There is no universal menu for this setting. First determine whether you have a securities margin account or a leveraged CFD/forex account. Then look in your broker’s account or trading settings for a control labeled borrowing limit, margin, maximum leverage, buying power, or disable margin. If the control is absent, ask the broker what limit applies, when a change takes effect, and whether it affects existing positions.
A limit you select cannot override legal requirements, the broker’s house rules, or higher requirements for particular securities. Read the margin agreement, keep cash outside the account for emergencies, and understand that a broker can liquidate securities to repay a margin loan.

The same word—“leverage”—can describe different products. The correct setting depends on the account type, your country, and the instruments you trade.

U.S.-style securities margin accounts
A securities margin account lets you borrow from the brokerage against eligible securities. The relevant controls may be a borrowing cap, a restriction that sets security margin requirements to 100%, a cash-only conversion, or a setting that disables margin investing. Buying power can still be lower than your chosen cap because of account equity, concentration, volatile securities, options, or the broker’s current house requirements.

CFD and forex accounts
CFD and forex platforms generally expose a maximum-leverage preference, often in an account-settings or trading-conditions menu. Leverage can vary by instrument, account equity, jurisdiction, and current margin requirements. A selected maximum is not a promise that every position will receive that ratio.
Why jurisdiction matters
Regulators impose different floors and protections. A control available to a Canadian customer, a U.K. retail CFD customer, and a U.S. securities customer may have different names and legal effects. Do not copy a setting path from another country or from a different legal entity of the same broker.
| Account or product | Likely control | Question to resolve before saving |
|---|---|---|
| Securities margin | Borrowing cap, disable margin, 100% security margin, cash or restricted account | Does it cap new borrowing only, or will it require action on existing loans and positions? |
| CFD or forex | Maximum leverage or leverage adjustment | Is the value an account maximum, an instrument maximum, or only a preference subject to current requirements? |
| Day-trading account | Intraday margin or buying-power setting | Which current regulatory and firm requirements apply during the transition period? |
Prepare before changing the limit
Write down the account’s legal entity, country of residence, base currency, account type, open positions, current loan balance, available buying power, and the instruments you intend to trade. Take a screenshot of the current values so you can tell whether the change actually took effect.

Read the agreement and current requirements
The margin agreement incorporates applicable regulator, exchange, and firm requirements. It is not a promise that your broker will preserve today’s buying power. FINRA tells investors to understand their firm’s policies because firms can change them, particularly in volatile markets. Identify the broker’s maintenance-margin, concentration, options, and liquidation policies before selecting a limit.
Keep a reserve outside the trading account
Do not commit every available dollar to margin. FINRA’s margin guidance recommends keeping accessible cash and not using all available funds. A reserve can cover a variation in margin requirements, a transfer delay, or an unexpected loss without forcing a sale at an unfavorable time.

Separate a limit from a stop-loss
A borrowing or leverage limit controls the amount of financing the account may use. It does not cap the market loss on an open position, guarantee a liquidation price, or prevent a gap through a stop order. You still need position sizing and an exit plan.
How to set the limit in a typical broker interface
Labels and menu locations differ, but the following sequence works across most web and mobile platforms.
- Sign in to the correct account. If you have several portfolios, verify the account number, legal entity, and currency before opening settings. A limit on a cash account will not change a separate margin account.
- Open account or trading settings. Look under Account, Profile, Trading, Margin, Buying power, Risk, or Leverage. Search the broker’s help center for “borrowing limit,” “disable margin investing,” or “adjust leverage” if the menu is not visible.
- Choose the matching control. A securities account may offer a dollar borrowing cap, a switch to disable margin, or a 100% margin requirement. A CFD or forex account may offer an adjustable maximum leverage ratio. Do not select a leverage control when you are trying to reduce a securities loan; they are different mechanisms.
- Enter a conservative value. For a borrowing cap, enter the maximum loan balance you are willing to tolerate, not the account’s maximum advertised buying power. For maximum leverage, select the lowest ratio that supports your planned position size. Setting the value to zero may be unavailable; the broker may instead require disabling margin or converting the account.
- Read the confirmation screen. Check whether the setting applies account-wide or only to a product, whether it affects new trades or open positions, and whether pending orders are canceled. If the screen does not say, stop and ask support rather than assuming.
- Submit any verification. The broker may require an electronic acknowledgment, risk disclosure, two-factor authentication, or a new account agreement. Save the confirmation number and the displayed effective time.
- Verify the result. Reopen the settings page and check available margin, buying power, and loan balance. A maximum-leverage preference may leave actual leverage lower; a borrowing cap may not eliminate an existing loan until it is repaid.
- Monitor after the change. Review the account on the next trading day and after a deposit, withdrawal, corporate action, or large price movement. Ask support to explain any difference between the selected limit and the live figures.
Understand what each type of control actually does
| Control | What it is designed to limit | Important uncertainty to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Hard borrowing cap | The dollar amount the broker will allow you to borrow | Whether existing borrowing must be repaid immediately and whether unsettled trades count |
| Maximum leverage | The highest financing ratio the platform will attempt to make available | Whether equity, instrument rules, or changing requirements reduce the ratio in practice |
| Disable margin | Future use of margin financing in the account | Whether open margin positions are closed, transferred, or simply made subject to repayment |
| 100% security margin | Removes available leverage for securities covered by the setting | Which account and products are eligible and whether the setting is reversible online |
| Cash or restricted account conversion | Changes the account’s operating rules and borrowing ability | Whether options, short selling, instant settlement, or other features are lost |
The last three questions—account-wide versus instrument-level scope, treatment of open positions, and reversal time—are broker-specific. Obtain a written answer before relying on the setting.
Broker-specific examples (and their limits)
Robinhood UK: borrowing limit or disablement
The Robinhood UK support documentation describes a Margin Investing settings area where a customer can disable margin investing and set a borrowing limit equal to or below available margin. This example applies to that U.K. help page and should not be generalized to other Robinhood entities, countries, or account types. Confirm how a selected cap interacts with an existing loan and open positions.
Exness: adjusting maximum leverage
Exness places an Adjust leverage flow in Personal Area account settings. Its help material says available choices depend on equity and current requirements. If a customer selects a leverage setting higher than what is available at that moment, the actual leverage applied to positions will be lower than the selected maximum. This is a leveraged-trading example, not a procedure for a U.S. securities margin account.

