does not match the stated effective date, contact HR or the administrator with your confirmation rather than submitting duplicate elections.
  9. Review investments separately. Changing the contribution percentage does not necessarily change where the new money is invested. Confirm your investment election in the plan portal. IRS guidance says the employer selects a default investment when a participant has not made an investment election and must provide an opportunity to change that choice.

What to record when you compare plan options

If your plan offers more than one automatic-increase choice, compare the features below before selecting one. The labels and values are plan-specific, so use the plan document or administrator’s explanation as the source for each field.

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Increase method Fixed percentage points or another plan-defined calculation Determines how much the payroll deduction changes at each step
Timing Annual date, anniversary, or another stated schedule Identifies the paycheck on which the new rate begins
Maximum rate The cap written in the election or plan terms Prevents the schedule from continuing beyond the authorized percentage
Election covered Current affirmative election, automatic-enrollment default, or a specified contribution source Shows which deductions the instruction will change
Control options How to pause, cancel, or change the schedule Lets you respond to a pay change or new financial obligation
Employer match Formula and whether the calculation is per paycheck or another method Shows how the higher deferral may affect employer contributions
Annual limit Current IRS elective-deferral limit and any applicable catch-up provision Helps prevent an election that would exceed the amount permitted for the year

How QACA and other automatic-enrollment rules fit in

QACA default percentages are not a universal employee setting

IRS participant guidance for a qualified automatic contribution arrangement (QACA) describes a default deferral percentage that starts at 3% and increases to 6% with each year the employee participates, with a 10% default ceiling. Those figures describe a particular plan arrangement. They are not a recommendation, and they do not establish that your employer’s portal will offer that schedule or allow you to apply it to an affirmative election.

The same QACA guidance describes employer-contribution alternatives: a specified matching formula or a 3% nonelective contribution. These are plan-design rules. They are not a promise that every participant receives a match or a 3% employer contribution.

Automatic-enrollment election rights

For an automatic-enrollment plan, the employer must give you an opportunity before automatic deferrals are withheld to choose no deferral or a different amount. The IRS describes that opportunity as an affirmative election. Make the election through the procedure in your notice or portal; simply telling a manager may not change payroll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some eligible automatic contribution arrangements, known as EACAs, may permit withdrawal of automatic contributions and associated earnings within 90 days after the first automatic contribution. That is a specific arrangement provision, not a general cancellation period for every automatic increase or every 401(k) plan. Check your notice before relying on it.

Stay within the annual contribution limit

Use the 2026 limit correctly

For 2026, the employee elective-deferral limit announced by the IRS is $24,500. It applies to the employee deferrals covered by that limit, not necessarily to every source of money in the account. Employer matching and nonelective contributions follow separate annual-limit rules, and eligible catch-up contributions can change how much an individual may contribute.

To estimate your total, add employee contributions already withheld during the year to the projected deductions under the new schedule. Use eligible compensation and your actual pay frequency. If you participate in more than one plan or change employers during the year, ask the plan administrator how your prior deferrals affect the remaining amount.

Understand payroll timing

An annual increase that takes effect after a payroll cutoff may first appear on a later check. A percentage applied to a bonus, overtime, or another special payment can also differ if that compensation is treated differently under the plan. Compare the pay statement’s eligible-pay definition with the election confirmation before concluding that payroll made an error.

Keep the investment election separate

Automatic escalation changes how much enters the account; it does not decide the investment mix. A plan may direct contributions to a default investment when you have not selected one, but you should review the investment election independently. Confirm whether the new contributions and the existing balance follow the same instruction, because some portals present future contributions and current holdings as separate controls.

Do not treat a higher contribution rate as an investment recommendation. The purpose of the election is to change the savings amount; investment selection remains a separate decision governed by the choices and disclosures in your plan.

If you cannot find an automatic-increase setting

Ask HR or the plan administrator these specific questions

  • Does the plan permit an employee to schedule automatic annual increases?
  • Does the setting apply to my current affirmative election or only to automatic enrollment?
  • What increase amount, timing, and maximum rate are available?
  • What is the effective date, and what payroll cutoff controls it?
  • How do I pause, cancel, or replace the schedule?
  • How is the employer match calculated, and is it determined per paycheck?
  • Which contribution sources and types count toward the annual employee limit?
  • How do I confirm that payroll accepted the election?

Ask for the answer in writing or keep the plan notice that states the terms. If no automatic feature exists, you can still make a recurring reminder to review the election during the plan year and submit the change through the approved process. A manual annual election is different from an automatic escalation, but it avoids relying on an unavailable portal control.

Troubleshoot common problems

The deduction did not change

Check the confirmation’s effective date against the pay period, not only the check date. Payroll may have closed before you submitted the election. If the first eligible paycheck has passed, contact HR or the administrator with the saved confirmation and ask which pay period will reflect the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rate increased more than expected

Review whether the schedule uses percentage points, a percentage of the existing rate, or another formula. Also check whether you changed a combined contribution rate or a separate traditional or Roth election. Request a correction promptly if payroll applied a setting different from the confirmation.

You are enrolled automatically after making another choice

Compare the date of your affirmative election with the plan’s automatic-enrollment date. The plan notice should explain how to choose a different amount or no deferral before automatic withholding begins. Re-entering the same election may not resolve the issue; ask the administrator to confirm which election is active.

You need to pause or lower the increase

Use the plan’s change-election process and confirm whether a pause affects only the next scheduled increase or also changes the current contribution rate. Save the new confirmation and verify the resulting paycheck. A temporary financial change may also require reviewing the annual-limit projection and match consequences.

Employee setup versus employer plan setup

An employee follows the plan’s election procedure. An employer or plan sponsor, by contrast, must establish the automatic contribution arrangement, document default percentages, define opt-out and alternative-election rights, address default investments, and provide required notices. Guidance aimed at small-business plan sponsors explains those setup obligations; it is not a substitute for the employee’s portal instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters when an HR page describes the plan’s default schedule. A sponsor-level description may explain what happens to employees who make no election, while your individual account may use a different affirmative rate or a different escalation option.

Use this final verification checklist

  • You used the employer’s current portal or published election process.
  • You confirmed that automatic escalation is available for the contribution election you intend to change.
  • You recorded the increase method, timing, maximum rate, and effective date.
  • You checked the employer match formula and its calculation method.
  • You projected employee deferrals against the applicable annual limit, including any catch-up rules that may apply to you.
  • You saved proof that the election was submitted.
  • You checked a later pay statement and account transaction for the expected deduction.
  • You reviewed investment instructions separately from the contribution-rate change.
  • You know how to pause, cancel, or replace the schedule if your circumstances change.

What to do next

Make the election only after you can identify the exact rate, schedule, cap, and effective paycheck shown by your plan. Keep the confirmation with your benefits records, then verify payroll rather than assuming the setting took effect. If any term is missing or contradictory, the plan administrator—not a generic 401(k) rule—must explain which election controls your account.
