The exact Airtel Money code, fee and transfer limit depend on the country where your account is registered. Airtel Uganda’s published example uses *185*1# for a domestic transfer: enter the recipient’s number, review the transaction, and authorize with your Airtel Money PIN. That code should not be assumed to work in another Airtel market.
Before you enter your PIN, verify the recipient, amount and charge shown on your phone. After authorization, keep the status SMS. Airtel DRC’s terms say a successful transfer sends electronic value immediately and gives the sender an SMS containing a unique transaction reference and updated balance; the recipient also receives a notification. Treat those as country-specific terms and check your local Airtel tariff and support guidance.

- The recipient’s Airtel Money number, entered carefully with the correct country and local format.
- The amount you intend to send, plus enough account balance to cover the transfer and any applicable fee.
- Your Airtel Money PIN. Do not disclose it to the recipient, an agent or anyone claiming to be support.
- A phone signal strong enough to complete the session and receive a confirmation message.
Have the recipient’s registered name available when possible. Airtel DRC’s customer terms tell people funding another user through an agent to verify both the recipient number and registered name. That is a useful accuracy check even though an agent-deposit instruction is not necessarily the same as the in-phone workflow in every country.

How do I send money with Airtel Money?
Use the code or menu published for your own Airtel market. The following is Airtel Uganda’s documented domestic example, not a universal Airtel Money procedure.
Airtel Uganda domestic transfer
- Dial
*185*1#from the Airtel line connected to your registered Airtel Money account. - Choose or enter the option to send money, then enter the recipient’s Airtel Money number.
- Enter the amount. Check that the currency and number of digits match what you intend to send.
- Read the confirmation screen. Match the displayed recipient information, amount and charge against your notes and the recipient’s details.
- Authorize with your Airtel Money PIN only after the details are correct.
- Wait for the transaction-status message. Do not ask the recipient to rely on a verbal claim that the transfer was sent.
Airtel Uganda says the recipient receives an SMS showing the amount received and sender information. The sender should still retain their own confirmation message, because recipient notification and sender-side proof are separate pieces of evidence.
Airtel Uganda international-transfer example
Airtel Uganda describes international sending as a separate flow beginning with *185*1*4#. The session asks you to select the destination country, enter the amount, select a reason and confirm with your PIN. Availability, destination countries, exchange treatment, fees and limits must be checked locally before you rely on this route. Do not use the domestic code as a substitute for the international menu, and do not assume that this sequence is offered in every country.
Why the code cannot be treated as universal
Airtel Money operates under country-specific tariffs, regulatory requirements and menu configurations. The reviewed official material establishes a Uganda code and a separate Uganda international example, but it does not establish one send code for every Airtel market. If your SIM is registered outside Uganda, open your country’s official Airtel Money help page, app or customer-support channel and use the current instructions shown there.
How do I check Airtel Money charges before sending?
There is no verified universal Airtel Money fee-checking code or tool in the available official material. The reliable process is to use two checks together:

- Look up the current tariff published for the country in which your Airtel Money account is registered.
- Start the send transaction and inspect the charge displayed on the confirmation screen before entering your PIN.
Fees can vary by market, transaction type, amount band, recipient network, domestic or cross-border route, currency and regulatory changes. A tariff page may also be updated after you have learned a code, so treat the on-screen amount for your actual transaction as the final pre-authorization check. If the charge is higher than expected, cancel the session and verify the tariff rather than approving first.
Uganda fee figures published by Airtel Uganda
On a page dated 14 April 2026, Airtel Uganda states that Airtel users can send money for as low as Shs100, and that the highest applicable sending fee is Shs1,000 for sending as much as Shs7 million to another Airtel Money user. These are Uganda-specific figures from Airtel Uganda’s published example. They are not a universal Airtel Money tariff, and the page does not turn them into a promise that every amount, route or customer will receive the same charge.

How to read the confirmation screen
Before authorizing, identify each field that matters:
- Recipient: the number and, where displayed, the registered name.
- Amount: the exact value and currency.
- Charge: the fee for this transaction, not an old example or a remembered price.
- Total deduction: if shown, the amount that will leave your balance after the fee.
- Route: domestic, international or another service category.
Take a screenshot only if your phone and local rules permit it, but never include your PIN. A screenshot is a personal record; it does not replace the official confirmation SMS.
How can I confirm my Airtel Money transfer went through?
Use the sender’s status message first
A successful transaction should produce a status notification. Airtel DRC’s terms state that, when a transfer to another Airtel Money participant succeeds, Airtel transfers the electronic value immediately and informs both sender and recipient by SMS. The sender’s SMS includes a unique transaction number or reference and an updated account balance. Keep that message intact; the reference can be used to track and identify the transaction when you need help.

The exact wording, sender ID and message format may differ in another Airtel market. The evidence for the reference-and-balance detail comes from the DRC terms, so do not assume every country uses identical SMS text.

