Use a wallet or smart account that is separate from your main holdings, fund it with only the amount the agent needs, and enforce limits at more than one level. Set approved actions, tokens, contracts or recipients, a maximum per transaction, a daily or rolling-period cap, approval rules, an expiry date and an owner-controlled kill switch. A recurring allowance—such as 100 USDC becoming available every day—is a programmable budget reset, not proof that the agent can pull fresh money from your bank, exchange or treasury. Keep refill authority with a human or separately controlled service.
What a spending limit actually controls
An AI agent can submit transactions quickly, so a single balance cap is not enough. A useful policy limits several independent dimensions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Actions: define whether the agent may transfer, swap, trade, call a contract, approve a token, or only read data.
- Assets: specify approved tokens, such as USDC, and reject every unlisted token.
- Destinations: restrict recipient addresses, contracts, or an address book. A destination allowlist is especially important because blockchain transfers are generally irreversible.
- Amount: set a maximum value for each transaction.
- Period: set a daily, monthly, or rolling-window maximum. “Daily” must have a defined reset time and timezone; a rolling 24-hour window behaves differently from a calendar-day cap.
- Approval: require a second confirmation when a request exceeds a threshold or involves a new recipient, contract approval, large swap, or DeFi interaction.
- Expiry: make the authorization end automatically instead of remaining valid indefinitely.
- Revocation: provide an owner-controlled pause, key rotation, or policy deletion that does not depend on the agent cooperating.
These controls answer different failure modes. A low daily cap limits total loss, while an approved-recipient list prevents a transaction from going to an unexpected address. A short expiry limits the time available for a compromised agent to act. Use all of them where the wallet or smart-account implementation supports them.

Hosted agent wallet
A hosted design gives the agent a separate account and exposes only constrained operations through an app or API. Binance describes its Agentic Wallet as a separate, keyless wallet with an isolated balance; its documentation says the agent is constrained at the API level and that operations are logged and auditable. The FAQ says transfers are restricted to address-book destinations and that the isolated wallet cannot access the main wallet balance.

Binance’s current documentation lists four supported networks: BNB Smart Chain (chain ID 56), Ethereum (chain ID 1), Base (chain ID 8453), and Solana (network identifier CT_501). Availability, supported assets and controls can vary by account and jurisdiction, so confirm those details in the product interface before funding an account. The FAQ was published on April 24, 2026, and updated August 26, 2026.
Smart-account policy
A smart account can enforce rules in contract logic rather than relying only on an application server. ERC-8196 models an authenticated agent policy with an owner address, agent address, allowed actions, allowed and blocked contracts, a maximum value per transaction, and an optional maximum value per day. The owner address should remain under your control; the agent address should not be able to rewrite the policy that limits it.
Managed per-agent infrastructure
AgentWallet documents a hierarchy in which funds move from an account to a principal and then to an agent, with per-transaction, daily and monthly caps. Its FAQ answers “Can an agent top itself up?” with “No. Funds are allocated down from the account and principal. The agent can request approval for a spend but cannot move money into its own wallet.” This arrangement separates operating authority from treasury authority.

Fund only the operating balance
After creating the isolated account, transfer only the amount required for the task or budget period. Do not place your emergency savings, payroll funds, long-term holdings, or unrestricted treasury in the same wallet. A limit is a software or contract rule; a deliberately small balance is a second line of defense if a rule is misconfigured or a signing credential is compromised.

Record the initial balance, the approved assets, the owner address and the policy version. Use a separate funding procedure for replenishment so that an agent request is not itself authorization to move treasury funds. If an agent needs more money, it should produce a request containing the purpose, destination, amount, current allowance and transaction simulation; a human or separately controlled allocator then approves or rejects it.
Set the policy in this order
1. Choose permitted actions
Begin with the narrowest operation that solves the task. For example, a payment agent may need to transfer USDC to approved vendors but not deploy contracts, call arbitrary protocols, or approve unlimited token spending. A trading agent may need swaps on one named exchange contract but not withdrawals to arbitrary addresses. If the implementation cannot distinguish actions, treat that limitation as a reason to use a smaller balance and stronger manual approval.
2. Approve tokens and destinations
Allow only the tokens the agent is expected to use and only the recipient addresses or contracts that have been reviewed. Polygon’s control model, for example, includes approved tokens, recipients, a spend amount and an expiry, with revocation available to the owner. Review the exact contract address on the correct chain; a familiar name is not sufficient.
3. Set the per-transaction maximum
Choose the largest single payment the agent can make without human review. Make it low enough that one prompt-injection event, bug, or mistaken quote is survivable. ERC-8196 names this field maxValuePerTx. A transaction above the threshold should be rejected or routed to a second-approval workflow, not silently split into multiple transfers.

