To set up a systematic withdrawal plan (SWP), choose the mutual fund scheme and folio, read that scheme’s current SWP terms, then submit its enrollment request through the asset management company (AMC), registrar or authorised online account. You will specify the withdrawal amount or available option, frequency, payment date and duration, and confirm the registered bank account. The AMC meets each payment by redeeming units at the applicable repurchase price or NAV, so an SWP is a recurring sale of units—not interest or guaranteed income.
What a systematic withdrawal plan does
An SWP is a standing instruction attached to a mutual fund folio. At each scheduled interval, the fund processes a redemption and sends the proceeds to the bank account registered for that folio. The number of units removed depends on the applicable repurchase price or net asset value (NAV) on the processing date.

For a fixed-cash SWP, the basic relationship is:
Units redeemed = withdrawal amount ÷ applicable NAV
Taxes at source, exit loads or other scheme charges may affect the amount delivered or the number of units deducted where the scheme rules provide for them. The payment is therefore funded by selling part of your holding. It is not an additional return generated by the fund.

The practical setup is scheme-specific. AMCs and registrars can differ on minimum installments, permitted dates, frequencies, registration lead time, treatment of holidays, cancellation notice and what happens when the folio no longer contains enough units. A form or portal option available in one scheme is not automatically available in another.
Check these points before registering
Confirm the exact scheme and folio
Identify the scheme in which you hold units and the folio number attached to it. Check that the scheme supports an SWP and that it offers the frequency you need. If you hold several schemes or folios, an instruction submitted against the wrong folio can create an unexpected redemption or fail validation.
Read the scheme’s current SWP terms
Use the latest scheme information document, service request form or authenticated account instructions. Confirm:
Recommended Free Tools
- the minimum amount for each installment and any permitted increments;
- the frequencies and payment dates the scheme accepts;
- the first available commencement date and registration lead time;
- how a date falling on a weekend or market holiday is handled;
- whether an end date is required, optional or subject to a default;
- the notice period for changing or cancelling the instruction;
- what happens when the remaining units are insufficient for an installment.
These provisions belong to the selected scheme. Do not copy a threshold or default from another fund’s form.
Verify the destination bank account
SWP proceeds are normally sent to the bank mandate registered against the folio. Before submitting, confirm the account details shown by the AMC or registrar and resolve any outdated or inactive mandate first. A correct SWP instruction cannot compensate for an incorrect destination account.
Separate cash-flow needs from investment returns
Write down how much cash you actually need, how often you need it and how long the withdrawals may continue. The installment amount is a redemption instruction, not a promised yield. The selected amount can reduce principal, especially when the fund’s value falls or withdrawals continue after the portfolio has already declined.
How to register an SWP: step-by-step
1. Select the fund, folio and withdrawal option
Start with the scheme in which the units are held. Decide whether you need a fixed amount or another option explicitly offered by that scheme’s form. Some forms allow only a fixed rupee amount; others may present a limited set of choices. Use only the options displayed for that scheme.

2. Choose the installment amount
Enter an amount that meets the scheme’s minimum and any formatting or increment rules. If you are using the SWP to cover a recurring bill, match the payment date and amount to the bill’s due date while allowing for bank-processing time. Do not assume that an amount accepted by one scheme will be accepted by another.
3. Choose frequency and date
Select a supported frequency—such as monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, annual or weekly where offered—and then choose one of the dates permitted by the scheme. Some schemes offer a narrow list of dates rather than every calendar day. If the selected date is a non-business day, the scheme’s terms determine whether processing moves to a business day and which NAV applies.
4. Set the commencement and end dates
Enter the first withdrawal date only after checking the required lead time. If the form asks for an end date, provide one that reflects your plan. Where an end date is optional, read the default carefully: one scheme may treat a blank end date as perpetual, while another may require a defined duration. Never assume that a perpetual default applies across the market.
5. Submit through the AMC, registrar or authorised portal
Use the current scheme-specific SWP enrollment form or the AMC’s authorised online service. Online menus commonly place the request under a transaction or service-request area, but labels vary. Enter the folio details exactly as recorded, select the scheme and option, review the bank mandate and accept the declarations shown by the service.

If you use a physical form, complete every field the scheme requires and submit it to the AMC or its registrar at the channel specified in the current instructions. Keep a copy or electronic acknowledgement.
6. Submit before the scheme’s deadline
Registration lead time is not universal. A Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company scheme information statement hosted by AMFI and dated November 2025 says the SWP registration request must reach the Registrar or AMC seven days before the commencement date. A separate AMFI-hosted scheme document describes a ten-day lead time. These are scheme terms, not a market-wide rule. Use the deadline in the current document for your selected fund and build in extra time if the request is submitted physically.
7. Confirm registration and the first payment
Wait for the AMC or registrar to acknowledge processing. Check the account or confirmation message to verify the start date, amount, frequency, end date and destination bank. After the first scheduled date, reconcile the payment with the redemption statement and inspect the remaining unit balance.

