How to Send Money from India to the Maldives Using UPI (2026 Guide)

Short answer: Official information available as of 13 October 2026 does not establish a consumer, person-to-person UPI remittance route from India to an individual in the Maldives. NPCI describes UPI Global Acceptance as QR payments at selected overseas merchants, not transfers to a Maldivian person’s UPI ID or bank account. The Maldives is also absent from NPCI’s published list of countries whose international mobile numbers can be linked to UPI. RBI’s documented UPI-PayNow remittance route covers India and Singapore only.

If you need to send money to a person in the Maldives, use a regulated remittance service or authorised bank that explicitly supports the India-to-Maldives corridor. Confirm eligibility, payout method, total cost, exchange rate, limits, delivery time and cancellation terms before authorising a transfer. No particular provider’s current corridor terms are established here, so this guide does not recommend a named service.

Can you send money from India to the Maldives with UPI?

Not on the evidence published by NPCI and RBI for this corridor. A normal UPI transfer is designed around participating Indian accounts and supported payment flows. The international feature described by NPCI is UPI Global Acceptance: an Indian customer scans a participating merchant’s QR code abroad and pays from a linked Indian bank account. That is a purchase transaction, not proof that an Indian resident can enter a Maldivian individual’s UPI ID and send a personal remittance.

NPCI’s separate UPI-for-NRIs material allows some users with overseas mobile numbers to link those numbers to NRE or NRO accounts when their bank and app support the facility. Its live-members page lists 12 country codes—Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Maldives is not listed. The list concerns mobile-number linkage, not a universal statement about every UPI product, so check the live NPCI and bank pages before relying on it.

RBI’s UPI-PayNow FAQ documents a separate cross-border connection between participating institutions in India and Singapore. It states that the permitted person-to-person purposes are “Maintenance of Relatives Abroad” and “Gift” under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, with a stated daily limit of ₹60,000. That limit belongs to the India-Singapore linkage; it is not a Maldives remittance limit.

Can I pay a person in the Maldives using a UPI ID?

There is no established basis to assume that a Maldivian individual has a UPI ID that can receive an Indian transfer. A UPI ID, a bank-account number, a local-wallet identifier and a merchant QR are different payment credentials. Even if a recipient sends you a QR image or an address that resembles a UPI handle, do not approve a payment unless your bank and the receiving institution explicitly confirm that the transaction is supported and authorised.

Does UPI work in the Maldives?

It may work for a limited merchant-payment use case where the business, QR network, Indian bank and app all participate in an international acceptance arrangement. That statement should not be expanded into a claim that UPI is a general consumer transfer system in the Maldives. Coverage can differ by merchant and can change without notice.

What UPI can do in the Maldives

Pay a participating merchant by QR

UPI may work when a Maldivian merchant is part of an international acceptance arrangement and displays the relevant BHIM UPI or network-partner symbol. Acceptance is selective, not a guarantee that every shop, hotel, restaurant or taxi accepts UPI. The merchant must be enabled for the service, and your bank and app must permit international UPI transactions.

  1. Open the UPI app connected to the Indian bank account you intend to use.
  2. Turn on the app’s UPI Global, UPI International or equivalent international-payment setting for that account. The exact label and activation process depend on the bank and app.
  3. Ask the merchant whether the displayed QR accepts UPI. Do not assume that a generic QR or a QR intended for a local wallet will work.
  4. Scan the QR and enter or confirm the purchase amount.
  5. Before approving, check the amount in Maldivian rufiyaa and the corresponding Indian-rupee amount, the conversion rate and every displayed fee.
  6. Authorise only after verifying the merchant name and final amount. Keep the in-app receipt and the merchant receipt.

This flow pays a business for goods or services. It does not create a supported method for sending money to a friend, family member or other private recipient in the Maldives.

What “UPI works abroad” does not mean

  • It does not mean every Maldivian bank account has a UPI ID.
  • It does not mean a personal QR code in the Maldives can receive an Indian UPI transfer.
  • It does not mean an international mobile number can be linked to UPI merely because the number is outside India.
  • It does not convert a merchant-payment facility into a remittance licence or bypass foreign-exchange rules.

Merchant payment versus remittance

A merchant payment is tied to a purchase: the QR identifies an enabled business, the app displays a bill amount and the transaction is authorised as a sale. A remittance is sent for a person or household and normally requires a named beneficiary, a permitted purpose and a defined payout channel. The two flows can use similar words such as “international” or “QR,” but they have different compliance, refund and dispute arrangements. Choose the route by the recipient’s purpose, not by the presence of an international button in your app.

How to send an actual India-to-Maldives remittance

Because no current provider terms for this corridor were verified, the safe procedure is to select and validate the service yourself rather than treating a search result or an app’s international branding as proof of support.

1. Confirm that the corridor is explicitly supported

Look for a clear statement that a sender in India can send to a recipient in the Maldives. “International transfers” or “UPI accepted abroad” is too vague. The service should identify India as the sending country and the Maldives as the destination, state whether the route is available to residents, and show the permitted purpose. Check that the quote screen still offers the route after you enter the sender and recipient countries; a marketing page alone may not reflect current availability.

