You do not need UPI to send money from an Indian bank account. Use your bank’s mobile app or internet banking to select IMPS for an immediate transfer or NEFT for a scheduled batch settlement. If you cannot use digital banking, an eligible bank branch can initiate the transfer; a person without a bank account can also make a cash NEFT remittance, subject to the branch’s requirements and a ₹50,000 per-transaction ceiling.
For any route, obtain the recipient’s exact account-holder name, account number, bank and branch, and IFSC. Check every character on the confirmation screen before authorising, then keep the transaction reference number.

Which non-UPI method should you use?
The practical choice depends on urgency, amount, and whether you can use your bank’s online channels. IMPS is designed for real-time transfers. NEFT is available around the clock but settles in half-hourly batches. A branch-assisted transfer is the fallback when you do not want to use, or cannot access, an app or website.

What information you need from the recipient
An ordinary bank transfer is not anonymous, and an IFSC by itself is not enough. Ask the recipient for the details exactly as recorded by their bank:
- Account-holder name.
- Complete account number, including every digit.
- Bank name and branch name or location.
- IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) for the recipient branch.
- Account type or any additional field your bank requests when creating a beneficiary.
Have the recipient send the information through a trusted channel. If the amount is significant, independently confirm the details using a phone number you already know rather than replying to an unexpected message. NPCI identifies account number plus IFSC as an IMPS route, while the RBI NEFT FAQ describes the beneficiary information used for NEFT: NPCI IMPS booklet and RBI NEFT FAQ.
How to send money online without UPI
The labels differ between banks, but the workflow is broadly the same in a mobile banking app and on an internet-banking website.

Open the bank’s official app or type its known website address yourself. Do not use a payment link sent by a stranger. Find a menu labelled Funds transfer, Transfer money, Payments or similar.
- Add or select the beneficiary. Choose Add beneficiary if the recipient is new. Enter the name, account number, bank, branch and IFSC. Some banks require a one-time password, transaction password, or a waiting period before a newly added beneficiary can receive funds. The bank’s current instructions control that period.
- Check the details before proceeding. Compare every digit with the information supplied by the recipient. If the bank displays the account name or a validation result, use it as an additional check, not as a reason to skip comparing the account number and IFSC.
- Choose IMPS or NEFT. Select IMPS when the payment is urgent and your bank offers it for the amount and channel. Select NEFT for a normal transfer when half-hourly batch settlement is acceptable. A bank may show both options under one transfer form.
- Enter the amount and any requested particulars. Review the amount, debit account, beneficiary, transfer type, applicable fee, and any remarks or purpose field. Do not assume a displayed limit is the same for another channel or a future date.
- Authorise only with the bank’s official security step. Use the app confirmation, one-time password, transaction password, or other method your bank specifies. Never disclose an OTP, PIN, password, card security code, or full login credentials to another person, including someone claiming to be bank support.
- Save the confirmation. Record the transaction or reference number, date, amount, and status. A screenshot can help, but keep the reference in a secure place as well.
- Check status before trying again. If the recipient does not see the credit, open the bank’s transaction-status page or contact the sending bank with the reference number. Do not submit a second transfer merely because the first confirmation was slow; doing so can create a duplicate payment.
NPCI’s general IMPS process also describes selecting IMPS, entering beneficiary details and amount, and authorising with the bank credential. It is process guidance rather than a promise of identical screens at every bank: NPCI booklet.
Using IMPS when the payment must arrive quickly
How IMPS works
NPCI describes IMPS as an innovative real-time payment service available round the clock. It is intended for account-to-account transfers through participating bank channels, including holidays. For the ordinary account-number-and-IFSC route, you provide the recipient’s account number and IFSC, then authenticate through your bank.

