How to Set Stop-Loss and Price Alerts for a Stock Position

By TheFinanceBase Team 13 min read

A stop-loss is a trading order that can sell (or buy) when a specified stop price is reached. A price alert is only a notification that asks you to review the position. They are not interchangeable: a stop order can trigger a trade without further action, while an alert cannot sell shares. Exact order types, trigger rules, alert options and screen labels depend on your brokerage firm.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that a stop order becomes a market order after its stop price is reached, so the stop price is not a guaranteed execution price. Read your broker’s order disclosures before submitting either an order or an alert.

Stop-loss and price alert: what each one does

Stop-loss (stop) order

A stop order is an instruction sent to your brokerage firm. For a long stock position, you normally enter a sell stop below the current market price. If the broker’s trigger condition is met, the order becomes a market order and is sent for execution. The eventual fill can be higher or lower than the stop price, especially during a fast move or a gap.

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” Its bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, also explains the conversion from stop order to market order. See Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders – Investor Bulletin.

Price alert

A price alert is a notification setting. It may send an email, push notification, text message or an in-app notice when the stock reaches a condition or price offered by the firm. It does not submit an order and does not guarantee that you will see or act on the message in time. Alert availability varies by investment firm; the SEC describes account-alert features as firm-specific in its online-account security guidance.

How to choose between them

  • Use a stop instruction only when you understand that it can trigger a sale without another confirmation and that the fill price is not guaranteed.
  • Use an alert when you want a prompt to reassess the position, read news, or decide manually whether to place an order.
  • You can use both, but an alert does not supervise, cancel or improve a stop order.

How a stop order is triggered

Your broker must apply a trigger standard to decide whether the stop price has been reached. Firms may use last-sale prices, quotations, or other rules described in their order-handling disclosures. Two brokers can therefore trigger similar orders at different moments. Check the firm’s current policy and the security’s trading venue before relying on a trigger.

Short-term intraday fluctuations can activate a stop even when the stock later recovers. The SEC warns that an execution after a brief price move can be substantially worse than the closing price. A stop also may trigger when the market opens below your stop after an overnight gap; the order then seeks the available market price rather than waiting for your specified number.

Read the SEC’s broader explanation of order mechanics in Understanding Order Types – Investor Bulletin.

Stop order versus stop-limit order

A stop-limit order adds a limit price. When the stop is reached, the order becomes a limit order rather than a market order. It can restrict the lowest acceptable sale price (or highest acceptable purchase price), but it can also remain unfilled if the market moves past that limit.

Feature Stop order Stop-limit order
What happens at the trigger Becomes a market order Becomes a limit order
Execution-price control No guaranteed price; the fill is at available market prices Fill is limited to the limit price or better
Main risk Execution can be materially different from the stop price in a fast market May not execute if the market moves away from the limit
Trigger standard Depends on the broker’s last-sale or quotation policy Depends on the broker’s last-sale or quotation policy
Duration choices Firm-specific; day and good-til-canceled (GTC) instructions may be offered Firm-specific; GTC limits and other duration rules vary

These distinctions are summarized in the SEC bulletins cited above. A stop-limit is not a guaranteed-sale order: a price restriction that protects against an unexpectedly low fill can leave you holding the shares during a continuing decline.

Before entering either feature

Confirm the position and order direction

  • For a long position, a protective sell stop is the relevant direction and is entered below the current market price.
  • A buy stop is entered above the current market price. It can be used for a planned purchase or to limit risk on a short position, but the appropriate use depends on your strategy and account permissions.
  • Confirm the ticker, exchange-listed security, share quantity and whether the account actually holds the shares.

Decide what you are trying to accomplish

Write down whether the goal is to seek an automatic exit, receive a reminder to investigate, or both. Do not treat a notification threshold as an execution threshold. The sources do not establish a universally suitable dollar amount or percentage for a stop; the level must reflect your own risk decision, the position and the broker’s rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check firm-specific support

Order availability, trigger definitions, trading-session coverage, fractional-share treatment, minimum quantities, duration choices and cancellation rules vary by firm. The SEC’s Online Investing guidance recommends understanding the services and limitations of your account. Read the order preview, fee schedule and customer agreement for the exact security.

How to set a stop-loss order without assuming a universal app

The labels and sequence below describe the common logic of a stock order ticket, not a guaranteed interface. If your broker uses different names, follow its help page and disclosures.

