How to set safe fee limits for Lightning payments and avoid overpaying

By TheFinanceBase Team 13 min read

A Lightning fee limit is a ceiling on the routing fee you authorize for one payment. It is not a quote, a guarantee that the payment will succeed, or a cap on on-chain Bitcoin costs. There is no universally safe percentage or satoshi amount: choose a ceiling from the payment size, urgency, available routes and the most you are willing to spend, then verify how your wallet implements it. The detailed controls below are for LND; other wallets may use different labels or offer no user-set cap.

What a Lightning fee limit actually controls

A Lightning payment can travel directly over a channel to the recipient or through several forwarding nodes. Each forwarding node may charge a routing fee. The sender’s fee limit sets the maximum total of those forwarding fees for that payment.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That limit does not control every cost associated with Lightning. Channel commitment transactions, force-closes and cooperative closes are on-chain activities with separate Bitcoin transaction fees. Changing a payment’s routing cap does not change miner fees or the cost of closing a channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In LND, the payment API calls this amount fee_limit_sat or fee_limit_msat. A value of zero means that only routes advertising zero routing fees qualify. That can make a payment fail when every usable route charges something.

How routing fees are calculated

Forwarding policies normally have two components:

  • Base fee: a fixed amount charged for each forwarded HTLC.
  • Proportional fee: a rate applied to the amount forwarded.

For a single path, the routing cost is the sum of each hop’s base charge plus its proportional charge. The sender does not set those individual policies; each forwarding node advertises its own policy. Your cap applies to the aggregate amount that the payment is allowed to spend across all selected hops.

A multi-hop route can therefore accumulate several base fees plus proportional charges. A multi-part payment (MPP) divides the payment among multiple routes. Splitting can bypass a capacity bottleneck, but every path can add another base fee, so an MPP payment may cost more than a single-path payment even when its proportional rates are attractive. A percentage that looks small on the whole invoice can still be affected by several fixed base charges.

LND selects routes using advertised fees, timelock information and other routing data. Channel balances are private and directional. A route that looks inexpensive and available in the graph can still fail because a channel lacks enough balance in the required direction. Lightning Labs’ Builder’s Guide describes this directly: “Lack of knowledge about node balances is the primary reason that payments fail.”

A cap is a spending decision, not a universal safe rate

Set the limit to the most you are prepared to pay for routing on this particular payment. The right amount depends on:

  • the invoice amount and how significant a fixed base fee would be;
  • whether the payment is urgent or can be retried later;
  • how much route choice you need to overcome private liquidity constraints;
  • whether your wallet may split the payment into several parts; and
  • your willingness to use another payment method if the cap is exceeded.

A very restrictive cap can eliminate every qualifying route. Raising it may admit more routes, but it authorizes greater spending; it does not force the network to find a route or guarantee success. Treat the cap as a maximum budget, never as an expected price.

Do not copy a percentage from someone else’s setup as though it were a Lightning standard. A cap is a personal cost-control setting. Two users paying the same invoice may reasonably choose different limits because one values immediate settlement while the other is willing to wait or retry.

Fixed-satoshi and percentage ceilings

Both approaches are useful, but they protect against different risks. A fixed limit is easy to understand in absolute terms. A percentage limit scales with the payment, yet can authorize a surprisingly large number of sats for a large invoice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice How the maximum is expressed Strength Risk to watch
Fixed limit A maximum number of sats or millisats The worst-case routing spend is obvious before sending The same cap can be too tight for a large payment or disproportionately high for a tiny one
Percentage limit A maximum share of the payment amount Automatically scales as invoice size changes The absolute fee rises with payment size; base fees can still make small payments expensive relative to their value

For illustration, a 5% ceiling on a 1,000-sat payment permits up to 50 sats, while the same percentage on a 100,000-sat payment permits up to 5,000 sats. Those figures demonstrate the scaling behavior, not a recommended policy. If your priority is a hard cash maximum, use a fixed ceiling when your wallet supports it. If you manage payments across widely varying amounts and accept a proportional budget, a percentage may be easier to maintain.

Always translate a percentage into sats before approving a large invoice. Ask, “What is the largest absolute routing bill this setting permits?” If that number is uncomfortable, replace the percentage with a fixed limit or reduce the percentage. Conversely, a fixed limit that works for a small invoice may be so restrictive on a much larger payment that every route is rejected.

Set the ceiling before you send

  1. Identify the wallet’s control. Look for a routing-fee maximum, a fee limit in sats or millisats, a percentage limit, or a fee preview. Some wallets do not expose a user-set cap. Do not assume an LND flag exists in another app.
  2. Decide your budget from the invoice. Write down the maximum routing fee you accept for this payment. Separate that amount from any on-chain costs you may incur later.
  3. Choose one unit. In LND’s current SendPaymentV2 API, provide either fee_limit_sat or fee_limit_msat; the fields are mutually exclusive. Do not send both.
  4. Inspect the wallet’s estimate or attempt details. If the displayed estimate is above your ceiling, wait, try a supported alternative route or payment method, or raise the budget only after consciously accepting the higher maximum. Not every wallet displays an exact quote.
  5. Confirm the invoice and amount. Make sure the invoice you are paying is the one for which you selected the budget. A percentage setting can produce a different satoshi maximum when the invoice amount changes.
  6. Send and record the result. Keep the paid routing fee and payment outcome with the invoice record. That history helps a wallet improve path finding over time; the Builder’s Guide notes, “The more payments you make, the more accurate your path finding will become!”

