The safest boundary is to decide what a chatbot is for before you open it, what you will not disclose, how you will verify its output, and when a human must take over. Treat every assistant or companion bot as a fallible service with its own memory, retention, connected tools and business rules—not as a confidential professional, friend or emergency responder.
The practical framework below covers purpose, disclosure, personalization, time, reliance, verification and escalation. It also shows how current controls in ChatGPT and Gemini work, including important exceptions that privacy labels can hide.

Start with a purpose, not a conversation
Write one sentence describing the job you want the bot to do. Good examples are “brainstorm five names,” “turn these notes into a neutral email,” or “explain the difference between an index fund and a savings account in plain English.” A defined task makes it easier to notice when the exchange drifts into advice, emotional dependence or unnecessary disclosure.
Recommended Free Tools
Set a stop condition at the same time. You might stop when you have three usable ideas, a draft you can edit, or a list of questions for a qualified person. If the bot keeps producing variations without improving the result, end the session rather than treating more messages as progress.

Tasks that usually fit a general-purpose bot
- Brainstorming, outlining and rewriting material you have already reviewed.
- Explaining a general concept, with the expectation that you will check important facts.
- Creating a checklist, practice questions or a neutral summary of documents that contain no sensitive personal data.
- Helping you formulate questions for a doctor, lawyer, accountant, financial adviser, teacher or other qualified professional.
Tasks that need a qualified human or official service
- Diagnosis, treatment decisions, medication changes or urgent health symptoms.
- Legal conclusions, filing decisions, immigration matters or interpretation of a contract that affects your rights.
- Personalized investment, tax, credit, insurance or debt recommendations where an error could cost money or create liability.
- Emergency response, self-harm or violence risk, abuse disclosures, or any situation in which someone may be in immediate danger.
Google’s Gemini Apps guidance says its responses may be inaccurate or offensive and advises users not to rely on them for diagnosis, treatment, medical, legal, financial or other professional help. That is product guidance for Gemini, not a universal legal rule for every service, but it is a useful standard for deciding when to hand a question to a human. Read Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Use a seven-part boundary check
Run this check before sharing information or accepting an answer. You can write the answers in a note, keep them in a password manager, or simply pause for 20 seconds; no special app or fixed number of sessions is required.
| Boundary | Ask yourself | Safer default |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | What specific task am I delegating? | Name the task and a stopping point before you type. |
| Disclosure | Would I be comfortable with this information being handled under the provider’s retention and review practices? | Remove names, account numbers, addresses, exact balances and other identifiers unless they are essential and the service is approved for that use. |
| Personalization | Do I want the bot to remember this context? | Use the least memory and personalization needed for the task. |
| Time and reliance | Is this replacing sleep, work, relationships or independent judgment? | Set a personal stopping cue and switch activities when the cue occurs. |
| Verification | What would happen if this answer were wrong? | Check high-impact facts with an authoritative source and decisions with a qualified person. |
| Escalation | Who will I contact if I become distressed or cannot disengage? | Choose a trusted person or appropriate service before a crisis develops. |
| Audience and age | Does a child or teenager use this account or see this conversation? | Discuss features, disclosure and offline support openly; use stronger supervision for higher-risk topics. |
Disclosure: share the minimum necessary
A chatbot prompt is not automatically confidential because it appears in a private-looking window. Before entering text, review the provider’s current descriptions of history, memory, model-improvement use, human review, connected apps and retention. Settings can differ by account, plan, age, region and workplace.

Redact financial and identity details
For a budgeting question, replace “My account at [bank] has $18,432.17 and my mortgage number is 004…” with a fictional example such as “Assume a household earns $6,000 a month, owes $240,000 at 6.5%, and has $12,000 in emergency savings.” Preserve the relationships that matter to the calculation while removing identifiers.
Do not paste passwords, one-time codes, payment-card numbers, government identifiers, medical record numbers, private messages, precise location data or another person’s confidential information. If a document must be analyzed, delete signatures, barcodes, account IDs and metadata first. A privacy accessory, notebook or local screen setting cannot control what the provider receives or how it retains the text.