2. Check sender eligibility and compliance requirements

Read the service’s current onboarding requirements before entering payment details. A regulated provider may require identity verification, a PAN or other tax information, a bank account in the sender’s name, the purpose of transfer and source-of-funds information. Eligibility can differ for Indian residents, non-residents and business senders. Do not assume that a UPI account alone satisfies these checks. The name on the funding account should match the verified sender where the provider requires it.

3. Confirm how the recipient will receive the money

Ask the recipient which supported payout method is practical. Possibilities may include a Maldivian bank deposit or cash pickup, but availability varies by provider and location. Obtain the recipient’s name exactly as required, bank and branch details where applicable, account or other payout identifiers, phone number and any identification information required for collection. A mismatch can delay, reject or return a transfer. Confirm whether the recipient must collect in person, present identification or pay a local receiving charge.

4. Compare the complete price, not only the advertised fee

Before authorisation, record:

  • the Indian-rupee amount debited;
  • the exchange rate used and whether it includes a provider markup;
  • any transfer, card, bank or payout fee;
  • the exact amount the recipient should receive in Maldivian rufiyaa;
  • any separate fee the recipient’s bank or payout location may deduct.

The useful comparison is the final amount received for the same INR input. A service with a low visible fee can still be more expensive if its exchange-rate margin is wider. Take a screenshot or save the written quote, including its expiry time, because the displayed rate may change before payment.

5. Check limits and delivery estimates

Verify minimum and maximum amounts, daily or monthly caps, frequency restrictions, cut-off times, weekends and public-holiday effects. Treat an advertised “instant” or “same day” estimate as conditional until the provider states the conditions. A compliance review, incorrect recipient details or an unavailable payout location can extend delivery. Ask whether the provider applies separate limits to first-time customers or cash pickup.

6. Read cancellation, refund and support terms

Find out when a transfer can be cancelled, whether a refund returns to the original payment method, how exchange-rate changes are handled and who bears a receiving-bank deduction. Save the transaction reference, confirmation screen and support contact. Do not rely on a social-media account or an unverified intermediary for dispute resolution. Check whether support is available during Maldivian and Indian business hours and what documents are needed to open a complaint.

7. Send a small test amount when appropriate

For a first transfer, a modest amount can confirm that the recipient details and payout route work before you send a larger sum. This does not remove verification obligations or guarantee a future transfer, but it limits the exposure from a data-entry error. Make sure the provider’s minimum transfer amount and fees do not make a test uneconomic.

8. Confirm receipt independently

Ask the recipient to verify the credit through the receiving bank or authorised payout location, not only through a forwarded screenshot. Keep records until the recipient confirms the correct amount and the provider shows the transaction as completed. If the recipient reports a shortfall, compare the promised payout with the final credit advice before contacting support.

Which UPI-related route fits which need?

Route What the official material supports Use for a personal Maldives remittance? Important qualification
UPI Global Acceptance QR payment from an Indian bank account at selected international merchants No evidence of a person-to-person Maldives transfer Merchant, app, bank and network participation are required; check currency conversion and fees before approval
UPI for NRIs Some NRE/NRO account users can link an international mobile number when their bank and app support it No, not on the published country list for a Maldivian number NPCI’s live list names 12 countries and omits the Maldives; availability can change
UPI-PayNow Participating India-Singapore institutions; P2P purposes include “Maintenance of Relatives Abroad” and “Gift” No RBI’s stated ₹60,000 daily limit applies to this India-Singapore linkage, not the Maldives
Regulated remittance provider or authorised bank Potential route only if the institution currently supports India-to-Maldives transfers Possibly, after verifying the corridor and terms Check eligibility, payout, total cost, limits, timing, cancellation and regulatory status for the specific service

RBI and foreign-exchange context

Why an authorised channel matters

RBI foreign-exchange rules generally require receipts and payments between Indian residents and non-residents to pass through an Authorised Bank or Authorised Person unless a specific rule provides otherwise. The exact permitted method depends on the transaction category, sender status and purpose. The current consolidated regulations and the institution handling the transfer should be checked before you proceed; this article is not a transaction-specific legal opinion.

What the Asian Clearing Union reference means

RBI’s Foreign Exchange Management (Manner of Receipt and Payment) Regulations, 2016, shown on the cited RBI page as amended through 4 March 2020, list the Republic of Maldives among Asian Clearing Union members. The regulation describes ACU-account settlement for specified eligible trade receipts and payments and refers to freely convertible currency in other cases. That is settlement and foreign-exchange infrastructure for qualifying transactions. It is not a consumer instruction to send a personal UPI payment through the ACU.