LND: current API fields and their meaning

The current LND SendPaymentV2 API documents two absolute limits:

Field Unit Meaning Important behavior
fee_limit_sat satoshis Maximum total routing fee for the payment Mutually exclusive with fee_limit_msat
fee_limit_msat millisatoshis Maximum total routing fee with finer precision Mutually exclusive with fee_limit_sat

The same LND API reference cautions callers to set a fee limit because its documented default routing fee limit is zero. With a zero limit, only zero-fee routes are considered. Confirm the behavior of the exact LND release and interface you operate rather than relying on a remembered default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LND’s command-line help also documents:

  • --fee_limit, a maximum in satoshis;
  • --fee_limit_percent, a maximum percentage of the payment amount.

Use one style deliberately. A fixed limit gives a hard satoshi maximum; a percentage limit can become much larger in absolute terms as the invoice grows. Keep the unit visible in configuration and logs so a value intended as satoshis is not accidentally treated as millisatoshis or a percentage.

Illustrative LND CLI calls

With an invoice stored in the shell variable $INVOICE, a fixed limit can be supplied as follows:

lncli sendpayment --pay_req="$INVOICE" --fee_limit=10

A percentage ceiling uses the separate percentage flag:

lncli sendpayment --pay_req="$INVOICE" --fee_limit_percent=1

Flag names and required payment arguments can change between releases. Run the help command on the installed binary and check the current SendPayment or SendPaymentV2 documentation before using a script in production:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
lncli sendpayment --help

For an API integration, populate exactly one of fee_limit_sat and fee_limit_msat in the SendPaymentV2 request. Keep the invoice and the selected limit together in application logs so a failed attempt can be diagnosed without guessing which budget was applied. If your application exposes both an absolute and a percentage setting, document which one takes precedence and test that behavior on the installed version rather than assuming the command-line semantics.

What older LND defaults mean

An older SendPayment API reference documents a default of 100% for payments of 1,000 sats or less and 5% for payments above 1,000 sats when no limit is specified. Those are version-sensitive legacy API defaults, not a protocol rule and not a recommendation. Current interfaces may require an explicit limit or use different defaults. Check the documentation that matches your installed LND version and the specific API method your application calls.

Never infer a wallet’s default from the behavior of a different LND release. A script that omits the limit may therefore behave differently after an upgrade or when moved from the legacy API to SendPaymentV2. An explicit, reviewed limit is easier to audit than an undocumented default.

Can you know the fee before paying an invoice?

You can often obtain an estimate after a wallet constructs a candidate route, but the network does not publish a guaranteed price for every invoice in advance. The final route can change, a channel can lack directional liquidity, and an MPP attempt can use several paths with separate base fees. Consequently, a fee preview is an estimate unless the wallet explicitly defines it otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A preview is still useful as a decision point. Compare the displayed amount with your maximum, check whether the wallet is showing the total fee or only a portion of it, and remember that a route may be rebuilt between the preview and settlement. If the estimate exceeds your budget, waiting or using another supported payment method is safer than silently accepting a higher charge.

LND describes payment probes as an integration technique for testing a route and giving users more accurate fee information. A probe is not a generic guarantee for consumer wallets: it can limit the use of multi-part payments, and forwarding nodes are not compensated for the probe. Use it only when you control an integration and have confirmed the behavior in the LND documentation for your version.

When a low fee cap causes failure

The wallet reports no route under the limit

The cap may exclude every route whose advertised fees fit the invoice. Increase the ceiling only to a value you have approved, or wait and retry when routing conditions may differ. If the payment is not urgent, another supported payment method can avoid paying a fee you consider excessive.

A qualifying route still fails

A route can satisfy the fee limit yet fail because a channel’s usable balance is private and directional. A higher cap may allow a different route, but it cannot create liquidity and does not guarantee success. Retrying can produce a different path; repeated failures may justify using another wallet, route source or payment method rather than continually raising the cap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An MPP attempt costs more than expected

Splitting around a bottleneck can make delivery possible, but each constituent path can add a base fee. Review the payment details after completion. If your wallet exposes a maximum total fee, that cap still applies to the aggregate routing fees; if it exposes only per-part information, confirm how the wallet enforces the overall limit.

The estimate changes between attempts

Different attempts may select different paths, and private balances can make one path fail while another succeeds. Treat each displayed estimate as tied to that attempt, not as a permanent price for the invoice. Keep your approved ceiling unchanged unless you deliberately decide that the payment’s urgency justifies a larger maximum.

