How to Set Gambling Limits and Self-Exclusion on Betting Apps (Great Britain Guide)

The quickest way to reduce betting through an app is to set an account-level gross deposit limit, then use formal self-exclusion if you need a complete stop. In Great Britain, regulated operators must offer 24-hour, 7-day and 1-month gross-deposit periods, make the controls easy to reach, and apply a reduction immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. An increase must wait at least 24 hours and then be confirmed. Self-exclusion is stronger: you can exclude from one operator or make one request through GAMSTOP for online operators covered by that scheme.

App menus and terminology vary, and these regulatory details are specific to Great Britain. If you are elsewhere, check your local regulator and the betting app’s help pages.

How do I set a deposit limit on a betting app?

Most apps place the control under Responsible gambling, Safer gambling, Account or Limits. The exact labels and screen sequence are set by each operator, not by a single regulator-wide menu. Start from the account or profile area, and also check the deposit screen if you cannot find the setting.

  1. Open the account controls. Sign in and look for Responsible gambling, Safer gambling, Account or Limits. On some apps, the link is in a menu opened from your balance or profile icon.
  2. Choose a deposit limit. Select the option that measures money paid into the account. In Great Britain, the regulatory standard is an account-level gross deposit limit, with periods of 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month.
  3. Choose the period and amount. Enter the maximum amount you want to pay in during that period. Set a figure you can maintain without relying on willpower at a later point in the week.
  4. Read the definition before saving. Confirm whether the app is measuring gross deposits, net deposits, losses, stakes or another activity. Also check whether the limit covers the whole account or only a product, sport, casino area or channel.
  5. Save and verify. Look for an on-screen confirmation, email or account summary showing the amount and period. If the new cap is lower, it should take effect immediately under the Gambling Commission’s guidance unless a technical failure prevents it.

Under RTS 12, customers must be prompted to consider a limit at registration or before their first deposit or payment. Financial-limit tools must be readily accessible from the homepage and deposit screens. The requirements apply to gambling covered by the standard, except subscription lotteries. See the Gambling Commission’s RTS 12 financial-limits guidance for the regulator’s wording.

What a gross deposit limit does—and does not—measure

A gross deposit limit counts every payment into the account during the selected period, regardless of withdrawals. It is not the same calculation as a loss limit or a net-deposit limit. For example, depositing £100, withdrawing £80 and depositing another £20 still produces £120 of gross deposits during the period, even though the net amount deposited is £40.

Control What it measures What to check
Gross deposit limit All money paid into the account during a set period, whether or not you later withdraw funds Whether it is account-level and whether the app offers 24-hour, 7-day and 1-month periods
Net deposit limit Deposits after withdrawals are taken into account How the operator defines the calculation and the period used
Loss limit Losses calculated under the operator’s rules Which products, bets and credits are included
Stake limit The amount staked rather than the amount paid into the account Whether it applies to each bet, a product or a time period
Time control Time spent using the service Whether it pauses play, blocks access or simply provides a reminder

Since 30 June 2026, the term deposit limit is reserved in Great Britain for a limit based solely on money paid into the account over a set duration. That distinction is intended to stop deposit, loss and net-deposit controls being presented as interchangeable. The Gambling Commission announced the staged changes on 7 October 2025 in its notice on new deposit-limit rules.

Which periods are available in Great Britain?

For a gross deposit limit, RTS 12 requires the operator to offer these three periods at account level:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Period What the cap covers
24 hours Gross deposits during a 24-hour period
7 days Gross deposits during a 7-day period
1 month Gross deposits during a 1-month period

An operator may offer additional controls or different products, but a limit set on one product or channel does not necessarily govern the rest of the service. Confirm the scope before you rely on the cap. If you set more than one timeframe, the most restrictive combination applies.

