On Kalshi, use Responsible Risk Management in the web sidebar or app menu. You can set a monthly personalized funding cap, take a Trading Break, or activate Voluntary Self-Exclusion. The funding cap limits new deposits; it does not automatically stop realized losses. Kalshi’s reviewed help pages do not document a separate user-set daily or monthly dollar-loss limit.
Polymarket’s official help page says its orderbook has no trading-size limits by design. The amount you can actually trade depends on available counterparties, orderbook depth, liquidity and the price impact of your order. These controls are self-management tools, not guarantees against loss.

Which limits are actually available?
Prediction-market platforms use several different kinds of controls, and the names can be misleading. A deposit cap controls how much fresh money can enter an account. A trading pause controls when you can place or manage trades. Self-exclusion blocks access for a selected period. A loss limit would automatically stop trading after losses reach a dollar amount.
Those functions are not interchangeable. The following table reflects the controls documented for Kalshi and Polymarket in help material dated January through May 2026.

How to set a deposit limit on Kalshi
Open Responsible Risk Management
- Sign in at kalshi.com on the web, or open the Kalshi app.
- On the web, open the sidebar menu. In the app, open the menu or profile icon.
- Select Responsible Risk Management.
- Choose the tool you want to configure and follow the on-screen confirmation steps.
Kalshi says a responsibility action remains in force until its expiration. It cannot be lifted or changed before that expiration, so read the term and amount carefully before confirming.
Set a personalized funding cap
Kalshi defines a personalized funding cap as “a maximum amount you are able to deposit to Kalshi in each calendar month.” It applies immediately to future deposits. If you later request a higher cap, the increase takes effect in the next calendar month rather than immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe cap limits deposits, not the value of positions you already hold and not the amount you could lose on an existing position. It also is not a spending allowance that resets when you withdraw money; the relevant period is the calendar month identified by Kalshi’s system.
Kalshi states that wire deposits are not currently accepted for users who have a personalized funding cap enabled. If a wire option disappears after you activate the cap, that may be the expected restriction rather than a payment error.
Choose an amount you can monitor
Before confirming a cap, total the money you might deposit through all supported funding methods during one calendar month. Include scheduled deposits and occasional additions, and set the cap below the point at which a failed or delayed deposit would create pressure to use another payment method. Because a cap increase does not take effect until the following calendar month, leave room for legitimate timing changes.

How to take a trading break on Kalshi
A Trading Break temporarily restricts trading for a day or more. It is a time-based pause, not a trigger tied to a dollar loss, percentage decline or number of contracts.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Kalshi’s web sidebar or the app’s menu/profile icon.
- Choose Responsible Risk Management.
- Select Trading Break.
- Pick the available duration, review the start and end information, and confirm.
Close positions before activating the break
Kalshi says that if you have open positions when a Trading Break begins, you cannot sell them during the break. A position can therefore remain exposed to market movement while you are unable to exit it. If you do not want to hold an open contract throughout the selected period, close it before starting the break and verify that the order has filled.
Do not confuse cancelling an unfilled order with closing a position. An order that has already executed creates a position; cancelling another pending order will not remove that exposure.
How to block yourself with Kalshi Voluntary Self-Exclusion
Voluntary Self-Exclusion restricts your access to Kalshi markets for a specified term. Kalshi says a request can be made on the website, through the API or in the app.
- Open Responsible Risk Management from the web sidebar or app menu.
- Select Voluntary Self-Exclusion.
- Choose the available exclusion term and read the confirmation language.
- Confirm the request and save the displayed end date for your records.
Open positions cannot be sold during the exclusion period. Close positions you do not want to carry before submitting the request, and check for any pending orders that could execute before the restriction starts.

Can you set a daily loss limit on a prediction market?
In the Kalshi responsible-trading pages reviewed for this guide, the documented tools are the personalized funding cap, Trading Break and Voluntary Self-Exclusion. Those pages do not document a separate user-configurable daily or monthly realized-loss limit.
That distinction matters:
- A funding cap stops or limits additional deposits after the monthly amount is reached. It does not calculate your net trading result.
- A Trading Break prevents trading for a selected time. It does not wait for a loss threshold and then close positions.
- Self-Exclusion blocks access for a selected term. It can limit future exposure by preventing access, but it is not a dollar-based stop applied after a specified loss.
If you need a dollar-based rule, write the amount down before trading and use the platform’s available pause or exclusion control when you reach it. Keep a separate record of deposits, withdrawals, realized results and the current value of open positions; the platform controls described above do not substitute for that accounting.
Does Polymarket cap trade size?
Polymarket’s official help article, dated January 11, 2026, says: “By design, the Polymarket orderbook does not have trading size limits. It matches willing buyers and sellers of any amount.” In practical terms, there is no fixed personal order-size ceiling described in that article.

