Set the maximum dollar amount you can lose before you enter, place the stop where your trade thesis is invalidated, and calculate position size from that stop distance. A stop price is only a trigger—not a guaranteed exit price. Stocks can gap through a stop, while crypto can move sharply at any hour and leveraged products can magnify the loss. Use order mechanics, liquidity, correlation and portfolio-wide limits together rather than relying on a universal stop-loss percentage.
What a stop-loss actually does
A stop-loss is an instruction to exit a position after the market reaches a specified trigger price. For a long position, that normally means a sell stop below the current price. For a short position, it means a buy stop above the current price.

The trigger does not promise that you will receive that price. The SEC Investor Bulletin explains that short-term fluctuations can activate a stop and that the execution price may differ significantly from the stop price. Its wording is explicit: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.”

Start with a loss budget, not a percentage
Regulators do not prescribe a universal 1% or 2% stop-loss rule or a mandatory percentage of portfolio risk per trade. Choose a maximum dollar loss that fits your finances and strategy, then let the stop distance determine the position size.
Use the position-sizing formula
For a long position, the basic calculation is:
Position size = allowed dollar loss ÷ (entry price − stop price)
For a short position, use the absolute difference between the entry and stop:

Round down to a tradable whole share or the venue’s permitted crypto increment. Reserve part of the loss budget for commissions, spread, funding, borrowing costs and slippage. If leverage is involved, calculate the loss on the full position, not just the cash posted as margin.
Worked stock example
Suppose you plan to buy a stock at $50 and decide that a close below $45 would invalidate the trade. The planned risk is $5 per share. With a maximum loss budget of $200, the formula gives 40 shares ($200 ÷ $5). If you need room for fees and a worse-than-expected fill, buy fewer than 40 shares or reduce the allowed loss.
Worked crypto example
Assume a token is trading at $40,000 and your invalidation level is $38,000, a $2,000 distance. A $300 loss budget supports 0.15 token before costs ($300 ÷ $2,000). If the venue allows only a coarser increment, round down. If the position is margined, the same calculation still applies to the notional position; leverage does not reduce the market loss.

Check the portfolio context before placing the order
- Count the proposed loss alongside open positions whose stops could be hit by the same market move.
- Include positions that appear different but share a major driver, such as the same sector, currency, commodity or crypto market.
- Do not treat an unrealized gain in one holding as permission to exceed the loss budget on another unless that is an explicit part of your plan.
- Set a maximum aggregate loss for a day or week. Pause new trades when that limit is reached instead of widening stops to avoid taking the loss.
Put the stop where the trade thesis fails
A stop belongs at the price that disproves your reason for owning the position, not at an arbitrary distance chosen because it is a familiar percentage. A technical level, fundamental assumption, time-based condition or liquidity change can be the invalidation point. The level must still be realistic for the instrument: a stop inside ordinary price noise is likely to trigger even when the thesis remains intact.

Account for normal volatility
Review the instrument’s recent trading range and the time frame of the trade. A short-term trade may need a tighter level than a multi-week position, but the tighter level also leaves less room for routine fluctuations. If the logical stop is too far away for your loss budget, reduce the position rather than moving the stop closer solely to increase size.
Account for liquidity and spreads
In a liquid market, many orders may be available near the trigger. In a thin market, the next available bids or offers can be substantially farther away. A wide spread can also activate a stop depending on the venue’s trigger reference. Read the venue’s rules for whether triggers use last trade, bid, ask, mark price or another reference.
Plan for gaps and halts
A stock can open below its stop after overnight news, or resume trading after a halt at a very different price. A stop order can then execute near the first available price, not at the stop. Crypto venues generally operate continuously, but outages, maintenance, liquidations and abrupt order-book changes can create the same practical problem. A stop is risk control, not insurance against every gap or outage.

| Order type | What happens at the trigger | Price control | Execution and slippage | Best use and main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop (stop-market) | Becomes a market order | No minimum execution price | Highest execution certainty in a functioning market, but fills can be far from the trigger | Useful when exiting matters more than controlling the exact price; vulnerable to gaps and fast markets |
| Stop-limit | Becomes a limit order | Sets the worst acceptable price | Less slippage if filled, but the order may not execute at all | Useful when price control is essential; dangerous when a missed exit would leave the loss open |
| Trailing stop | Stop level follows a favorable move by a fixed dollar or percentage amount | Maintains the chosen trail distance, not a guaranteed fill price | Can capture part of a favorable move, yet can still trigger during normal volatility; fills remain subject to market conditions | Useful for a rule-based exit that adjusts upward for a long position (or downward for a short); it moves only in the favorable direction |
Stop versus stop-limit: the central trade-off
A stop-market order prioritizes getting out, while a stop-limit order prioritizes not selling below (or buying above) your specified limit. In a fast decline, a stop-limit can remain unfilled while the market continues away from you. That is not a technical failure—the order is obeying its limit—but it can defeat the purpose of loss control.
How trailing stops behave
A trailing stop adjusts only when the position moves favorably. For a long position, a new high can lift the stop; a decline does not move it back down. The trail can be a fixed dollar amount or a percentage. A trailing stop still reacts to ordinary volatility, and the eventual execution price is not guaranteed.
Stocks and crypto require different risk assumptions
| Risk factor | Stocks | Crypto |
|---|---|---|
| Trading hours | Usually exchange sessions with defined closes; the exact schedule depends on the listing and market. | Many venues operate around the clock, so a move can occur outside the hours you normally monitor markets. |
| Gap risk | Overnight news, session opens and trading halts can produce prices beyond a stop. | Continuous trading can reduce a formal overnight close, but outages, maintenance, liquidations and abrupt order-book changes can still create jumps. |
| Liquidity | Varies by stock, session and venue; less-liquid issues can have wide spreads and fewer executable orders. | Varies widely by token and venue; thin books can produce substantial slippage. |
| Venue rules | Broker and exchange rules determine trigger references, order availability and handling during halts or abnormal conditions. | Each exchange sets its own trigger reference, maintenance policy, liquidation process and order limits. |
| Leverage | May be available through margin or derivatives, increasing the loss on a given market move. | Common in derivatives and can amplify both gains and losses; forced liquidation may occur before a planned stop. |
| Portfolio correlation | Holdings can be correlated by sector, factor, interest-rate sensitivity or broad market direction. | Many tokens can fall together with major crypto assets or broader risk sentiment, so several apparently separate positions may share one risk. |
The CFTC describes crypto assets as deriving their value completely from supply and demand and as more volatile than traditional fiat currencies. It also warns that volatility amplifies profits and losses in margined futures contracts. Treat a crypto position as higher risk when setting its size; do not use the same nominal position size simply because the quoted price looks similar to a stock.
Build portfolio-level risk limits
Individual stops cannot control concentration by themselves. Add limits that apply to the whole account.