  1. Open the stock order ticket. Start from the account’s trade or order-entry area and select the position’s ticker.
  2. Choose the supported stop instruction. Select a sell stop for a long position, or the direction appropriate to your account. If the ticket offers “stop-limit,” do not select it accidentally; its execution behavior is different.
  3. Enter the share quantity. Check whether the quantity is whole shares or whether the firm permits the order type for fractional shares.
  4. Enter the stop price. This is the trigger, not a promised sale price. Confirm whether the broker describes its trigger as last sale, quote, bid/ask or another standard.
  5. Select the duration. Choose the available instruction, such as day or GTC, and read any maximum GTC period or expiration rule. A GTC order is not necessarily permanent.
  6. Review trading-session and conditional rules. Verify whether the order can trigger during extended hours, whether the security is eligible, and how the firm handles corporate actions or market halts.
  7. Preview and submit. Recheck ticker, side, quantity, stop price, order type and duration. Submit only after the preview states the intended instruction.
  8. Verify the status. Look in open orders to confirm it is accepted and working. A rejected, canceled or expired order is not protecting the position.
  9. Monitor and update deliberately. If your investment decision changes, cancel or replace the order using the broker’s documented process. Do not assume that selling shares manually automatically cancels a separate stop.

Understanding the stop order’s life cycle

Before submission, an order is normally in an entry or preview stage. After submission, the broker may show it as received, accepted, working, rejected, canceled or expired. Only a working order that the firm accepts under its stated conditions can serve as the intended instruction. Keep the confirmation number and timestamp so you can distinguish an active order from one that failed at entry.

When the trigger condition is met, the stop order changes form: a sell stop becomes a market sell order, while a stop-limit becomes a limit sell order. The original stop price does not become a guaranteed fill. Review the resulting execution or open-order status after a trigger, particularly if the security is volatile or trading has been halted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Duration is part of the order, not an afterthought. A day order generally ends according to the firm’s day-order rules if it has not triggered. GTC may last longer but can have a firm-defined maximum period, expiration date or security-specific restriction. Recheck long-standing orders after a corporate action, account change or broker-system notice rather than assuming they remain unchanged forever.

How to set a stock-price alert

Because alert features differ by investment firm, no single click path can be verified without the broker’s name. The general workflow is:

  1. Open the broker’s price-alert or notification settings. This may be attached to a quote page, watchlist, position page or account settings.
  2. Select the stock. Confirm the ticker and, where shown, the listing or exchange.
  3. Choose the condition offered. Examples include crossing a target price or moving above or below a threshold. Use only conditions the firm explicitly supports.
  4. Enter the target value. Check whether the firm evaluates the alert using last trade, bid, ask, delayed data or another quotation source.
  5. Choose delivery channels. Enable the available push, email, text or in-app method, and verify that the contact details are current.
  6. Save and verify activation. Confirm the alert appears in an active-alert list. Review whether it is one-time, recurring or automatically expires.
  7. Test your response plan. Decide in advance what information you will review and what order, if any, you might place. Receiving an alert does not place that order.

Alerts can be delayed, suppressed by connectivity or notification settings, or unavailable for a particular security. Treat them as reminders rather than a real-time execution system.

Designing a response plan for an alert

An alert is most useful when its next step is clear. Decide whether you will review the company’s news, confirm the quote, inspect the position size, or open an order ticket. Set out which facts would justify action and which would merely prompt observation. This prevents an alert from becoming an automatic decision by emotion, while preserving the manual control that distinguishes it from a stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the device and account settings that deliver the notice. A valid email address, enabled push permission and current phone number matter, but none guarantees immediate delivery. If you rely on text or email, consider whether the message can be delayed, filtered or missed. Keep a second way to view the active alert and the account’s current quote.

Do not create multiple alerts with contradictory assumptions without labeling them. Record the stock, condition, target, delivery channel and whether each alert repeats. When the position changes, review both the alert list and working-order list; changing or closing a position does not necessarily remove an unrelated notification.

Illustrative examples

Sell stop on a long position

Suppose an investor owns shares and enters a sell stop with a trigger below the current quote. If the broker’s trigger condition is met, the order changes to a market order. If the next available prices are below the trigger because the stock moved quickly, the fill can be lower. The example demonstrates the mechanism; it does not establish a suitable stop level.

Stop-limit on the same position

The investor could instead enter a stop and a lower limit price. After triggering, the order will sell only at the limit price or better. If the market falls below that limit, no sale may occur, leaving the position exposed. A stop-limit therefore trades execution certainty for price control.

Alert without an order

An investor can create an alert at a chosen price and then review the company, news and account before deciding. Nothing is sold when the alert fires. The investor must still place and confirm a separate order if an exit is desired.

Overnight gap

If a long position has a sell stop below the prior session’s price and the next session opens below that trigger, the stop can activate under the broker’s rules and seek the available market price. The opening fill may therefore be materially below the selected stop. A price alert set at the same number would only notify the investor, subject to the firm’s alert and quote rules.

Common failure modes and what to check

The order triggered at a different price

Check whether the broker used last-sale or quotation data and whether the stock moved rapidly or opened with a gap. A stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed execution price.

