How to Set Stop-Loss and Take-Profit Orders on Bitcoin Futures

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Set the exit levels before you enter the trade. For a long Bitcoin-futures position, place the protective stop below entry and the profit target above it; for a short, place the stop above entry and the target below. Then choose whether each exit becomes a market or limit order when triggered, select the trigger reference (mark, last, or index price), use reduce-only or close-position controls where available, and verify the orders after the entry fills.

A stop-market normally gives the best chance of getting out, but its fill can be materially different from the trigger in a fast or thin market. A stop-limit gives more price control but can remain unfilled. Take-profit orders have the same market-versus-limit trade-off. The exact labels, price-protection rules, fees, contract specifications and regional availability depend on the futures venue.

What a stop-loss and take-profit do

A stop-loss is an instruction to close a position when price reaches a level that invalidates your trade idea. A take-profit closes some or all of the position when price reaches your planned objective. They are closing orders, not entries: their side and trigger direction must be opposite the order that opened the position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Position Protective stop Profit target Exit order side
Long (you bought futures) Below the entry price Above the entry price Sell to close
Short (you sold futures) Above the entry price Below the entry price Buy to close

These orders do not remove leverage, funding costs, trading fees or liquidation risk. A stop placed too close to liquidation can lose the race: Binance Futures warns that liquidation may occur before a nearby stop-loss and cause the stop order to expire. Keep a margin buffer and check the estimated liquidation price before submitting the trade.

Plan the trade before submitting the entry

Define the invalidation level

Choose the market level at which your original reason for entering is no longer valid. Use a structural level—such as a swing low for a long or swing high for a short—rather than selecting a distance only because it produces a preferred dollar loss. The stop must also be far enough from normal market noise and the venue’s trigger and price-protection rules to have a reasonable chance of activating.

Calculate quantity from the stop distance

Decide the maximum loss you can accept, then calculate position size from the distance to the stop. For a linear contract, a simplified planning formula is:

position size = maximum planned loss ÷ (absolute entry-to-stop distance × contract value per price unit)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subtract estimated entry and exit fees, funding and likely slippage from the amount you are willing to lose. Inverse and coin-margined contracts use different payout formulas, so use the venue’s contract specification rather than treating the simplified equation as an execution calculation. An example with round numbers is only an illustration: if a trader accepts a planned price loss of $500 and the contract exposure would lose $100 for every $1 move at the chosen size, the size would be five such price units. The actual loss can be larger when a stop-market order slips.

Set the target in the same plan

Place the target where the trade thesis expects a favorable move, not where a platform’s default setting happens to appear. A target that is never realistically reached can leave you exposed to a reversal; one that is too close may not compensate for fees and slippage. There is no universal Bitcoin-futures stop distance, win rate or risk-reward figure supported by the cited exchange documentation, so treat any percentage rule as a personal testable policy rather than a fact.

Step-by-step: place a Bitcoin-futures bracket

  1. Select the correct contract and margin mode. Confirm the Bitcoin perpetual or dated contract, quote currency, settlement type, leverage and margin mode. Contract size, tick size, minimum quantity and liquidation calculations differ by venue.
  2. Choose long or short. Recheck the direction before entering. A long needs a sell stop and sell target; a short needs a buy stop and buy target.
  3. Enter the position. Submit a market order for immediate execution or a limit order at your chosen entry. If the platform supports attached exits, open the bracket or TP/SL controls before submitting the primary order.
  4. Enter the stop trigger. For a long, the trigger is below entry; for a short, it is above. Select the trigger reference—mark, last traded or index price—deliberately rather than accepting an unexplained default.
  5. Choose the stop’s execution type. Select stop-market when execution priority matters more than the exact fill. Select stop-limit only when you accept the possibility of no fill if the market moves through your limit.
  6. Enter the take-profit trigger. For a long, place it above entry; for a short, below. Choose take-profit market or take-profit limit using the same execution-versus-price-control trade-off.
  7. Restrict the exits to closing the position. Turn on reduce-only or close-position when the venue provides it. This prevents an exit from accidentally opening a reverse position after the original trade has been reduced or closed.
  8. Set the quantity correctly. With a bracket, use the quantity that actually fills if the platform offers that option. Otherwise, calculate the filled amount and adjust the exits after the entry. Check whether the control means “entire position” or only a specified number of contracts.
  9. Review the confirmation panel. Verify contract, direction, quantity, trigger signal, trigger prices, market/limit behavior after activation, reduce-only or close-position status, estimated liquidation price and applicable fees.
  10. Submit and verify. After the entry fills, open the positions and open-orders panels. Confirm that both exits are active, attached to the intended position and linked as an OCO pair if the platform promises that behavior.
  11. Manage any alternate exit. If you close manually or another order closes the position, cancel an independent stop or target that remains. Otherwise it can later execute and create an unintended position.