Fidelity: 100% security margin
Fidelity’s margin FAQ describes an option that sets security margin requirements at 100%, eliminating available leverage for the affected account or eligible products. Eligibility and the exact setting can depend on the account and product. Ask whether the change applies to existing positions and whether it blocks all future borrowing.

Wealthsimple’s Canadian support material describes a restricted margin account with a $1,000 borrowing limit. It also notes limitations on converting account types. Treat this as a Canadian product example: confirm what features disappear, whether conversion is one-way, and how an outstanding balance is handled before switching.
Why your actual leverage can be lower than the number you selected
A maximum is an upper boundary, not an entitlement. Brokers can reduce effective leverage when your equity falls, a position becomes more volatile, an instrument has a higher requirement, or the firm changes its house rules. A platform may also calculate leverage separately for each position rather than across the whole account.
For example, an account setting might allow a high maximum while a particular currency pair, stock, index, or commodity receives a lower requirement. The platform can then apply less leverage without changing your saved preference. This is why the live “used margin,” “available margin,” and “maintenance requirement” figures matter more than the headline maximum.
Existing positions, pending orders, and effective time
The available documentation does not establish one universal effective time or treatment for open positions. Before submitting a change, ask the broker these specific questions:

- Does the limit apply immediately, after approval, at the next trading session, or after a settlement cycle?
- Does it affect positions opened before the change?
- Must an existing margin loan be reduced first?
- Are pending orders rejected, canceled, or left unchanged?
- Will the broker close, transfer, or re-margin positions that exceed the new limit?
- Can the setting be reversed, and is there a waiting period?
Until the broker confirms the answers, assume the old requirements remain in force and do not open a position that depends on the new limit.

U.S. securities margin
The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Understanding Margin Accounts warns: “Your brokerage firm may sell some or all of your securities without consulting you to pay off the loan it made to you.” A personal cap does not remove that contractual right or prevent a sale when the account falls below a requirement.
FINRA’s investor guidance says customers who do not fully understand margin should limit investments to a cash account where securities must be paid for in full. That is a risk-management choice, not a guarantee that a cash account is suitable for every investor.
U.K. retail CFD protections
For covered restricted speculative investments, FCA Handbook rule COBS 22.5.11 specifies minimum opening margins by asset category: 3.33% for major currency pairs or relevant sovereign debt, 5% for major stock indices, minor currency pairs, or gold, and 10% for minor stock indices or other commodities. The same covered retail framework requires net equity not to fall below 50% of the margin requirement.
These percentages have defined product and client scope. They are not universal global leverage settings and do not automatically apply to professional clients, uncovered products, or accounts outside the rule’s jurisdiction.

U.S. intraday margin transition
Investor.gov reports new FINRA intraday margin requirements effective June 4, 2026, with a transition period ending October 20, 2027. The Investor.gov page is dated January 8, 2021 but includes the current note about those future requirements. Because implementation can depend on the firm and account, ask your broker which standard currently applies rather than relying on an older day-trading label.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
The setting is missing
Check that you are in the correct legal entity and account type, then search the broker’s help center for the exact phrases “borrowing limit,” “disable margin investing,” “restricted margin,” or “adjust leverage.” Some customers must contact support or complete a suitability review. Ask for the available alternatives in writing.
The platform rejects your chosen value
The value may be below an existing loan, outside an allowed increment, or incompatible with current positions. Request the minimum permitted value and the amount you must repay or transfer before the change can be accepted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteActual leverage remains lower
Review instrument-specific requirements, account equity, and current margin used. In a leveraged account, a lower applied ratio can be normal even when the maximum setting is unchanged.
Buying power did not fall after disabling margin
Refresh the account, allow for settlement, and check for open loans or unsettled transactions. Ask whether the switch blocks new borrowing only. Do not assume that a disabled toggle has repaid an existing balance.
You received a margin call after lowering the cap
A lower cap can expose an existing position or loan to a new deficiency. Contact the broker immediately, identify the deadline, and ask what deposit, repayment, or position reduction will restore compliance. Do not wait for an automatic liquidation notice.
Quick Recap
A practical decision framework
- Want no borrowing at all? Ask whether disabling margin, setting security requirements to 100%, or converting to a cash account is the broker’s correct method. Compare the features you would lose.
- Want a fixed dollar ceiling? Choose a hard borrowing cap if the broker offers one. Set it below your personal maximum so changing requirements do not consume your entire risk budget.
- Trade CFDs or forex? Use the maximum-leverage control, then check each instrument’s applied margin before placing an order.
- Need to preserve existing positions? Obtain written confirmation about grandfathering, repayment, and pending orders before changing anything.
- Trade during a regulatory transition? Ask which requirements apply today, when the firm will migrate the account, and whether your buying power will be recalculated.
