There are two separate choices: the UPI app used in a particular payment flow, and the bank account marked as primary inside that app. A universal setting that forces one UPI app for every merchant, website, and phone is not established by official guidance. You can, however, set a primary account in Google Pay and choose an available UPI app when a payment screen presents options.
What “default UPI app” actually means
People usually mean one of two things when they ask for a default UPI app:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- App choice: selecting an app such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or another supported UPI app from the payment options shown by a merchant, website, QR scanner, or Android payment flow.
- Primary bank account: choosing which linked account inside that app should receive incoming money or be selected for a transaction.
These settings do not automatically control each other. Choosing an app does not choose your bank account, and marking an account as primary does not make that app the default everywhere. PhonePe’s Android help tells users to “Select PhonePe from the listed payment options,” while NPCI’s BHIM-UPI guidance updated 4 June 2026 describes paying by scanning with any UPI app. In practice, the payment flow determines which apps are offered.

A QR code, checkout page, or merchant app may open a list of installed and supported UPI apps. A different merchant may show a different list. Some flows open the app you selected previously, while others ask you to choose every time. That behavior belongs to the initiating payment flow, not to the primary-account setting inside Google Pay.

Set a primary bank account in Google Pay
Google Pay documents the following Android path for selecting the account that should be primary:
- Open Google Pay.
- Tap your profile photo in the top-right corner.
- Tap Bank account.
- Select the bank account you want to use as primary.
- Tap Set as primary account at the bottom of the account page.
Google Pay Help states: “When someone sends you money, it goes into your primary account.” After changing the setting, read the account details shown on the account page rather than relying on the account nickname alone. For a payment that debits money, also check the account displayed on the payment confirmation screen before you authorize it.
What this setting controls
The primary designation is a Google Pay account preference, not a bank-wide instruction. It tells Google Pay which linked account should receive money sent to you through Google Pay. A particular merchant payment can still display a different eligible account if you select one during checkout or if the app’s payment flow requires a different choice.
For example, if you have linked a salary account and a savings account, setting the savings account as primary tells Google Pay where incoming Google Pay payments should be routed. It does not close, rename, or alter either bank account, and it does not change the account selected in another UPI app. It also does not guarantee that every outgoing payment will use that account without checking the transaction screen.
Add a bank account first if it is not listed
If the account does not appear under Google Pay’s Bank account section, Google Pay’s support instructions are:
- Open Google Pay and tap your profile photo.
- Choose Bank account.
- Tap Add bank account.
- Choose your bank.
- Select an account associated with the phone number used by Google Pay.
The bank must support UPI. Google Pay describes verification with a linked debit card and, where available, Aadhaar-based onboarding. The mobile number on the active SIM must match the number registered with the bank so the account can be discovered. These are Google Pay-specific requirements; another UPI app can use a different enrollment path.
Account discovery normally depends on the bank identifying the mobile number used by the app. If you recently changed your number at the bank, moved the SIM to another phone, or are using a secondary SIM, the account list may not match what you expect. Resolve the number mismatch with the bank before repeatedly attempting enrollment.

- Confirm that the SIM containing your bank-registered mobile number is active in the phone.
- Make sure the app can send and receive the SMS required for bank verification.
- Check that the bank supports UPI and that you selected the correct bank in the app.
- Keep the linked debit card available if Google Pay asks for card verification.
- Use Aadhaar-based onboarding only when Google Pay offers it for your account and bank.
- Use the app’s official help channel or your bank’s support channel if the account remains unavailable.
Do not treat a failed search as proof that the bank account is closed or that your UPI ID has disappeared. It may simply indicate a mobile-number, SIM, SMS, bank-support, or verification issue. The bank’s records and the app’s enrollment screen are the right places to confirm the cause.
Update an account’s details without losing linked services
Google Pay says that if account details need updating, the account must be removed and added again. Before removing it, inspect the warnings in the app and identify any linked services. Google Pay specifically cautions that active Autopay or UPI Lite associations must be unlinked before account removal. Removing an account can therefore require additional setup after it is added back.