The stop-limit did not fill

Review the limit price, current market and order status. If available prices are outside the limit, the order can remain open or expire. Decide whether to cancel and replace it only after reassessing the risk; changing it does not guarantee a fill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The order never triggered

Confirm that the order was accepted and working, that the ticker and side were correct, and that the firm’s trigger policy and trading-session coverage matched your expectation. Check for expiration, cancellation, halts or corporate-action adjustments.

An alert did not arrive

Check that the alert is active, the target condition is supported, contact details are verified, and push, email or text notifications are enabled. Review whether the quote data is delayed and whether the alert is one-time or already consumed. A missing message is another reason not to treat an alert as an automatic exit.

The position was sold manually but the stop remains

Open the broker’s working-order list after any manual trade. Cancel an unnecessary order according to the firm’s process, or it could later act on a remaining position if shares are repurchased.

The quantity or security was ineligible

Some firms apply different rules to fractional shares, thinly traded securities, foreign listings or other products. If the ticket rejects the order, read the stated reason and the account agreement rather than substituting a different order type without understanding its behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The order appears active on one screen but not another

Refresh the open-order and position views, save the confirmation and contact the broker through its official channel if the status conflicts. Do not submit duplicate orders simply because a page is slow to update; an accepted duplicate could create an unintended position change.

Questions to answer in your broker’s disclosures

  • Does the firm offer sell stops, buy stops, stop-limits and trailing stops for this security and account type?
  • Does it trigger on last-sale prices, quotes, bid/ask data or another measure?
  • Can orders trigger in extended hours, and what happens during halts or opening gaps?
  • What day and GTC durations are available, and when do GTC orders expire?
  • Are fractional shares, options, foreign listings or thinly traded securities treated differently?
  • Which price-alert conditions and delivery methods are available, and are alerts one-time or recurring?
  • How can you confirm acceptance, cancel an order, replace it and document the resulting status?
  • Does the firm disclose any applicable transaction charges, service fees or data limitations for the order or alert?
  • How are orders adjusted, canceled or reviewed after splits, dividends, mergers or other corporate actions?

The SEC’s order-type guidance emphasizes that firms can differ in the instructions they offer and in their policies. Read the current terms for your account rather than relying on another broker’s terminology.

Safety and account controls

Use a unique password, multi-factor authentication and current contact information for the brokerage account. Review account and trade notifications so that an unexpected order or profile change is visible quickly. The SEC’s Protecting Your Online Investment Accounts from Fraud bulletin notes that alert availability varies by firm; enable the protections your firm actually provides.

Keep a record of the order type, trigger or limit, quantity, duration and confirmation number. If the account shows a rejection or an unfamiliar execution, contact the broker promptly using its official support channel.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need an automatic instruction? Examine a stop or stop-limit, understanding the execution or non-execution risk.
  • Need a reminder to investigate? Set a price alert and plan to review the position yourself.
  • Unsure of the level? Do not copy a universal percentage. Determine the level from your own risk decision and verify that the order behaves as expected at your firm.
  • Unsure of the trigger? Read the broker’s last-sale or quotation policy before submitting.
  • Unsure whether protection is active? Check the working-order or active-alert screen and retain the confirmation.
  • Position changed? Reconcile the share quantity, open orders and active alerts so an old instruction does not conflict with the current position.
  • Market moving quickly? Remember that a stop may fill away from its trigger and a stop-limit may not fill at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a stop-loss guarantee that I will sell at my stop price?

No. Reaching the stop price generally converts a stop order into a market order. The execution price can differ, particularly during rapid moves or an overnight gap.

What is the difference between a stop order and a stop-limit order?

A stop order becomes a market order after triggering, prioritizing execution but not guaranteeing a price. A stop-limit becomes a limit order, constraining the fill price but allowing the order to remain unfilled.

Can a price alert sell my shares automatically?

No. An alert is a notification. You must review the position and submit a separate order if you decide to sell.

Where should a sell stop be placed for a long position?

A sell stop is entered below the current market price. The appropriate level depends on your own risk decision; there is no universal percentage or dollar amount established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my stop trigger during a brief price dip?

Short-term intraday fluctuations can meet the broker’s trigger condition even if the stock later recovers. Check whether the firm uses last-sale prices or quotations.

Why did my stop-limit order not execute?

After triggering, it will sell only at the limit price or better. If available prices move beyond that limit, the order may stay open or expire.

Are good-til-canceled orders permanent?

Not necessarily. GTC duration and maximum periods vary by brokerage, so read the firm’s expiration rules and check the order status.

What should I do after selling a position manually?

Review the working-order list and cancel any unnecessary stop according to the broker’s process. A separate stop may remain active even after a manual sale.

The Bottom Line

A stop order is an automatic trade instruction with no guaranteed execution price; a stop-limit adds price control but may not execute. A price alert only asks you to review the position. Confirm your broker’s trigger standard, order duration, security eligibility, alert delivery and active status before relying on either feature.
