You can give an old or spare Android phone internet access in two practical ways: connect it to your main phone’s hotspot, or activate a separate data-only SIM or eSIM in the companion phone. A hotspot takes minutes and uses the main phone’s plan, but the phones must stay near each other and the main phone must remain powered and covered. A data-only line gives the companion its own connection, but requires an unlocked, compatible handset, carrier activation, and a separate or shared data allowance.
Neither method automatically gives the companion phone the main phone’s cellular number. A data-only service should not be treated as a normal voice line or SMS plan; use internet calling and messaging apps unless the carrier explicitly includes cellular voice and texts.

Choose the design that fits how you will use the phone
Start by deciding whether the companion phone will normally be beside your main phone or operate independently. That decision determines the cost, reliability, battery behavior, and setup work.

| Setup effort | Usually a few minutes: enable Wi-Fi hotspot and join it from the second phone. | Requires an unlocked, compatible phone, a carrier line, activation, and SIM or eSIM installation. |
| Connection dependency | The main phone must be nearby, powered, and connected to its mobile network. | The companion connects directly to the data provider’s network. |
| Plan and cost | Uses the main plan’s tethering allowance. The carrier may impose a separate hotspot cap, throttle, or fee. | Uses a separate plan or an eligible shared-data line. Pricing and allowances vary by carrier and region. |

| Best fit | Occasional use, travel, testing, or a companion kept close to you. | Frequent independent use, navigation, travel, or a phone that must work while the main phone is elsewhere. |
Use a hotspot when convenience matters most
Choose tethering if you only need the spare phone online occasionally, want to avoid another monthly line, or are testing an old handset. It is also useful when you are traveling and already have a suitable data package on the main phone. The trade-off is that a dead, distant, or out-of-coverage main phone takes the companion offline.

Use a data-only SIM when the companion must stand on its own
A separate SIM or eSIM is better for a navigation phone, a travel handset, a child’s limited-data device, or any phone that will be left behind while the main phone stays with you. You pay for and manage another data allowance, but the companion no longer depends on a nearby hotspot.
Check these requirements before changing anything
Confirm the phone is unlocked
A carrier-locked Android phone may reject a SIM from another provider even when the SIM is the correct size. Check the original carrier’s account or support documentation for its unlock status and eligibility. An unlocked phone is still required to support the provider’s network bands and software configuration.
Check network, SIM, and eSIM compatibility
Compare the exact model number—not just the phone’s marketing name—with the data provider’s compatibility list. Verify supported cellular bands, the required physical SIM size, and whether that model has an eSIM function. Android menus and eSIM capabilities vary by model, Android version, manufacturer, carrier, and region. Some newer regional variants are eSIM-only, while other variants have a physical tray and no eSIM.
Review the main plan if you will tether
Before relying on a hotspot, confirm that your plan permits tethering. Ask whether hotspot data has its own allowance, speed limit, roaming restriction, or extra charge. A phone can show a working hotspot switch while the carrier still blocks or limits tethering on the account.
Prepare power and account access
Have the carrier account credentials, activation code or QR code, a Wi-Fi connection for eSIM downloads, and a SIM-ejection tool if you are installing a physical card. Keep both phones charged. Long hotspot sessions are especially demanding; Google recommends plugging devices in while tethering, and Samsung warns that hotspot use consumes battery and data.

Route A: turn the main Android phone into a hotspot
Android’s labels differ by manufacturer and version, but the standard path on current Pixel-style software is Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. Samsung and other manufacturers may place the equivalent control under Connections or Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
Set up Wi-Fi tethering
- On the phone that has the cellular data plan, turn on mobile data. If mobile data is off, the hotspot may be visible but cannot provide internet access.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot, or use the manufacturer’s equivalent menu.
- Turn on Wi-Fi hotspot. Open the hotspot details to view or change the network name and password.
- Give the network a recognizable name that does not reveal sensitive personal information. Replace a default password with a long, unique password before connecting other devices.
- On the companion phone, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet or the Wi-Fi control, select the hotspot name, enter the password, and wait for the Wi-Fi icon to appear.
- Open a browser or another app on the companion phone and load a page. This confirms that the phone has internet access rather than merely being associated with the hotspot.
Google Pixel Help describes the feature this way: “You can use your phone’s mobile data to connect another phone, tablet, or computer to the internet.” The companion is using the main phone as a Wi-Fi gateway; it is not receiving the main phone’s SIM or cellular number.
Use Bluetooth tethering when Wi-Fi is inconvenient
Android also supports Bluetooth tethering. Turn on Bluetooth on both phones, pair them in Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device (the wording varies), then enable Bluetooth tethering under the main phone’s Hotspot & tethering menu. Bluetooth generally offers lower throughput than Wi-Fi, but it can be useful for light data use and may consume less power in some situations.
Use USB tethering for a wired connection
- Connect the two phones with a data-capable USB cable. A charge-only cable will not work.
- On the source phone, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering.
- Turn on USB tethering. The switch may remain unavailable until Android detects a suitable cable and connection.
- Confirm internet access on the companion device. Disconnect the cable and switch USB tethering off when finished.
USB tethering is most useful when the phones remain together and you want to avoid a wireless network. It does not remove the carrier’s tethering limits.
Keep a hotspot usable during long sessions
- Plug the source phone into a charger or power bank. Hotspot operation keeps the Wi-Fi radio active and can raise power consumption.
- Check the hotspot’s automatic timeout setting. A short timeout saves battery but can interrupt a session when the companion phone is idle.
- Place the phones where the source phone has good cellular reception. A strong Wi-Fi signal between the phones cannot compensate for poor mobile coverage.
- Watch the main plan’s hotspot meter and carrier notifications. Streaming, operating-system updates, and cloud backups on the companion can consume the allowance quickly.
- Turn the hotspot off when finished so nearby devices cannot continue using the connection and the source phone does not keep broadcasting.
Route B: install and activate a data-only SIM or eSIM
A data-only line is a mobile-data service attached to the companion phone. The provider may sell it as a tablet, connected-device, or data-only plan. Treat the provider’s activation instructions as authoritative because account binding, supported devices, APN settings, and roaming behavior differ.

