How to Set Price Alerts and Stop-Loss Orders in a Brokerage Account

A price alert only notifies you when a security reaches a condition you choose; it does not place a trade. A stop order is a trading instruction: when its stop price is reached, it becomes a market order. To set either one, open the security or trade ticket in your brokerage account, choose the supported alert or order type, enter the condition and required fields, save or submit, and then verify the alert or order in the account’s active list. Menu names, trigger rules, trading sessions, eligible securities, and notification options vary by broker, so the firm’s current help page and order preview control the final steps.

Price alerts and stop orders do different jobs

Use a price alert when you want information. You select a security and a condition—such as price moving above or below a target—and the platform sends a push notification, in-app message, email, or pop-up when its rules are met. No buy or sell order is submitted.

Use a stop order when you want the brokerage to attempt a trade after a specified price is reached. A standard stop, also called a stop-market order, changes into a market order at the trigger. The execution price is therefore not guaranteed to equal the stop price.

“Stop-loss” is common shorthand for a sell stop intended to exit a long position, but the term does not mean the order guarantees a maximum loss. A fast move, a gap between trading prices, or a brief price spike can produce an execution materially different from the stop price. A stop-limit order adds a limit price to constrain the execution price, but it can remain unfilled.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines the basic mechanics in its Stop Order explanation. Its current investor bulletin also warns that availability and handling vary by firm and that stop prices are not guaranteed execution prices: Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders – Investor Bulletin.

How to set a price alert

The exact clicks depend on the brokerage’s current app or website. The workflow below is deliberately platform-neutral and should be checked against the firm’s help documentation before you rely on an alert.

  1. Sign in and locate the security. Search for the ticker or name, then open its quote, quote details, chart, or alerts area. Confirm that you selected the intended security and listing.
  2. Open the alert control. Look for labels such as “Set Alert,” “Create alert,” a bell icon, or “Price alerts.” Some brokers place this control on the quote page; others put it in a separate alerts center.
  3. Choose a price condition. Select whether the alert should fire when the price moves above or below a target. Enter the target value exactly as the platform requests. If the broker offers other conditions, read their definitions rather than assuming they use the same data or timing as a price alert.
  4. Save the alert. Submit the condition and wait for an on-screen confirmation. A saved alert is not proof that notifications will reach you; delivery settings are a separate check.
  5. Verify the active-alert list. Open the account’s alerts, stock alerts, or notifications page. Confirm the symbol, direction, target, status, and any expiration or recurrence shown by the firm.
  6. Check delivery permissions. Review whether the alert uses push, email, text, in-app messages, or a platform pop-up. On a phone, the brokerage app must have permission to send notifications; device-level focus, battery-saving, or privacy settings can suppress them.
  7. Test your operating assumption. Note what the broker says about delayed quotes, market sessions, and whether an alert can fire more than once. Do not assume an alert will monitor every venue or every trading session unless the account terms say it does.

Broker-specific examples are illustrations, not universal instructions

One current Schwab Mobile tutorial shows a user opening quote details, tapping “Set an Alert,” selecting “Target price,” choosing a direction and price, saving, and reviewing or editing alerts under “Stock Alerts.” The tutorial is available at How to create stock alerts using Schwab Mobile.

Robinhood’s help page describes opening an asset chart, using the notification control, selecting “Price alerts,” choosing an above- or below-price condition, and saving. It also notes that delivery depends on service and device settings: Price alerts.

A Fidelity Active Trader help page illustrates another pattern: select “Set Alert,” enter a symbol, choose “Price Alert,” set the parameters, and choose delivery settings. Its interface may be older, so use it as an example of the fields a broker may request, not as a promise that your account has the same labels: Active Trader Tools: Alert Help.

How to enter a stop or stop-limit order

A stop order belongs on the brokerage’s trade ticket, not in the notification center. Before entering it, know whether you are trying to sell a position you hold or buy to cover a short position, and confirm the security, quantity, and account.

  1. Open the trade ticket. Select the security and the account in which the position or short exposure exists. Check that the order side is buy or sell as intended.
  2. Select the order type. Choose “Stop,” “Stop market,” “Stop-loss,” “Stop-limit,” or the broker’s equivalent. Do not assume a field labeled “stop” means stop-limit; read the ticket’s definition.
  3. Enter the stop condition. For a sell stop protecting a long position, the commonly used arrangement is a trigger below the current market. For a buy stop used with a short position, the commonly used arrangement is a trigger above the market. The appropriate level depends on your plan; no universal price is suitable for every position.
  4. Add a limit price only when using stop-limit. The stop price activates the order. The limit price then sets the least favorable price at which the resulting limit order may execute, according to the broker’s rules. A stop-limit order can be left unfilled if the market moves past that limit.
  5. Enter quantity and duration. Specify the number of shares or other units and choose the available time-in-force, such as day or a longer-duration instruction. Review whether the order applies during regular trading hours, extended sessions, or both; these choices differ by firm and security.
  6. Read the preview carefully. Confirm the account, symbol, buy or sell side, quantity, stop price, limit price if present, duration, session eligibility, and any warnings. A preview is the last opportunity to catch a reversed side or misplaced decimal before submission.
  7. Submit the order and save the confirmation. The confirmation should identify whether the order is accepted, rejected, or pending review. An order is not active merely because the ticket closed.
  8. Check open orders. Verify the order’s status, trigger and limit prices, quantity remaining, duration, and cancellation controls in the open-orders area. Monitor it there rather than relying on memory.

