Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo set up a Bluetooth wallet tracker, charge it, enable the phone settings required by its finding network, and pair it in that network’s app. To measure its practical range, keep the same phone, tracker orientation, and route while walking away in fixed increments. Record the farthest distance at which the tracker can repeatedly connect or ring, then repeat the test in open air and with the tracker inside your wallet. A manufacturer’s maximum is an ideal-condition claim, not a guaranteed everyday radius.
Understand what a Bluetooth wallet tracker can—and cannot—measure
A Bluetooth wallet tracker communicates directly with your phone when the two devices are nearby. The finding app can usually show a nearby status or trigger a sound. When the tracker is no longer within a usable Bluetooth connection, the app may rely on a wider finding network, depending on the model and the network you selected during setup.

Bluetooth range is not a fixed circle around your phone. Walls, the tracker’s position inside a wallet, your body, nearby Bluetooth devices, and Wi-Fi equipment can all change the result. Chipolo says Bluetooth is most effective at about 30 feet (10 meters), while some of its models may reach 400 feet (120 meters) with a clear line of sight. Pebblebee lists up to 500 feet for Card 5 under ideal conditions. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not independent head-to-head measurements.
An out-of-range alert is also not a measuring instrument. Chipolo states that Bluetooth cannot provide an exact range, that alert timing can be delayed, and that its out-of-range alerts do not apply to trackers paired through Apple Find My. Treat an alert as evidence that the connection state changed, not as a precise distance reading.

Check compatibility before you open the package
The exact model determines which app and finding network you must use. Two products from the same company may use the company’s own app, Apple Find My, or Google’s finding app. Confirm the model name printed on the device or packaging and read its setup instructions before pairing.
Choose one supported finding network
Pebblebee Card 5 can be set up with either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, but it cannot be active on both networks at the same time. Choose the network that matches the phone you intend to carry and complete that network’s setup first. Adding the manufacturer’s companion app comes afterward if you want its additional features.
Check phone requirements
For Card 5, an iPhone setup requires Bluetooth for Apple Find My. An Android setup requires Bluetooth and Location for Google Find Hub. Both setup paths also need internet access. Chipolo’s support material says its regular app requires Bluetooth 4.0 or later, Android 9 or later, or iOS 14 or later; verify the current requirement for the exact Chipolo model because app and operating-system support can change.

Check physical fit and charging
Card-style trackers are designed to fit in a wallet’s card slot, but thickness and placement still matter. Pebblebee lists Card 5 at 85 × 54 × 1.74 millimeters and 14 grams, with wireless charging and battery life of up to 18 months depending on use. Its support page contains conflicting water-resistance information—IP68 in the specification list and IP66 in the explanatory section—so do not rely on either rating without confirming the current product documentation.
Set up the tracker step by step
- Charge the tracker. Start with a full charge or the charge level recommended by the manufacturer. A low battery can make a range test look like a connection problem.
- Prepare the phone. Turn on Bluetooth. On Android, turn on Location for a Google Find Hub setup. Connect the phone to the internet and keep it unlocked during pairing.
- Open the correct finding app. Use Apple Find My, Google Find Hub, or the manufacturer’s app specified for your exact model. Do not assume that a similarly named card uses the same app.
- Keep the tracker close. Place the card next to the phone and follow the on-screen add-device instructions. Stay close until the app confirms the pairing.
- Select the network. If the model supports more than one network, choose one. Card 5 cannot remain active on Apple Find My and Google Find Hub simultaneously.
- Finish the platform setup first. Give the tracker a recognizable name and complete any prompts in the finding network. For Card 5, the manufacturer’s guide specifies setting up the platform network before adding its companion app.
- Add the companion app only if needed. Install and pair with the manufacturer’s app after the platform setup if you want its extra controls or account features. This does not turn a single-network tracker into a dual-network device.
- Test while the tracker is still nearby. Use the app’s sound, ring, or nearby-finding function. The tracker should respond before you move it into the wallet.
- Repeat with normal placement. Put the tracker in the card slot where you normally carry it and trigger the nearby function again. If it works outside the wallet but not inside it, record the placement as part of your operating conditions.
Confirm a baseline connection before measuring range
A range result is meaningful only if the setup is stable at the starting point. With the tracker charged and in its normal wallet position, leave the app open and confirm that the nearby status is available or that the tracker rings. If it does not respond at arm’s length, stop and fix the setup before walking away.
- Confirm that the selected account and finding network show the tracker as added.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled for the entire test.
- On Android, leave Location enabled when the selected setup requires it.
- Use the same phone for every run if you are comparing conditions or models.
- Note whether the tracker is bare, in a wallet, or behind other cards.
Run a repeatable Bluetooth range test
The following protocol is a practical comparison method, not a standardized laboratory test. It controls the variables identified in manufacturer support material so that your result describes your own phone, tracker, wallet, and environment.

