How to set up a SIP in a Nifty Total Market Index fund and stay invested through market falls

To set up this SIP, select an open-ended index mutual-fund scheme that explicitly tracks the Nifty Total Market Index or its Total Return Index (TRI), verify its current Scheme Information Document (SID) and factsheet, choose Direct or Regular deliberately, complete the fund provider’s mandate process, and set a contribution you can continue during equity-market volatility. A SIP automates purchases; it does not guarantee a profit, prevent losses or make the fund risk-free.

What you are setting up

A systematic investment plan (SIP) is a recurring instruction to invest a fixed rupee amount in a mutual-fund scheme at a chosen frequency. Each instalment buys units at the applicable net asset value (NAV). When the NAV is lower, the same amount buys more units; when it is higher, it buys fewer.

For this strategy, the scheme should be an open-ended index mutual fund whose stated objective is to replicate the Nifty Total Market Index, or the index’s Total Return Index (TRI). The TRI version includes the index methodology’s treatment of distributions and is commonly used as the benchmark for an index fund. One documented example is the Angel One Nifty Total Market Index Fund: its SID says the scheme seeks to replicate the Nifty Total Market Index and names Nifty Total Market TRI as its benchmark. It is an example, not a universal recommendation or the only eligible scheme.

An index fund aims to mirror its benchmark, not to outperform it. Expenses, cash balances, trading costs and other implementation effects mean the scheme’s return can differ from the index. The SID itself states: “However, there can be no assurance or guarantee that the investment objective of the Scheme will be achieved.”

Before opening the SIP: verify the scheme and documents

Confirm the index objective

Read the scheme name, investment objective and benchmark in the current SID. The wording should clearly identify the Nifty Total Market Index or Nifty Total Market TRI. Do not assume that a fund with “Nifty” in its name tracks this particular index; several Nifty indexes exist.

Read the current SID, addenda and factsheet

Before submitting a mandate, obtain the latest SID, any addenda and the AMC’s latest factsheet. Check:

  • the investment objective and benchmark;
  • the scheme’s risk label and principal risk factors;
  • Direct and Regular plan expense ratios;
  • tracking error and tracking difference, including their measurement dates and periods;
  • minimum investment, SIP frequency, instalment count and payment dates;
  • transaction, exit, suspension or modification rules that apply to your route; and
  • the process for changing bank details, pausing or cancelling an instruction.

SEBI investor education material advises investors to examine the offer document, risk factors and recurring expenses and to consider their financial position and risk capacity. Fund terms and screens can change, so the current AMC documents control over an older webpage, platform card or example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose by NAV or recent returns

A lower unit NAV does not make one scheme cheaper or better than another. Compare schemes tracking the same benchmark on costs, tracking quality, operating history, service and mandate convenience. Recent returns can reflect a particular market period and do not establish what the next period will deliver.

Direct versus Regular plan

Direct and Regular are different distribution routes within a mutual-fund scheme. A Direct Plan is subscribed to directly with the fund house without a distributor. A Regular Plan is routed through a distributor and includes distribution costs in its expenses. A Direct Plan may therefore have a lower expense ratio, while a Regular Plan may provide distributor assistance. The appropriate choice depends on whether that service is worth its ongoing cost and on your ability to manage the account yourself.

Point Direct Plan Regular Plan
How the subscription is routed Directly with the fund house Through a distributor
Distribution cost Not included as distributor remuneration in the same way as a Regular Plan Includes distribution costs
Documented Angel One factsheet TER 0.28%, including GST, as of 28 February 2026 1.03%, including GST, as of 28 February 2026
Who should assess it Investors comfortable handling selection, records and service requests Investors who value distributor support and accept the stated ongoing cost

The 0.28% and 1.03% figures are the Angel One Mutual Fund factsheet values for that date, not permanent rates or a promise that another scheme will have the same costs. Check the current factsheet immediately before investing. Do not switch plans merely because one has a lower historical expense ratio without understanding the account, service and transaction consequences.

Step-by-step: register the SIP

  1. Select the exact scheme and plan. On the AMC website or a platform that supports the fund, verify the scheme’s full name, Nifty Total Market benchmark and whether you are selecting Direct or Regular. Confirm that the option is open for fresh SIP registration.
  2. Complete investor onboarding. Follow the provider’s required identity, tax-residency, bank-account and investor-verification steps. Requirements differ by AMC and platform; use the current instructions shown during onboarding.
  3. Choose the option. Select Growth if your accumulation objective matches a Growth option and the current SID describes it as available. Do not select an option solely because its NAV appears lower.
  4. Enter amount and frequency. Choose a rupee amount that remains affordable after essential expenses, emergency needs and other obligations. Select monthly, weekly, fortnightly, quarterly or another frequency the scheme currently permits. Set an instalment date on which the linked account is normally funded.
  5. Authorize the payment mandate. Approve the electronic debit instruction using the provider’s bank-authentication method. The mandate authorizes recurring debits; it does not lock your money for a fixed return or make contributions compulsory in circumstances where your finances have changed.
  6. Submit the first SIP order. Review the scheme, plan, option, amount, frequency, date, bank account and mandate limit before confirming. Save the confirmation or reference number.
  7. Check registration and the first debit. Look for a successful SIP or mandate status in the AMC or platform account, and verify that the first instalment was debited and units were allotted. A mandate marked pending, rejected or cancelled is not an active SIP.
  8. Record the maintenance process. Note where the provider lets you pause, cancel, change the amount or change the bank account. Keep statements and confirmation messages so that a missed debit can be diagnosed rather than mistaken for a market loss.

Exact labels and screens differ by provider. A documented platform flow uses a SIP selection, amount and date followed by mandate completion, but the current AMC or platform interface is authoritative.

How much and how often should you invest?