- Use Add bank account to enroll it again and complete the in-app verification.
- Return to the account list and use Set as primary account if it should again receive incoming Google Pay payments.
Take care with recurring instructions. An Autopay mandate can be associated with a subscription or bill, while UPI Lite has its own balance and linkage. Removing the bank account is not a substitute for cancelling a subscription, and adding the account back does not necessarily recreate every association automatically. Follow the prompts shown by Google Pay and verify each service separately.
How to choose a UPI app during a payment
There is no documented universal control in the reviewed official guidance that makes one UPI app the default for every UPI payment flow on every device. Instead, select the app presented by the payment screen:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Start the payment from the merchant, website, QR scanner, or other supported flow.
- Review the listed UPI payment options.
- Tap the app you want to use, such as PhonePe when it is listed.
- Review the payee, amount, and bank account shown after the app opens.
- Authorize only after the displayed details match your intention.
If the app you prefer is not listed, the payment flow may not support it in that context. That is different from the app being disabled on your phone. The merchant or initiating application controls the options it presents.
When scanning a QR code, check whether you are scanning from the UPI app you intended to use or from a camera or merchant application that launches another chooser. When paying on a website, the site may provide separate buttons for different apps. In either case, select from the options actually displayed instead of assuming that a system-wide preference will override the merchant’s design.
Keep the two choices separate
| Decision | Where it is made | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Choose a UPI app | The merchant, website, QR, or payment-selection screen | Which installed and supported app handles that payment |
| Set a primary bank account | Inside the UPI app’s bank-account settings | Which linked account Google Pay uses for incoming money sent through Google Pay |
| Select an account for a transaction | The payment confirmation screen, when the app offers account choices | Which eligible account is debited or credited for that specific payment |
This separation is useful when comparing choices. Ask three different questions: Which app does this payment flow support? Which account does that app identify as primary? Which account is shown for this particular transaction? Answering only the first question does not tell you where money will be credited or which account will be debited.
UPI ID is not the same as a bank account
A UPI ID is an identifier associated with a bank account. It gives someone an address to use when sending a payment; it is not a separate wallet or bank account holding the funds. Google Pay says a UPI ID created through Google Pay is the default UPI ID on that Google Pay account and that up to four UPI IDs can be created per bank account.
Recommended Free Tools
That limit does not change the primary-account setting. You can have multiple UPI IDs associated with one bank account, while the app separately identifies one linked bank account as primary. Think of the UPI ID as the payment address and the bank account as the underlying account from which money is debited or to which it is credited according to the payment flow.
If you share a UPI ID, you are sharing a payment identifier, not your UPI PIN. A sender generally uses the identifier to address a payment; you should never provide the PIN to receive money. If an app lists several UPI IDs, select the one you intend to use for the relevant payment and still verify the linked account and payee on the confirmation screen.
Verify the account before entering your UPI PIN
Before approving any payment, pause on the final confirmation screen. Check:

- the recipient or merchant name;
- the amount and any displayed fee;
- the UPI app handling the request;
- the last digits or other identifying details of the bank account selected;
- that you initiated the payment and are not responding to an unexpected collect request.
Only enter your UPI PIN after those details are correct. A UPI PIN authorizes a transaction; it is not needed for someone to send money to you. If an incoming-payment explanation asks you to enter a PIN to “receive” funds, stop and re-check the request.
Make the account check every time you switch between linked accounts, even if you just changed the primary setting. Account nicknames can be similar, and the transaction screen is the most relevant point of confirmation. If the payee, amount, or account is wrong, cancel the flow and restart it from the merchant or app rather than trying to correct it after authorization.
Troubleshoot common problems
The account is missing from Google Pay
Start with the Google Pay-specific checks: the phone number in Google Pay must match the number registered with the bank, the active SIM must be able to send SMS, and the bank must support UPI. If all three are satisfied, retry the in-app bank search and then contact the bank or Google Pay through its official support route.
If you have more than one SIM, confirm which number is active for SMS and which number the bank has on file. A data connection alone does not replace the SMS-based verification step described by Google Pay. Avoid repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the app before checking these prerequisites, because doing so does not fix a bank-side number mismatch.
The primary account changed, but a payment shows another account
The primary setting governs the account Google Pay uses for incoming money sent through Google Pay. A payment screen can still let you choose another eligible account for that transaction. Read the account shown immediately before authorization; that screen controls the payment you are about to approve.
For an incoming transfer, confirm that the sender used the UPI ID or payment address associated with the intended Google Pay account. For an outgoing payment, use the account selector on the confirmation screen when it is available. Do not infer the selected account from the app icon, a notification preview, or the fact that an account is primary.
The preferred UPI app does not appear
The initiating merchant or application may not offer that app in its payment list. Return to the payment options, choose one of the supported apps, or use a different supported payment route. Do not assume that reinstalling an app will create a universal default setting that the payment flow does not provide.
Also check whether you started from a QR scanner, a browser, or a merchant app that has its own payment chooser. The same installed UPI apps can appear in one flow and not another. That difference is a compatibility or presentation issue, not evidence that your bank account’s primary designation failed.
You cannot remove an account
Check whether Google Pay identifies an active Autopay or UPI Lite association. Those links may need to be unlinked before removal. Follow the prompts in the app and confirm that recurring or balance-related services have been dealt with before trying again.