Check the recipient’s notification separately
Airtel Uganda says the recipient receives an SMS with the amount received and information about the sender. Ask the recipient to check the message on their own phone and confirm the amount. A recipient’s report without a sender-side reference is weaker evidence, especially when two phone numbers are similar.
What a failed transaction looks like
Airtel DRC’s terms say that if a transaction cannot be completed, Airtel notifies the customer by SMS and gives the reason. Save that failure message. It tells you not to treat the attempted transfer as successful and may identify whether you need to correct a number, balance, limit or service issue. Other markets may use different wording or channels, so follow the status shown for your account.
If no message arrives
- Do not send the money again immediately; a delayed message can arrive after the first attempt.
- Check whether your phone has signal and whether SMS delivery is working.
- Review your balance and any account notification for a completed deduction.
- Record the approximate time, amount, recipient number and any on-screen reference.
- Contact Airtel support through the official channel for your country, giving the transaction reference if one exists. Never provide your PIN.
Without a successful status message or an official account record, do not tell the recipient that the transfer is complete. A recipient should not release goods, cash or a service solely because a sender shows a pending screen.
Domestic and international routes: what to compare
When your market offers more than one send route, compare the route shown in the official menu rather than assuming that all transfers have the same terms.

Airtel DRC’s terms are useful for understanding the evidence a sender should keep, but they are not a replacement for your own country’s tariff or support policy. The terms state that:
- Transaction charges follow published tariffs and/or information communicated during the transaction.
- Fees are charged for transactions, so the amount shown during your session matters.
- A successful transfer to another Airtel Money participant moves electronic value immediately.
- Both sender and recipient receive SMS notification.
- The sender’s confirmation SMS includes a unique transaction number or reference and an updated balance.
- If the transaction cannot be completed, Airtel sends an SMS explaining the reason.
Use these points as a checklist for what to look for, not as a guarantee that another Airtel market uses the same message format or timing.
Preventing wrong-number and wrong-amount transfers
Before entering the PIN
- Read the recipient number digit by digit. Do not rely only on a contact name, which may be outdated.
- Compare the displayed registered name with the person or business you intend to pay, when the service displays one.
- Confirm the amount and currency aloud or in writing with the recipient for high-value payments.
- Check the fee and, if available, the total deduction from your balance.
- For international transfers, verify the destination country and the stated reason.
After entering the PIN
- Wait for the final status message instead of closing the session as soon as the PIN is accepted.
- Save the confirmation SMS and transaction reference.
- Ask the recipient to confirm receipt from their own Airtel notification.
- Keep the reference with your receipt, invoice or payment note until the transaction is reconciled.
Never share your PIN, one-time password or full authentication details with someone who says they need them to reverse a transfer. Airtel Uganda describes mobile banking as being approved through customer PINs, mobile-banking passwords or bank-issued one-time passwords; those credentials are for authentication, not for a recipient to collect.

The fee is higher than expected
Cancel before authorization, confirm that you selected the intended route, and consult the current local tariff. Do not substitute the Uganda Shs100 or Shs1,000 examples for your market’s price.

The recipient number looks wrong
Cancel and restart with the correct number. If you have already authorized the transfer, keep the reference and contact official Airtel support immediately. The available terms do not establish a universal reversal policy, so do not promise the recipient that a mistaken transfer can be recovered.
The recipient says nothing arrived
Compare the recipient’s number in your confirmation SMS with the intended number. Check whether your status says successful, failed or another state. Give support the transaction reference, amount and time; do not send a second payment until the first transaction’s status is established.
The transaction failed
Read the reason in the status message, correct only the indicated problem, and retry only after confirming that no successful deduction occurred. If the message is unclear, use the reference with official support.
You are using an Airtel SIM from another country
Use the tariff, code and support channel for the market in which the Airtel Money account is registered. A roaming phone number or a recipient living abroad does not by itself make a domestic procedure international.
A practical transfer checklist
- Identify the account country and whether the payment is domestic or cross-border.
- Open that country’s current Airtel Money instructions; use
*185*1#only for the documented Uganda domestic example. - Enter the recipient number and compare any displayed name.
- Enter the amount and inspect the fee, currency and total deduction.
- Stop if any detail is unexpected; otherwise authorize with your private PIN.
- Wait for the final status SMS.
- Keep the message and unique reference where provided.
- Ask the recipient to confirm their own SMS, and contact official support if status or delivery is uncertain.
What is established—and what you must verify locally
The documented Uganda flow establishes a domestic code, a separate international menu and Uganda-only fee examples. The DRC terms establish a model for SMS confirmation, references, balances and failure notices. Neither source establishes one Airtel-wide code, tariff, limit schedule or reversal process. Because codes and charges can change, check the official Airtel page or in-session tariff close to the time you send money, and treat the charge displayed before PIN authorization as the decision point.