“Real time” describes the payment service’s operating design, not a guarantee that every individual transaction will appear instantly. A bank may be carrying out beneficiary checks, security screening, maintenance, or reconciliation. If the app shows a pending or otherwise unresolved status, check that status with the sending bank before initiating another payment.
IMPS limit and bank-specific restrictions
NPCI’s current IMPS product information publishes a ₹5 lakh maximum per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR. This is a system-level figure; an individual bank can set a lower daily, per-transaction, beneficiary, or channel limit. The app may also restrict newly added beneficiaries or require additional authentication. Check the limit displayed for your account immediately before submitting the transfer. NPCI’s product page is the authoritative reference for the published IMPS cap: NPCI IMPS.

- The recipient needs the money promptly and both banks support IMPS for the amount.
- You are transferring within the bank’s current IMPS limit.
- You have verified the account number and IFSC and can complete the bank’s authentication step.
For a large payment above your bank’s IMPS limit, split transfers only when the recipient and purpose justify doing so and you have confirmed that the first transfer succeeded. Otherwise, use NEFT or a branch route that fits the amount and your bank’s rules.
Using NEFT for a normal bank-to-bank transfer
Availability and settlement
The RBI says NEFT is available 24x7x365 and currently operates through half-hourly settlement batches. Its consumer comparison describes the transfer as generally completed within an hour, but the exact credit time can vary with the sending bank, receiving bank, beneficiary validation, and the batch in which the transaction is accepted. A transfer submitted outside a bank’s internal cut-off or held for review may not follow the shortest published estimate.
Because NEFT runs continuously, you do not need to wait for a weekday or ordinary branch hours when using an enabled digital channel. The receiving account still has to be valid, and both banks must process the instruction successfully.

Amount limits and fees
RBI does not impose an overall amount ceiling on NEFT. Your bank may nevertheless set a lower limit for your account, a newly added beneficiary, a mobile or web channel, or a particular security profile. The bank may also charge according to its current schedule. Read the amount limit and fee shown before authorisation instead of relying on a rule from another bank or an older account.

RBI’s NEFT FAQ, updated September 2, 2024, contains the operating and cash-remittance rules: RBI NEFT FAQ.
When NEFT is the sensible choice
- The payment is routine rather than time-critical.
- The amount exceeds the IMPS limit available to you but is within your bank’s NEFT limit.
- You want a transfer method that remains available outside branch hours through online banking.
Sending money through a bank branch
If you have a bank account
Take the recipient’s verified account details and your identification or account information to a branch that offers the required service. Tell the staff whether you want IMPS or NEFT, if both are available. The branch may ask you to complete a remittance form, provide the debit account, sign the instruction, and satisfy its identification and verification checks. Ask for a stamped acknowledgement or transaction reference and keep it until the recipient confirms credit.
Branch staff can explain the branch’s current limits, charges, documents, and processing times. Those details are bank-specific, so do not assume that a form, fee, or same-day promise from one branch applies elsewhere.
If you do not have a bank account
RBI’s NEFT FAQ allows a person without a bank account to make a cash remittance to an account-holding beneficiary at an NEFT-enabled branch. The FAQ sets a ₹50,000 maximum per cash NEFT transaction and requires additional sender information. The branch will tell you which identification, address, contact, and cash-deposit details it needs and whether it accepts this service at that location. Carry the recipient’s account number, name, bank and branch, and IFSC; an IFSC alone cannot identify the destination account.

