A sealed box or an Amazon listing is not proof by itself. Never use a wallet that arrives with a PIN or recovery phrase already configured, and never type your recovery phrase into a phone, computer, app, website, or support form.
This guide explains how to inspect a new device, install the official Ledger Wallet app, create and protect your wallet, verify the Secure Element, approve transactions safely, and recover when a backup or device is lost.

What a secure Ledger setup is designed to protect
A hardware wallet keeps the private keys used to authorize transactions inside the device’s Secure Element. Your computer or phone can display balances and prepare transactions, but the device is intended to require physical approval before a transaction is signed. That separation reduces the chance that malware on a connected computer can silently substitute an address or approve a transfer.
The wallet is controlled through the device and its PIN rather than through an account password. Ledger describes the arrangement this way: “Ledger never holds your assets, and there is no account, email or password — access is through your device and your PIN.” The assets remain recorded on their respective blockchains; the device protects the keys that authorize movement of those assets.

- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Security still depends on your actions. A genuine device cannot protect a recovery phrase that you photograph, upload, type into a fake support page, or give to another person. Likewise, a correct device check does not make an untrusted seller, a compromised phone, or an incorrectly verified transaction safe.
Check the seller and package before connecting the device
Purchase from Ledger or a Ledger-authorized reseller whenever possible. Ledger identifies official Amazon storefronts in some markets, but an Amazon purchase is not automatically authorized: marketplace listings can be supplied by different sellers, and unauthorized supply chains add risk. Check the seller shown on the order page, the destination country, and the current authorized-store information before paying.
Inspect the shipping box and product packaging before plugging anything in. Look for opened seals, replaced labels, damaged packaging, or signs that the device was removed and repacked. A suspicious package is a stop signal, not a reason to continue with a “test.” Contact Ledger Support through an official channel and explain the condition of the package.

Install Ledger Wallet without following a fake link
Download Ledger Wallet only from Ledger’s official device-setup page or the official iOS and Android stores. Do not use a download link supplied by a marketplace seller, social-media account, unsolicited support message, pop-up, or email claiming that you must update immediately. Verify the publisher and app name in the store before installing.
Keep your operating system current, use a device you control, and avoid setting up a new wallet on a public or shared computer. The app is the interface for installing asset applications and preparing transactions; it is not a place to enter the recovery phrase.
Step-by-step: initialize a new Ledger wallet
1. Connect and unlock the device
Open Ledger Wallet, connect the device, and follow the onboarding prompts. The device should ask you to create a PIN rather than present one that somebody else selected. If the app reports an unusual state, an existing wallet, or a security warning, stop and contact official support instead of trying random resets.
2. Install the current firmware or Ledger OS
When Ledger Wallet offers a firmware or Ledger OS update, read the prompt and complete it through the app. Keep the device connected during the update and follow the on-screen instructions. Afterward, open My Ledger and install the applications for the assets you actually intend to manage. Firmware and asset compatibility can vary by device generation, so rely on the version and compatibility information shown for your model rather than an old tutorial.

- This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
3. Create a private PIN
The device asks you to choose and confirm a PIN. Select it yourself, keep it private, and do not reuse an easily guessed code. Never accept a PIN supplied on a card, in an email, or by a seller. Do not type the PIN into a website or tell support staff. Anyone who obtains the PIN and the physical device may be able to access the wallet, so store the device where others cannot use it.
4. Generate the Secret Recovery Phrase on the device
For a new wallet, the device generates the Secret Recovery Phrase and displays it on its secure screen. Write every word on the supplied recovery sheet, in the exact order shown. The device may generate 12, 18, or 24 words; record the complete sequence for the length it presents.
Write by hand while reading the device screen. Check each word before moving on, and make sure the handwriting is unambiguous. Do not replace a word with a synonym, “correct” spelling from memory, or a word from a list supplied by anyone else. The phrase is the backup that can recreate control of the wallet, so possession of it is equivalent to possession of the keys.