- Choose the test route. Use a clear, measured path where you can stop at consistent intervals. An open-air route is useful for a best-case local comparison; an indoor route shows the conditions in which you are likely to lose a wallet.
- Fix the starting conditions. Begin with the phone and tracker together, the app open, and a successful nearby connection. Keep the phone at the same height and in the same hand or pocket for every run.
- Set fixed increments. Walk away by equal distances rather than estimating by eye. At each mark, try the same nearby-find or ring action and record whether it responds reliably.
- Define “working” before you start. Count a point as working only when the app can reliably connect or make the tracker ring. A single delayed response or momentary reconnection should not be treated as the usable limit.
- Find the repeatable limit. Continue until the tracker fails, then return to the last successful mark and test it again. The farthest repeatable success—not one lucky connection—is the result for that run.
- Repeat from the beginning. Walk back to the starting point and run the same route again. Repeating the run helps separate a stable limit from a temporary connection.
- Repeat in normal wallet conditions. Place the card in the wallet slot you use every day and repeat the same route. Keep the wallet orientation and the person carrying it consistent.
- Test a second environment. If your first run was outdoors, repeat indoors or among the walls and devices that normally surround you. Keep the increments and pass/fail rule unchanged.
- Record the conditions. Write down the tracker model, phone, app or network, route, obstacles, wallet placement, orientation, and result for each run.
Use a simple results sheet
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Tracker | Exact model and whether it was bare or inside the wallet |
| Phone | Phone model used for every run |
| Finding system | Manufacturer app, Apple Find My, or Google Find Hub |
| Route | Open air, room-to-room, corridor, or another described path |
| Obstacles | Walls, doors, furniture, people, and nearby Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices |
| Increment | Distance between each check point |
| Last repeatable success | Farthest point that responded reliably on repeated runs |
| Alert behavior | Whether an out-of-range notification appeared and when |
If you compare two cards, use the same phone, route, increments, wallet position, and success rule for both. A manufacturer’s “up to” figure should remain in a separate column from your measured result; it is not a head-to-head test result.
Interpret the numbers without overclaiming
| Published figure | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 30 ft (10 m) | Chipolo says Bluetooth is most effective at this distance. | Use it as a general expectation for effective nearby operation, not a guaranteed cutoff. |
| Up to 400 ft (120 m) | Chipolo says some models may reach this distance with clear line of sight. | Consider it a favorable-condition maximum that may not apply indoors or inside a wallet. |
| Up to 500 ft | Pebblebee lists this for Card 5 under ideal conditions. | Compare your measured result only after recording route, obstacles, phone, network, and wallet placement. |
No independent, named study or controlled comparative range test is established for these figures. The numbers come from manufacturer support or product pages, and the publication year of the cited support pages is not stated. Your repeatable result is therefore useful for your own carrying conditions, while the advertised maximum is useful only as a manufacturer’s ideal-condition reference.
Why the wallet result can be shorter
Chipolo identifies other Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi devices, and thicker walls as possible interference sources. A wallet adds another layer between the tracker and phone and may change the card’s orientation as you walk. If the open-air run is longer than the wallet run, that difference is an environmental result, not proof that the tracker is defective.

What an out-of-range alert tells you
An alert tells you that the app detected a change in connectivity according to its own timing and surroundings. It does not reveal an exact number of feet or meters. Chipolo specifically notes that alerts can be delayed and that its out-of-range alerts do not apply when the tracker is paired through Apple Find My. Use the alert as a reminder to check the last known location, not as a substitute for the measured-distance procedure.

The tracker will not pair
- Check the model’s required network and app; a card intended for Apple Find My may not appear in Google Find Hub, and vice versa.
- Move the tracker next to the phone and restart the add-device flow.
- Confirm that Bluetooth is on and that the phone has internet access.
- On Android, turn on Location when the selected setup requires it.
- If the tracker was already assigned to another network, follow the manufacturer’s removal or reset procedure before attempting a new pairing.
The tracker paired but will not ring nearby
- Check the app’s device status and keep the app open while testing.
- Bring the phone and tracker together to establish a baseline connection.
- Try the tracker both outside the wallet and in its normal slot to identify a placement issue.
- Recharge the tracker before interpreting the failure as a range limit.
The measured distance is much shorter than the advertised maximum
- Repeat in open air with clear line of sight.
- Remove the wallet for one run, then repeat with the wallet in its normal position.
- Record thick walls, doors, nearby Wi-Fi equipment, and other Bluetooth devices.
- Use the same phone and orientation for every run and count only repeatable responses.
The alert arrives late or not at all
Do not convert the alert into a distance estimate. Its timing depends on surroundings and connection factors, and Apple Find My pairing does not use Chipolo’s out-of-range-alert feature. Rely on the app’s documented finding behavior for the selected network and use your repeated ring test for local range.
Choose a tracker by the conditions you can verify
For a wallet purchase, compare the exact model rather than the brand name. The useful questions are whether it works with your phone and preferred finding network, whether its dimensions fit your card slot, how it is charged or replaced, and how its claimed range is qualified.

| Decision factor | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Phone and network | Does this model pair with the phone and finding network you will actually use? |
| Wallet fit | Do the stated dimensions and thickness fit your wallet without forcing the slot? |
| Power | Is the tracker rechargeable, and does the stated battery life depend on use? |
| Local finding | Can the app make the card ring or show a nearby status when you are close? |
| Range claim | Is the number described as effective, maximum, clear-line-of-sight, or ideal-condition range? |
| Your result | What is the farthest repeatable distance in the wallet and environment where you carry it? |
Card 5 is one example of a rechargeable wallet-form tracker: Pebblebee lists wireless charging, up to 18 months of battery life depending on use, and support for either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub. Chipolo’s wallet-form products include models paired with its own app as well as Spot devices using Apple Find My and Point devices using Google’s finding app. Verify the current requirements and network for the specific model before buying.
Keep the test useful over time
Run the same route again after changing one variable, such as wallet placement or phone, rather than changing everything at once. Keep your original results sheet so you can tell whether a shorter result follows a new environment, a different network, or a change in the tracker’s condition. If the card fails at the starting point after previously working there, recharge it and repeat the baseline check before drawing a range conclusion.