Confirm the branch’s acceptance, documentation, charges, and timing before handing over cash. Count the money at the counter, obtain the receipt and reference number, and keep both until the beneficiary confirms the credit. The RBI comparison of remittance channels is available at RBI Financial Awareness Messages.
How to prevent a wrong-account transfer
Incorrect beneficiary information and limit violations are among the causes of IMPS business declines identified in NPCI’s performance material: NPCI IMPS bank-performance information. More importantly, an instruction that is accepted with wrong details may not be easy to reverse. Use this check immediately before authorisation:
- Read the account number from the confirmation screen, not only from the form-entry screen.
- Compare the first, middle, and final digits with the recipient’s original message.
- Check the IFSC character by character; letters and numbers can look similar.
- Confirm that the selected debit account is yours and that the amount has the intended number of zeroes.
- For a new or high-value beneficiary, make a small test payment only if the recipient agrees and a duplicate or partial payment will not cause a problem.
- Keep the transaction reference and never delete the bank’s confirmation until settlement is confirmed.
What to do when a transfer is pending, missing, or declined
Start with the sending bank’s status
Use the bank’s official transaction history or contact channel and provide the reference number, date, amount, transfer type, and beneficiary. A delayed notification is not proof that the debit failed. Ask whether the transaction is pending, successful, returned, or under review. Check the account statement for a debit before considering another instruction.
IMPS shows no immediate credit
NPCI describes a “deemed approved” situation in which online credit confirmation has not arrived and says the beneficiary bank manually processes the transaction under applicable RBI guidance if the account was not credited online. This is why checking status with your bank is safer than submitting the payment again. Use the sending bank’s complaint or dispute process if the status remains unresolved; give the recipient the reference number only through a trusted channel.
NEFT is not credited or returned
Under the RBI NEFT FAQ, if a NEFT transfer is not credited to the beneficiary account or returned to the sender within two hours after the relevant batch settlement, the bank is liable to pay penal interest at the current RBI LAF repo rate plus two percent, subject to the FAQ’s stated conditions. Contact the sending bank first, provide the transaction reference, and ask it to trace the batch and coordinate with the beneficiary bank. The rule does not mean that every delay qualifies automatically; the timing and other conditions in the FAQ apply.

The bank declines the instruction
Common causes include an incorrect account number or IFSC, an exceeded transaction or daily limit, an inactive beneficiary, insufficient available balance, or a security check that requires you to contact the bank. Correct the specific issue shown by the bank. Do not repeatedly edit and resubmit a transfer when the status is unclear, because one attempt may already be processing.
Fees, activation delays, and other bank-specific details
Neither IMPS nor NEFT has one universal customer experience. Your bank decides which channels it supports, how it labels them, whether a beneficiary must be activated, how long activation takes, the channel limits, and the applicable charges. A branch may have different rules from the same bank’s app. Review the bank’s current fee schedule and the final confirmation screen, where available.
Keep enough balance for both the transfer and any disclosed charge. If the bank offers a choice of debit account, make sure the selected account is permitted for IMPS or NEFT. A transfer can fail even when the recipient’s details are correct if the account lacks available funds or the chosen channel’s limit is lower than the requested amount.
A simple decision guide
- Need the recipient to receive money as quickly as possible? Check IMPS availability, your bank’s limit, and the beneficiary’s activation status. If all fit, use IMPS.
- Is the payment routine or above your available IMPS limit? Use NEFT through online banking, provided the amount fits your bank’s current NEFT limit.
- Cannot use the app or website? Visit a branch and request the appropriate transfer. Bring the recipient details and identification the branch requires.
- No bank account at all? Ask an NEFT-enabled branch whether it accepts cash NEFT. The RBI FAQ’s cash route is limited to ₹50,000 per transaction and requires additional sender details.
- Is any status unclear? Stop, check the transaction history and reference number with the sending bank, and only then decide whether another payment is necessary.
Security rules that apply to every route
- Use only the bank’s official app, website, branch, or published contact number.
- Never share an OTP, PIN, password, card security code, or full login details with a caller, chat contact, or recipient.
- Do not approve a “test” transfer or collect a payment by entering your PIN at another person’s direction.
- Verify unexpected changes to a supplier, landlord, family member, or service provider’s bank details through an independent, known contact.
- Save the receipt or reference number, but store it without exposing unnecessary account information publicly.
- If you suspect fraud, contact the bank immediately through its official emergency channel and follow its dispute and account-security instructions.
Using IMPS, NEFT, or a branch transfer does not remove the need to verify the beneficiary. The account number, IFSC, amount, and final confirmation are the controls that protect an ordinary bank-to-bank payment when UPI is not available.
