Set the alert in your broker’s app or website, then confirm that the broker evaluates custom thresholds against extended-hours or overnight quotes. A broker may display overnight prices or accept overnight orders without making every custom alert trigger outside the regular session. Treat the alert as a notification, not an order: it does not reserve a price or guarantee an execution.
What an around-the-clock stock alert actually does
A price alert watches a condition you define, such as a stock moving above $120 or below $95, and sends a notification when the broker’s quote feed says the condition has been met. The alert itself does not buy or sell anything. You still have to open an order ticket and decide whether the available price, spread, order type and session rules are acceptable.

“Around the clock” is also broker-specific. Most services mean a five-day trading week with selected securities available in pre-market, after-hours or overnight sessions. It does not mean every listed stock trades continuously, and it usually excludes weekends. Overnight prices can come from a broker’s alternative trading system or another venue, so two platforms may show different prices at the same moment.

Check overnight coverage before creating the alert
Do these checks before choosing a threshold. They prevent the most common mistake: assuming that a 24-hour quote display automatically turns a regular-session alert into an overnight alert.

- Confirm the session. Find the broker’s current page for pre-market, after-hours and overnight trading. Record the days, times and time zone; schedules can change for holidays and half-days.
- Confirm the security. Overnight access normally covers a defined list of stocks and ETFs. A security can be eligible at one broker and unavailable at another, or fail to trade in a particular session because there is too little interest.
- Confirm the alert condition. Look specifically for wording such as “extended-hours alerts,” “overnight price alerts” or a session selector. A general holding or watchlist movement alert may use a different rule from a custom price-level alert.
- Confirm the quote source. Ask whether the alert uses the broker’s displayed extended-hours quote, a consolidated feed or only regular-session prices.
- Confirm delivery and limits. Check whether notifications arrive by push, email or both, and whether the broker throttles repeated alerts.
If the support material does not state that custom alerts can trigger overnight, contact the broker and ask that exact question for your account type and platform. Do not infer the answer from the ability to place an overnight order.
Current examples of broker-defined trading windows
The following schedules illustrate why you must use the provider’s own session page rather than a universal “24-hour market” assumption. Times are Eastern Time and are subject to each provider’s eligibility rules, maintenance windows and holiday schedules.

Set a custom alert in a broker app or website
Labels differ, but the workflow is similar on most platforms. Use a custom price threshold rather than a generic percentage-movement notification when you need a precise level.
- Open the instrument. Search for the stock or ETF by ticker and open its quote or chart page.
- Open notifications. Look for a bell icon, “Alerts,” “Notifications” or a menu beside the chart.
- Choose a price condition. Select “Price moves above,” “Price moves below,” “crosses,” or the equivalent. Enter the exact level, using the quote currency shown by the broker.
- Select the session if offered. Choose regular hours, extended hours, overnight, or all available sessions. If no session choice appears, read the help text to determine which quote stream the alert uses.
- Choose delivery. Enable push notifications and, where supported, email. Permit notifications at the operating-system level and in the broker’s account settings.
- Save and review. Check the symbol, direction, price, session, recurrence and expiration. Some alerts are one-time; others remain active until cancelled.
- Test the path. Use a non-critical watchlist symbol or an alert level likely to be reached during an active session. Confirm that the notification arrives on the intended device before relying on it overnight.
Robinhood: exact setup path
Robinhood documents custom alerts for a stock or ETF in its mobile app and web classic interface. Menu names can change with app releases, so compare the labels on your current screen with the provider’s help page.

- Open the stock or ETF and display its chart.
- Select the Notifications bell.
- For a stock or ETF, select Price alerts.
- Select Add an alert, then choose Price moves above or Price moves below.
- Enter the target level and save.
Robinhood says custom alerts are delivered as push notifications. To enable email notifications for holdings, use Account → Menu → Settings → Notification and messages → Email notifications → My holdings → Stock price movements. That email setting is a holding-movement notification and should not be confused with a custom threshold.
Robinhood also offers general price-movement alerts for holdings and watchlists. The documented settings use 5% or 10% movements and include a separately configurable overnight-alert frequency. Those percentage rules are different from a custom “above $X” or “below $Y” alert. The help instructions do not establish that every custom price alert triggers during Robinhood’s overnight market, so verify that point for the symbol and account before depending on it.
How to verify that an alert can trigger overnight
Use this verification sequence when a broker advertises overnight trading but does not clearly describe custom-alert behavior.

- Read the alert help page, not only the trading-hours page. Search the broker’s support site for “custom price alert” and “extended-hours alert.” Look for an explicit statement about the quote session used.
- Inspect the alert editor. A session dropdown, an “include extended hours” switch or a note beside the threshold is stronger evidence than a generic 24/5 banner.
- Check the symbol’s eligibility. Confirm that the exact ticker, share class and ETF are included in overnight trading. Eligibility lists may change.
- Compare the displayed quote. During an active overnight window, note whether the chart labels the price as overnight or extended-hours and whether the alert preview references that feed.
- Ask support in writing. Ask: “Will a custom alert on [ticker] at [price] trigger from overnight or extended-hours trades in my account, and which quote source is used?” Save the answer and its date.
- Review the notification history. If the broker provides an alert log, confirm the timestamp, trigger price and session. A push arriving after a delay can reflect notification delivery rather than the exact trade time.
If the provider cannot answer clearly, treat the alert as regular-session only. You can still monitor the overnight quote manually, but do not assume an unattended notification will arrive.