Activate an eSIM with a QR code
- Connect the companion phone to reliable Wi-Fi. The phone needs internet access to download an eSIM profile.
- Confirm that the exact handset model supports eSIM and is unlocked for the chosen provider.
- Open the carrier’s account or activation page and select its tablet or data-only-device option. Complete any identity or device checks the provider requires.
- On the Android phone, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and choose Add SIM or Download a SIM instead? The label depends on the model.
- Choose the QR-code option and scan the code supplied by the carrier. Follow the prompts to download and enable the profile.
- Set the new profile as the mobile-data SIM, turn off Wi-Fi temporarily, and test a web page. Re-enable Wi-Fi after testing if you want to conserve cellular data.
Do not photograph or share an unused activation QR code. Many providers treat it as a one-time credential; if the scan fails, request a replacement through the carrier rather than repeatedly guessing at settings.
Activate a physical data-only SIM
- Obtain the provider’s data-only SIM in the size required by the phone, usually nano-SIM on recent Android models.
- Use the activation code, package instructions, or carrier account flow to create or enable the line. Google Fi’s documented process, for example, uses a code from the package before inserting the SIM.
- Power down the companion phone if the manufacturer recommends it. Insert the SIM with the supplied ejection tool; never force the tray.
- Restart the phone and wait for it to register on the network. This can take several minutes after first activation.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the new line, and make sure mobile data is enabled for it.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and test data. If the provider requires a particular APN, enter only the values it supplies.
A physical card can be tied to the device recorded in the carrier account. Google Fi Wireless Help states: “To use a physical Data Only SIM in a different device, first remove it from your current device’s account settings.” If you move a card, disconnect it from the old device in the carrier account, clear any carrier-app storage the provider specifies, insert it in the new phone, and activate it again. Other carriers may use a different release process.
Handle APN settings carefully
The access point name (APN) tells Android how to reach the provider’s data network. Do not copy an APN from a different carrier or a random forum. Check the APN only when the provider instructs you to do so, and enter every field exactly as supplied. An incorrect APN can produce a signal indicator with no usable data.
Configure dual-SIM and eSIM defaults
On Pixel phones, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs to add or manage SIMs and choose defaults for calls, texts, and mobile data. Other manufacturers use similar controls under their SIM manager or Connections settings.
Understand the three separate defaults
- Calls: choose which line starts outgoing cellular calls, or ask Android to prompt you each time when supported.
- Texts: choose the line used for SMS and MMS.
- Mobile data: choose the SIM that supplies cellular internet.
Pixel documentation specifies that only one SIM can be the default for mobile data at a time. You can change that default, but both profiles do not normally provide simultaneous cellular data. A data-only profile can therefore be selected for internet while a separate voice-capable profile remains the default for calls and texts on a dual-SIM phone.

Check regional and model limitations
Dual-SIM combinations, eSIM plus physical SIM operation, and switching behavior depend on the exact model, Android release, carrier, and region. Read the specifications for the model number sold in your market before buying a physical SIM accessory. If the phone is eSIM-only, a physical card cannot be added with an adapter.
What the companion phone can and cannot do
Internet applications work normally
Once connected through a hotspot or data-only line, the phone can browse the web, use maps, sync email, receive app notifications, stream media, and use internet-based calling or messaging services. Each app still needs its own account, permissions, and data connection.
Ordinary cellular calls and SMS are not automatic
A hotspot shares internet access, not the main phone’s cellular subscription. A data-only SIM likewise provides internet access unless the provider explicitly includes voice and messaging. Do not advertise the companion as a normal phone line based only on a working signal icon. If you need calls, use an internet calling app or obtain a voice-capable line and verify that the handset and provider support it.
Coverage and roaming follow the active service
With a hotspot, coverage follows the main phone’s carrier. With a data-only SIM, coverage, roaming eligibility, and speed policies follow the data provider and the companion’s supported bands. A phone can be unlocked yet still lack the frequencies needed for reliable service in a particular country or rural area.