Check connected tools and third parties
A chatbot may send part of a prompt to a plug-in, action, browsing destination or other connected service. That recipient can apply a different privacy policy. Read the tool’s disclosure before enabling it, and disconnect integrations you do not need. Google states that connected third-party apps used with Gemini are not monitored or secured by Google; treat that as a reminder to evaluate each recipient separately. See Google’s current explanation of connected apps and data.
Understand what privacy controls actually change
Privacy controls are specific switches, not a blanket promise that a conversation is private. A setting may change model-improvement use while leaving history intact, or hide a chat from your visible history while permitting a limited safety copy.
ChatGPT: review Data controls
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Data controls and review the options shown for your signed-in account, plan and workspace.
- Check the status of Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says switching it off means new conversations are not used to train its models, but saved conversations can remain in chat history.
- Decide whether to use Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation that should not become part of your normal history or memory.
- Review memory, custom instructions and any connected tools separately; changing one control does not necessarily change the others.
OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve its models while they remain temporary. It may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Availability and exact labels depend on sign-in status, plan and workspace, so confirm the live wording in your account before relying on it. OpenAI’s Data controls guidance.
Temporary Chat also has a personalization choice. A non-personalized Temporary Chat does not use memory, custom instructions or plugins. If you start a personalized Temporary Chat, it may use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins. “Temporary” therefore does not mean that every form of context or every third party is excluded. Read the Temporary Chat FAQ.
Gemini Apps: check Activity, Temporary Chat and connected services
- Open the Gemini Apps settings or Privacy Hub for the Google account you are using.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity and the available activity, auto-delete and Temporary Chat choices.
- Read the retention and human-review explanation that applies to the feature and account, rather than assuming a setting covers every Google service.
- Inspect connected apps and permissions; remove an integration that is not necessary for the task.
- After changing a setting, verify whether it affects new conversations only and whether deleting Gemini activity also deletes copies held elsewhere.
Google’s current Privacy Hub says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years. It also says deleting Gemini Apps activity does not delete data held in other Google services. Those are Google’s product-specific descriptions, not a universal chatbot policy, and details can vary by feature and account. Check the live Gemini Apps Privacy Hub before sharing sensitive material.

Keep high-stakes money decisions with accountable people
For personal finance, use a chatbot as a preparation and explanation tool, not as the final decision-maker. It can help organize transactions, generate questions for an adviser or explain a term. It cannot know every fact in your tax return, loan agreement, jurisdiction or risk tolerance, and a plausible answer can still be wrong.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA safer finance workflow
- Anonymize: Replace account names, exact identifiers and unnecessary personal details with invented but realistic figures.
- Ask for assumptions: Request a list of assumptions, missing inputs and the date or jurisdiction that could change the result.
- Request alternatives: Ask for several options and their trade-offs instead of “What should I do?”
- Verify: Check rates, limits, tax treatment and eligibility on the relevant government, lender, insurer or plan administrator website.
- Escalate: Take the verified facts and your questions to a qualified professional when the decision is consequential.
- Document: Keep the source and date of any rule you rely on; do not treat an undated chatbot transcript as evidence.
Examples of safer prompts include: “Explain what an adjustable-rate mortgage is and list questions to ask a lender,” or “Using these fictional numbers, show how a 1% fee changes a 20-year investment projection; identify what the example does not predict.” Avoid prompts that ask a bot to choose a security, guarantee a return, interpret a binding contract or decide whether you can stop prescribed treatment.
Verify answers in proportion to the risk
Not every sentence needs the same checking. A useful rule is to match verification effort to the cost of being wrong.
- Low impact: For brainstorming or wording, inspect the result for tone, omissions and made-up details.
- Moderate impact: For a factual explanation, compare key claims with a primary source such as a government agency, contract, product documentation or academic institution.
- High impact: For health, legal, tax, investment, credit, safety or employment decisions, obtain qualified human advice and ask the professional to review the underlying documents.
Ask the chatbot to separate facts, assumptions and uncertainty, but do not treat its confidence or a citation-looking link as proof. Open the source yourself, check its date and confirm that it applies to your location, account type and situation.
Set time and reliance boundaries without inventing a “safe” limit
No reviewed official source establishes a universally safe number of minutes, messages or sessions. A personal stopping cue is therefore self-management, not a clinical threshold.