Which settings matter most?
Amount
A fixed amount gives predictable cash flow but does not produce a predictable number of units redeemed. When NAV is lower, the same rupee payment consumes more units; when NAV is higher, it consumes fewer. If the scheme offers a percentage or variable option, read how it is calculated before selecting it.
Frequency
Monthly withdrawals provide regular cash flow, while quarterly, half-yearly or annual schedules create fewer redemption events. Weekly or other frequencies may be available in some schemes. Frequency affects how often units are sold and how closely payments line up with your spending needs; it does not turn the investment into an income product.
Payment date
Use a date that leaves enough time before your obligation is due. A date that falls on a holiday may be shifted under the scheme’s rules, so read the non-business-day clause rather than relying on a calendar assumption.
Duration and end date
A defined end date can prevent withdrawals from continuing beyond a known need. An instruction without an end date may continue under a scheme’s default until cancelled or until another stopping condition occurs. The exact default and cancellation notice belong to the individual scheme.
Minimum installment and other limits
Published minimums, permitted dates and frequency choices differ. Treat the amount shown on the current form as the controlling requirement. If an online portal rejects an amount, check the scheme’s minimum and increment rules before changing the investment or submitting a second instruction.
How each SWP payment changes your units
At the processing date, the AMC calculates the redemption using the applicable repurchase price or NAV. Suppose an illustrative installment is ₹10,000 and the applicable NAV is ₹20: approximately 500 units are redeemed before any applicable deductions. If the NAV later falls to ₹10, the same ₹10,000 installment would require approximately 1,000 units. If the NAV rises to ₹40, it would require approximately 250 units.
This arithmetic explains why a fixed cash amount can accelerate depletion in a falling market. It also means that two installments of the same rupee amount can have very different effects on the unit balance. Review the redemption statement rather than judging sustainability from the cash payment alone.

A scheduled payment can therefore arrive even when the underlying holding has lost value. Selling units during a decline leaves fewer units available if the market later recovers. The risk is especially important when withdrawals are large relative to the holding or continue for a long period.
Tax treatment: what an SWP does and does not establish
An SWP is a series of redemptions. The reviewed scheme material describes SWP redemptions as capital gains for tax purposes, and the Kotak scheme statement notes that tax may be deducted at source where applicable. That characterization does not supply a universal tax rate or determine your final liability.

Units bought at different times can have different costs and holding periods, so a single withdrawal may contain units with different tax outcomes. Obtain current official tax guidance or advice from a qualified tax professional for your facts. Do not select an SWP amount on the assumption that every rupee received is tax-free or that one rate applies to every mutual fund.
Risks and controls for an SWP
Principal depletion
Because units are redeemed, the balance can decline even if the fund’s NAV is unchanged. If withdrawals exceed the portfolio’s growth over time, the unit count and value will fall. There is no universal “safe” SWP percentage established by the scheme documents.
Market declines and sequence risk
Withdrawals during a falling market can sell more units for the same cash and leave fewer units for a subsequent recovery. Consider whether you have other liquid assets to cover near-term spending during a sharp decline instead of forcing a redemption at an unfavourable value.
Processing and mandate failures
An installment can be delayed or rejected if the registration was late, a date is not permitted, the bank mandate is invalid, the amount is below the minimum or the folio lacks enough units. Keep the acknowledgement, monitor the first payment and contact the AMC or registrar promptly if any detail differs from the submitted request.
Instruction exhaustion or automatic stopping
Scheme terms may stop an SWP when units are exhausted or when an installment cannot be processed. Confirm the exact stopping condition and whether the AMC sends a notice. Do not assume that a failed installment automatically reschedules itself.

Changing or cancelling an SWP
Use the AMC or registrar’s current modification or cancellation process. A change may require a new form or a fresh online request rather than editing the existing instruction. Check the notice period: cancellation submitted after the cutoff may not prevent the next scheduled redemption.
- Locate the active SWP in the folio’s transaction or service-request section.
- Record the instruction number, amount, frequency, next date and end date.
- Submit the change or cancellation through the authorised channel before the stated cutoff.
- Obtain confirmation and verify that the next redemption was removed or amended.
- Reconcile the bank statement and unit balance after the effective date.
If you need to stop a payment urgently, contact the AMC or registrar directly and ask which cutoff applies; an informal request to a bank may not cancel the fund redemption instruction.
Scheme terms you should not generalise
| Source document | Registration lead time stated | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company scheme information statement hosted by AMFI, dated November 2025 | Submit the SWP registration seven days before the commencement date | Apply only if the current terms for your selected scheme contain the same requirement |
| Separate AMFI-hosted scheme document | Ten days described for registration | Check that scheme’s current document; do not substitute seven days as a general deadline |
The same caution applies to minimum installment amounts, available frequencies, holiday handling, default end dates and cancellation notice. Those fields can change when a scheme updates its documents or service process.

After activation, keep a simple record of each scheduled date, amount paid, units redeemed, NAV used and units remaining. Compare the actual credit with the expected amount and investigate unexplained deductions. Review the remaining balance before renewing or increasing withdrawals.
- Before each review: check whether your spending need, payment date or bank account has changed.
- At regular intervals: compare total withdrawals with the portfolio value and unit balance, not just with the original investment.
- After a market decline: decide whether your cash reserve can cover spending temporarily so that you are not forced to increase redemptions.
- Before changing the amount: confirm the scheme’s new minimum, increment and notice requirements.
- For tax reporting: retain redemption statements showing dates, amounts and units sold.
When professional help is useful
An AMC or registrar can explain the scheme’s operational rules, but they do not replace personal tax or withdrawal planning. Consider qualified advice if you are unsure how much to withdraw, need to coordinate several funds, rely on the portfolio for essential expenses or need help determining the tax treatment of older purchases. AMFI notes that inexperienced or uncertain investors may benefit from assistance from a mutual fund distributor. Verify the adviser’s credentials, fees, scope and jurisdiction before acting.

What to remember
An SWP is a convenient way to automate recurring redemptions from a mutual fund, but convenience does not remove investment risk. Register through the selected scheme’s authorised channel, follow its own dates and minimums, submit early enough for its stated lead time and verify the bank mandate. Then monitor both cash received and units left. Treat every payment as a sale of units, and make tax and sustainability decisions using your fund, time horizon and personal circumstances rather than a universal rule.