Cap correlated exposure
List positions that are likely to respond to the same event. Add their potential stop losses, then compare the total with your account-level loss budget. If several positions would lose together, reduce one or more sizes even when each position passes its individual test.
Set a daily and weekly loss ceiling
Choose an aggregate dollar limit for realized and, if appropriate, open-position losses. Define what happens when it is reached: stop opening new trades, cancel unfilled entries, and resume only at a scheduled review. These are implementation choices for your plan, not regulator-mandated percentages.
Limit leverage and liquidation risk
With margin or derivatives, calculate the liquidation threshold as well as the planned stop. If liquidation could occur first, the stop is not your effective risk control. Reduce the notional position, add collateral only if it fits your plan, or avoid leverage. Never widen a stop to postpone a margin call.
Separate emergency exits from normal stops
An emergency rule can cover a venue outage, loss of custody access, a broken market-data feed or a fundamental event that invalidates every related position. Document who can act, which alternate venue or method is available, and how the resulting loss is recorded against your portfolio limit.
Place and verify a stop: a practical workflow
- Write the trade thesis and invalidation condition. State why you are entering, the exact price or condition that disproves it, and the time horizon.
- Choose the maximum dollar loss. Use an amount you can absorb without changing essential spending or taking additional risk to recover it.
- Calculate the size. Divide the loss budget by the entry-to-stop distance, then round down for contract, share or token increments.
- Select the order type. Decide whether execution certainty or price control is more important. For a stop-limit, specify both the trigger and the limit and decide what you will do if it remains unfilled.
- Check venue mechanics. Confirm trigger reference, regular-session versus extended-session eligibility, time-in-force, minimum size, fees, borrowing or funding charges, and behavior during halts or maintenance.
- Submit and confirm. Verify that the order is working, attached to the correct position, on the correct side, with the intended quantity and trigger. An order shown as “held,” “rejected” or “canceled” is not protecting the position.
- Record the plan. Save the entry, stop, size, dollar budget, order type and portfolio exposure. This prevents an emotional change from becoming the default.
- Recheck after material changes. Review the stop after a split, symbol change, transfer, venue migration, contract rollover, major liquidity change or broker rule update.
What to do when a stop triggers
Do not automatically re-enter because the market immediately rebounds. First determine whether the original thesis was invalidated, whether the trigger was caused by ordinary noise, or whether a data, spread or venue issue was involved. Record the actual execution, including slippage and fees, and compare it with the loss budget.
If the order did not fill, treat the position as still open. A canceled or expired stop, an unfilled stop-limit, or a venue outage requires a new decision based on the current price—not an assumption that the old protection remains.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Choosing a stop first and sizing afterward: Calculate size from the loss budget and logical stop distance; do not force the stop into a convenient percentage.
- Using the same size in stocks and crypto: Recalculate for each instrument’s volatility, liquidity and correlation.
- Confusing a trigger with a fill: Expect slippage on stop-market orders and possible non-execution on stop-limit orders.
- Ignoring fees, spreads and funding: Reserve part of the loss budget for trading and carrying costs.
- Widening a stop after entry: If the thesis changes, exit or reduce the position; do not silently increase the planned loss.
- Relying on a trailing stop in a noisy market: Set the trail only after checking that ordinary fluctuations will not routinely trigger it.
- Leaving correlated positions uncounted: Apply the daily, weekly and aggregate limits to the combined exposure.
- Failing to check policy changes: FINRA Regulatory Notice 21-12 says firms should provide information about volatile market conditions when customers select a stop order type and stop price. Re-read the current venue disclosure whenever market conditions or the venue changes.
A compact decision checklist
- What exact event invalidates the thesis?
- What dollar loss is acceptable on this position and across the account?
- What is the entry-to-stop distance after considering normal volatility?
- What size does the formula permit after rounding down and reserving costs?
- Could a gap, thin order book, halt, outage or liquidation bypass the planned price?
- Does the selected order type favor execution certainty or price control, and is that trade-off acceptable?
- How much exposure is correlated with this position?
- What is the action when the daily or weekly loss limit is reached?
Bottom line
Effective stop-loss management is a sizing and process discipline, not a universal percentage. Define the loss budget, place the stop at thesis invalidation, size the position from the stop distance, choose the order type with its fill trade-off understood, and enforce limits across correlated holdings. Crypto’s higher volatility, continuous venues and frequent leverage make those controls especially important; stocks still require protection against gaps, halts and slippage.