No fixed ceiling does not mean every order will fill at the displayed price. Polymarket explains that a desired size may be impossible to execute or may move the price significantly when liquidity is thin. Before submitting a large order:
- Open the market’s orderbook.
- Inspect the quantity available at each price level on the side you intend to trade.
- Estimate how far through the book your order would consume liquidity.
- Consider splitting the order or using a price limit if you cannot accept the resulting average price.
- Review the expected fill and remaining exposure after each execution.
Liquidity is therefore an execution constraint, not a responsible-trading limit. A thin book can leave part of an order unfilled while the filled portion changes your exposure immediately.
Do not confuse a limit order with a loss limit
Kalshi’s limit-order documentation describes a limit order as an instruction that specifies the maximum price you are willing to pay. The order may remain unfilled if the market never reaches that price.
A limit order controls execution price for that order. It does not:
- restrict the total amount you can deposit;
- set a monthly account funding ceiling;
- stop trading after a cumulative loss;
- close an existing position when your account reaches a loss amount; or
- prevent you from submitting additional orders later.
Use a limit order when price certainty matters, and use Responsible Risk Management controls when the objective is to restrict funding or access. They solve different problems.

Separate money entering the account from money at risk
Start with two numbers: the maximum you are willing to deposit during a calendar month and the maximum amount you are willing to lose from trading. The first can be enforced, in part, with Kalshi’s personalized funding cap. The second is a personal rule unless your platform documents a matching automatic control.
Decide what happens after a warning sign
Write a specific action beside your loss rule. Examples include stopping for the rest of the day, activating a Trading Break, or requesting Voluntary Self-Exclusion. A written action is easier to follow than an instruction such as “trade less.” Remember that a Trading Break or Self-Exclusion can make open positions unsellable, so decide how you will handle positions before starting the restriction.
Use a calendar-month budget for a funding cap
Kalshi’s cap is calendar-month based. If your income or bills fall on different dates, map deposits to the platform’s calendar month rather than your personal pay cycle. Leave a buffer for a deposit that is authorized near month-end but processed later, and do not assume a withdrawal restores unused deposit capacity.

Review market liquidity before sizing an order
On an orderbook without a fixed trade-size ceiling, the visible depth determines how much can fill near the current price. A large nominal position can have a very different execution cost in a deep market than in a thin one. Treat the displayed depth and likely price impact as part of your risk limit.

Troubleshooting common problems
The funding-cap option is missing
- Confirm that you are in Responsible Risk Management, not the ordinary deposit or trading screen.
- Check whether your account, location or product is eligible for the setting shown.
- Review whether a previously selected responsibility action is still active; Kalshi says actions cannot be changed before expiration.
- If you are trying to use a wire, note that Kalshi says wire deposits are not currently accepted while a personalized funding cap is enabled.
I raised my cap, but the new amount is not available
Kalshi says an increase takes effect in the next calendar month. Until that period begins, the previous cap remains the operative limit. Do not repeatedly submit requests expecting an immediate change.
I cannot sell during a Trading Break or Self-Exclusion
That behavior is consistent with Kalshi’s stated restrictions. Trading Breaks and Self-Exclusion can prevent selling open positions. If you need to control an existing position, do so before the restriction starts. Otherwise, you may have to wait until the selected term expires.
My Polymarket order will not fill at the displayed price
Check the orderbook depth rather than assuming an account limit has blocked you. With no designed-in trading-size limit, an order can still fail to execute fully because there are not enough willing counterparties at your chosen price. A thinner book can also cause substantial price movement as the order consumes successive levels.

Do not treat a missing control as a hidden feature. The reviewed Kalshi pages do not document a separate user-set dollar loss limit, and the reviewed Polymarket help article does not describe one. Use the documented funding, pause and exclusion controls where available, maintain your own loss ledger, and stop placing orders when your precommitted amount is reached.
Safety checks before activating any restriction
- Record open positions, average entry prices and any pending orders.
- Decide whether each open position should be closed before the restriction begins.
- Read the exact duration and expiration date; responsibility actions cannot be lifted or changed early on Kalshi.
- Confirm whether the action affects only one account or a broader ecosystem.
- Save the confirmation screen or email so you know when access should return.
- Check your payment methods after enabling a funding cap, especially if you normally use wire deposits.
When platform controls are not enough
Funding caps, pauses and self-exclusion reduce access or new funding, but they do not guarantee that a position will not lose value. They also cannot undo a completed trade. If trading is causing financial distress or feels difficult to control, use the support and responsible-trading resources identified by the platform. Kalshi’s responsible-trading pages point users to Birches Health and the 988 Lifeline for additional help.
For an immediate safety concern in the United States, call or text 988. For account-specific questions, contact the platform through the support channel shown after you sign in and ask which controls and terms apply to your jurisdiction.
