The safest route is jurisdiction-first: register with the official self-exclusion service or gambling regulator where you live, then use each operator’s account controls as a second layer. No single register covers every country, gambling product, operator or physical venue. In Great Britain, GAMSTOP is the multi-operator route for online gambling companies licensed there; Michigan offers a state database plus operator-level controls; Australia’s BetStop covers online and telephone wagering, while land-based exclusions may require separate action.
What self-exclusion does—and what it does not do
The UK Gambling Commission defines self-exclusion as asking a gambling business to stop you gambling with it for a specified period. A properly applied exclusion should prevent new registration or access to covered accounts, but its reach depends on the register, the operator’s licence and the products included.

A multi-operator register lets you submit one request instead of repeating the same exclusion at every participating site or app. It is not a universal internet switch: an online register may not cover betting shops, casinos, bingo premises, offshore operators or gambling products outside its legal remit. Existing accounts, balances and marketing records may also require direct contact with each business.

Self-exclusion is a protective barrier, not a promise that urges disappear immediately. Use it alongside blocking software, bank payment controls where available and confidential support. If you are in immediate danger or feel unable to stay safe, contact local emergency services or a crisis service.

First identify your jurisdiction and the gambling you need to block
Start with the regulator or government service for your location. Confirm whether you need online casino games, online sports betting, online bingo, telephone wagering, land-based venues or several categories. The following examples show why the details cannot be generalized across countries.

Great Britain: use GAMSTOP for online sites and apps
GAMSTOP is the practical multi-operator route for people in Great Britain who want to block online gambling accounts operated by companies licensed in Great Britain. The service says more than half a million people have used it; that figure appears on its undated current About page and is not an annual statistic.
1. Open the official GAMSTOP registration process
Use the official GAMSTOP service rather than an advert, affiliate page or an operator’s description of the scheme. Check that your goal is online gambling. Betting shops, casinos, bingo premises and other physical venues are handled through separate arrangements listed by the UK Gambling Commission.

GAMSTOP uses the details you submit to match you with accounts at participating operators. Enter your legal name, date-of-birth information, address and contact details as requested, and make them consistent with the details held by your gambling accounts.
The UK Gambling Commission warns that matching depends on the information supplied. Update your registration after a move, name change or new email address. A change that is not reported can make matching less reliable, particularly when an operator has older details on file.

3. Select the period deliberately
GAMSTOP states that its available periods run from six months to five years and that an auto-renew option is available. Registration cannot be cancelled during the selected period. Choose a duration that protects you during the period when you expect the risk to be highest; do not select a short term on the assumption that it can be shortened or reversed later.
4. Understand what happens when the selected period ends
The exclusion does not automatically deactivate at the end of the selected term. GAMSTOP says you must contact it and complete its removal process, including a minimum 24-hour cooling-off period. Until that process is completed, the exclusion remains active.

GAMSTOP does not administer operator account closure or the return of funds. Contact each gambling business directly and ask it to close the account, confirm the balance and stop marketing communications.
UK Gambling Commission guidance says a gambling business must close the account and return any money in it, and must remove your details from its marketing databases. Keep records of your requests and the operator’s responses. An operator may need to verify your identity before releasing a balance, so use the business’s published support channel.
6. Add separate barriers
GAMSTOP describes bank blocks on gambling payments and blocking software as complementary measures. Ask your bank whether it offers a gambling-payment block and whether the block can be protected from easy reversal. Install reputable blocking software on every phone, tablet and computer you use, including devices shared with a household member where appropriate.

Michigan: state database plus operator controls
Michigan’s Gaming Control Board says its Responsible Gaming Database application can exclude a person from online casino gaming, online sports betting or both. The application offers a one-year or five-year selection. These are Michigan rules and should not be treated as a model for every US state.
Use the state application for broader coverage
Complete the Gaming Control Board’s Responsible Gaming Database application with the identity information it requests. Select the gambling categories and term shown in the current application, and retain confirmation of your submission. The state process, eligibility checks and processing details are specific to Michigan; follow the current instructions rather than relying on a description from another jurisdiction.
Use each site or app’s Responsible Gaming section too
The Michigan FAQ says a person can self-prohibit at each individual website or app through its Responsible Gaming section. This operator-level action is useful as a second barrier and may cover an account or product that is not included in the state database. Read the operator’s stated term, cooling-off and account-funds rules before confirming.
Australia: BetStop and the separate venue question
BetStop is Australia’s National Self-Exclusion Register for online and telephone wagering. If you are in Australia, confirm the current registration and removal instructions through the Australian government service and check whether your concern also includes casinos, clubs, betting shops or other land-based venues.
A 2025 Australian Government statutory review discussed improving links between BetStop and land-based registers. That recommendation illustrates a practical point: online and venue exclusions may require separate actions, even when they address the same gambling problem.