The SEC’s Understanding Order Types – Investor Bulletin explains that brokers do not all offer the same order types or apply identical policies. The SEC and FINRA therefore recommend reviewing the specific firm’s terms before submitting an order.

Stop versus stop-limit versus price alert

Choice What happens when the condition is met Main benefit Main limitation
Price alert The platform sends a notification according to its alert rules. You receive information without automatically trading. It does not submit a buy or sell order, and delivery depends on platform and device settings.
Stop (stop-market) When the stop price is reached, the order becomes a market order. The broker attempts execution at available market prices. The execution price may differ materially from the stop price, especially during a gap or rapid move.
Stop-limit When the stop price is reached, the order becomes a limit order. The limit price constrains how far from the stated limit you will accept execution. The order may not execute if the market moves beyond the limit or does not return to an acceptable price.

These distinctions come from the SEC’s stop-order and order-type explanations (Stop Order and Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders – Investor Bulletin). FINRA’s May 2016 Regulatory Notice 16-19 likewise says firms should tell customers that a stop price is not a guaranteed execution price and that volatile moves can trigger an order: Regulatory Notice 16-19.

What happens when a stop-loss is triggered?

A standard stop becomes a market order

The stop price is an activation point, not a sale price. Once the broker’s trigger condition is met, a standard stop becomes a market order and is sent for execution under the firm’s routing and session rules. The market order seeks available execution, but the price can be higher or lower than the stop, depending on current bids, offers, liquidity, and the speed of the move.

Gaps can bypass the stop price

If a security closes at one level and opens or trades next at a substantially different level, the stop can activate at the new, less favorable market. The same issue can occur during an abrupt intraday move. A stop is therefore not a guaranteed loss cap, insurance policy, or promise that an order will fill at the selected number.

A brief move can still activate it

A short-lived price move can reach the trigger and then reverse. If the stop has activated, the resulting market order can execute even though the security later returns to its earlier range. The trigger convention—such as which trade or quote data the firm uses—must be confirmed in the broker’s rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A stop-limit can protect price but miss execution

With stop-limit, the stop activates the order and the limit sets the price boundary for execution. If the market moves through that boundary, the order can remain open or expire without a fill. You must decide whether controlling the worst acceptable execution price is more important than increasing the likelihood of an execution; the broker’s disclosures should explain how unfilled orders are displayed and handled.

Broker rules to check before submitting

Order mechanics are not identical across firms. Open the current agreement, order-type disclosure, and help page for your account and check each item below:

  • Trigger basis: Find out what market data the firm uses to determine that the stop price has been reached and whether the basis differs between regular and extended sessions.
  • Trading hours: Confirm whether stops and alerts operate only during regular hours or can be active in premarket and after-hours sessions. Some securities may not be eligible outside regular hours.
  • Time-in-force: Determine whether the order is for the day, remains open for a longer period, or has another expiration rule. A recurring alert and a multi-day order are not the same thing.
  • Security eligibility: Stocks, exchange-traded products, options, mutual funds, and other instruments can have different order-type support. Never infer eligibility from another security.
  • Short-sale and account requirements: A buy stop associated with a short position can be subject to borrowing, margin, and risk rules that do not apply to a cash long position.
  • Routing and execution disclosures: Read how the firm handles market orders, limit orders, partial or unfilled instructions, and volatile markets.
  • Monitoring and cancellation: Learn where open orders and active alerts appear, how to amend or cancel them, and when a cancellation is confirmed. A cancellation request is not the same as a completed cancellation.
  • Notification reliability: For alerts, verify the delivery channel, quote delays, app permissions, and whether the service can be unavailable during maintenance or connectivity problems.

The SEC’s investor bulletins emphasize that firms may not offer every order type and may impose different policies. The explanations are U.S.-oriented; investors using non-U.S. accounts should consult their local regulator and the account’s own terms.

How to verify, change, or cancel an alert or order

Verify a price alert

Open the active-alert or stock-alert list and match the symbol, above-or-below direction, target condition, delivery method, and status. If the alert is missing, repeat the setup and look for an error or confirmation message. If it appears active but no notification arrives, check the app’s permission settings, email filters, logged-in device, and the broker’s stated session or quote limitations.