Alerts, quotes and orders are three different things

These distinctions matter when a stock briefly touches your level. An alert may fire on a trade that is not available to you, on a quote from a venue with a different spread, or after the price has moved away. If you decide to trade, review the order ticket’s session designation, limit-price requirement and estimated bid-ask spread.
Overnight liquidity and volatility can change the meaning of a trigger
Webull and Schwab describe lower liquidity and higher volatility outside regular sessions. Fewer participants can mean wider spreads, larger jumps between trades and less displayed depth. A threshold crossed by one small transaction may not represent a price at which you can buy or sell a normal position.
Coinbase Capital Markets warns that extended-hours prices on one system may differ from prices on concurrently operating systems. A stock can therefore trigger an alert on one platform while another platform shows a different last trade or no trade at all. Treat the alert as a prompt to investigate, not as proof of a market-wide price.
Order restrictions are also common. Webull says its extended-hours sessions accept limit orders only and require the trader to choose Extended Hours. Schwab says OTC securities are unavailable in its extended-hours and overnight sessions. These are platform-specific examples, not rules for every broker, so read the order-entry instructions for your service.

Notification limits and delivery failures
Alerts can fail operationally even when the price condition is correct. Check that push permissions are enabled, the app is signed in, battery-saving software is not blocking background notifications, and the device has a data connection. Email can be delayed by filtering or provider outages; push delivery can be delayed by the phone’s operating system.
Some brokers throttle alerts. Trading 212 documents limits of one notification per instrument per 120 seconds, five per account per 60 seconds, 30 per 60 minutes and 100 per 24 hours. Those limits are Trading 212’s policy, not an industry standard. If you monitor many symbols or set tight thresholds, a quota can suppress later messages. Keep a written list of critical levels and check the broker’s alert history when available.
To reduce missed or noisy notifications:
- Use one clearly named alert per important level rather than many nearly identical thresholds.
- Set a recurrence or re-arm option only when repeated messages are genuinely useful.
- Enable both push and email if the broker supports both and the event is time-sensitive.
- Keep the broker app updated, but recheck alert settings after an update.
- Do not rely on a single phone or notification channel for a position that requires continuous supervision.
Common problems and fixes
The alert never triggered overnight
First check whether the stock actually traded in the broker’s overnight session. Then verify that the alert was active, the threshold direction was correct and the alert included extended hours. A chart may show a price from a different session than the alert engine uses. If the broker’s documentation is silent, ask support for the symbol-specific rule rather than recreating the alert repeatedly.
The alert triggered, but I could not get that price
Review the timestamp, venue label and bid-ask spread. A last-trade alert can fire when the executable ask or bid is already elsewhere. In a thin session, the displayed trade may involve a small quantity. Use a limit order and confirm the session’s order rules; never assume the alert price is an available fill.

I received too many notifications
Check whether you created both a custom threshold and a 5% or 10% movement alert. Disable the duplicate rule or increase the spacing between levels. Also check account-level quotas, such as Trading 212’s documented rolling limits.
The ticker is unavailable overnight
Confirm the exact share class and security type. Some brokers limit overnight access to selected stocks and ETFs, while Schwab, for example, excludes OTC securities from its extended-hours and overnight sessions. If the symbol is not eligible, no alert setting can create an overnight trade or quote.
The schedule changed around a holiday
Read the broker’s holiday and half-day notice. A schedule such as Sunday evening through Friday evening describes the normal week, not every calendar date. Recheck the session before setting an alert for an earnings release, economic report or other event.

No provider described here can be ranked as universally best. Compare the features that determine whether an alert will be useful for your situation.

A practical setup checklist
- Write down the ticker, target price, direction and whether the alert is for a one-time crossing or repeated monitoring.
- Open the broker’s current session and eligibility page and verify that the symbol trades in the period you care about.
- Create the custom alert in the quote screen, not merely a generic watchlist movement alert.
- Select the overnight or extended-hours option if one is available; otherwise obtain written confirmation of the quote session used.
- Enable push notifications and a backup channel, then test delivery.
- Record the alert’s creation time, expiration, recurrence and session settings.
- When a notification arrives, inspect the quote timestamp, venue, bid, ask and spread before placing any order.
- Use the order type allowed for that session and remember that an alert never guarantees execution.
Bottom line for overnight monitoring
The reliable method is simple but provider-specific: create a custom above-or-below price alert, verify that the broker evaluates it against the overnight quote for that exact security, and test notification delivery before relying on it. Extended-hours trading brings thinner liquidity, wider spreads, different prices across venues and stricter order rules. Keep the alert as an information tool, and make the trading decision only after checking the live quote and the session’s execution conditions.
