Turn on card alerts from your issuer’s official app or website, then choose a purchase threshold and a payment-due reminder. Add payment-posted and low-available-credit notices if your account offers them. Select a channel you will actually see—text, email, or push—save the settings, and confirm they remain enabled. Treat every alert as a prompt to check your account, not as proof that a payment arrived on time.
What credit card alerts can do
Credit card alerts are notifications generated by your card issuer when a selected account event occurs. Depending on the issuer and your account, events can include a purchase above an amount you choose, any purchase, a payment due date, a payment posting to the account, or available credit falling below a threshold. Delivery may be by email, text message, push notification, or a combination of those channels.

Alert names, menu locations, available thresholds, delivery methods, and eligibility differ by issuer and card. The reliable starting point is your issuer’s official website or mobile app. Look for Profile, Settings, Alerts, Notifications, or a similarly named menu.

An alert does not change your due date, waive a fee, guarantee that a transaction is legitimate, or prove that a payment was received. It is one part of a monitoring routine. You still need to read the statement, confirm the due date and time zone, keep funds available for any scheduled debit, and check the payment status in the account.

Know the dates you are trying to manage
Have your latest statement available. Identify the payment due date, the minimum payment, the statement balance, and the account’s current balance. A payment-due alert is useful only when you know which date it refers to and how much you intend to pay.
Check your contact details
Review the email address and mobile number saved in your issuer profile. If you plan to use push notifications, make sure the issuer’s app is installed, you are signed in, and notifications are allowed in your phone’s operating-system settings. A correct alert setting cannot reach an outdated address or a device that blocks notifications.
Decide what behavior the alert should trigger
For each alert, write down the action you will take. For example, a purchase-threshold alert might trigger a transaction review; a payment-due reminder might trigger a payment you schedule several days early; a payment-posted alert might trigger a quick check that the amount and account are correct. This prevents a stream of notifications from becoming background noise.

- Sign in through the official issuer app or website. Avoid links in unexpected messages. Open the app directly or type the issuer’s known web address yourself.
- Open the account-management area. Check Profile, Settings, Alerts, or Notifications. Some issuers put alerts inside the individual credit-card account rather than in general profile settings.
- Choose purchase alerts. Select an alert for every purchase if you need maximum visibility, or choose a purchase amount threshold that will highlight transactions worth reviewing. If the issuer offers separate card, online, international, or recurring-transaction controls, select only the categories you can act on.
- Choose a payment-due alert. Enable a reminder for the upcoming due date. If the issuer lets you choose timing, select a lead time that leaves room to review the statement, move money, and allow processing.
- Add a payment-posted alert when available. This can help you confirm that a payment entered the account. It is a confirmation aid, not a substitute for checking whether the payment amount and funding account were correct.
- Add an available-credit alert when available. A low-available-credit notice can reveal a large purchase, a temporary authorization, or a balance that is approaching your own limit. Wells Fargo describes alerts for available credit below a chosen amount for eligible cardholders.
- Select delivery channels. Choose email, text message, push notification, or the combination your issuer offers. Use a channel you routinely notice and can access while traveling or when your phone is offline.
- Save the changes. Some interfaces require a separate Save, Confirm, or Apply action for each alert.
- Reopen the alert page. Confirm that the event, threshold, timing, and delivery channel are shown as enabled. Do not assume that leaving the page automatically saved every selection.
Alert interfaces can change. If you cannot find the controls, use the issuer’s in-app help or secure-message function, or call the number on the back of the card. Do not share a one-time passcode with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Issuer examples: where the controls may be
These paths illustrate how menus can differ; they are not universal instructions and may vary by account or app version.
| Issuer example | App path | Website path | Documented alert details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chase | Tap the person icon, then Alerts & messages and Manage alerts. | Open the person icon, then Profile & settings and Alerts. | Chase lists email, text message, and push notifications for supported alerts and describes purchase and payment alert examples. |
| Wells Fargo | Use the card account’s alert controls in the official online account or app. | Use the card account’s alert controls in the official online account or website. | Eligible cardholders can receive email, text, or push notifications for purchases above a chosen amount, available credit below a chosen amount, payment due, and payment posted. |
An issuer may show more or fewer choices than these examples. The absence of a control in your account can reflect card eligibility, account type, regional availability, or a current interface design rather than a setup mistake.

Which spending alerts to choose
Purchase notifications for every transaction
An every-purchase notice gives the fastest signal that a transaction has occurred. It is useful when you are actively monitoring a new card, sharing an account with an authorized user, traveling, or trying to detect unauthorized use quickly. The trade-off is volume: recurring subscriptions, holds, refunds, and small everyday purchases can create many messages.
A purchase-amount threshold
A threshold alert notifies you when a purchase exceeds an amount you set. Choose a figure that is meaningful for your normal spending rather than copying a generic number. If ordinary purchases are usually below $40, a threshold of $50 may highlight unusual charges; if your normal purchases are much larger, that threshold would create little information. Review the issuer’s wording to determine whether the threshold applies to a single transaction, a posted purchase, or another event.
Low available credit
A low-available-credit alert can warn that your remaining credit is approaching a limit you want to preserve. Available credit can change because of posted balances and temporary authorizations, so investigate the account before assuming that every change is a finalized purchase. This alert is especially useful if a low remaining limit could cause a declined transaction or interfere with a planned expense.
Alerts for additional users and recurring charges
If your issuer provides separate controls, consider whether alerts should apply to authorized-user purchases or recurring payments. Make the rule fit your review process: a household account may need an alert for every purchase, while a personal account may need only a high-value threshold and payment reminders.
How to set a useful payment-reminder system
Start with a due-date reminder
Enable the issuer’s payment-due alert and choose the earliest practical reminder offered. When it arrives, open the statement or account page and verify the amount you plan to pay. A reminder is more reliable when it leads to a scheduled action rather than a promise to remember later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAdd a payment-posted notice
If offered, enable a payment-posted alert. After you make a payment, check that the posted amount matches your instruction and that the account no longer shows the expected payment as pending. A posted notice can reveal a rejected, reversed, or incorrectly entered payment, but you should still inspect the account directly.