Verify a stop order

Open the account’s open-orders page and check that the order is accepted or working rather than rejected, canceled, expired, or filled. Match the side, quantity, stop price, limit price if applicable, time-in-force, and session eligibility to your intended instruction. After a trigger, look for the resulting market or limit order and then the execution report; the original stop may no longer appear as an untriggered order.

Amend or cancel carefully

Use the broker’s “Edit,” “Replace,” or “Cancel” control and wait for confirmation. Changing a stop price, quantity, duration, or order type can cause the firm to cancel the original and submit a replacement, which may receive a new timestamp or status. Do not assume a canceled order can still protect a position, and do not assume an edited order remains eligible for the same trading session.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Confusing an alert with an order

An alert only communicates a condition. If you need a trade instruction, use the trade ticket and verify an open-order confirmation. If you only wanted a notification, avoid submitting a stop by mistake.

Reversing the order side

A sell stop is commonly associated with an existing long position, while a buy stop is commonly associated with a short position. Recheck the buy-or-sell side on the preview; a correct price with the wrong side can create an unintended position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating the stop price as a guaranteed exit price

Fast moves and gaps can produce a materially different execution. If a defined price boundary is essential, understand that stop-limit may leave the order unfilled instead. The choice is a trade-off, not a way to obtain both guaranteed execution and guaranteed price.

Ignoring order duration

A day order may expire while a longer-duration order may remain active beyond the session you had in mind. Check the expiration and review open orders after market close, corporate actions, or a change in your position.

Assuming every security or session supports the same order

Order availability, eligible securities, trigger data, and extended-hours behavior vary. Read the ticket’s warning and the firm’s current policy each time you use an unfamiliar instrument or session.

Relying on one notification channel

Push delivery can be blocked by a device setting, while email can be delayed or filtered. Confirm the active channel and do not treat an alert as a substitute for monitoring an account when timing is critical.

A practical decision framework

Choose a price alert when

  • You want to review news, liquidity, or market conditions before deciding whether to trade.
  • You are tracking a level but do not want an automatic order.
  • You need a reminder to reassess a position rather than an instruction to exit or enter.

Choose a standard stop when

  • Your priority is having the broker attempt an execution after the trigger is reached.
  • You accept that the execution price can differ from the stop price.
  • You have checked the firm’s trigger, session, duration, and security-eligibility rules.

Choose stop-limit only after understanding the non-fill risk

  • You need a price boundary and accept that the order may remain unfilled.
  • You can monitor the open order and have a plan for an unfilled or expired instruction.
  • You understand how the broker displays the activated limit order and how to cancel or replace it.

Worked mechanics without choosing a stop level

Suppose you hold a long position and want notification when the market reaches a level you are watching. A price alert sends the notice; you decide what to do. If instead you submit a sell stop, reaching the broker’s trigger activates a market sell order. If you submit a sell stop-limit, reaching the trigger activates a limit sell order, which may execute only at the limit or a more favorable price under the firm’s rules and may not execute at all if the market moves away.

For a short position, the common protective direction is a buy stop above the market. The same distinction applies: a standard buy stop becomes a market order after activation, while a buy stop-limit becomes a limit order and can remain unfilled. These examples describe order behavior, not a recommended level, position size, or trading strategy.

Questions to answer before you click Submit

  • Am I setting a notification or submitting a trade?
  • Is the security and account correct?
  • Is the side correct for my existing position or short exposure?
  • What exactly activates the order under this broker’s trigger convention?
  • Do I understand the difference between market execution and a limit-price constraint?
  • What happens if the market gaps, moves quickly, or trades only briefly at the trigger?
  • What are the order’s hours, duration, eligibility, and expiration?
  • Where will I see the active alert, working order, triggered order, fill, rejection, or cancellation?

Regulatory context and geographic limits

The SEC’s definitions and investor bulletins are written for U.S. markets and U.S.-regulated brokerage practices. FINRA’s notice supplies additional U.S. investor-protection guidance about volatile price moves and non-guaranteed stop execution. A broker outside the United States may use different terminology, trigger data, session rules, or order types. In that case, follow the local regulator’s investor guidance and the account agreement that governs your trades.

Bottom line

Set a price alert from the security’s quote or alert area, save it, and verify it in the active-alert list with the desired delivery permissions. Enter a stop or stop-limit order from the trade ticket, review every field and the broker’s rules, submit it, and confirm its working status in open orders. A stop is an instruction to activate another order—not a guaranteed execution price—and a stop-limit can fail to execute. The current rules of the brokerage holding your account determine the exact labels, trigger conventions, sessions, and eligibility.