Example: how simultaneous limits interact

Suppose you set a £10 daily cap and a £100 weekly cap. The daily rule allows no more than £10 on any day, while the weekly rule allows no more than £100 in seven days. Over a seven-day week, the daily cap permits at most £70, so it is the more restrictive practical limit. A deposit that would exceed either active rule should be refused or blocked by the account controls.

What happens if I lower my deposit limit?

A request to reduce a financial limit should take effect immediately under the Commission’s guidance, unless a technical failure prevents it. Once the lower cap is active, further deposits are restricted by the new amount and period. The app may show a confirmation message or send an email; retain that record if the account later appears to accept a payment above the cap.

The Commission’s 2025 changes also require operators to make requests to decrease a limit immediate, and to provide accessible links and six-month review reminders. These changes are designed to make the control easier to use rather than to encourage frequent changes.

Can I increase a limit later?

Increasing a limit is deliberately slower than reducing one. The request must remain subject to a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours, followed by a further positive confirmation from you. Until both conditions are met, the previous lower limit remains in force. If you change your mind during the waiting period, do not confirm the increase; the lower cap should continue to apply.

The same timing principle applies whether you are changing the amount, moving to a less restrictive period or replacing a more protective combination of limits. If you need to gamble less immediately, reduce the limit instead of requesting an increase and relying on a later cancellation.

How do I block myself from betting apps?

Use self-exclusion when your aim is to stop gambling with an operator rather than merely cap deposits. The Gambling Commission describes it as a formal agreement for people who recognize that gambling is harmful and want support to stop.

Exclude from one operator

  1. Open the app’s Responsible gambling, Safer gambling or Help area.
  2. Select Self-exclusion, not a short time-out or ordinary account closure.
  3. Choose the exclusion period offered and complete the operator’s identity or confirmation steps.
  4. Save the confirmation and note the operator’s support contact in case access is not removed correctly.

Each gambling business must have its own self-exclusion arrangements. An exclusion from one operator does not automatically cover another operator unless a multi-operator scheme applies.

Use GAMSTOP for online operators in Great Britain

GAMSTOP is the Gambling Commission-identified route for making one request to exclude from online operators covered by the scheme. It has wider reach than an exclusion set only with one app, but it is still limited to participating online operators within its coverage. Register through the official GAMSTOP service, provide the requested identity details and select the exclusion period. Keep the confirmation so you can demonstrate when the request was made.

If you also use betting shops, bingo venues or other land-based services, ask each relevant business about its own exclusion arrangement; an online multi-operator request does not automatically describe every gambling setting.

What should happen after self-exclusion?

Under the Commission’s guidance, the operator must close the excluded account, return money held in it and remove your details from its marketing databases. The business must take reasonable steps to prevent further gambling while the exclusion is active.

Self-exclusion is not an effortless technical guarantee. The Commission acknowledges that a breach can occur. If you manage to gamble while excluded, tell the operator promptly, explain what happened and ask how it will correct the account and marketing records. Keep screenshots, transaction references and the date and time of any contact.

Deposit limit, self-exclusion or another barrier?

The right control depends on whether you want to manage a defined amount or make gambling unavailable. Compare the controls by measurement, reach and speed:

Loss or net-deposit limit Managing a different financial calculation Depends on the operator’s definition and scope Depends on the app’s rules
Self-exclusion with one operator Stopping access to a particular gambling business That operator After the exclusion agreement is completed

Blocking software Adding a device or browser barrier Devices or networks where it is installed After installation and activation
Bank or payment-provider block Preventing or adding friction to gambling payments Accounts or cards covered by the provider’s block After the provider activates the block

A financial limit controls activity within an account. Self-exclusion is a stop-focused agreement with one operator or a wider scheme. Blocking software and bank or payment-provider blocks add friction outside the betting app. Use them as complementary barriers, not as guaranteed substitutes for exclusion or personal support.