4. Set a daily or rolling-period maximum
Define whether the cap is a calendar day, a fixed interval from policy creation, or a rolling window. ERC-8196 includes an optional maxValuePerDay. A calendar-day limit can reset at midnight in a specified timezone; a rolling 24-hour limit counts recent activity continuously. Write the reset semantics into your operating procedure and verify them with a small test transaction before relying on the policy.
5. Add an approval threshold
Require a human confirmation for new recipients, contract approvals, large swaps, DeFi interactions, policy changes, and any transaction that exceeds the routine amount. Binance documents auto-rejection or app confirmation for high-risk transactions. OpenPay’s setup instructions require per-call, per-session and daily limits plus allowed hosts, and warn that blockchain transfers are, in principle, irreversible; its service is identified as being in beta. Treat beta tooling as unsuitable for an unattended high-value wallet.
6. Set an expiry and kill switch
Use a short expiry for a temporary task and renew it deliberately. Keep the revocation control with the owner or another trusted administrator. Test the emergency path: pause the agent, revoke its policy, remove a recipient, rotate credentials, and block further funding. A kill switch that requires the compromised agent to sign its own shutdown is not an effective kill switch.
How recurring allowances and “automatic refill” differ
A recurring allowance makes a fresh spending quota available on a schedule. Safe’s official AI-agent treasury quickstart describes an allowance module that supports either a one-time allowance or an allowance that resets after a chosen interval, using “100 USDC every day” as an example. If the wallet has enough USDC, the agent can spend the newly available daily quota subject to the other policy rules.

That reset is not the same as purchasing or transferring new money. It does not establish that funds will be pulled automatically from a bank account, exchange, card, or treasury when the wallet balance reaches zero. The official agent-wallet documentation cited here does not describe a universal native switch that replenishes an empty wallet from an external source.
Use precise language in your design:
- Allowance reset: the policy restores the amount the agent may spend during the next interval.
- Wallet funding: a separate transaction moves tokens into the agent’s wallet.
- Refill authorization: a human or controlled service is allowed to perform that funding transaction.
Only the second and third items put additional tokens in an empty wallet. Keep refill authorization outside the agent. The safest architecture lets the agent request a top-up while an owner, multisignature group, treasury service, or other separately controlled process decides whether to send it.
Practical setup workflow
- Create the isolated account. Use a dedicated hosted agent wallet, smart account, or per-agent account hierarchy. Record the owner address, agent address, supported chain, and recovery method. Do not import your main-wallet signing key into the agent runtime.
- Choose one chain and a small asset set. Start with the chain and token required for the task. Confirm the token contract, decimals, gas asset and destination network before funding.
- Fund the bounded balance. Transfer only the amount needed for the first task or period. Keep treasury funds in an account the agent cannot sign from.
- Configure action, token and destination rules. Add approved operations, tokens, contracts and recipients. Block everything else by default. Where an address book is available, require a human to add entries.
- Set amount and period caps. Enter the per-transaction maximum and daily or rolling-period maximum. Define the reset time, timezone and whether failed or pending transactions count toward the cap.
- Set approvals and expiry. Route high-risk actions to a human confirmation, set a short validity period, and ensure policy changes require the owner rather than the agent.
- Test with a harmless transaction. Send a small approved amount, then deliberately try an unapproved token, recipient, contract and over-limit amount. Confirm each is rejected or held for approval and that the audit log records the decision.
- Enable a recurring allowance if needed. Configure the interval and amount, such as a documented 100 USDC daily allowance in Safe’s example. Verify that the allowance resets as expected without assuming that the wallet balance is replenished.
- Document the refill path. Specify who can add funds, which account sends them, the maximum top-up, required evidence, and the expiry of that authorization. The agent may submit a request, but it must not be able to approve and execute its own top-up.
- Monitor and review. Check balances, allowance consumption, rejected requests, recipient changes and policy edits. Raise a cap only after reviewing the transaction log and only for the minimum time necessary.
Implementation patterns compared
| Pattern | Policy enforcement | Budget or refill behavior | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted agent wallet | Application/API controls, isolated balance and address restrictions | User funds the separate wallet; no universal automatic refill is documented | Consumers wanting a managed setup |
| Smart-account allowance module | On-chain allowance logic | Allowance can reset on a schedule, such as 100 USDC every day; external funding is a separate process | DAOs and developers needing recurring token budgets |
| ERC-8196 policy interface | Smart-contract policy fields for owner, agent, actions, contracts and value caps | Implementer-defined; includes per-transaction and optional daily caps | Teams building interoperable agent wallets |
| Managed per-agent infrastructure | Account/principal allocation, caps and approvals | Funds flow from account and principal; the agent cannot self-top-up | Organizations needing separated treasury and operating authority |
Compare implementations on more than the headline daily limit. Check the isolation boundary, whether enforcement occurs on-chain or at an API, destination controls, period semantics, approval workflow, audit-log detail, supported chains, owner recovery, and the exact revocation procedure. Fees and availability are not stated in the cited documentation, so obtain current terms for your jurisdiction and account type before deployment.