- Keep the sheet offline and physically protected from theft, fire, water, and casual discovery.
- Do not photograph or scan the phrase.
- Do not type it into a computer, phone, notes app, password manager, cloud drive, form, or browser extension.
- Do not email, message, or dictate it to another person.
- Do not give it to Ledger Support or any other support representative.
Ledger’s explicit warning is: “Furthermore, a genuine Ledger signer never asks you to enter your recovery phrase on a computer, phone, app, or website.” Treat any request to do so as a scam, even if the message uses Ledger’s name or logo.
5. Confirm the words on the device
After displaying the phrase, the device tests selected words. Complete this check on the device, not in the app. It is designed to catch transcription errors before you receive funds. If a word is wrong, use the device’s setup flow to correct the record rather than editing a digital copy, because no digital copy should exist.
6. Complete Genuine Check
Ledger Wallet sends a challenge to the device. The genuine Secure Element returns a cryptographic signature, which Ledger verifies. The app should report that the device is genuine. Complete this check during initial setup and stop if it fails or produces an unexpected warning.
Genuine Check establishes the authenticity of the device’s Secure Element. It is not a complete forensic inspection of every physical component and cannot detect every unauthorized modification when the original Secure Element remains intact. That is why the sales channel, package condition, initialization state, and on-device behavior all matter in addition to the cryptographic check.

7. Install only the asset applications you need
Use My Ledger to install the applications required for your assets. Install them through Ledger Wallet rather than from files or links sent by another person. If an asset or network is not shown as compatible with your model and current firmware, do not improvise with an unofficial application.

How to verify a transaction before approving it
When you prepare a transaction, compare the destination address and amount shown on the device’s secure screen with the details you intended to send. Scroll through the complete address where the device requires it; do not rely solely on the computer or phone display. Malware can alter an address in the software interface while leaving the hardware screen as the final independent check.
- Prepare the transaction in Ledger Wallet or the compatible asset interface.
- Wait for the device to display the destination address and amount.
- Compare those values with the trusted recipient details you obtained independently.
- Reject the transaction if even one character, amount, or network detail is unexpected.
- Approve only by using the device’s physical controls.
Never approve a transaction merely because an app says it is urgent, because a support agent is waiting, or because the address looks familiar on your monitor. A hardware wallet protects the signing key; it cannot decide whether you are sending to the right person.
How to tell whether a Ledger device is genuine
Use several independent signals rather than one visual clue:
- Trusted source: Ledger or a reseller Ledger identifies as authorized for your market.
- Unaltered package: no unexplained opening, replacement labels, or missing contents.
- Fresh initialization: the device asks you to choose a PIN and generate a phrase.
- Successful Genuine Check: Ledger Wallet verifies the Secure Element’s cryptographic response.
- Normal approval behavior: transaction details appear on the device and require physical confirmation.
None of these signals substitutes for the others. A counterfeit or tampered device may imitate packaging, and an authentic device bought through an unauthorized channel may have been handled improperly. If the device arrives initialized, fails Genuine Check, or asks you to use a prewritten phrase, do not attempt to “make it safe” by resetting it and continuing. Preserve the evidence and contact official support.
Recovery phrase checks and common setup failures
The recovery check fails
Ledger says a failed recovery check can be retried. Before retrying, verify the phrase length, exact order, spelling, and whether every word belongs to the BIP39 word list. Compare the device’s requested positions with your handwritten sheet; do not guess based on a similar-looking word.
If the check continues to fail, assume the backup may be wrong. A phrase that cannot be reproduced accurately may not restore the accounts you expect. While you still have access to the device and accounts, follow Ledger’s recovery procedure to move assets to accounts controlled by a newly generated phrase, then create and verify a new backup. Do not publish or send the suspected phrase while asking for help.
The device will not pass Genuine Check
Disconnect it, record the exact message, and contact Ledger Support through an official channel. Do not install firmware from a third-party link, enter the phrase into a troubleshooting website, or accept a remote-support request that asks for the phrase or PIN. A failed check is a reason to stop, not a prompt to bypass security.
The package or device looks altered after purchase
Do not initialize it or transfer funds to accounts created on it. Photographing the package for a retailer or carrier may be appropriate, but never photograph the recovery phrase because it should not exist yet. Resolve the seller and device issue first through official support.