Use a second calendar reminder when the stakes are high
An issuer alert can be delayed, filtered, or missed. For a card whose late payment would be costly, create a separate calendar reminder based on the statement due date. Keep the calendar reminder independent of the alert channel so one technical problem does not remove both prompts.
When a payment is considered on time
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that a credit-card payment generally must be received by 5 p.m. on the due date, using the time zone stated on the billing statement, to be considered on time. If the due date falls on a Sunday or a holiday on which the issuer does not accept or process payments, the described rule generally moves the deadline to the next business day. Issuers may also set a reasonable cutoff for online payments.
That rule does not mean that any payment submitted at any time on the due date is guaranteed to count as timely. Mail and some online bill-pay services can require processing time. The CFPB recommends sending payments early. Check the statement and the issuer’s payment disclosures for the applicable cutoff, posting behavior, and accepted payment methods.

- The due date and the time zone printed on the billing statement.
- The amount and payment method you intend to use.
- The date by which the issuer will receive and credit that payment.
Autopay: useful backup, not a set-and-forget solution
The CFPB says, “Automatic payments can be a convenient way to make sure you pay your bills on time.” Autopay can reduce the chance that you overlook a due date, but it does not eliminate account-monitoring duties.
With automatic payments, you authorize recurring electronic withdrawals from a linked bank account. If that account lacks enough money when the debit occurs, the bank or the company receiving the payment may charge overdraft or nonsufficient-funds fees. Track the linked account’s balance, upcoming withdrawals, and the authorization terms. A payment-due alert remains useful even when autopay is enabled because it gives you time to confirm that funds are available and that the authorized amount is appropriate.

Check the settings, not just the first message
Return to the alert-management page after saving. Confirm that each desired alert is enabled, the threshold is correct, and the destination details are current. If an alert is available only for eligible accounts, the page may show fewer choices than the issuer’s general help article.
Check device and message settings
- Confirm that the issuer’s app can send notifications on your phone.
- Check whether your email service is filtering issuer messages into spam or promotions.
- Make sure text-message blocking, short-code blocking, or a changed phone number is not preventing delivery.
- Keep the issuer’s app updated enough to support its current notification controls.
Use the account as the source of truth
If an alert conflicts with the account page or statement, investigate in the signed-in account and contact the issuer through a trusted channel. Notifications can arrive late, be suppressed by a device, or describe an authorization that later changes. Do not treat a missing message as evidence that no purchase or payment occurred.
Common problems and fixes
“I cannot find the alert menu.”
Open the individual card account, not only the general profile. Search the issuer’s help center for “alerts” or “notifications,” then compare the instructions with the labels visible after you sign in. Menu paths can differ between the app and website.
“My threshold alert is too noisy.”
Raise the threshold, switch from every-purchase messages to high-value purchases, or disable categories that do not require immediate review. Keep a payment-due reminder even if you reduce spending alerts; the two alerts serve different purposes.
“I received a purchase alert I do not recognize.”
Open the transaction in the issuer account and distinguish a temporary authorization, subscription renewal, authorized-user purchase, or refund adjustment from a genuinely unauthorized charge. If it remains unrecognized, use the issuer’s official dispute or fraud-reporting process promptly. Do not use a link in the alert message to investigate.

“The payment alert says posted, but the balance looks wrong.”
Review the payment amount, posting date, pending transactions, credits, and any returned-payment notice. A posted payment may reduce the balance while other transactions or interest continue to appear. Contact the issuer if the account does not reflect the payment you authorized.
“I paid on the due date and still worry it was late.”
Check when the issuer received the payment, the statement’s time zone, the online-payment cutoff, and whether the due date fell on a qualifying nonbusiness day. Keep confirmation details from the payment service. If the payment was rejected or returned, resolve it with the issuer rather than relying on the original submission time.
A practical alert setup by priority
If your issuer offers many choices, set them in this order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Payment due: the essential reminder for the account’s disclosed due date.
- Purchase threshold or every purchase: choose the level that produces a useful review signal.
- Payment posted: confirmation that the issuer recorded the payment.
- Low available credit: an early warning when remaining credit reaches your chosen floor.
Then select the delivery channel you are most likely to notice, verify the contact details, save the settings, and review the account regularly. The best configuration is the one that prompts a specific action without creating so many messages that you ignore them.
Monthly review checklist
- Read the new statement and note the due date, amount due, and stated time zone.
- Confirm that payment-due and spending alerts are still enabled.
- Review recent purchases, pending authorizations, refunds, and authorized-user activity.
- Check the linked bank-account balance if autopay is active.
- Verify that a recent payment posted for the expected amount.
- Adjust a purchase threshold if your normal spending pattern has changed.
- Update your email address, mobile number, or push-notification permissions when needed.
What alerts cannot replace
Alerts do not replace reading statements, reconciling transactions, protecting login credentials, or understanding the payment authorization you accepted. The CFPB examination manual says card issuers must use reasonable procedures to ensure periodic statements are mailed or delivered at least 21 days before the disclosed due date. That delivery requirement is useful background, but it does not justify ignoring the due date or assuming a late-arriving statement changes it.
Use alerts as an early-warning and follow-up system: notice the event, open the account through a trusted route, verify the underlying transaction or payment, and take the required action before the issuer’s deadline.