- one approved chain and USDC only;
- five named recipient addresses;
- a 25 USDC maximum per transaction;
- a 100 USDC calendar-day allowance that resets at a documented UTC time;
- human confirmation for a new recipient, token approval, contract call, or amount above 25 USDC;
- a seven-day expiry, renewed by the owner;
- a separate treasury account that may fund the operating wallet only after an approved request.
The 100 USDC figure here mirrors Safe’s published example; the other values are a policy illustration, not a claim about a provider’s default settings. If the wallet contains only 40 USDC, the remaining allowance does not create another 60 USDC. A refill service would still need to transfer that amount, and that transfer should be authorized outside the agent.
When an agent appears to need more money
The allowance reset occurred but the balance is empty
Check whether the implementation tracks an allowance separately from the token balance. If the balance is zero, submit a refill request to the owner or allocator; do not grant the agent a treasury key merely to avoid a manual step.
The transaction is rejected despite available funds
Check each policy dimension: token, chain, recipient, contract, action, per-transaction cap, period cap, expiry and approval status. A valid balance does not override a blocked destination or an exhausted daily allowance.
The daily limit seems to reset early or late
Inspect whether the rule uses a calendar day, a fixed interval, or a rolling 24-hour window, and confirm the configured timezone. Compare the policy’s recorded reset timestamp with the audit log rather than inferring behavior from the wallet balance.
A refill request contains a new recipient
Handle the recipient review separately from the funding request. Verify the address on the correct network, require a second approval, and add it to the allowlist only if the business purpose is documented. Never let a top-up request implicitly authorize a new destination.
The agent or key may be compromised
Pause or revoke the policy first, then stop the funding service, remove recipients, rotate credentials and move remaining funds to a clean owner-controlled account. Preserve logs and transaction hashes for incident review. Because confirmed blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed, speed matters more than investigating inside the agent session.
Security checklist before going live
- The agent wallet is separate from the main wallet and contains only an operating balance.
- The owner or recovery key is not available to the agent process.
- Actions, tokens, contracts and recipients are allowlisted.
- Per-transaction and period caps are both configured.
- Daily versus rolling-window reset behavior is documented and tested.
- New recipients, approvals, large swaps, DeFi calls and policy changes require human confirmation.
- Allowance expiry and owner revocation have been tested.
- Refill authority belongs to a human or separately controlled service.
- Logs show requests, approvals, rejected actions, policy edits and funding transactions.
- The team knows which chain, token contract and gas asset are required for recovery.
What to verify in documentation and terms
Product labels such as “automatic refill,” “daily budget,” or “agent wallet” can describe different mechanisms. Before funding, verify whether the control is enforced by a smart contract, an API, or an operational review; whether the period is calendar-based or rolling; whether failed and pending transactions consume the cap; and whether the provider supports your chain and token. Confirm access status, geography, fees, custody model and recovery options from the current provider terms. None of those commercial details is established by the technical facts above, so do not assume that a feature shown in one account or network is available everywhere.
