A price alert only sends a notification; it does not sell anything. A stop-loss is an order instruction stored by a broker or exchange and can attempt to reduce or close a position. The distinction matters: TradingView describes price alerts as triggering when price “surpasses or reaches a specific price mark,” while Coinbase says its mobile alerts “do not place an order for that asset.” To automate an exit, you must submit an order at the venue holding the position, understand whether it is a stop-market or stop-limit order, and accept that fast markets can produce a partial fill or no fill.
This guide shows how to build both layers for crypto assets, listed companies with crypto exposure and exchange-traded funds. It also explains how to select levels from your own investment thesis instead of applying an unsupported universal percentage.

First, identify what you mean by “cryptocurrency stocks”
The phrase can refer to two different instruments, and the correct alert or stop workflow depends on which one you own:

- Listed securities with crypto exposure: shares of a company, an exchange-traded fund or another listed product whose value is affected by digital-asset markets. These trade through a securities broker and use that broker’s order rules, market hours and short-sale or extended-hours policies.
Before creating anything, write down the exact symbol, exchange or venue, quote currency, account and position size. A similarly named token, a different share class or the same ticker on another exchange can produce a valid-looking alert that is irrelevant to your holding.

Also confirm the market schedule. Some crypto venues quote continuously, while listed securities may have regular, pre-market or after-hours sessions with different liquidity and order handling. Your broker or exchange determines which sessions a stop order can monitor.
Alert versus stop-loss: what each one actually does
| Feature | Price alert | Stop-loss or protective exit order |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Notifies you that a condition has occurred so you can reassess or act. | Instructs the trading venue to submit an order when a trigger is reached. |
| Where it lives | An alerting service such as a charting app or exchange notification system. | The broker or exchange that holds or routes the position. |
| Does it sell automatically? | No. Coinbase explicitly states that mobile price alerts do not place an order. TradingView’s alert documentation describes notifications, not guaranteed execution. | It can attempt an exit, subject to order type, liquidity, venue rules and connectivity. |
| Price certainty | Not applicable; there is no trade. | A stop-limit specifies a worst acceptable limit price but may remain unfilled. A stop-market seeks execution but does not guarantee the eventual price. |
| Best use | Thesis review, research, multi-asset monitoring and reminders. | Predefined risk control when you cannot watch the market continuously. |
Use both when appropriate: an information alert can prompt a decision before your planned exit, while a venue-held stop provides a separate attempt to limit damage if the market moves quickly. Neither tool guarantees a particular outcome.
Set the levels before opening an alert or order
1. Define the thesis-invalidation level
Write the reason for owning the instrument in one sentence and identify the price or market event that would make that reason no longer valid. That is a decision level, not automatically the same as your entry price or a round-number percentage below it. For a listed company, the invalidation may depend on the share price and the company-specific thesis; for a crypto asset, it may depend on a support level, a protocol event or a portfolio allocation limit. The platform documentation does not establish a universal stop distance or a “correct” percentage.

2. Use at least two planned levels
- Information level: the point at which you review news, liquidity, the chart and your thesis.
- Exit level: the point at which the position should be reduced or closed if your predefined condition is met.
Keeping these levels separate prevents every notification from becoming an impulsive market order. Record the reason for each level before placing it.
3. Check currency, tick size and liquidity
A level of 40,000 in a USD-quoted market is not the same as 40,000 in another quote currency. Confirm the quote, the venue’s minimum price increment and the typical bid-ask spread. Thin order books can produce larger gaps between the trigger and the fill, especially during news or liquidation events.
4. Size the position to the risk you can tolerate
A simple planning relationship is:
position size = maximum acceptable loss ÷ (entry price − planned exit price)

For a long position, use the distance between entry and the planned exit; for a short position, use the equivalent adverse move. This is a planning calculation, not a promise of realized loss: fees, slippage, gaps and partial fills can change the result. Reduce the position if the calculated size would exceed the venue’s liquidity or your own risk budget.