Stop-market versus stop-limit

Stop-market

A stop-market waits until its trigger condition is met, then submits a market order. It prioritizes execution, not the trigger price. Kraken’s derivatives documentation cautions that volatile or thin markets can fill materially above or below the stop. Gaps, order-book depth, latency and matching-engine conditions determine the fill.

Use it when being out of the position is more important than controlling the exact exit price. It is not a guarantee against losses beyond the planned stop, and it cannot guarantee execution before liquidation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop-limit

A stop-limit first activates at the stop trigger and then places a limit order at your specified limit price. It controls the worst price at which the order may trade, but the market can move beyond that limit before a counterparty is available. The position can remain open, and losses can continue, until you cancel or replace the order.

Set the limit offset only after understanding the contract’s tick size, price bands and liquidity. A very narrow offset behaves like a failed stop in a fast move; a wider offset increases the chance of execution but reduces price protection.

Take-profit market and take-profit limit

A take-profit market closes when its favorable trigger is reached and then executes at the available market price. A take-profit limit activates a limit order, which can miss if price touches the trigger and reverses before trading at the limit. The same distinction applies whether the position is long or short.

Choosing mark, last or index price

The trigger reference determines which price stream can activate the order. The same numerical trigger can fire at different times—or not yet—depending on the selected reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Reference What it represents Typical implication
Mark price A venue-calculated fair price used commonly for liquidation and unrealized profit-and-loss calculations. Can reduce sensitivity to an isolated trade, but may differ sharply from the latest trade during extreme moves.
Last traded price The price of the most recent matched trade on that venue. Responds directly to the exchange’s tape, including brief spikes that may not move the mark price equally.
Index price An external reference constructed by the venue from designated markets. Can be less affected by one venue’s order book, but may not match the executable price on your contract.

Binance warns that mark and last prices can diverge sharply in extreme conditions and that mark-price precision affects activation. Kraken derivatives TP/SL controls document mark, index and last as selectable signals. There is no universally superior choice: select the reference that matches the risk you are trying to control, then account for the possibility that the trigger stream and the tradable order book will differ.

Brackets, OCO orders and partial fills

A bracket attaches a stop and a target to the primary entry. In an OCO (“one cancels the other”) arrangement, triggering one exit automatically cancels the other. Kraken describes its derivatives bracket as OCO: “When one is triggered it’ll automatically cancel the other order.” This prevents a target that is no longer needed from closing a new or remaining position after the stop has fired.

Partial fills require special attention. Kraken states that its bracket can size the exits to the quantity actually filled by the primary order. If your venue does not do this, an entry that fills in pieces may leave exits sized too large, too small or inactive. Check the open-order quantity after each fill and amend the bracket if necessary.

An attached bracket is not the same as two unrelated conditional orders. Confirm the order-status display shows the cancellation relationship, and learn whether editing one leg cancels and recreates the other. Platform behavior can change with contract type, account mode and interface version.

Why a stop can fill at a different price

Market execution and slippage

The trigger is an activation condition, not a guaranteed trade price. Once a stop-market becomes a market order, it consumes available bids for a long close or asks for a short close. If the book is thin or price is moving quickly, the average fill can be materially worse than the trigger.

Trigger-price differences

A stop set to mark price may activate while the last traded price is elsewhere, or the reverse. Index construction and update timing can also differ from the contract’s order book. Compare the trigger stream shown in the order history with the chart you were watching.

Price protection

Some venues apply price-protection rules that block or delay a conditional order when mark and last prices differ beyond a specified threshold. Binance says price protection can prevent a stop or target from triggering when the divergence exceeds its threshold. An exit can therefore remain open even though one displayed price appears to have crossed the level. Read the current contract documentation for the exact threshold and eligibility rules.

Liquidation first

If forced liquidation occurs before the stop activates or fills, the stop may expire or become irrelevant because the position is already closed by the risk engine. Keep the stop away from the estimated liquidation price, maintain adequate margin and avoid assuming that a stop is a substitute for margin management.