Ways to avoid overpaying without making payments impossible

  • Keep the limit tied to the payment. Do not reuse a generous cap automatically for every invoice size.
  • Separate urgency from convenience. A time-sensitive payment may justify a larger authorized maximum than a payment that can wait.
  • Review small invoices carefully. A fixed base fee can represent a large percentage of a small payment even when the satoshi amount looks minor.
  • Convert percentages to sats. Check the worst-case absolute amount before approving a large invoice.
  • Use previews as warnings, not promises. Decline or reconsider an attempt whose estimate exceeds your budget, while recognizing that an estimate can change before settlement.
  • Do not equate a failed attempt with an overpriced route. Liquidity, not just price, is a common cause of failure.
  • Record actual fees. Comparing paid fees with your ceilings over time lets you adjust budgets based on your own payment pattern rather than an arbitrary network-wide percentage.
  • Change one variable at a time. If a payment fails, note whether you changed the cap, the route source or the payment method; otherwise you cannot tell which change affected the result.

Do not confuse a sender’s cap with a node operator’s fee policy

The cap discussed here is configured by the person or application sending a payment. A routing node operator sets the fees that node charges others. In LND, operators configure per-channel base and proportional policies through lnd.conf, lncli openchannel or lncli updatechanpolicy, and can inspect policies and earnings with lncli feereport.

Operator pricing has a different trade-off: fees set too high can discourage traffic, while fees set too low can deplete channel liquidity quickly. Changing your own forwarding policy does not change the maximum routing fee you authorize when paying someone else, and changing a sender cap does not alter the fees your node advertises.

Practical decision examples

A small, non-urgent payment

Start with a modest fixed ceiling that you can explain in sats. Because base fees are a larger share of a small invoice, reject an estimate that consumes a material portion of the payment and use another method or wait if the payment is optional.

A large payment with a percentage budget

A percentage can scale automatically, but convert it to sats before sending. If the resulting absolute maximum is more than you would willingly spend, replace it with a fixed limit or lower the percentage. This conversion prevents a large invoice from silently authorizing a large routing bill.

An urgent payment with repeated route failures

Raise the cap only in deliberate increments and inspect whether the failures mention liquidity or route unavailability. A higher ceiling may broaden route selection, but if the problem is directional channel balance, continuing to raise the limit may spend more without solving delivery.

An integration serving many invoice sizes

Expose the unit clearly in the user interface and log the chosen value with every payment request. A percentage may simplify a varied payment mix, while a fixed maximum gives compliance or accounting teams a predictable upper bound. Whichever method you choose, verify how the installed LND API handles omitted fields, zero values and mutually exclusive fields.

A concise pre-send checklist

  • Is the number a routing-fee maximum rather than an on-chain fee estimate?
  • Did you verify the wallet and software version’s control and default?
  • For LND, did you choose exactly one of sats or millisats, or intentionally use the percentage flag?
  • Would the absolute satoshi amount still be acceptable if the invoice is large?
  • Are you prepared for a low cap to produce a failed attempt?
  • Could multi-part routing add several base fees?
  • If the estimate is too high, do you have permission to wait, retry or use another payment method?
  • After settlement or failure, did you record the actual fee and outcome?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Lightning fee limit pay for?

It caps the total routing fees paid to forwarding nodes for that payment. It does not cap Bitcoin miner fees for channel commitment or closing transactions.

Is there one safe Lightning fee percentage for everyone?

No. The appropriate ceiling depends on payment size, urgency, route availability and your willingness to retry or use another method. A cap is a personal maximum, not a protocol standard.

What happens if I set the LND fee limit to zero?

LND considers only routes advertising zero routing fees. If every usable route charges a fee, the payment may fail.

Can I set both fee_limit_sat and fee_limit_msat?

No. The current LND SendPaymentV2 API documents them as mutually exclusive. Supply one absolute unit, or use the CLI’s percentage option where appropriate.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a higher fee cap guarantee that my payment will succeed?

No. Channel balances are private and directional. A route can meet the fee limit and still fail because the required channel lacks usable liquidity.

Why might an MPP payment cost more?

A multi-part payment can use several paths to bypass a bottleneck, but each path may add a separate fixed base fee.

Can a wallet tell me the exact fee before I pay an invoice?

It may show an estimate after constructing a candidate route, but the final route can change and liquidity can cause failure. Treat previews as estimates unless the wallet explicitly guarantees otherwise.

What are LND payment probes?

LND describes probes as an integration technique for testing a route and improving fee information. They may limit multi-part payments, and forwarding nodes are not compensated, so they are not a universal consumer-wallet guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the old 100% and 5% LND defaults recommendations?

No. Those figures come from older SendPayment documentation: 100% for payments at or below 1,000 sats and 5% above that when no limit was specified. They are version-sensitive defaults, not protocol rules or recommended policies.

How is a sender fee cap different from a routing node’s fee policy?

A sender cap limits what your payment may spend. A node operator’s policy sets the base and proportional fees that node advertises to other senders; the two settings are independent.

The Bottom Line

Set a Lightning routing-fee ceiling you can afford for the specific invoice, verify the exact wallet and LND version behavior, and remember that a low cap can block routes while a high cap cannot fix private liquidity. Fixed limits provide a hard satoshi maximum; percentage limits scale but can authorize large absolute fees. Routing caps never control separate on-chain costs.
