A Bitcoin alert does not buy or sell anything: Coinbase states that “Price alerts are only notifications that an asset has reached a certain price. They do not place an order for that asset.” For inflation, FRED can notify you when a monitored series receives a new observation, while the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) can remind you of scheduled CPI releases.
Choose the alert that matches what you want to know
“Inflation alert” can mean two different events. You may want a reminder that the CPI news release is due at a particular time, or you may want an email when a specific inflation series in FRED is updated. Those are not interchangeable: a calendar reminder tells you when publication is scheduled; a FRED notification is tied to new data in the series you selected.

| Use case | Trigger | Typical delivery | Best starting point | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin price threshold | BTC moves above or below a price you enter | Push, in-app, and/or email, depending on account settings | Coinbase mobile price alert | Notification only; it does not submit an order |
| Inflation series update | FRED receives a new observation for a chosen series | Email notification | FRED account and series notification | It follows the series’ publication pattern, not a custom market-price threshold |
| CPI release reminder | A scheduled BLS release date and time | Calendar event, with optional BLS email subscriptions | BLS release calendar and ICS subscription | Release dates can be revised |
| Custom Bitcoin workflow | Your script compares a fetched BTC price with your own condition | Whatever channel you implement | CoinMarketCap’s keyless public API | You must handle polling, errors, limits, and message delivery |
Set a Bitcoin price alert in the Coinbase mobile app
The mobile workflow is designed for a simple “tell me when BTC reaches this level” request. Before saving, decide which market and quote currency matter to you. A threshold expressed in BTC/USD is not the same as one expressed in BTC/USDT, and an alert attached to the wrong market can produce a notification that does not match the price you are watching.
Recommended Free Tools
Step-by-step setup
- Open the Coinbase mobile app and search for Bitcoin (BTC).
- Add BTC to your watchlist. The watchlist step makes the asset available for the alert workflow.
- Tap the bell with a plus sign, then choose Add Alert.
- Select whether the alert should trigger when the price is above or below your target. Enter the target price and save.
- Open Account & Settings → Notification Settings. Turn on Price Alerts or Custom Alerts, then choose the channels you want: push, in-app, and/or email.
- Review the alert’s asset, market or pair, quote currency, direction, target, and any frequency option shown in the current app. Confirm that it is attached to the intended BTC context before relying on it.
What the alert does—and does not do
The trigger is informational. It does not place a market order, limit order, or any other trade. Treat the message as a prompt to open the market and decide what to do yourself. A notification can arrive after the price has moved again, and the displayed price may differ from the execution price you would receive if you later choose to trade.

Settings that commonly cause a “wrong” alert
- Wrong quote currency: BTC/USD and BTC/USDT can show different values and market conditions. Recheck the pair after changing views.
- Wrong direction: an “above” condition will not behave like a “below” condition, even if the target number is correct.
- Wrong asset: confirm that the alert is for Bitcoin (BTC), not another asset with a similar name or symbol.
- Disabled delivery: the alert can exist while push, in-app, or email delivery is disabled in Notification Settings.
- Device permissions: your phone’s operating-system notification permission can override an app-level setting. If push messages are absent, check both places.
- App changes: menu labels, supported assets, channels, and regional availability can change. After an app update, open the alert and notification settings again rather than assuming the previous configuration is unchanged.
Get an email when an inflation series changes in FRED
FRED notifications are appropriate when you care about a particular data series receiving a new observation. Create a free FRED account, select the series, and subscribe from the series page. This is different from asking for a reminder at a fixed clock time: the email follows the data release for that series.
Step-by-step setup
- Create or sign in to a free FRED account.
- Open the inflation series you want to monitor, such as a CPI series. Select the exact series rather than relying on a broad search term; different series can have different frequencies, geographies, or definitions.
- Under Account Tools, choose Get email notification.
- Open My Account and go to Notifications to manage or delete the alert.
Pick the series deliberately
“CPI” is a family of measures, not one universal number. Before subscribing, read the series title and description so you know which population, geography, frequency, and measure you are following. A notification means that FRED has received new data for that specific series; it does not promise that the number increased, decreased, or met a personal inflation threshold.