TradingView can monitor charted symbols and, where supported, an entire watchlist. Its alert system supports a symbol or watchlist, a condition, a trigger frequency and an expiration. It can also evaluate data series, indicators, strategies and drawing objects.
- Open the exact instrument. Search for the ticker and select the correct exchange and quote currency. Verify that the chart represents the asset or listed security you actually hold.
- Open the alert dialog. Use the chart’s alert control and choose the instrument or a watchlist if you want one rule to monitor multiple symbols.
- Set the primary condition to Price. Choose an operator such as crossing, crossing up, crossing down, entering or another option shown for that symbol. Enter the information or exit level you documented.
- Choose the trigger frequency. Select how often the alert may fire, such as once, once per bar or every time the condition is met, according to the options available on your account and chart.
- Set an expiration. Give the rule an end date or time. An expiration prevents an old level from silently remaining active after your thesis, position or market context has changed.
- Select delivery channels. Enable the channels you will actually see, such as a push notification, an in-app message, email or another option displayed in the dialog. Confirm that operating-system notifications are permitted.
- Create and test the rule. Check the alert list for the symbol, condition, frequency, expiration and status. A notification confirms that the alert fired; it does not confirm that any order was sent.
Using watchlist and technical alerts
A watchlist alert is useful when the same condition applies to several assets, but review each symbol’s quote currency and liquidity before acting. For more advanced monitoring, TradingView supports alerts on indicators, strategies and drawing objects as well as on the raw data series.
Interval behavior differs by alert type. Data-series alerts are independent of the chart interval. Indicator, strategy and drawing alerts depend on the selected interval, so a rule created on a 15-minute chart can behave differently from one created on a daily chart. Keep the interval in your audit record.
If you change an indicator parameter after creating an alert, TradingView notes that the existing alert continues using the old settings. Edit or recreate the alert whenever you change a parameter, script or drawing that the rule depends on.
How to create a Coinbase mobile price notification
Coinbase’s mobile price alerts are informational. Availability of assets, crypto/fiat pairs and crypto/crypto pairs varies by region, so check the current market list and features for your jurisdiction before relying on the following path.
Rank #3
- Search for the asset. In the Coinbase mobile app, find and open the exact asset page.
- Add it to a watchlist. Use the watchlist control so the asset is available for monitoring.
- Open the alert control. Tap the bell or add-alert control shown on the asset page.
- Choose the direction. Select whether you want a notification when the price is above or below your target.
- Enter the target and save. Confirm the quote currency and the number before saving.
- Enable delivery. In notification settings, turn on push, in-app and/or email delivery as desired. Check the phone’s system notification permissions as well.
Coinbase states that these alerts “do not place an order for that asset.” If the notification arrives and you want to trade, you must open the trading screen and submit an order yourself, or maintain a separate executable order.
How to place a stop-loss rule on Coinbase Advanced Trade
On Coinbase Advanced Trade, the documented stop-limit workflow uses two prices: a stop price that activates the order and a limit price that controls the order posted after activation. Coinbase describes this as a stop-limit order that automatically places a limit order to buy or sell when the asset reaches the specified stop price.
- Select the market pair. Open the exact crypto/fiat or crypto/crypto pair and verify that it is available in your region and account.
- Choose Stop Limit. In the order ticket, select the stop-limit order type rather than a basic market or limit order.
- Enter the stop price. This is the trigger at which Coinbase submits the limit order.
- Enter the limit price. For a sell protection order, this is the lowest price at which you are willing to accept a fill. The relationship between stop and limit prices must comply with the ticket’s current validation rules.
- Enter quantity and review. Check side, quantity, pair, stop price, limit price, fees and any time-in-force option shown.
- Confirm and monitor. After submission, verify the order in open orders. When the stop is reached, the limit order is posted; it is not the same as a guaranteed immediate sale.
Bracket and TP/SL orders
Where the Advanced Trade interface offers bracket or take-profit/stop-loss (TP/SL) orders, you can attach profit and loss exits to a parent order. Read the current ticket carefully: the parent, profit target and protective leg can have separate statuses. A filled parent does not mean every exit has filled, and a canceled or partially filled leg changes the remaining exposure.
Why a stop-limit can fail to exit
If the market moves through your limit price before sufficient buyers or sellers appear, the order can remain open or fill only partially. Coinbase warns that TP/SL downside protection may not execute during high volatility. A stop-limit therefore trades execution certainty for price control. Review open orders after a sharp move rather than assuming that reaching the stop means you are out.
Choosing between stop-market and stop-limit
The exact names and availability depend on the venue, but the trade-off is consistent:
| Choice | What happens after the trigger | Main benefit | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | The venue submits a market order. | Higher likelihood of execution when a liquid market is functioning. | The fill price can be materially worse than the trigger during a gap, spread expansion or fast move. |
| Stop-limit | The venue submits a limit order at your specified limit. | Price is bounded by the limit if it fills. | The order may not fill at all when price moves beyond the limit or liquidity disappears. |
Do not choose a stop-limit merely because its displayed price looks reassuring. Decide whether your priority in an emergency is a higher probability of reducing exposure or a strict minimum acceptable price, then verify that your venue supports the corresponding order type and session.

A practical framework for setting a stop without a magic percentage
Start with the thesis, not the entry price
Place the exit where the original reason for the trade is invalidated. A stop that is closer than normal market noise may trigger while the thesis remains intact; one that is far away may create a loss larger than your risk budget. The cited platform documentation explains mechanics, not a validated stop-loss percentage, win rate or slippage estimate.