Save any information you will need to restore a service, and check for pending transactions or instructions before proceeding. If the app still blocks removal after the listed associations are handled, use Google Pay’s official support route rather than a third-party “account recovery” service.
The app’s labels look different
Google Pay and PhonePe can change their screens as their apps are updated. Look for the equivalent Bank account, account-selection, or primary-account control rather than relying on an exact icon location. The documented Google Pay path is specifically for the Android help flow and may not look identical on every version.
Do not assume that a label such as “preferred,” “default,” or “primary” has the same scope in every app. Read the explanation on the screen. In particular, distinguish an app-level primary account from a UPI ID marked as default and from an account selected for one payment.
Security rules for setup and support
- Never disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password, full debit-card credentials, or Aadhaar details to another person.
- Enter verification information only inside the official app’s secure onboarding screen.
- Do not allow a caller or remote helper to direct you to approve a collect request or screen-share while you enter a PIN.
- Use the bank’s or app’s official support channel when account discovery or verification fails.
Official onboarding can ask you to enter verification information in the app. That does not make it safe to share the same information with a caller, chat contact, or person claiming to be technical support. A person helping you can explain where to tap, but should not see your PIN, OTP, card credentials, or Aadhaar details.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make Google Pay the default UPI app for every payment?
Official guidance does not establish one universal switch that forces Google Pay, PhonePe, or another app to handle every UPI payment on every device. Choose an app from the options shown by each merchant, website, QR, or payment flow.
Does setting a primary account change my UPI ID?
No. A UPI ID is an identifier associated with a bank account. Google Pay treats its default UPI ID and its primary linked bank account as separate settings.
Where does money sent through Google Pay go?
Google Pay says money someone sends you goes into the account marked primary in Google Pay. Confirm that the intended account is selected and that the sender is using the correct payment identifier.
Can I use more than one bank account?
You can link eligible accounts supported by the app and select an account when the payment flow offers that choice. Google Pay’s primary designation identifies one account for incoming money sent through Google Pay; it does not prevent you from choosing another eligible account for a transaction.

Why is my bank missing even though I have an account there?
For Google Pay, check that the bank supports UPI, the mobile number matches the bank’s records, and the active SIM can complete the required SMS verification. If those conditions are met and the account is still absent, contact the bank or Google Pay through official support.

Do I need a UPI PIN to receive money?
No. A UPI PIN authorizes a payment from your account. Treat any request to enter a PIN to receive an unexpected payment as a warning sign and stop before authorizing.
What if the account shown at checkout is not the primary one?
Read the transaction screen carefully. The payment flow may allow a different eligible account for that specific debit or credit. Select the intended account, or cancel if the correct choice is not available.
What you can and cannot set
You can set a primary linked bank account in Google Pay using its documented account settings. You can choose a UPI app when a merchant or payment flow lists supported apps. The official material does not establish one operating-system-wide “default UPI app” switch that overrides every payment flow, nor does it make a UPI ID equivalent to a bank account. Treat the app choice, primary account, and transaction-specific account as three distinct decisions.