How to combine controls into a practical stop plan

  1. Set the lowest workable financial limit now. If you are not ready for exclusion, choose a gross deposit amount and period that prevents an impulsive top-up.
  2. Remove easy payment routes. Ask your bank or payment provider whether it offers a gambling-transaction block, and remove saved cards or instant-payment methods from the app where possible.
  3. Install blocking software. The Commission points people considering self-exclusion toward information on gambling-site blocking software. Install it on every device you use and protect the settings with a password that you do not keep readily available.
  4. Self-exclude when a cap is not enough. Use the operator’s own process, GAMSTOP where applicable, or both when you need broader coverage.
  5. Tell a support service or trusted person. The Commission recommends seeking support alongside self-exclusion. A support conversation can address urges, debt, triggers and recovery planning rather than relying on an app control alone.

The UK Government’s 2023 white paper describes bank and payment-provider blocks as an additional layer. It does not present them as a replacement for self-exclusion or support. For confidential advice in Great Britain, the Gambling Commission’s self-exclusion information explains the available arrangements and points readers toward help.

What if the limit or exclusion does not work?

The app accepts a deposit above a lower limit

  • Check whether the payment was made before the reduction became active or whether it was applied to another product or channel.
  • Review the limit definition: a gross deposit rule, loss rule and net-deposit rule can produce different results.
  • Save the transaction record and confirmation of the limit.
  • Contact the operator’s safer-gambling team and ask for a written explanation and correction.

An increase appears immediately

  • Do not assume the new amount is valid. An increase should wait at least 24 hours and require positive confirmation.
  • Check whether you accidentally confirmed a previously pending request.
  • Contact the operator and retain the timestamps and messages.

You can access an account after self-exclusion

  • Stop using the account and do not deposit.
  • Contact the operator immediately, state that you are self-excluded and request closure, return of funds and removal from marketing.
  • If the issue concerns a GAMSTOP-covered online operator, report it through the scheme’s support route as well.
  • Use blocking software and a payment block while the matter is investigated.

How common are these tools?

Historical figures in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s 2023 white paper provide context, not a prediction of what any individual app or user will experience. Gambling Commission data cited there found that 11% of online gamblers used financial limits, 5% used time-outs and 6% used reality checks. NatCen’s Patterns of Play research, also cited in the paper, found that 21.5% of accounts set deposit limits in the year studied. An academic study cited by the paper reported that 72.8% of people who used deposit limits were satisfied with the tool.

Satisfaction does not prove that a limit prevents harm, and these historical percentages should not be read as current app-level outcomes. They do show why it is useful to know the difference between a limit, a time-out and a formal exclusion before choosing one.

Great Britain rules versus other countries

The 24-hour, 7-day and 1-month gross-deposit periods, the account-level minimum, the immediate-reduction guidance and the 24-hour-plus-confirmation rule for increases come from Great Britain’s Gambling Commission framework. The Commission’s remote-sector guidance explains the scope of the Great Britain regime.

Do not assume another country uses the same terms, cooling-off period, multi-operator scheme or menu path. Outside Great Britain, identify the local gambling regulator, read the app’s responsible-gambling help page and ask whether a national self-exclusion service exists. Even within Great Britain, the app’s screens can differ, so use the account confirmation to verify what you actually set.

Key questions to answer before you tap Save

  • Is this a gross deposit, net deposit, loss, stake or time control?
  • Does it cover the whole account or only one product, channel or app area?
  • What are the exact start and end points of the 24-hour, 7-day or 1-month period?
  • Will a lower limit apply immediately?
  • What waiting period and confirmation are required to increase it?
  • If I need to stop, does this action self-exclude me or merely close the account temporarily?
  • Does the exclusion cover only this operator, or a multi-operator scheme such as GAMSTOP?
  • Where will the operator send confirmation and how can I contact safer-gambling support?

If answering these questions reveals that a limit still leaves you likely to bet, choose self-exclusion and add payment, device and human-support barriers instead of treating the limit as a promise that gambling will remain safe.