There is no universally correct SIP amount. Use money that can remain invested through equity volatility, rather than an amount derived from a predicted return or a short-term target. SEBI’s investor guidance emphasizes your financial position and risk capacity. If income, debt payments, dependants or other obligations change, reassess affordability and the overall allocation instead of treating the original instruction as unbreakable.

As a dated illustration, the Angel One Mutual Fund February 2026 factsheet listed a ₹1,000 monthly SIP minimum and 12 minimum instalments. The same table listed daily instalments of ₹250 with 30 instalments, weekly ₹500 with 12, fortnightly ₹500 with 12 and quarterly ₹3,000 with four. These are scheme-specific terms as published in that factsheet; verify the current minimum and frequency rules before registering.

Frequency in the February 2026 factsheet Minimum instalment shown Minimum instalments shown
Daily ₹250 30
Weekly ₹500 12
Fortnightly ₹500 12
Monthly ₹1,000 12
Quarterly ₹3,000 4

Minimums are eligibility rules, not recommendations. A lower-frequency SIP can be easier to fund reliably; a different frequency may fit your cash-flow pattern. The important test is whether the chosen instruction remains sustainable without compromising necessary spending or reserves.

What the cost and tracking figures mean

Total expense ratio

The total expense ratio (TER) is the scheme’s recurring operating expense expressed as a percentage of assets. It is reflected in the NAV rather than usually being billed as a separate debit to your bank account. Compare Direct with Direct and Regular with Regular, and carry the factsheet date alongside every figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tracking error

Tracking error measures the variability of the difference between a fund’s return and its benchmark return over a stated period. A smaller number generally indicates closer day-to-day or period-to-period replication, but the measurement period and methodology matter. The February 2026 factsheet reported annualised tracking error of 0.06% for Direct and 0.08% for Regular as of 27 February 2026.

Tracking difference

Tracking difference is the fund’s return minus the benchmark return over a stated measurement period. A negative result means the fund lagged the benchmark for that period; it is not a forecast. The same factsheet reported -0.45% for Direct and -1.32% for Regular as of 28 February 2026. Use the period and calculation supplied in the factsheet when interpreting those values.

Measure Direct Regular Date in the February 2026 factsheet
Total expense ratio, including GST 0.28% 1.03% 28 February 2026
Annualised tracking error 0.06% 0.08% 27 February 2026
Tracking difference -0.45% -1.32% 28 February 2026

These dated scheme figures do not establish future costs or future tracking. Review later factsheets for updated values and comparable periods.

Why continue an SIP during a market fall?

SEBI Investor’s education material asks, “Why should I continue investing through SIPs in a volatile market?” The mechanical answer is that a fixed contribution buys more units when the NAV is lower and fewer when it is higher. This is often called rupee-cost averaging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The more important distinction is between process discipline and outcome certainty. The SIP can automate a contribution rule, but it cannot control equity returns. A fall can continue for an extended period. The account value can remain below your total contributions, and the scheme can lag its benchmark because of expenses and tracking. Rupee-cost averaging does not remove market risk, protect principal or guarantee a gain.

Write a fall plan before the next fall

Keep contributing when the original case still holds

Before a downturn, write down the goal for the money, the approximate time horizon, the role of this equity allocation and the circumstances that would justify a review. If the goal, horizon, finances and ability to tolerate losses remain appropriate, a price decline alone is not a reason to cancel an automated contribution.

Review when your circumstances change

Reassess if the money is needed sooner than planned, income becomes unreliable, essential obligations rise or your willingness and capacity to bear losses have materially changed. The response may be to reduce, pause or redirect contributions and revisit your broader allocation. “Stay invested” is not a universal instruction to ignore changed circumstances.

Do not try to call the bottom

Stopping an SIP while waiting for a perfect entry point creates a timing decision that the recurring process was designed to avoid. Restarting after prices appear to have recovered can also mean missing intervening purchases. No date for a recovery can be promised, so base the decision on your plan and risk capacity rather than a prediction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a defined review schedule

Choose a practical review interval, such as the date you already use to check your budget and statements, instead of monitoring every daily price move. At each review, verify that the mandate is active, the amount is affordable, the scheme still tracks the intended index and the current documents have not changed a material term.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Assuming every Nifty fund is a Total Market fund. Read the objective and benchmark; correct the selection before authorizing the mandate.
  • Using an old platform card as the source of terms. Confirm minimums, instalment counts, costs and availability in the current SID, addenda and factsheet.
  • Choosing Regular or Direct accidentally. Check the plan label on the final order and compare the current cost with the service you expect.
  • Treating an expense ratio or tracking figure as permanent. Record its date and measurement period; inspect newer factsheets.
  • Increasing the amount after a fall to “buy the dip.” Only change the amount after checking affordability, goal horizon and risk capacity; do not base it on a forecast.
  • Cancelling solely because the NAV fell. Revisit the written fall plan and distinguish a market movement from a change in your financial circumstances.
  • Ignoring a failed mandate. Check bank balance, mandate status, debit limits and provider messages. A failed instalment is an operational issue, not evidence that the strategy has earned or lost money.
  • Assuming an SIP guarantees a result. The scheme can lose value, remain below contributions and fail to exactly match its benchmark.

A final pre-submission checklist

  • Does the fund’s current objective explicitly identify the Nifty Total Market Index or TRI?
  • Have you read the current SID, addenda and factsheet?
  • Did you record the plan, option, TER, tracking information and their dates?
  • Is the amount affordable through a prolonged fall?
  • Are the frequency, date, bank account and mandate limit correct?
  • Do you know how to confirm, pause, modify or cancel the instruction?
  • Have you written the conditions under which you will review the investment?
  • Are you avoiding return forecasts and treating the investment as market-linked?