Receive reminders for scheduled CPI releases from the BLS
If your priority is knowing when the U.S. CPI news release is scheduled, use the BLS release calendar. You can subscribe to the official ICS calendar at https://www.bls.gov/schedule/news_release/bls.ics from a calendar application that supports subscriptions. The calendar is a schedule, so check the BLS page for revisions.
Add the BLS ICS calendar
- Copy the exact ICS address:
https://www.bls.gov/schedule/news_release/bls.ics. - In your calendar application, choose the option to add a calendar by URL or subscribe to an internet calendar. The wording varies by application.
- Paste the address and save the subscription.
- Set your calendar’s reminder time and time zone. The calendar event is only useful if it appears at the time you can act on it.
- Periodically refresh or reopen the subscription if a date looks inconsistent; BLS release dates can be revised.
Use BLS email subscriptions as a second channel
BLS also offers email alerts for news releases and other publications through its subscriptions page. The CPI contacts information confirms that subscribers can receive BLS news releases and notifications by email. Email is useful when you want a message in addition to a calendar event, but it is still a publication notification, not a forecast of the CPI result.

Example of a dated release
The BLS 2026 release calendar schedules the October 2026 CPI release for November 10, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Use that as a calendar example, not as a permanent annual rule: future calendars and even published dates can change.
Build a custom Bitcoin threshold alert with CoinMarketCap’s public API
A custom script is useful when a platform’s built-in conditions or delivery channels do not fit your workflow. CoinMarketCap documents a keyless public endpoint at /public-api/v2/simple/price and gives a BTC/ETH example. The service describes coverage spanning 16 years of historical data, more than 50 million tracked assets, and more than 941 exchanges; those are CoinMarketCap’s current API-overview figures, not a guarantee that every asset or exchange is available in every response.

Basic workflow
- Choose the asset (BTC), quote currency, threshold, and direction.
- Have your program request the current BTC price from the documented endpoint at a sensible interval.
- Parse the response and compare the returned value with your threshold.
- When the condition changes from false to true, send one notification through your chosen email, push, or messaging service.
- Record that the alert was sent, or require the price to move back across the threshold before another notification, so repeated polling does not produce a message every cycle.
Operational safeguards
- Rate limiting: follow the endpoint’s current limits and use a polling interval that does not create unnecessary traffic.
- Error handling: distinguish a missing, stale, malformed, or failed response from a genuine price. Do not alert on an unvalidated value.
- Currency consistency: compare the same quote currency you intend to act on; do not mix a USD threshold with a differently denominated response.
- Clock and uptime: run the checker on a device or service that remains available, and log the time of each successful check.
- Notification failures: treat email or messaging delivery as a separate failure point and keep a local log so you can see whether the trigger or the delivery failed.
- Version changes: API behavior is versioned. Recheck the current documentation before changing endpoint paths, parameters, or response handling.
This approach is software automation, not an order system. It still only tells you that your condition was observed; any trade or portfolio action remains a separate decision.
Make alerts dependable enough to use
Verify the trigger
- Write the condition in plain language: “notify me when BTC is below [target] in [quote currency].”
- Check the selected asset, pair, direction, target, and frequency in the alert record.
- For inflation, record the exact FRED series name and whether you want a new-observation email or a BLS release-time reminder.
Verify the delivery path
- For a mobile alert, enable the relevant channel in the app and allow notifications in the phone’s operating system.
- For email, confirm that the account address is current and watch for filtering into spam or promotions.
- For a calendar subscription, confirm that the ICS calendar is visible and that reminders are enabled for its events.
- For custom code, test both the threshold logic and the notification provider independently.
Use a test condition where possible
If the service allows you to create a harmless condition near the current value, use it to confirm that the notification route works, then replace it with your actual target. Do not assume that seeing an alert listed in an account proves that push permission, email delivery, or calendar synchronization is functioning.

Which method should you use?
| If you need… | Choose… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A quick BTC-above-or-below notification | Coinbase mobile alert | Fast setup with push, in-app, and email choices |
| An email when a selected inflation series updates | FRED series notification | It follows new observations for the series you specify |
| A reminder before or at a CPI publication | BLS ICS calendar, optionally combined with BLS email subscriptions | It is tied to the official release schedule |
| Multiple conditions or a nonstandard notification channel | CoinMarketCap API plus your own script | You control the comparison and routing, but also maintain the software |
For many readers, the practical combination is one Bitcoin threshold alert, a FRED notification for the exact inflation series they follow, and the BLS calendar for release timing. Keep the three triggers separate in your notes so a scheduled release reminder is not mistaken for a new-data alert, and neither is mistaken for an automatic trade.