What to do if the device is lost or fails
You can restore the wallet on a replacement Ledger using the Secret Recovery Phrase. Use the replacement’s official setup flow and enter the phrase only on the replacement device itself, never into an online wallet, browser form, phone, or computer. The restored accounts correspond to the phrase; the physical device is replaceable, but the phrase is not.
If you cannot find the phrase, do not experiment with random words or third-party “recovery” services. Without the correct phrase or an operating device that still controls the accounts, recovery may not be possible. Anyone promising to recover funds after receiving the phrase is asking for the critical secret.
What to do if the recovery phrase may have been exposed
Treat an exposed phrase as a compromised wallet, even if no funds have moved. If you still control the device, generate a new wallet and move assets to accounts governed by the new phrase. Confirm every destination on the device screen. After the transfers are complete, reset the device and set it up as new, recording the newly generated phrase offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFollow Ledger Support’s current procedure for resetting and moving assets. Do not disclose the old or new phrase to support, a seller, a friend, or a website. If the phrase was photographed, typed into a device, stored in cloud storage, or entered into an online wallet, assume the exposure is permanent.
Buying through Amazon: a practical safety decision
An Amazon listing can be acceptable only when the actual seller is an official Ledger storefront or a reseller Ledger authorizes in your market. Marketplace fulfillment, a high rating, a low price, or a “new” condition label does not establish authorization. Verify the seller before ordering and repeat the package, initialization, and Genuine Check inspections immediately after delivery.
If the seller is unclear, the listing redirects you to an external setup page, or the price and terms look designed to rush you, choose a clearly authorized channel instead. The small convenience of an uncertain listing is not worth risking a wallet whose recovery phrase controls funds.
How to compare Ledger models before buying
Model names and availability change by country and product generation. Compare the specifications shown for the exact model and region at the time of purchase, using these decision points:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it affects setup and use |
|---|---|---|
| Secure-screen type | Can you read the full address and amount clearly on the device? | Transaction verification depends on the hardware screen, not just the companion app. |
| Operating-system support | Does the model support your desktop or mobile operating system? | An unsupported host can prevent firmware updates or asset-app installation. |
| Connectivity | Does it support the connection method you plan to use? | Compatibility affects how you connect for setup, updates, and approvals. |
| Firmware and asset compatibility | Does the current firmware support the networks and applications you need? | Support can differ by model and change with new firmware. |
| Backup and recovery options | Can you store the physical recovery sheet securely, and do you have a tested recovery plan? | The phrase, not the model, is what restores the wallet after loss or failure. |
| Size and portability | Will you carry it frequently or store it in one secure location? | Portability changes the risk of loss, theft, and accidental exposure. |
| Purchase channel | Is the seller authorized for your country? | Supply-chain confidence is part of authenticity verification. |
Do not choose a model solely from an old comparison article. Confirm current support, firmware requirements, and regional availability before ordering.
A final pre-funding checklist
- You bought from Ledger or a reseller Ledger identifies as authorized in your market.
- The package and device showed no unexplained alteration.
- You installed Ledger Wallet from an official source.
- You created the PIN yourself.
- The device generated the recovery phrase and you wrote it offline, in order.
- You completed the device’s phrase confirmation successfully.
- Genuine Check reported that the device is genuine.
- You know where the physical recovery sheet is stored and who can access it.
- You can read and compare transaction details on the device screen.
Only after all nine checks pass should you transfer funds. If any check fails, pause and resolve that issue through official support rather than trying to bypass it.