Why the ACU mention does not change the consumer answer

An interbank settlement mechanism can determine how eligible institutions settle trade or other permitted transactions without providing a retail app or beneficiary-facing payment credential. The ACU reference therefore cannot be used to infer that a consumer may select “Maldives” in a UPI app, bypass an authorised provider or avoid identity and purpose checks.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Scanning a personal QR as though it were a merchant QR

A QR can identify a merchant, an account, a wallet or another payment system. Confirm the merchant’s UPI acceptance and the name shown in your app before authorising. A QR that scans successfully is not, by itself, evidence that the transfer is supported or reversible.

Assuming a Maldives phone number can be used for UPI

The published NPCI international-number list does not include the Maldives. Do not substitute a different country code or ask a recipient to use an account that is not theirs. This can create identity, compliance and recovery problems.

Applying the ₹60,000 figure to the wrong corridor

The ₹60,000-per-day figure is the limit stated in RBI’s UPI-PayNow FAQ for the India-Singapore connection. It is not a general UPI overseas limit and does not authorise India-to-Maldives transfers.

Comparing only transfer fees

Always compare INR debited with rufiyaa received after the exchange rate and all deductions. Capture the quote before approval because rates can change between an initial estimate and payment.

Using an unverified intermediary

Do not send money to a stranger who promises to convert a UPI payment into cash in the Maldives. Use an institution that identifies its legal entity, support process, terms and regulatory basis, and verify the details through its official channel.

Believing a failed payment proves the corridor is impossible

A declined merchant QR payment may reflect a temporary bank control, an unsupported network or an incorrectly activated setting. It does not prove that every UPI international feature is unavailable. Conversely, a successful merchant payment does not prove that personal remittances are supported. Keep those conclusions separate.

Troubleshooting by situation

Your app has an international toggle, but no Maldives option

Do not infer that the toggle supports every destination. The setting may be limited to particular merchants, countries or networks. Check the app’s supported-country terms and ask your bank whether a Maldives merchant route is enabled. If the intended transaction is a personal remittance, use a separately verified remittance channel instead.

The QR scans but the payment is declined

Possible causes include a non-participating merchant, an unsupported QR network, international usage not activated, bank risk controls, insufficient balance or a currency-conversion issue. Confirm the merchant’s acceptance, review the exact decline message in the bank app and contact the bank through its official support route. Do not repeatedly approve a transaction you cannot identify.

The recipient says the transfer has not arrived

Check whether the provider marks the transaction as pending, completed, rejected or refunded. Recheck the recipient details and ask the recipient to contact the receiving institution with the transaction reference. Avoid sending a second transfer until the first is traced.

The amount received differs from the quote

Compare the confirmation showing the exchange rate and fees with the recipient’s credit advice. A receiving-bank or payout deduction may apply, or the quote may have expired before payment. Use the provider’s documented complaint and refund process; retain all confirmations.

Practical decision checklist

  • Paying a Maldivian business now: ask whether its QR supports UPI Global Acceptance, activate the international feature if eligible, and inspect both currencies, the rate and fees before approval.
  • Sending money to a person: do not enter a personal Maldivian UPI ID based on assumption. Select only a service that explicitly lists India-to-Maldives remittances.
  • Using an NRE or NRO account: check your bank’s current NRI mobile-number eligibility; the Maldives is absent from NPCI’s currently published 12-country list.
  • Considering UPI-PayNow: remember that the documented route is India-Singapore, with its own participants, purposes and stated ₹60,000 daily limit.
  • Before any remittance: verify the institution, recipient payout method, identity requirements, total cost, limits, delivery estimate and cancellation terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send money from India to a Maldivian UPI ID?

No supported person-to-person route is established by the cited NPCI and RBI material. Do not treat a personal QR or UPI-like address as proof of receiving capability; use a provider that explicitly supports India-to-Maldives remittances.

Can I use UPI to pay a hotel or shop in the Maldives?

Possibly, if that merchant participates in UPI Global Acceptance and your bank and app allow the international payment. Confirm the BHIM UPI or network-partner mark, then review the rufiyaa amount, INR amount, exchange rate and fees before approval.

Is the Maldives included in UPI for NRIs?

NPCI’s published live-members list for international mobile-number linkage names 12 countries and does not include the Maldives. Bank and app rules can change, so check current official listings.

Does the ₹60,000 UPI-PayNow limit apply to Maldives transfers?

No. RBI states that figure for the India-Singapore UPI-PayNow linkage. It is not a general overseas UPI limit and does not create an India-to-Maldives route.

What information should I compare between remittance services?

Check corridor availability, sender eligibility, beneficiary payout method, INR debited, exchange rate and markup, all fees, rufiyaa received, limits, delivery estimate, cancellation and refund rules, and the provider’s legal and support details.

What should I do if a transfer is delayed?

Check the transaction status and reference, verify the recipient details, and have the recipient contact the receiving institution. Do not send a duplicate transfer until the first is traced; retain quotes, confirmations and credit advice.

The Bottom Line

UPI can support selected QR payments to participating merchants in the Maldives, but official NPCI and RBI material does not establish a personal India-to-Maldives UPI remittance. For a person-to-person transfer, use only a regulated service or authorised bank that explicitly supports this corridor, and compare the full cost, payout, limits, timing and cancellation terms before sending.