The review reported the following BetStop registrant selections as of 1 December 2025:
- 18% selected three months.
- 42% selected between three months and five years.
- 1% selected more than five years.
- 38% selected a lifetime exclusion.
These percentages describe BetStop registrants’ selections, not all Australian gamblers and not all self-exclusion systems. The categories are reported as published and may not total exactly 100% because of rounding.
If your country or state is not listed
Do not register with a service solely because its name appears in a search result. Find the gambling regulator or government authority for your own location and look for its official self-exclusion page. Confirm all of the following before submitting:
- Which operators are legally covered and whether offshore or unlicensed sites are excluded.
- Whether online casino, sports betting, bingo, lottery, poker, telephone wagering and land-based venues are treated separately.
- The minimum and maximum exclusion period.
- Whether the term can be shortened, cancelled or only allowed to expire through a cooling-off process.
- How existing accounts are closed and how balances are returned.
- How identity changes are reported and how to correct a failed match.
- Whether the regulator offers a complaint route if an operator accepts gambling during an active exclusion.
Where there is no national or state register, use every operator’s own responsible-gambling control, then add device and payment blocks. An operator-only exclusion is narrower than a regulator-run multi-operator register, but it is still worth activating while you look for broader protection.
Make the exclusion harder to bypass
Block gambling payments through your bank
Some banks let customers block card or account payments to gambling merchants. Ask exactly which payment types are covered, whether cash withdrawals or bank transfers are included, how long the block lasts and how quickly it can be removed. A payment block will not necessarily stop every route to an operator, so treat it as an additional barrier rather than a replacement for self-exclusion.

Install blocking software on every device
Use gambling-blocking software on phones, computers and tablets, and protect its settings with a password held by someone you trust if that is safe for you. Include browsers and app stores where the software allows it. Recheck coverage after buying a new device, resetting a phone or changing your internet connection.
Use TalkBanStop in Great Britain
The UK Gambling Commission describes TalkBanStop as a combined support approach bringing together GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline, free Gamban blocking software and GAMSTOP. The combination is designed to address the account, device and human-support parts of the problem rather than relying on one control.
Tell a trusted person what you have done
Ask someone you trust to help check that registrations, bank blocks and device protections are active. Give them the confirmation emails or reference numbers if you want help monitoring the barriers. Choose a person who will respect your privacy and will not control your money without your consent.
What to do with open accounts and balances
Self-exclusion and account administration are related but separate tasks. After registering, contact each operator where you have an account. Request closure, ask how any remaining balance will be returned, and ask for removal from marketing databases. Do not keep an account open merely to withdraw funds later if the operator can process the return as part of closure.
In Great Britain, the Commission’s public guidance states: “The gambling business must close your account and return any money in your account to you.” GAMSTOP nevertheless tells users to contact the operator because GAMSTOP itself does not perform those administrative steps.
If a site or app lets you gamble after exclusion
- Stop using the account and save evidence: screenshots, dates, transaction records, emails and the confirmation of your exclusion.
- Notify the gambling business promptly and ask it to investigate the breach, close the account and explain how remaining money will be returned.
- Report the failure to the relevant regulator. In Great Britain, the UK Gambling Commission says a person who gambled while self-excluded should notify the business and may also report the issue to the Commission.
- Keep expectations realistic about money already spent. The Commission says it cannot refund money lost through gambling.
- Strengthen the other barriers immediately: bank block, blocking software and support from a helpline or trusted person.
A failed match can result from changed personal details, a difference between the register and the operator’s records, or coverage outside the scheme’s legal scope. That is why accurate details and jurisdiction checks matter before treating an exclusion as active everywhere.
Support in Great Britain
The UK Gambling Commission lists the National Gambling Helpline as free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It gives 0808 8020 133 for England and Scotland and 0808 2819 265 for Wales. Confirm the current numbers and availability on the Commission or helpline’s official service page before calling, because contact details can change.

You do not need to wait until a self-exclusion application fails to ask for help. A helpline adviser can help you plan the sequence of account closure, payment blocks, device restrictions and conversations with family or a support person.