The hotspot switch is missing or disabled
- Verify that mobile data is on and the source phone has a usable cellular signal.
- Turn off Data Saver if the Android version requires it for tethering.
- Check the carrier account for a tethering block, separate hotspot allowance, throttle, or unpaid balance.
- Restart the source phone after changing the plan or SIM. Carrier provisioning may not update until the next registration.
The companion sees the hotspot but cannot connect
- Re-enter the password carefully and remove the saved network before trying again.
- Use the 2.4 GHz hotspot band for an older companion phone that cannot join a 5 GHz network.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or private-DNS configuration on the companion while diagnosing. Restore it after the connection works.
- Move the phones closer together and test with another Wi-Fi device to determine whether the fault is the source phone or the companion.
The SIM shows “No service”
- Confirm that the handset is unlocked, supported by the provider, and compatible with the SIM size and network bands.
- Check that the line was activated successfully and that Airplane mode is off.
- Remove and reinsert the physical SIM without forcing the tray, then restart the phone.
- For eSIM, verify that the profile appears under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and is enabled.
Data connects but apps cannot reach the internet
- Check the provider’s APN instructions and do not substitute settings from another network.
- Review Android’s data limit, Data Saver, and per-app background-data controls.
- Check whether roaming must be enabled for the location and whether the plan has exhausted its high-speed allowance.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and test a simple web page to separate a cellular problem from an app-specific problem.
Moving a physical data-only SIM fails
Return to the provider’s account page and disconnect the SIM from the old device before inserting it into the new one. Some providers bind a physical data-only card to the previous device until it is released. Follow the provider’s exact reactivation sequence, including any required carrier-app storage reset.

The battery drains unusually fast
- Shorten the hotspot timeout and turn tethering off when finished.
- Keep the source phone on a charger or use a power bank during long sessions.
- Reduce background syncing and automatic app updates on the companion while using a limited hotspot allowance.
- For a separate data-only line, check which phone is consuming power; each handset has its own cellular radio and battery load.
Practical setups for common use cases
Occasional backup phone
Use the hotspot route. Store the companion with Wi-Fi networks saved for home and work, then connect it to the main phone only when needed. This avoids a second line and keeps activation simple.
Travel or navigation phone
Choose based on separation. If both phones will stay together in a vehicle or bag, a hotspot is usually sufficient. If the navigation phone may be used away from the main handset, activate a compatible data-only SIM or eSIM and confirm roaming terms before departure.
Phone kept for a child or a specific task
A data-only line can provide predictable internet access without adding a voice number, provided the provider supports the device and the plan’s data allowance fits the expected use. Apply Android’s data limit and review app permissions so background video or updates do not consume the allowance unexpectedly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Testing an older Android handset
Start with a hotspot. It confirms that the handset’s Wi-Fi, battery, and apps still work without committing to a SIM activation. If the phone will become a permanent independent device, check its unlock status, network bands, and eSIM or physical-SIM support before choosing a plan.
Maintenance checklist
- Record which SIM or eSIM is assigned to which device in the carrier account.
- Review data usage and hotspot allowances at least once each billing cycle.
- Install Android and carrier updates when the phone is connected to trusted Wi-Fi.
- Keep the hotspot password private and change it if an unknown device appears.
- Before selling or recycling the companion, remove the eSIM profile, sign out of accounts, erase the device, and remove any physical SIM.
- When changing providers, confirm the new provider’s compatibility and APN requirements instead of assuming the old settings will work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a data-only SIM receive verification texts?
Not reliably. A data-only service should not be assumed to support SMS, including verification messages, unless the provider explicitly documents SMS capability for that line and device.
Can I use the main phone’s number on the companion?
Not through hotspot sharing alone. The companion can use internet calling or messaging apps, but the main phone’s cellular number remains associated with its own SIM or eSIM.
Do I need to turn off the main SIM when using a data-only SIM?
No. On a dual-SIM phone, keep both profiles enabled and select the data-only profile under the mobile-data setting. Android generally uses one SIM as the mobile-data default at a time.
Why does a data-only SIM work in one Android phone but not another?
The second phone may be locked, unsupported on the provider’s bands, missing the required SIM size or eSIM capability, or still linked to the previous device in the carrier account.