Useful stopping cues
- The bot repeats itself, and you are asking the same question in new wording.
- You are postponing sleep, meals, work, study, exercise or contact with people to continue chatting.
- You feel compelled to obtain reassurance, permission or affection from the bot before acting.
- You are disclosing increasingly intimate information because the conversation feels unusually understanding.
- You are angry, panicked or unable to close the app.
When a cue appears, save only the non-sensitive task result, close the session, change activity and contact a person if needed. Do not negotiate with the bot about whether you are “allowed” to stop; the boundary belongs to you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Companion-style use requires an extra layer of caution
Conversational systems can imitate warmth, memory and concern. The Federal Trade Commission said on September 11, 2025 that AI chatbots may use generative AI to “simulate human-like communication and interpersonal relationships with users.” The FTC opened an inquiry into seven companies’ monetization, testing, monitoring, disclosures, age measures and information handling. An inquiry seeks information; it is not a finding that a particular company broke the law or that every user experienced harm. Read the FTC announcement.
Use a companion bot as an optional activity, not your only confidant or source of approval. Keep regular contact with people who can observe your wellbeing, disagree with you and take practical action. Be especially wary of prompts that encourage secrecy, exclusivity, spending money to preserve a relationship, or withdrawal from family, friends and professionals.
Boundaries for children and teenagers
Children and teens may be more inclined to trust a system that sounds human. Parents and caregivers should make the rules concrete rather than relying on a generic age warning.

- Ask what the young person uses the chatbot for—homework, advice, role-play, companionship or something else.
- Review together what information is shared, which memory or activity features are enabled, and what connected apps can receive.
- Agree on topics that require an offline adult, such as threats, sexual exploitation, self-harm, abuse, medical symptoms, money transfers or illegal activity.
- Name at least two trusted adults and practice how to start the conversation when something feels urgent or embarrassing.
- Check in periodically without demanding a transcript; the goal is safety and openness, not surveillance for its own sake.
OpenAI’s December 18, 2025 description of U18 principles for ChatGPT users aged 13–17 mentions stronger guardrails, safer alternatives and encouragement to seek trusted offline support in higher-risk conversations. It describes intended model behavior, not a guarantee that a safeguard will detect every problem. Read OpenAI’s U18 principles.

UNICEF’s Safer Chatbots guide is aimed primarily at providers designing safeguards for young people who seek advice or disclose urgent situations. It is useful background for a family discussion, not a validated personal checklist. Read UNICEF’s Safer Chatbots guidance.
Make an escalation plan before distress peaks
Choose a person and a service before you need them. Write down who you can call, what words you will use and where to go if someone is in immediate danger. For urgent danger, contact local emergency services or an appropriate crisis helpline; do not wait for a chatbot to identify the situation.
ChatGPT’s optional Trusted Contacts feature can notify an invited person under the conditions described by OpenAI. OpenAI says it is available in most countries and territories for adults 18 or older using personal accounts, not shared Business, Enterprise or Edu workspaces, and the invited person must accept. It also states plainly: “Trusted contact is not an emergency service, a crisis response system, or a substitute for mental health care.” Check current eligibility and regional availability before relying on it. Read the Trusted Contacts guidance.

A compact boundary card you can reuse
Before opening any chatbot, answer these six questions:
- What single task am I doing?
- What information can I remove or fictionalize?
- Will memory, personalization or a connected tool be active?
- What is my stopping cue?
- Which claim or decision must I verify elsewhere?
- Who will I contact if this becomes distressing or urgent?
Revisit the card whenever the provider changes its settings, you connect a new tool, your use shifts from information to companionship, or the stakes of the decision increase.