Binance and Kraken implementation notes

Binance Futures

Binance Futures documents mark-price, last-price and index-price trigger choices and warns that the mark and last can diverge during extreme moves. Its FAQ, updated January 2, 2026, states: “It is not advised to set the stop-loss trigger price close to the estimated liquidation price, liquidation may happen before the stop-loss order and cause the stop-loss order to expire.” Check the current interface for the exact price-protection setting, reduce-only or close-position label, activation rules and contract-specific limits before submitting.

Kraken derivatives

Kraken’s derivatives documentation describes stop-loss, stop-loss-limit, take-profit, take-profit-limit and trailing-stop variants. Its bracket feature can attach one or both exits to the primary order and can size exits to the amount that fills. The bracket is OCO, so one triggered leg cancels the other. Kraken also warns in its general stop-loss guidance that an independent stop may need manual cancellation after an alternate exit. Documentation cited here was updated August 9, 2025; recheck current regional eligibility, fees and interface labels.

Pre-submit safety checklist

  • Contract, settlement type, margin currency and quantity are correct.
  • Long and short direction match the intended trade.
  • Stop and target are on the closing side: below/above for a long, above/below for a short.
  • Trigger reference is explicitly selected and understood.
  • Stop-market or stop-limit behavior after activation is understood.
  • Take-profit market or limit behavior is understood.
  • Reduce-only or close-position is enabled where appropriate.
  • Estimated liquidation price is comfortably beyond the stop.
  • Fees, funding, tick size, minimum quantity and price bands have been checked.
  • Price-protection rules will not silently block the intended trigger.
  • Bracket/OCO status and partial-fill handling are known.
  • An alternate manual close includes a plan to cancel leftover conditional orders.

Troubleshooting common failures

The stop did not trigger

Check whether the selected reference actually crossed the trigger, whether price protection blocked activation, whether the order was rejected for tick-size or quantity reasons, and whether liquidation or another order had already closed the position. Review the exchange’s order history rather than relying only on a chart.

The target triggered but the stop remains

This usually indicates separate, independent conditional orders rather than a functioning OCO bracket, or a partial-fill remainder. Confirm the position quantity, cancel the unused stop and target, and recreate a correctly sized reduce-only order if any position remains.

The stop-limit order is still open

The trigger activated, but the resulting limit price did not meet available liquidity. Decide whether to cancel and use a market-based exit, move the limit, reduce the position manually or accept the remaining exposure. Do not assume that activation means execution.

The exit would open a reverse position

The closing quantity may exceed the remaining position, or reduce-only/close-position was not enabled. Cancel the order, verify the net position and submit a correctly sized closing order. Account modes that support hedged long and short positions may require selecting the specific position side.

The fill is much worse than the stop

Review whether the order was stop-market, the spread and depth at activation, the trigger reference, any gap or outage and the venue’s execution report. A stop-market cannot guarantee the stop price. If exact price control is essential, a stop-limit may help but introduces non-execution risk.

How to compare futures venues before choosing one

Feature to compare Questions to answer
Trigger references Are mark, last and index available for both stops and targets? Which is the default?
Activation behavior Does a stop-market become a market order? Does a stop-limit place a limit after activation?
Position controls Are reduce-only and close-position supported in the selected account mode?
Brackets and OCO Are both exits attached before entry, and does one automatically cancel the other?
Partial fills Are exit quantities resized automatically to the filled amount?
Price protection Can mark/last divergence prevent a trigger, and where is the rule displayed?
Risk information How are liquidation price, margin, maintenance requirements and fees displayed?
Eligibility and cost Is the contract available in your region, and what trading, funding and conditional-order fees apply?

Use the venue’s current contract and order-type documentation for each answer. These mechanics can change, and a feature available on one futures contract or account mode may not be available on another.

A practical operating routine

  1. Write the entry, invalidation level, target, trigger reference and maximum planned loss before opening the order ticket.
  2. Reduce quantity if the stop distance, fees, funding or liquidation buffer makes the trade too large.
  3. Attach both exits when the platform’s bracket supports the required quantity and OCO behavior.
  4. After every fill, verify the actual position size and the active conditional orders.
  5. When adjusting a stop or target, check that the new order remains reduce-only and attached to the correct position.
  6. After any manual or competing exit, cancel independent orders and confirm the position is flat.
  7. Save the execution and order-history details when a trigger behaves unexpectedly; they show the reference price, activation time, rejection reason and fills needed to diagnose it.