Review the instrument’s recent range, spread and order-book depth. A volatile token or a thinly traded listed security may need more room than a highly liquid instrument, but the answer is not to widen the stop indefinitely. If the required distance makes the position too risky, reduce the position size or do not take the trade.
Separate alert levels from execution levels
Set an alert above the stop when you want time to investigate. Set the executable stop at the level where you have already decided that exposure should be reduced. This prevents a notification from becoming an unplanned debate while price is moving quickly.
Document the rule
Record the instrument, entry, thesis, information level, exit level, order type, stop and limit prices, quantity, alert frequency, expiration, notification channel and venue. Include the chart interval and indicator parameters for technical alerts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using alerts and stops for listed crypto-exposed companies or funds
A charting alert can monitor a listed security just as it can monitor a crypto asset, but the executable rule belongs at the securities broker. Confirm whether the broker accepts stop-market, stop-limit, trailing or bracket orders for that security and whether those orders operate during regular hours, extended hours or both. Some brokers use different trigger sources for consolidated trades, quotes or the primary listing exchange.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not copy a crypto exchange’s stop settings into a stock order ticket. Share prices use different tick sizes, trading halts, opening auctions and overnight gaps. A stop-limit that is reasonable for a continuously quoted crypto pair may be unsuitable for a security that can reopen at a substantially different price after a halt or market close.

Maintenance: audit every rule after a change
- After changing symbols: confirm the exchange, quote currency and position match the alert or order.
- After changing chart intervals: review indicator, strategy and drawing alerts, because those alert types depend on the selected interval.
- After changing indicator parameters: edit or recreate the alert; an existing TradingView alert retains the old settings.
- After changing accounts or devices: verify that notifications are enabled and that the order remains at the venue holding the position.
- After a sharp move: inspect open orders, partial fills, cancellations and remaining quantity. Do not assume that a notification equals execution.
- At expiration: remove obsolete alerts and replace stops only after reassessing the thesis and current liquidity.
Common failure modes and fixes
“I received an alert, but nothing sold.”
That is normal for a notification. Open the venue’s order ticket and submit an order, or maintain an executable stop separately. Coinbase mobile alerts are explicitly informational.
“My stop triggered, but the order is still open.”
Check whether it was a stop-limit. The trigger may have posted a limit order that the market did not reach. Review the limit price, remaining quantity and order status before deciding what to do next.
“The alert fired at a surprising time.”
Check the selected symbol, exchange, quote currency, chart interval, trigger frequency and time zone. For indicator, strategy and drawing alerts, verify that the interval and parameters are still the ones you intended.

“The pair or order type is missing.”
Market coverage and order types vary by region, account and product version. Coinbase’s available crypto/fiat and crypto/crypto markets are region dependent. Consult the current venue documentation and confirm eligibility in your account rather than substituting a different pair.
“The stop was not reached, but the loss is larger than planned.”
Trigger prices are not guaranteed fill prices. Gaps, spread widening, thin liquidity, fees and partial fills can increase the realized loss. Reassess position size and order type; do not respond by moving the stop farther away without recalculating the risk.
TradingView and Coinbase: which workflow fits?
| Decision point | TradingView alerts | Coinbase mobile plus Advanced Trade |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Cross-asset chart and watchlist monitoring, including technical conditions. | Exchange notifications combined with executable crypto order types. |
| Does the basic alert place an order? | No alert-only execution is described in the alert documentation; execution must be connected or handled at a venue. | No. Coinbase says mobile price alerts do not place an order. |
| Technical conditions | Price, indicators, strategies and drawings are supported, with interval dependence varying by alert type. | The mobile price alert workflow described here uses an above-or-below price target. |
| Stop execution | Depends on the connected broker or exchange; an alert itself does not guarantee a fill. | Stop-limit, bracket and TP/SL order types are documented for Advanced Trade, but volatility can impair execution. |
| Coverage | Charted stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies and other symbols subject to the account’s data and plan limits. | Crypto markets and pairs vary by region and current product availability. |
| Best fit | Planning levels and monitoring many instruments from one interface. | Keeping crypto notification and order placement within one exchange workflow. |
Minimum pre-trade checklist
- Is this a crypto asset, listed company or fund, and is the symbol correct?
- Which venue will actually hold or route the position?
- What is the quote currency, market session and minimum price increment?
- What is the information level and what is the thesis-invalidation exit level?
- Does the chosen order type prioritize execution probability or price control?
- Is the position small enough for the planned adverse move, fees and slippage?
- Does the alert have the intended frequency, interval, parameters, delivery channel and expiration?
- After submission, did you verify the alert status and open-order status separately?
The safest mental model is to treat an alert as a sensor and a stop order as a conditional instruction. Build the sensor wherever it gives you the clearest monitoring, but place the instruction at the venue that can execute it, then audit both whenever your symbol, strategy, account or market conditions change.
